Abstract:A self-healing dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) composed with sandwich structure using silicone rubber as an encapsulating thin shell layer and a piece of open-cell silicone foam filled with hydroxyl silicone oil as an interpenetrating core layer was designed and developed. The novel DEA showed an improved actuated out-of-plane displacement of 10.2 mm and an area strain of 52 % at an electric field of 22.7 kV mm(-1) without prestretching, which was over 6 times higher than that of raw silicone rubber. Moreover, the DEA provided a blocking force of 499.1 Pa when displaced out-of-plane by 3.0 mm and was used to grasp a balloon. In addition, such actuator presented excellent self-healing ability after an electrical breakdown, which is crucial for improving reliability and lifetime of the DEA device. Therefore, the above DEA provides new understanding of the concept of high-performance actuators for promising applications in artificial muscles and soft robots.
Improving Electromechanical Strain of Polyurethanes Via Optimizing Electric Field Ramp Rate and Actuator Size

Abstract:Oligomer-plasticized polyurethanes were fabricated and their mechanical properties, dielectric properties, and electro-mechanical actuations in a diaphragm configuration were investigated. The effect of the ramp rate of electric field and the diameter of actuators on the actuation was tested in detail. We found that choosing appropriate parameters can suppress the leakage current and reduce the visco-elastic resistance, resulting in improved actuated strain. Under near optimal conditions, the polyurethane with 1 phr (per hundred resin) plasticizer displayed a deflection strain as high as 1800% (around 12% of diameter) at 42 V/mu m, providing an effective actuated work of 1.8 J/cm(3). The optimized conditions are material specific, however the present analysis can be extended to other dielectric elastomers to aid in the design and fabrication of better actuators. Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this article, four different plasticizers are blended in thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) to improve its electromechanical actuation performance. The selected plasticizers include dibutyl phthalate, triphenyl phosphate, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and an unsaturated polyester PMG. The plasticization effect of various plasticizers on the mechanical properties, dielectric properties, and the electromechanical actuation of PU films is carefully characterized and compared. Results demonstrate that the actuated strain under low electric fields and the electromechanical coupling efficiency of PU can be substantially improved by blending with appropriate type and amount of plasticizers. The oligomer‐type plasticizers, PEG and PMG, act more efficiently in the improvement of actuation. An actuated strain in thickness of 1.54%, 140 times higher than that of pure PU, along with an electromechanical coupling efficiency of 0.60 under a low electric field of 5 V/μm was achieved for the PU plasticized with PMG suggesting an attractive approach toward advanced dielectric elastomer actuators. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Highly Improved Electro-Actuation of Dielectric Elastomers by Molecular Grafting of Azobenzenes to Silicon Rubber

Abstract:Herein we report a novel and efficient approach to fabricate dielectric elastomers with enhanced dielectric constant and high dielectric strength. Azobenzenes with strong permanent dipole moments were synthesized to co-crosslink with hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane through a simple one-step process, which realized a type of robust, molecularly homogenous silicone rubber (SR). The chemical structure, dielectric and mechanical properties of the resultant azo-g-PDMS elastomers with azobenzne contents ranging from 0 to 13.2 wt% were carefully characterized. The dielectric constant of azo-g-PDMS films at 1 kHz increased from 2.72 to 4.88 with the increase of azobenzene contents. By grafting with 4.0 wt% of azobenzene, the breakdown strength of azo-g-PDMS reached 89.4 V μm−1, which is 36% higher than that of pristine SR. The electric field induced deformation of silicone rubber could be enhanced by grafting with azobenzenes. The azo-g-PDMS film with 7.1 wt% of azobenzenes displayed a maximum area strain of 17%. Meanwhile, the azo-g-PDMS films exhibited a short response time (about 0.5 s) to the change in the electric field. Some prototype electromechanical actuators based on this type of azo-g-PDMS films were fabricated, demonstrating that the azo-g-PDMS dielectric elastomer is a very promising candidate for artificial muscle applications.

Abstract:This work reports the low-loss polyacrylate dielectric elastomer with outstanding actuation performance by employing a molecular engineering route. It is found that the difunctional macromolecular crosslinking agent we choose can not only effectively tune the dimensions of elastomer meshes and avoid uneven distribution of crosslinking points in elastomer matrix, accordingly eliminating the stress concentration and delaying the failure of elastomer, but also as “soft segments” and alleviate the strong dipole-dipole interaction between adjacent side groups of polyacrylate, which makes the dielectric elastomer with low elastic modulus and low mechanical loss. Simultaneously, a certain amount of uncrosslinked chains will remain in the free volume space of elastomer network, which would increase the dielectric constant of as-synthesized elastomers owing to their strong orientation ability. Therefore, the improvements in mechanical and dielectric properties of elastomer will contribute to the amelioration of actuation performance. We also design a home-made non-magnetic motor apparatus to verify the optimized actuation performance. This finding represents the first molecular engineering approach to improve the intrinsic actuation performance of dielectric elastomers, which are key materials of choice for flexible dielectric elastomer actuators.

Abstract:A simple, cheap, all-organic process for the fabrication of polyurethane (PU) composites for dielectric elastomer actuators was presented in this paper. This study focused on improving the electromechanical properties of PU matrix with polyol small organic molecule as filler. The dielectric, tensile mechanical, dynamic thermal mechanical, creep, and electric field induced strain properties of a series of polyol-PU blends were described in detail. It was found that the dielectric constant of PU at low frequencies (40–100 Hz) remarkably increased with the addition of polyols and the tensile strength of the PU/polyol blends decreased obviously with an increase in the content of polyol. The polyol-PU all organic composites had better electromechanical response than the pristine PU. Among the PU/glycerol, PU/ethylene glycol, and PU/triethylene glycol blends, PU/glycerol-50% had relatively high dielectric constant of 32.71 (40 Hz), low tensile strength of 16.37 MPa, low loss modulus of 164.24 MPa (−40 °C), high compliance of 9.709 × 10−5 1/Pa, and high electric field induced strain of 49.7 (37.4 MV/m). The enhancement of the electric field induced strain was mainly triggered by an increase of the dielectric constant and a decrease of the elastic modulus.

Abstract:Blending is an effective way to improve properties of rubbers and develop new materials, so more than 75 % of the rubber consumption in the world is rubber blend. However, blending of thermoplastic elastomers has not yet been emphasized, and few successful examples have been reported. The main challenge for blend systems is compatibility of two components. Herein, a series of (polydimethylsiloxane-based PU)-g-(poly (propylene glycol)-based PU) ((PDMS-PU)-g-(PPG-PU)) graft copolymers with different graft chain lengths and hard segment contents (HSC) were synthesized and utilized as compatibilizers of PDMS-PU/PPG-PU blends. The influence of the structure of compatibilizers on the morphology of blends was investigated, and the compatibilization mechanism was proposed. With the solubilization, the phase structure of blends transforms from "droplet-in-matrix" morphologies to co-continuous ones, and the average size of PPG-PU dispersed phase decreases from 3.5 ± 0.45 μm to 230 ± 60 nm. This is the first time that thermoplastic PDMS-PU/PPG-PU blends with co-continuous structures have been successfully prepared. The properties of blends exhibit synergistic effects. For example, they show high tensile strength of PPG-PU in mechanical properties and unique properties of PDMS in dynamic mechanical properties, weather resistance, water resistance and biocompatibility. In addition, strain sensors were fabricated by introducing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the blends, which demonstrated remarkable sensing capability for diverse human body motions.

Abstract:The application of silicone rubber (SiR) dielectric elastomer (DE) as an actuator is limited by its low properties in terms of dielectric constant, mechanical strength and actuated strain in a low electric field. This work aimed at simultaneously improving the dielectric and mechanical properties of SiR by designing a dual-crosslinking network (DN) of SiR, denoted as SiR-DN. First, carboxyl modified PMVS (PMVS-COOH) was synthesized by using a photochemical thiol-ene click reaction. Then PMVS-COOH was blended with a commercial silanol terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-OH) followed by the crosslinking of PDMS-OH using an amino (NH2) bearing crosslinking agent to form a PDMS-NH2 crosslinked network, forming a PMVS-COOH and PDMS-NH2 dual-crosslinking network. The as prepared DN structure includes the chemical crosslinked PDMS-NH2 network and the network formed by hydrogen bonds between PMVS-COOH and PDMS-NH2. The PMVS-COOH can serve as a polar component to enhance the dielectric constant and the hydrogen bonds can serve as sacrificial bonds to strengthen SiR. Compared with reference SiR, the tensile strength, tensile toughness, dielectric constant and actuated strain at low electrical field (15 kV mm(-1)) of SiR-DN 1.5/1 (with the PMVS-COOH/PDMS-OH mass ratio of 1.5/1) were all largely improved. The reinforcing effect of SiR-DN is comparable with the most commonly used reinforcing methods of room temperature vulcanizing SiR by adding nanofillers. Meanwhile, the actuated strain at 15 kV mm(-1) of SiR-DN 1.5/1 is much higher than that reported in most previous studies.

Abstract:In materials science, achieving polymers that possess both high strength and high toughness-traditionally seen as contradictory properties-remains a significant challenge. In this study, a poly (urethane-imide-urea) (PUIU) was synthesized, featuring soft, hard, and rigid segment groups alternately distributed along the main chain. By integrating a polyurethane (PU) prepolymer, urea, and imide, with the PU prepolymer acting as the soft segment to confer malleability, urea-formed hydrogen bonds serving as the hard segment to provide toughness, and imide acting as the rigid segment to enhance material strength. The synergistic effects of these elements result in an elastomer with outstanding strength (70.1 +/- 2.6 MPa), high elongation at break (1813.9 +/- 76.0 %), and high toughness (420.4 +/- 22.3 MJ/m3). Furthermore, it demonstrates superior fatigue, tear, and wear resistance. Through a blend of simulation and experimentation, we uncover the reasons behind its high performance. This study demonstrates the feasibility of preparing an elastomer that combines softness, hardness, and rigidity, meanwhile, achieving a balance between strength and toughness, thereby offering valuable theoretical guidance for the integration of high strength and high toughness.
A New Kind of Electro-Active Polymer Composite Composed of Silicone Elastomer and Polyethylene Glycol

Abstract:In this work, a new kind of electro-active polymer composite composed of silicone and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was prepared by solution blending. Two types of PEG with average molecular weights of 600(PEG600) and 1500(PEG1500) were first blended with liquid silicone (DC3481) separately. Then, the dielectric, electrical, mechanical and electromechanical properties of pure silicone and the silicone/PEG composites were investigated. The silicone/PEG600 composite shows an increased dielectric constant and a decreased Young's modulus, resulting in an improved figure of merit (FOM) and an actuation strain of 11.5% at 40 V mu m(-1), which is 64% higher than pure silicone. This indicates that the actuation properties of silicone are largely improved by the addition of PEG600. However, for the silicone/PEG1500 composite, a much higher dielectric constant and an increased modulus due to its semi-crystalline structure are obtained, which lead to a decreased FOM and a smaller actuation strain than that of pure silicone. In addition, a comparison between theoretical strain and the corresponding experiment value was made. And the results indicate that not only the FOM, but the dielectric loss and mechanical loss play an important role in the actuation properties.
An Ultrastrong and Highly Stretchable Polyurethane Elastomer Enabled by a Zipper-Like Ring-Sliding Effect.

Abstract:Elastomers with excellent mechanical properties are in substantial demand for various applications, but there is always a tradeoff between their mechanical strength and stretchability. For example, partially replacing strong covalent crosslinking by weak sacrificial bonds can enhance the stretchability but also usually decreases the mechanical strength. To surmount this inherent tradeoff, a supramolecular strategy of introducing a zipper-like sliding-ring mechanism in a hydrogen-bond-crosslinked polyurethane network is proposed. A very small amount (0.5 mol%) of an external additive (pseudo[2]rotaxane crosslinker) can dramatically increase both the mechanical strength and elongation of this polyurethane network by nearly one order of magnitude. Based on the investigation of the relationship between molecular structure and mechanical properties, this enhancement is attributable to a unique molecular-level zipper-like ring-sliding motion, which efficiently dissipates mechanical work in the solvent-free network. This research not only provides a distinct and general strategy for the construction of high-performance elastomers but also paves the way for the practical application of artificial molecular machines toward solvent-free polyurethane networks.
Electro-mechanical Performance of Polyurethane Dielectric Elastomer Flexible Micro-Actuator Composite Modified with Titanium Dioxide-Graphene Hybrid Fillers

Abstract:Interface interactions between nanoparticles and polymer matrix have crucial effects on microstructures and properties. We demonstrate that polyurethane dielectric elastomer filled with titanium dioxide functionalized graphene, fabricated as a flexible micro-actuator, displays evident electric stimulus response and electric field induced strain. The hydrophilicity and wettability of graphene can be greatly enhanced by decorating nano-TiO2 onto graphene, which causes the improved interface interactions between fillers and polymers. Higher dielectric constant, less loss modulus, elevated breakdown strength, and better electric stimulation responses of the novel titanium dioxide functionalized graphene–polyurethane dielectric elastomer composite are achieved due to enhanced filler–matrix interface. The maximum electric induced thickness strain of this titanium dioxide functionalized graphene–polyurethane dielectric elastomer composite is 72.4% at 38.7V/μm, which is 1.8 times of the electric induced strain of graphene–polyurethane composite.
Improved Electromechanical Properties of Silicone Dielectric Elastomer Composites by Tuning Molecular Flexibility

Abstract:Silicone rubber (SR) composites exhibited significantly improved electromechanical properties via tuning the molecular flexibility by adding plasticizer. To decrease the enhanced elastic modulus of SR composites filled with high-dielectric-constant BaTiO3 (BT) particles, silicone oil (SO) plasticizer was incorporated into the BT/SR composite to weaken the intermolecular interactions and break the structure of the filler network as result of swelling effect. The obviously decreased elastic modulus resulted in a high electromechanical sensitivity beta and a relatively large actuated strain of 10.6% for 20 phr BT/SR composite filled with 50 phr SO at a low electric field of 25 kV/mm, approximately 380% increase compared to that of pure SR at the same electric field. The result indicates that tuning flexibility of composites is a good strategy to obtain high-performance dielectric elastomers. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Flexible polymer materials with obvious electrostriction characteristics display a significant potential for application as novel potential actuators in the future. We report advanced TiO2-polydimethylsilicone (TiO2-PDMS) nanocomposites with electroaction that is effectively increased through a molecular flexibility tuning process. The increase in the electromechanical sensitivity (by 550%) and actuation strain (by 230%) under a low electric field in low elastic modulus TiO2-PDMS composites originates from the flexibility tuning process by the introduction of dimethylsilicone oil (DMSO). The DMSO is miscible with PDMS resulting in a uniform composition at the molecular level, which can significantly decrease the elastic modulus of the dielectric elastomer composites from 820 kPa to 95 kPa. The experimental results are interpreted using the swelling elastomers theory. It suggests that reducing the elastic modulus could be a good strategy to improve the actuation performance with a low electric field.
Effect of multi-armed chain extender on microphase morphology, stress-strain behavior and electromechanical properties of polyurethane elastomers

Abstract:High dielectric constant and low modulus of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (PUEs) are required for various applications in actuators, sensors and energy harvestings. In this work, we controlled the microphase separated morphology of PUEs by regulation of the content of hydroxyl-terminated four-armed polycaprolactone (4amPCL) chain extender to achieve J-shaped stress-strain curve with low modulus and high electromechanical properties. Our results showed that the hydrogen bonding between hard segments (HSs) and crystallization of soft segment (SS) are significantly impeded by long-chain branched structure when added lower molar fraction (<20% of chain extenders) of 4amPCL as chain extender, whereas the branched long-chains are embedded in microphase separated hard and soft domains (HD and SD) to form strip shaped interconnected hard domain (HD) rich regions when added higher molar fraction (>20% of chain extenders) of 4amPCL as chain extender. The PUE with 29% of 4amPCL (PU-4amPCL-0.29) showed lower modulus (1.5 MPa), higher tensile strength (17.5 MPa) at 1048% of elongation, and 3.9% of actuation strain at 20 kV/mm, and higher contribution (48.1%) of Maxwell stress on actuation strain at 20 kV/mm. We found that the microphase separation of branched long-chains induced semi-interpenetration polymer network like structure of PUEs played an important role in exhibiting J-shaped stress-strain behavior. Our results can provide new insight on fabrication of high electromechanical performance of dielectric polyurethane elastomers.

Abstract:The application of silicone rubber (SiR) as a dielectric elastomer acuator is limited by its poor actuated strain because of low dielectric constant (er). Herein, we designed and synthesized SiR-based dielectric elastomer composites with high er and acuated strain by introducing an extraordinary designed filler, methoxy function-alized halloysite nanotubes (HNTs-IPTS). This novel filler exhibits synergistic effects: (i) Highly polar urethane groups modified on the surface of HNTs-IPTS endow the composites with excellent dielectric properties (er = 13.59@0.1 kHz). (ii) The covalent bonds formed between HNTs-IPTS and SiR provide the composites with enanced tensile strength, better filler dispersion, and lower dielectric loss. (iii) The tubular architecture of HNTs-IPTS promotes the efficient delivery of charge carriers, further improve the er and actuated strain of the com-posites. These merits allow the resulting actuator to be more sensitive to driving field. Finally, HNTs-IPTS/SiR composites at 9 phr filler content exhibited a quite large actuated strain of 22.7% at 36.37 kV/mm without any prestrain. This work establishs the efficient HNTs-IPTS via structure design strategy, and the HNTs-IPTS/SiR composites are of great potential for next-generation DE acuators.

Abstract:Herein a diaphragm type dielectric elastomer actuator by blending azobenzene dyes into a polyurethane matrix (Azo/PU) is described. The effects of azobenzene content on the dielectric, mechanical, and electromechanical properties of the Azo/PU blends are discussed. The resultant blends with azobenzene content ranging from 1 to 8 wt% were characterized. The dielectric permittivity of PU increased from 8.0 to 11.1 (increasing of 38.5%) at 1 wt% azo content and reached a maximum of 35.6 (increasing of 343%) at 4 wt% azo content. By blending with a small content of azo the dielectric breakdown strength reached 57 kV mm(-1), which is 86% higher than that of the neat PU. The 30 mm thick diaphragm of Azo/PU blend with 1 wt% azo content exhibited the highest actuated displacement at the center around 700 mm. Meanwhile the neat PU gave a displacement of 25 mm. That is a 26-fold increase in actuation is obtained by blending only 1 wt% azo dyes into the PU matrix. Infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize the structure of the Azo/PU blends. The particular chemical structure the Azo/PU blend containing 1 wt% of azo dyes is proposed to be responsible for the improvement in electromechanical actuation.
Peano‐Hydraulically Amplified Self‐Healing Electrostatic Actuators Based on a Novel Bilayer Polymer Shell for Enhanced Strain, Load, and Rotary Motion

Abstract:The hydraulically amplified self‐healing electrostatic actuator is an emerging driving component for soft robotics, which is composed of a flexible dielectric polymer shell that is partially covered by conductive electrodes and filled with a liquid dielectric. However, the low permittivity and dielectric strength of the polymer shell remain a challenge that limits the actuator performance. Herein, a Peano‐hydraulically amplified self‐healing electrostatic actuator is constructed by innovatively integrating a bilayer polymer shell for combined favorable properties of high dielectric strength, dielectric permittivity, and elastic modulus. Compared with a traditional single‐layer shell actuator, the new bilayer actuator architecture generates an increased strain (164%) at 5 kV and improves load‐bearing capability (620 mN) at 6 kV, thereby providing a significantly enhanced actuation performance. The new actuator is further applied in driving a ratchet system, which converts the reciprocating motion of the actuator into a rotating motion and a flexible output torque, in order to protect the rotating components from impact. The high strain and load characteristics of the bilayer configuration and the easy‐to‐deform characteristics of the new actuator design make it an attractive approach to fabricate complex geometries and achieve a variety of motion modes in soft systems.
Significantly Enhanced Electromechanical Performance Of Pdms Crosslinked Pvdf Hybrids

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based ferroelectric polymers have large and tunable dielectric permittivity (epsilon(r)), but rather high Young's modulus (Y), which limits its electromechanical response when used as actuators. In this work, a silicone oligomer involving amino groups is employed to crosslink a non-crystallized poly(vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene) matrix bearing double bonds (P(VDF-CTFE-DB)) via addition reaction. Thanks to the flexible silicone molecules, the modulus of the hybrids is reduced over 30% when compared with the pristine matrix. Most interestingly, the epsilon(r) of the hybrids is improved to nearly 100% higher than that of the matrix when the silicone content reaches 30 wt %. This may be due to the dilution effect of silicone molecules, which favors macromolecular chain rearrangement and dipole orientation of the hybrids under an applied electric field. As a result, electric-field activated displacements of the above hybrid increases to 0.73 mm from 0.48 mm of the matrix under 60 MV/m. The maximum electric field-induced thickness strain increases from 1% of the matrix to nearly 3% of the crosslinked hybrid. This work may provide a facile strategy to fabricate PVDF-based hybrids with enhanced electromechanical performance under low activating voltage.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomer is a kind of attractive artificial muscle with fast and reversible deformation excited by applied voltages. Typical dielectric elastomers suffer from low dielectric breakdown strength, which limits the achievable electro-actuation performance. We report that the introduction of surface-modified ZrO2 nanoparticles in dielectric elastomer (poly(styrene-b-butyl acrylate-b-styrene)) can significantly increase the dielectric breakdown strength. We highlight that the surface modifier molecules for ZrO2 nanoparticles should be designed to have an oligomeric chain compatible with the elastomer matrix to relieve the entropy loss of the elastomer chains. Thus, good dispersion of the nanoparticles can be achieved and the modulus is mildly increased. As a result, the maximum electro-actuation area strain is increased by a factor of 2.0 (from 19.1% to 37.8%), and the maximum energy density by a factor of 9.2 (from 5.96 kJ/m3 to 55.15 kJ/m3) by adding 1.7 vol% ZrO2 of 8 nm.
