Abstract:Herein, Cu(NO3)(2)/acetonitrile was proven to be an efficient oxidation system in the oxidation of 5-HMF to DFF in an aqueous solution. After optimization of the reaction conditions, the DFF yield of 97.0% was obtained under the conditions of 1.5 mmol 5-HMF, 1.5 mmol Cu(NO3)(2), 0.48 ml acetonitrile, 10 ml H2O, 80 degrees C, and 18 h. The oxidation system could be recycled at least three times by adding HNO3, which avoided the risk of production of Cu-containing waste. The formation of Cu(CH3CN)(4)(+) in the aqueous solution played an important role in enabling the oxidation of 5-HMF via the redox cycle of Cu2+/Cu+. To further improve the reaction efficiency, a reactive-extraction process was developed by introducing toluene as the organic phase due to its excellent extraction capacity for DFF. As a result, the reaction time was shortened to 8 h, and the highest DFF yield of 98.9% was achieved.

Abstract:Bi2WO6/mpg–C3N4 composite catalyst was prepared by hydrothermal method and applied in the partial oxidation of HMF to DFF by photocatalytic approach. The 12% Bi2WO6/mpg–C3N4 composite exhibits the highest catalytic performance, with the HMF conversion of 59.3% and the DFF selectivity of 84.3% after 6 h. This may be primarily ascribed to the synergetic effect of Bi2WO6 and mpg–C3N4 on photogenerated charges separation through the charge transfer between the two semiconductors. Based on the reactive species trapping experiment, it is concluded that ·O2− plays a significant part to convert HMF into DFF and the electron–hole separation follows a Z‐scheme mechanism.

Abstract:Selective photocatalytic oxidation rather than mineralisation is essential for the catalytic valorisation of biomass, which requires precise control of the generation of reactive oxygen species via the rational construction of heterogeneous junctions. In this paper, CdIn2S4/g-C3N4 (CIS/CNNS)heterojunction was constructed by microwave-assisted method and used for selective photocatalytic oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-Diformylfuran (DFF), a key intermediate for fine chemical synthesis and an important furan-based polymer monomer. According to the electron transfer mechanism of the heterojunction, the effective separation of charges and holes led to a significant enhancement of the utilization efficiency of photogenerated electrons (PGES). Specifically, the valence band (VB) potential of the constructed heterojunction did not reach the oxidation potential of ·OH/OH-, which avoided the massive generation of the strongly oxidizing active species ·OH and thus increased the reaction selectivity. Under visible light irradiation, 65.2% HMF conversion and 91.5% DFF selectivity could be achieved over CIS/CNNS, with a product yield 3.26 times higher than monomeric CdlIn2S4 and 4.2 times higher than monomeric CNNS. The radical quenching experiments verified that ·O2- was the predominant active species in the reaction process, and the ·O2- signal of the composite was significantly enhanced in the ESR characterization, achieving a highly selective conversion of HMF to DFF.

Abstract:Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) reaction is considered as a potential route for upgrading bio-based carbonyl compounds to their corresponding alcohols. Herein, ordered mesoporous N-doped carbon confined Co-N-x (Co-NC) was adopted as a catalyst for converting cellulose-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandimethanol (FDM) using formic acid (FA) as a hydrogen donor. Different catalysts and preparation methods were screened, by varying cobalt phases and template removal procedures. It is found that highly dispersed N-confined Co species (Co-N-x) other than naked Co NPs acted as catalytic species for the CTH of HMF with FA, which gave 86% yield of FDM at 100% HMF conversion. Kinetic experiments revealed that, compared with molecular hydrogen, Co-NC could effectively accelerate HMF hydrogenation and suppress as-formed FDM hydrogenolysis in the presence of FA, which is ascribed to its superior activity toward hydrogen transfer from FA and fast desorption toward FDM. Mechanism studies indicated that C-H dissociation of FA could be the rate-determining step in the CTH reaction, and the hydrogenation of HMF could proceed through an intermolecular hydride transfer route. This work shows that the bifunctional nature of the catalyst is critical in the efficient CTH of biomass-derived carbonyl compounds and provides insights toward the rational design of such catalysts.

Abstract:The photocatalytic selective oxidation of biomass derivate compound 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran is an environmentally friendly and energy-saving process. Nb2O5 was prepared and applied in the oxidation of HMF under visible light, although its bandgap energy is higher than 3.2 eV. The reaction process follows a special mechanism over a Nb2O5 catalyst different from the normal oxide semiconductor. The effect of calcination temperature, incident wavelength, and reaction time on photocatalytic performance was investigated. Nb2O5-800 exhibits the best performance in the presence of O-2 with benzotrifluoride as a solvent under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:Herein we reported a catalytic strategy for the photocatalytic dehydrogenation of biomass-based 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) upon visible-light illumination. The developed method could afford complete conversion and high selectivity of DFF without any oxidizing agent or additive or any conventional hydrogen acceptor. Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) modified with non-noble metals was used as the photocatalyst. The visible-light-driven CN possessed a suitable energy band structure, which could provide feasible redox potential for the conversion of HMF into DFF. The non-noble metal co-catalyst could significantly improve the separation and transfer efficiencies of the photogenerated charge carriers of the CN. Thus, our catalysts exhibited high photocatalytic performance for the dehydrogenation of HMF into DFF. Moreover, the dehydrogenation mechanism on the photocatalyst was studied through the control experiments and the characterization of catalysts.

Abstract:Biomass is a natural and renewable carbon resource. One of the possible green approaches to "carbon neutrality" is catalytic conversion of biomass resources into high value-added chemicals. As a result, photocatalytic selective oxidation of the biomass product 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to 2,5-dicarbonylfuran (DFF) is an ecologically benign and energy efficient method. In this study, 2D g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl heterostructures composites were prepared by easy ultrasonication-assisted stirring method for the first application of photocatalytic oxidation of 5-HMF to DFF. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized materials were characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, UV–vis, BET surface area, PL and EPR analysis. The experimental results show that the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl composite is superior to pure g-C 3 N 4 and BiOCl in the oxidation of 5-HMF to DFF. The improved photocatalytic performance of the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl composites can be attributed to the improved visible light absorption, the creation of compact and intact Z-type heterojunction, increased surface area and enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In addition, the photocatalyst has high stability and reusability. A putative photocatalytic process is proposed based on the respective energy band locations of these two semiconductors.

Abstract:Solar-driven catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) coupled with H2 evolution has been considered a promising approach. The exploration of an active and stable photocatalyst still remains challenging work. Herein, we found that the flexible ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride (UCNT) could be an ideal candidate. The UCNT exhibits photocatalytic performance in selective oxidation of HMF into DFF coupled with H2 evolution with activities of 95.0 and 92.0 μmol g–1 h–1 under visible light irradiation. Importantly, the UCNT also demonstrates high DFF selectivity (95%) and good cycling stability. The activity may be ascribed to the strong specific interaction between HMF and UCNT. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and density functional theory (DFT) results reveal that the twisted structure of HMF molecules could form a strong interaction between HMF and UCNT, reducing the dehydrogenation energy barrier for HMF oxidation. In addition, mechanistic studies reveal that •C6H4O3 is the key radical intermediate during the HMF oxidation process by a in situ electron spin resonance (ESR) trapping test. Our work clarifies the interaction of complex biomass molecules on the flexible catalyst surface and provides views on the further development of heterogeneous catalytic biomass conversion.

Abstract:2,5-Diformylfuran (DFF) is one of the products of selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), an important furan platform compound, and a new energy chemical, which is currently attracting much attention. Solar energy is considered to be a sustainable, clean, cheap, and green energy source. DFF synthesized by photocatalytic selective oxidation of HMF has the advantages of mild reaction conditions, easy separation of catalyst and product, green, and environmental protection, which has gradually become a research hotspot. This paper reviews the research progress in the catalytic conversion of HMF to DFF by photocatalytic oxidation in recent years, in particular the mechanisms of photocatalytic conversions of HMF are summarized, and different photocatalytic systems for photocatalytic oxidation of HMF are classified and summarized in detail, with emphasis on the selectivity of DFF. We hope that the present review will provide a great foundation and guideline for future studies of biomass cleaner valorization.

Abstract:A series of V2O5·nH2O/g-C3N4 (HVO/CN) heterogeneous composites were synthesized using an ultrasonic method and employed in the photocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) towards 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF). The HVO/CN-5 catalyst exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance with a 35.7 % yield and a 84 % of selectivity of DFF under visible light irradiation. A thorough investigation on the synthesized HVO/CN composite was executed to reveal the origin of the high photoactivity. The research results showed that the incorporation of HVO into CN widened the range of the visible-light response and improved the ability to separate the photo-induced charge carriers via a Z-scheme mechanism. Meanwhile, an increased concentration of oxygen vacancies was also observed in the composite, which enhanced the surface OH− content and facilitated the generation of hydroxyl radicals. This change is beneficial to the photocatalytic reaction since that hydroxyl and superoxide radicals are the main reactive species. A possible reaction pathway for the photocatalytic oxidation of 5-HMF to DFF was also suggested. This work may provide insights on the green and sustainable conversion of HMF to DMF via photocatalysis.

Abstract:Owing to the easy over-oxidation, it is a promising yet challenging task to explore renewable carbon resources to control the sunlight-driven selective catalytic oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), producing important chemical feedstocks, namely, less-oxidized 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA). Herein, we have developed a photocatalyst by anchoring a Ru complex on CdS quantum dots, which achieves selective oxidation of HMF toward DFF or HMFCA with high conversion (>81 %) and selectivity (>90 %), based on the controllable generation of two oxygen radicals under different atmospheres. Such selective conversion can also work well outside the laboratory by using natural sunlight. In particular, the selective production of HMFCA through photocatalytic HMF oxidation is achieved for the first time. More importantly, our photocatalyst is applicable for the selective oxidation of other compounds with hydroxyl and aldehyde groups.

Abstract:Conversion of biomass into high value products via environmentally benign processes remains a challenging task for chemists. Photocatalytic partial oxidation of the biochemical 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) has attracted much attention as DFF is known to be a pivotal precursor in the biochemical industry. Previously, this reaction has been catalyzed with transition metal based catalytic systems in organic solvents. Herein, we report the use of a covalent triazine framework (CTF) as a highly stable and porous organic photoactive polymer for the photocatalytic partial oxidation of HMF to DFF in water, using molecular oxygen as a green oxidant. The photocatalyst showed high efficiency in affording DFF as the target product with good reusability.

Abstract:Abstract5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) serves as a versatile platform compound bridging the realms of biomass resources and the fine chemicals industry, with its selective oxidation holding significant value. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NDPC) materials were synthesized by using urea as the nitrogen source and sucrose as the carbon source via a hard-template approach. These materials were subsequently employed in the selective oxidation of HMF to produce 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) under specific oxygen pressure conditions. The morphology and structure of NDPC were elucidated through SEM, XPS and XRD analyses. The impact of varying the molar ratio of N/C and nitrogen sources on the catalyst was examined, as well as the effects of different reaction conditions on HMF conversion and DFF selectivity were investigated. The results demonstrated an impressive 81.0% HMF conversion and a remarkable 97.9% DFF selectivity under the suitable conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibited consistent catalytic performance throughout the recycling experiments.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The selective biomass conversion of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5‐diformylfurane (DFF) through photocatalysis is of immense importance and has attracted much interest recently. However, its selectivity and conversion are still limited at present due to the lack of efficient photocatalysts to controllably activate the alcohol hydroxyl groups. Herein, Nb 2 O 5 / g ‐C 3 N 4 type‐II heterojunction photocatalysts to restrain the over‐oxidation are developed, which successfully adjust the active oxygen species and enhance the separation and transfer of photoexcited carriers. The system achieves selective oxidation of HMF to DFF with high selectivity (>99%) and conversion (53%) via the inhibition of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) production arising from the decomposition of H 2 O 2 . Moreover, h + is the main active species for photocatalytic selective oxidation of HMF, and ·O 2 − is the second for that. Herein, it offers an effective strategy to effectively improve the high‐selective conversion of biomass derivatives into high‐value‐added products.

Abstract:A photocatalytic selective oxidation strategy for preparing DFF from HMF is developed, using Ag/Ag3PO4 as the photocatalyst and O2 as the oxidizing agent. In contrast to previous photocatalytic oxidation strategies for HMF transformation, this catalytic system could efficiently generate 1O2 without other ROS under visible light irradiation. DFF would be obtained with 88 % selectivity with the optimal reaction conditions. The synthesis of 2,5‐diformylfuran (DFF) through photocatalytic oxidation of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an attractive approach. In this manuscript, a photocatalytic selective oxidation strategy for HMF was developed, using Ag/Ag3PO4 as the photocatalyst and O2 as the oxidizing agent. The prepared catalyst was characterized systematically by SEM, XRD, XPS, UV‐Vis, PL spectra, and so on. In contrast to previous photocatalytic oxidation strategies for HMF conversion, this catalytic system could efficiently generate 1O2 without other reactive oxygen species (ROS) under visible light irradiation. DFF would be obtained with about 90 % selectivity. Moreover, the exclusive formation of 1O2 was linked to the more positive conduction band potential (+0.90 eV) of Ag/Ag3PO4, confirmed by an array of characterization techniques. Additionally, the stability of the catalyst was assessed through cyclic testing and analyses including XRD, and XPS. Nonetheless, this catalytic system could potentially serve as a robust platform for various selective oxidation reactions in the future, due to its exclusive presence of 1O2 without the involvement of other ROS.

Abstract:Photocatalytic oxidation is an attractive approach for biomass valorization, but uncontrollable reactive oxygen species (ROS) inevitably initiates over-oxidation of target product, leading to low selectivity. Here we report that combining MnO2, WO3 with carbon nitride (CN) enables the construction of photocatalyst with electron trans-port channels and oxygen adsorption sites. Owing to the rapid transfer of photo-generated electrons to adsorbed O2, CN-WO3@MnO2 exhibited 13.5 and 1.18 times higher 1O2 and & BULL;O2- generation capacity than CN-WO3 with 92.8% lower & BULL;OH generation capacity, respectively. With the synergistic effect of & BULL;O2- and 1O2, 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) selectivity up to 79.6% at high 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) conversion (77.6%) was attained. Both experimental results and density functional theory calculations indicate that the construction of electron transport channels and oxygen adsorption sites can deliberately modulate the generation of ROS with desired oxidation ability, thus facilitating the efficient and selective oxidation of HMF into DFF.

Abstract:Rather than developing a kind of new material for photocatalytic conversion of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5‐diformyfuran (DFF), this work tried to provide a reasonable explanation for the anomalous phenomena of g‐C3N4 and S‐g‐C3N4 in the photocatalytic HMF conversion, and to reveal the deep reasons for the low conversion efficiency of HMF and DFF selectivity. Photocatalytic oxidation was a green and sustainable method for conversing the biomass derived platform molecule 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to high value‐added 2,5‐diformyfuran (DFF). In this work, both graphitized carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) and sulfur doped g‐C3N4 (S‐g‐C3N4) were fabricated, characterized and applied in the photocatalytic conversion of HMF. Accelerated separation of the photogenerated charge carriers was obtained on S‐g‐C3N4 with higher production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) including singlet oxygen (1O2) and superoxide radicals (⋅O2−), whereas relative higher HMF conversion rate and DFF selectivity were achieved on g‐C3N4. The mechanism investigation suggested that the contradictory phenomena may be caused by the stronger binding affinity of HMF on S‐g‐C3N4 compared with g‐C3N4 based on the temperature‐programmed desorption (TPD) measurement and theoretical calculation. The strong adsorption of HMF on the catalyst surface was unfavorable for desorption of the intermediates, and led to the accumulation of large number of carbon‐centered radicals. Part of these radicals may react with each other to generate polymerization products and block the active sites of the catalyst, resulted in the low conversion efficiency of HMF and DFF selectivity finally. This work provided a new sight and valuable theoretical and experimental basis for developing efficient photocatalysts for biomass conversion.

Abstract:Selective production of value-added platform chemicals from renewable biomass feedstocks and their derivatives has attracted tremendous attention with high potential in addressing global problems of energy and sustainability. In this work, a lead-halide perovskite (MAPbBr3, MA = methylammonium) is utilized as a photocatalyst for selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) using atmospheric O2 upon visible-light irradiation. Under minimally optimized conditions, the photocatalytic conversion of HMF in acetonitrile solvent reaches 100% with a DFF selectivity of over 90%, achieving an overall furanic carbon yield of over 96%. A detailed catalytic mechanism was proposed based on various spectroscopic and experimental results, revealing that the atmospheric O2, photogenerated electrons (e–), holes (h+), •O2–, and 1O2 species together play crucial roles in the effective and selective photo-oxidation of HMF to DFF.
