Abstract:In this work, we established a cascade cooling and two-step feeding technology for the energy-saving and fast synthesis of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) with a low molecular weight in a microreactor system. Because of the strong mixing capacity of the microreactor and the relatively higher initial reaction temperature of 60 degrees C compared to existing methods, the condensation reaction between the raw materials of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and n-butanal was highly intensified and the reaction rate was faster, along with less energy consumption for cooling. By reducing the aging temperature to 40-55 degrees C, which is far below the glass transition temperature of PVB, we could also lower energy consumption and improve the morphology of PVB. Benefiting from the new technology, the acetalization degree (AD) of PVB reached more than 78%. By applying the two-step n-butanal feeding method in the new technology, the utilization ratio of n-butanal was dramatically increased to more than 99.7%, which was the best result among current published reports. Moreover, a PVB product with a low molecular weight has been successfully prepared with the new technology. This work demonstrates a promising continuous microreaction process for greener and energy-saving synthesis of PVB.
Synthesis of Poly(vinyl Chloride)-B-poly(ethylene Glycol)-B-poly(vinyl Chloride) Block Copolymers by Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerizations

Abstract:Poly(ethylene glycol) terminated with xanthate (X-PEG-X) was synthesized and used as the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent for controlling vinyl chloride (VC) solution and suspension polymerizations to synthesize poly(vinyl chloride)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC) triblock copolymers. Results show that the molecular weights (MW) of block copolymers prepared by the solution polymerization are increased with the polymerization conversion, and the molecular weight distribution (MWD) index is lower than 1.65. X-PEG-X is amphiphilic and can effectively reduce the interfacial tension between water and oil. Thus, a novel VC RAFT suspension polymerization method was proposed to prepare PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC copolymers using X-PEG-X as the RAFT agent and a suspending agent. The block copolymer particles have no surface membranes, and MW of copolymer is increased with conversion. However, the block copolymers prepared by suspension polymerization exhibit wider MWD than the block copolymers prepared by solution polymerization, due to the two-phase mechanism of VC suspension polymerization. The chain extension of PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC with vinyl acetate (VAc) further prove the "living" nature of PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC copolymers and result the formation of PVAc-b-PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC-b-PVAc copolymer. PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC copolymers exhibit better hydrophilicity than PVC.

Abstract:In this work, we established a novel microstructured chemical system to intensify the synthesis process of poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) based on the mixing enhancement principle of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-n-butanal aqueous solution with hydrochloric acid. Because of the high mixing performance, a higher temperature (30-60 degrees C) with much higher reaction rate was applied. Through a study of the parameters of flow rate, temperature, and feeding ratios of n-butanal and H+ to the hydroxyl groups in PVA, the apparent butyral group content in PVB reached more than 60% with a residence time of 1 min in a microreactor, and reached 75% with an additional hour of aging time, much shorter than the conventional 8-10 h in low temperature batch reactors. The size of the primary PVB particle was smaller than 10 mu m, which might reduce the time and water consumption in the post washing process. This work provides a good example for operating reactions between macromolecules and small molecules in a microreactor system.
In Situ Crosslinking of Hyperbranched Polyglycerol in Casting Solutions and Its Effect on the Structure and Properties of Porous Pvdf Membranes

Abstract:Porous membranes were prepared via phase inversion process from casting solutions composed of poly(vinylidene fluoride), hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG), and N,N-dimethylacetamide. To seek a stable presence of HPG in the resulting membranes, it was crosslinked in the casting solutions using 4,4'-oxydiphthalic anhydride as the crosslinking agent. The membranes were characterized in terms of morphology, surface and bulk chemical compositions, water contact angle, porosity, water flux, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption experiments. The effects of HPG content and crosslinking degree on the membrane structure and properties were investigated. The increasing of crosslinking degree resulted in a significant improvement in HPG stability in the membrane matrix, and a remarkable enrichment of the crosslinked HPG at the separation surface was observed when the membrane was shaken in water at a relatively high temperature (60 degrees C). This enrichment led to a decrease in the value of water contact angle and an improvement in fouling-resistance. To optimize the membrane performance, a small amount of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as an additive, and it was found that the addition of PVP led to a considerable increase in water flux. In this paper,modification methods of PVA are reviewed,including crosslinking, grafting,blending,hybridization and substitution;their advantages and disadvantages are listed;and some comments are given for problems in modification methods. The application of modified PVA membrane is presented in detail. The development and application of PVA pervaporation membrane with excellent hydrophilicity and PVA membrane with high conductivity and low methanol permeability for fuel cell are prospected,respectively.

Abstract:To obtain the kinetic parameters of the chemical reaction between polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and n-butanal, a microreactor-based experimental platform, and the corresponding analysis methods, was developed. This information is important and required to obtain an in-depth understanding of the reaction and to control the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) synthesis process. Experimental results showed that the protonation of n-butanal had a low equilibrium constant, and the reverse reaction, involving the generation of hemiacetal, had a significant effect on total reaction rate, resulting in consistently low concentrations of hemiacetal. Measurement of the time-variation of hydroxyl, hemiacetal, and acetal concentrations provided the rate constants and activation energies for the multi-step reaction kinetic model. Finally, this model was used to estimate the variation of specie concentrations at early reaction time points assuming practical PVB synthesis conditions, which provided guidance for the enhancement of this synthetic process.

Abstract:Polyvinyl(butyral) (PVB) post-production waste collected from the windshields of end-of-life vehicles and post-consumer building laminated glass are valuable polymeric materials that can be reused. Every year, large amounts of PVB waste are still being buried in landfills owing to a lack of appropriate recycling techniques. Before reuse, PVB should be thoroughly cleaned of solid contaminants such as glass dust, fused heating wires, and other waste polymers, metals, and ceramics. This can be done by polymer dissolution and filtration. In this study, we propose the purification of PVB from contamination by dissolving the post-consumer polymeric materials into single and binary organic solvents. As part of the experimental work, measurements and optimization of the dissolution time of PVB were performed. PVB dissolves faster when a binary solvent (2-propanol + ethyl acetate) than pure 2-propanol is used. From the point of view of the practical application of PVB solutions, measurements of density and dynamic viscosity as a function of PVB concentration and temperature were performed. The PVB solutions obtained in this work can be widely used as glues for glass, ceramics, metal, impregnating, and insulating materials or as paint additives that are entirely transparent for visible light and to block UV rays.

Abstract:Nowadays membrane technology has been widely employed in the treatment of in-dustrial wastewater and municipal sewage. In the last decade,plenty of work focused on the preparation and industrialization of advanced polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes with excellent performance has been carried out by the Chemical Engineering Department in Tsing-hua University,which follows the line of preparation formula design,advanced production and membrane module development. This paper reviewed the history information about these re-searches. Firstly,PVDF membranes with good performance were prepared via thermally in-duced phase separation (TIPS) method based on thermodynamic and dynamic researches on the membrane formation process. Secondly,advanced production of PVDF hollow-fiber membrane was achieved by an effective combination of material processing and unit operation. Finally, different modules were designed and fabricated according to the characteristic of PVDF mem-brane prepared via TIPS method and different application situations. The results show that the PVDF membranes prepared via TIPS method break through the traditional phase separation lim-itation and exceed performance expectation;as a result TIPS method can be the top option for wastewater treatment.
Fabrication of Recyclable and Biodegradable PBAT Vitrimer Via Construction of Highly Dynamic Cross-Linked Network

Abstract:The emergence of biodegradable materials has not satisfactorily addressed the issue of plastic waste management, owing to their high cost and poor mechanical performance and durability that impair their potential to replace traditional plastics. In this study, a dynamic cross-linked network with robust remoldability was fabricated in PBAT. Transesterification catalysts were employed to catalyze the reaction of beta-hydroxyl groups produced from the branching reaction of polyester end groups and epoxy branching agents with the abundant ester groups of PBAT to produce biodegradable PBAT vitrimers. Swelling experiments, DMA tests and stress relaxation experiments confirmed the presence of the dynamic cross-linking structure, while rheological analysis demonstrated that the highly catalyst-loaded PBAT vitrimer dynamic cross-linked network could achieve chain relaxation by exchanging bonds quickly at physical entanglement and chemical cross-linking points. Multiple recycling experiments further demonstrated that the robust dynamic cross-linked network of PBAT vitrimers possessed both strong stress relaxation ability and remoldability, thus conferring excellent recyclability to PBAT. Upon recycling 4 times, the elongation at break of the PBAT vitrimer remained at 93.46 % (with a tensile strength retention of 85.99 %), whereas the raw PBAT could only maintain an elongation at break of 28.01 % (with a tensile strength retention of 56.09 %). TGA and hydrolysis experiments revealed that PBAT vitrimers exhibited better degradation performance relative to raw PBAT. PBAT vitrimers, featuring excellent mechanical performance and durability, can be recycled several times in easily recyclable settings, thus reducing production costs, and finally biodegrade after disposal, thereby serving as a viable replacement for traditional plastics. This straightforward and practicable approach provides a solution for plastic waste management.

Abstract:To date, remarkable progress has been achieved in the fabrication of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes with high performance for applications in wastewater treatment. After a comprehensive overview of recent progress on the preparation of PVDF membranes via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method, this paper provided historical information about the plenty of work focused on the preparation and advanced industrialization of PVDF membranes that was carried out by Beijing Key Laboratory of Membrane Materials and Engineering of Tsinghua University (Beijing, China). The work followed the line of formula design, advanced production, and membrane module development. Firstly, an innovative PVDF membrane with good performance was prepared via TIPS (liquid–liquid, L–L) method based on exhaustive thermodynamic and dynamic researches on the membrane formation process. Secondly, advanced production of the PVDF hollow fiber membrane was achieved by an effective combination of material processing and unit operation. Additionally, different ultrafiltration (UF) modules were fabricated according to various application situations. The final step explored the possibility of using an integrated membrane solution that adopted the modules where wastewater treatment was intended for water recycling, as shown in four application cases. The application results have shown that PVDF membranes prepared via TIPS (L–L) method break through the traditional phase separation limitation and exceed performance expectation. Optimization of a polyvinyl butyral synthesis process based on response surface methodology and artificial neural network

Abstract:High quality polyvinyl butyral (PVB) can be used as the intermediate film of automobile and building glass and the packaging film of photovoltaic cells. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize its synthesis process to obtain suitable products with a high acetalization degree (AD) and small particle size (d p). In this work, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) was selected as the catalyst, and response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were utilized to optimize the synthesis process of PVB. The concentration of polyvinyl alcohol (A), the dosage of DES (B) and n-butanal (C), and the aging temperature (D) were selected as process variables, and the comprehensive score (AD, d p and material and energy consumption) was introduced as the response. The results showed that single-factors B, C, D, and the interactions AB, BC and CD had significant effects on the comprehensive score, and the qualified PVB products (AD > 81%, d p = 3-3.5 μm) were obtained under the optimal conditions obtained by RSM and ANN models. ANN is a better and more precise optimization tool than RSM. Also, DES played a dual role in catalysis and dispersion in the synthesis of PVB and showed good reusability, so it has great application potential in PVB industrial production.

Abstract:In situ free radical polymerization was proven to be successful for the preparation of PVDF membranes with superior mechanical behaviors and enhanced antifouling properties. Micro-structure adjustment of PVDF solution via in situ polymerization was investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The DLS and SEM results verified the formation of supramolecular polymer–copolymer aggregates. The narrow distribution of the supramolecular aggregates explained the decreasing surface tension, increasing viscosity with trivial strain thinning behavior and accelerating precipitation rate of the PVDF casting solution. The resultant PVDF membranes possessed narrowly distributed pore size and molecular weight cut off (MWCO) of the final filtration properties, which were attributed to the aggregates; additionally, their corresponding mean effective pore size (μ) and MWCO increased with increasing concentration of the monomers via in situ polymerization. Further, in situ polymerization not only enlarged the recovery water flux after filtration experiments with bovine serum albumin (BSA) but also improved the hydrophilicity of both the top-surface and the bottom-surface of the PVDF membranes. Additionally, in situ polymerization modulated the PVDF membrane configurations, varying from stripe-shaped grains to agglomerates of globule (with one of the globules bearing on the surface of another). The tunable morphologies, combined with the progressive enhanced crystallinity of the α and β phase (largely in the β phase form), were used to interpret the superior mechanical properties of the resulting PVDF membranes.

Abstract:AbstractDevising energy‐efficient strategies for the depolymerization of plastics and the recovery of their structural components in high yield and purity is key to a circular plastics economy. Here, we report a case study in which we demonstrate that vinylogous urethane (VU) vitrimers synthesized from bis‐polyethylene glycol acetoacetates (aPEG) and tris(2‐aminoethyl)amine can be degraded by water at moderate temperature with almost quantitative recovery (≈98 %) of aPEG. The rate of depolymerization can be controlled by the temperature, amount of water, molecular weight of aPEG, and composition of the starting material. These last two parameters also allow one to tailor the mechanical properties of the final materials, and this was used to access soft, tough, and brittle vitrimers, respectively. The straightforward preparation and depolymerization of the aPEG‐based VU vitrimers are interesting elements for the design of polymer materials with enhanced closed‐loop recycling characteristics.

Abstract:Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) hollow fiber membranes were prepared via wet-spinning method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as additive. The effects of PVP and PVB concentration, bore fluid composition on the membrane formation were investigated by viscosity, light transmission, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ultrafiltration respectively. Results revealed that PVB and PVP have a good miscibility. Addition of PVP mainly changed the kinetic property of the dope, such as the increased viscosity, the delayed demixing, etc. The cross-sections of the resulting membranes showed a similar asymmetric structure. Ultrafiltration showed that the rejection of membrane increased, but the flux firstly increased then decreased with an increase in PVP concentration. The low PVB concentration in the dope caused a loose cross-sectional morphology, which improved the water flux of membrane. Moreover notable difference occurred at the internal surface of PVB hollow fiber membrane when N,N-dimethulacetamide (DMAc) was added to the bore fluid. As a result, membrane exhibited a high flux with no significant change in retention performance.

Abstract:A novel microwave (MW)-based method was developed for in-situ cross-linking/polymerization of polyacrylic acid (PAA) onto hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane for preparation of PVDFMW catalytic-membrane system. Unlike traditional thermal techniques, the use of MW radiation provided faster PAA polymerization and synthesis of PVDFMW membranes with excellent mechanical stability and high permeability. Air cooling and the dose-wise application of MW were the most influential parameters on the quality of PAA grafting and on the physical properties of PVDFMW membranes. Detailed surface characterization of PVDFMW revealed pores of the upper surface were occupied with PAA molecules. Nano zero-valent-iron (nZVI)-decorated PVDFMW membranes (nZVI-PVDFMW) were prepared and their catalytic activities were tested for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) in a cross-flow system. The nZVI-PVDFMW system demonstrated 52% ± 0.5 of BPA removal under low permeate flux (50 L/m2. h) in the presence of 10 mM of H2O2. The current study demonstrated MW is an advantageous technique for the preparation of composite membranes with ultra-fine morphology and improved physical properties for use in water treatment applications.

Fabrication and Characterization of PVDF Hollow Fiber Membranes Employing In-Situ Self-Assembly Modulation Concept

Abstract:We develop a novel polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane utilizing the concept of in-situ self-assembly modulation, which is in terms of in-situ synthesis of amphiphilic copolymers and in-situ solubilization of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Utilizing the polytetrahydrofuran dimethacrylate ester (PTMGDA) and polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether methyl methacrylate (PEGMA) as reaction monomers, amphiphilic copolymers are in-situ synthesized, denoted as “P(PTMGDA-r-PEGMA)”. Results show that P(PTMGDA-r-PEGMA) and PVP have the synergistic effects on configuration and separation performance of PVDF membrane. P(PTMGDA-r-PEGMA) with high ratio in hydrocarbon chain (75.2%) and PVP not only effectively tunes micro-structure of the dope solutions but also results in the enhancement of the resultant membranes’ break strength and their stable permeability. Besides, the supramolecular aggregates of PVDF-P(PTMGDA-r-PEGMA)–PVP (size: 76–157nm) work as “template” dependence of the macrovoids, which appear in the fibers׳ sponge-like cross-section structure, hence leading to the narrowing pore size distribution. Furthermore, the macrovoids’ size enlarges with the increase of content of P(PTMGDA-r-PEGMA) and PVP. It is also found that the permeation flux is controlled by the diffusion of PVP from the interior dope solution and pore-forming of P(PTMGDA-r-PEGMA) during demixing process, which is consistent with the in-situ self-assembly modulation concept. Finally, the newly developed PVDF hollow fiber membranes demonstrate remarkable long-term stable permeability.

Abstract:In this work, an environmentally‐friendly deep eutectic solvent (DES) was employed as a catalyst to generate polyvinyl butyral (PVB) resins from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with a weakly acidic polymer (polyacrylic acid [PAA]) as an emulsifier. Finally, high viscosity PVB resins with molecular weight of 110,000–200,000 g · mol−1 and acetalization degree above 83% were successfully synthesized, which was found to satisfy the requirements for interlayer films between safety glass. Furthermore, it was well proved that the properties of PVB resins immensely depend on the molecular structures of the PVA. The molecular weight of the PVB, independent of alcoholic degrees of the PVA, indicated an upward trend with the increase of the molecular weight of the PVA. As for these four PVBs with high molecular weight, the Tg was sensitive to the content of hydroxyl and acetal groups rather than molecular weight, associated with the inter‐ or intra‐molecule hydrogen bond between OH. PVB‐1799 and PVB‐1797 had higher Ti and Tg than that of PVB‐1788 and PVB‐1795 because the former had low contents of vinyl acetate group (VAc) and alcohol hydroxyl group (VOH). The tensile strength of PVBs was all higher than 30 Mpa, and the elongation at break was about 300% due to their high molecular weights.

Preparation of Multipurpose Polyvinylidene Fluoride Membranes via a Spray-Coating Strategy Using Waterborne Polymers

Abstract:As reported herein, the waterborne polymers poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) P(GMA-co-mPEGMA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were used to prepare multipurpose polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes via a direct spray-coating method. P(GMA-co-mPEGMA) and PEI were alternately sprayed onto the PVDF membrane to yield stable cross-linked copolymer coatings. The successful coating of polymers onto the membrane surface was verified by scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization. The coated membrane exhibited oil rejection rates that exceeded 99.0% for oil water mixture separation and 98.0% for oil/water emulsion separation. The flux recovery ratio reached 96.7% after bovine serum albumin filtration and washing with water. The removal efficiencies of the coated membrane M3 for Congo red, methyl orange, methylene blue, and crystal violet, Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) were 82.4, 83.9, 6.3, 26.8, 90.6, 91.3, and 86.2%, respectively. Thus, it can be used for the removal of dyes and heavy metal ions from wastewater. The antibacterial activities of the coated membranes were also confirmed by the inhibition zone tests and confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis. In addition, the cross-linking strategy provides the coated membranes with excellent durability and repeatability. More importantly, the use of water as the solvent can ensure that the application of these membrane coatings proceeds via a very safe and environmentally friendly coating process.
Development of Antifouling Poly(vinyl Chloride) Blend Membranes by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract:In this study, antifouling poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) blend membranes were prepared by blending the PVC based amphiphilic copolymer PVC-g-poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PVC-g-PHEMA), synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), into the hydrophobic PVC matrix via the nonsolvent-induced phase separation method. The in situ ATRP reaction solutions were also used as the blend additives to improve membrane performance. Attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the blend membranes based on the two blend routes exhibited similar surface chemical compositions. The membrane morphology and surface wettability were determined by scanning electronic microscopy and water contact angle measurement, respectively. The blend membranes showed improved water permeability, comparable rejections and enhanced antifouling properties compared with the pure PVC membrane. The PVC blend membranes also had excellent long-term stability in terms of chemical compositions and fouling resistance. The results demonstrated that ATRP was a promising technique to synthesize amphiphilic copolymer and prepare stable blend antifouling membranes. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
