Abstract:Microphase separated block copolymer electrolyte (BCE) systems are attractive candidates for electrochemical systems because the concentrated ionic groups in one block provide pathways for facile ion transport while the non-ionic block bestows mechanical integrity and suppresses excess water uptake. Numerous researchers have prepared and studied bulk BCEs as ion conductors, but the inherent complex nature and imprecise architecture of these materials make it difficult to extract definitive conclusions on how the macromolecular structure influences ion transport. In this work, the process of block copolymer lithography was demonstrated to create model nano-confined polymer electrolyte brushes that mimic lamellae structures found in bulk BCE membranes. Both nano-confined anion and cation conducting polymer brushes were prepared and excellent ionic conductivities (10(-2) S cm(-1) to 10(-1) S cm(-1)) were obtained. Surprisingly, the nano-confined polycation and polyanion brushes displayed similar, or in some instances lower, in-plane electrical resistance values to the non-confined samples and shrinkage upon introduction of ionic charges. Using 2D force mapping AFM and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, it was inferred that the nano-confined polymer electrolytes were less susceptible to counterion condensation explaining the unexpected changes in brush thickness after introduction of ionic moieties and the relatively low electrical resistance values. Overall, the block copolymer lithography platform presented in this work enables fabrication of precisely defined BCEs to systematically investigate how the microstructure and confinement governs counterion condensation and ion transport.

Abstract:The type of self-assembled structure has a significant impact on the ionic conductivity of block copolymer or liquid crystalline (LC) ion conductors. In this study, we focus on the effect of self-assembled structures on the ionic conductivity of a non-block copolymer, LC ion conductor, which is a mixture of an azobenzene monomer (NbAzo), pentaerythritol tetre(3-mercapropionate) (PETMP), and a lithium salt, lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI). The self-assembled structures and ionic conductivities of ion conductors having different doping ratios of lithium salt to monomer were examined. With the increase in the doping ratio, the self-assembled structure transforms from lamellae (LAM) to double gyroid (GYR). The effect of self-assembled structure on ionic conductivity was analyzed; it was found that the conductivity of the GYR structure was about 3.6 times that of the LAM one, indicating that obtaining the GYR structure is more effective in improving ionic conductivity.

Abstract:The self-assembled structure has a significant impact on the performance of ion conductors. We prepared a new type of electrolyte with self-assembled structures from an azobenzene-based liquid crystalline (LC) monomer and its corresponding polymer. By doping different amounts of monomers and lithium salt LiTFSI, the self-assembled nanostructure of the electrolyte was changed from lamellae to double gyroid. The ionic conductivity of the azobenzene-based electrolytes with the double gyroid structure was 1.64×10 -4 S cm -1 , higher than most PEO-based polymer electrolytes. Azobenzene-based system provides a new strategy to design solid electrolytes with self-assembled structures that may be potentially used in solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The most daunting challenge of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) is the development of materials with simultaneously high ionic conductivity and mechanical strength. Herein, SPEs of lithium bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)-doped poly(propylene monothiocarbonate)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PPMTC-b-PEO) block copolymers (BCPs) with both blocks associating with Li+ ions are prepared. It is found that the PPMTC-b-PEO/LiTFSI electrolytes with double conductive phases exhibit much higher ionic conductivity (2 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at r.t.) than the BCP electrolytes with a single conductive phase. Concurrently, the storage moduli of PPMTCn-b-PEO44/LiTFSI electrolytes are approximate to 1-4 orders of magnitude higher than that of the neat PEO/LiTFSI electrolytes. Therefore, simultaneous improvement of ionic conductivity and mechanical properties is achieved by construction of a microphase-separated and disordered structure with double conductive phases.

Abstract:Polymer solid-state electrolytes offer great promise for battery materials with high energy density, mechanical stability, and improved safety. However, their low ion conductivities have so far limited their potential applications. Here, it is shown for poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers that the super-stoichiometric addition of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) as lithium salt leads to the formation of a crystalline PEO block copolymer phase with exceptionally high ion conductivities and low activation energies. The addition of LiTFSI further induces block copolymer phase transitions into bi-continuous Fddd and gyroid network morphologies, providing continuous 3D conduction pathways. Both effects lead to solid-state block copolymer electrolyte membranes with ion conductivities of up to 1·10-1 S cm-1 at 90 °C, decreasing only moderately to 4·10-2 S cm-1 at room temperature, and to >1·10-3 S cm-1 at -20 °C, corresponding to activation energies as low as 0.19 eV. The co-crystallization of PEO and LiTFSI with ether and carbonate solvents is observed to play a key role to realize a super-ionic conduction mechanism. The discovery of PEO super-ionic conductivity at high lithium concentrations opens a new pathway for fabrication of solid polymer electrolyte membranes with sufficiently high ion conductivities over a broad temperature range with widespread applications in electrical devices.

Abstract:The properties of conducting polymers are strongly influenced by structural changes induced by long-range order, which can be achieved using block copolymers that self-assemble into crystalline structures. These blends result in unique mesophases distinct from the pure components, with self-assembly behavior modulated by solution conditions and polymer architectures. High-throughput small angle x-ray scattering data of aqueous Pluronic P123 (PEO20- PPO70-PEO20) and conjugated polyelectrolyte poly[3-(potassium-4-butanoate) thiophene-2,5-diyl] (PPBT) blends at various concentrations and temperatures were automatically classified into phase maps by autophasemap, an unsupervised statistical analysis algorithm. The outlined phase boundaries revealed that adding PPBT to high P123 concentrations induced a transition from cubic-ordered spherical micelles to hexagonally packed cylindrical micelles. Shear alignment via rheological small angle neutron scattering of the blends produced monolithic oriented cubic and hexagonal crystal gels. These insights into the self-assembly of conductive polymer blends will aid in the design of soft materials with tunable structural and electronic properties.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes have been considered as the promising candidates to improve the safety and stability of high-energy lithium metal batteries. However, the practical applications of solid polymer electrolytes are still limited by the low ionic conductivity, poor interfacial contact with electrodes, narrow electrochemical window and weak mechanical strength. Here, a series of novel block copolymer electrolytes with three-dimensional networks are designed by cross-linked copolymerization of the polyethylene glycol soft segments and hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer hard segments. Their ionic migration performances and interface compatibilities with Li metal anode have been optimized delicately by tailoring the ratio of these functional units. The optimized block copolymer electrolyte has shown an amorphous crystalline structure, a high ionic conductivity of ∼5.7×10−4 S cm−1, high lithium ion transference number (∼0.49), wide electrochemical window up to ∼4.65 V (vs. Li+/Li) and favorable mechanical strength at 55 °C. Furthermore, the enhanced interface compatibility can well support the normal operations of lithium metal batteries using both LiFePO4 and LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathodes. This study not only paves a new way to develop solid polymer electrolyte with optimizing functional units, but also provides a polymer electrolyte design strategy for the application demand of lithium metal battery.

Abstract:The self-consistent field theory (SCFT) complemented with the Poisson-Boltzmann equation is employed to explore self-assembly of polyelectrolyte copolymers composed of charged blocks A and neutral blocks B. We have extended SCFT to dissociating triblock copolymers and demonstrated our approach on three characteristic examples: (1) diblock copolymer (AB) melt, (2) symmetric triblock copolymer (ABA) melt, (3) triblock copolymer (ABA) solution with added electrolyte. For copolymer melts, we varied the composition (that is, the total fraction of A-segments in the system) and the charge density on A blocks and calculated the phase diagram that contains ordered mesophases of lamellar, gyroid, hexagonal, and bcc symmetries, as well as the uniform disordered phase. The phase diagram of charged block copolymer melts in the charge density - system composition coordinates is similar to the classical phase diagram of neutral block copolymer melts, where the composition and the Flory mismatch interaction parameter chi(AB) are used as variables. We found that the transitions between the polyelectrolyte mesophases with the increase of charge density occur in the same sequence, from lamellar to gyroid to hexagonal to bcc to disordered morphologies, as the mesophase transitions for neutral diblocks with the decrease of chi(AB). In a certain range of compositions, the phase diagram for charged triblock copolymers exhibits unexpected features, allowing for transitions from hexagonal to gyroid to lamellar mesophases as the charge density increases. Triblock polyelectrolyte solutions were studied by varying the charge density and solvent concentration at a fixed copolymer composition. Transitions from lamellar to gyroid and gyroid to hexagonal morphologies were observed at lower polymer concentrations than the respective transitions in the similar neutral copolymer, indicating a substantial influence of the charge density on phase behavior. Abstract:Mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer(MJLCP) has attracted great attention because of its rigid conformation, facile synthesis, and structural controllability. In this feature article, the self-assembly of MJLCP-based block copolymers(BCPs) is briefly reviewed, especially the nanostructures of rod-coil diblock copolymers(di BCPs), rod-rod di BCPs, and triblock copolymers. In addition,the properties of the self-assembled BCPs are also summarized, including their applications as liquid crystalline thermoplastic elastomers and solid polymer electrolytes. The article also discusses the major challenges and future directions in the study of MJLCP-based BCPs.
Rapid Ion Conduction Enabled by Synergism of Oriented Liquid Crystals and Electron-Deficient Boron Atoms in Multiblock Copolymer Electrolyte for Advanced Solid-State Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) with characteristics of self-orientation have exhibited superiorities in construction of ordered ion channels for rapid Li-ion transport. Herein, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is employed to synthesize a unique type of boron-containing LCs based ABCBA type multiblock copolymers for the first time. The composite block copolymer electrolytes (BCPEs) are fabricated by introducing the copolymer electrolytes into glass fiber separator via solution-casting method. Noteworthily, LCs can not only provide ordered ion channels for efficient ion conduction, but also ameliorate the mechanical strength. Meanwhile, the nitrile groups with high polarity from LCs are able to further facilitate lithium salt dissociation and reinforce electrochemical stability of the system. Crucially, boron elements with electron deficiency can anchor anions and adsorb impurities to endow BCPEs with boosted ion transport capability and sufficient electrochemical stability. Consequently, the well-designed electrolyte shows high ionic conductivity of 1.13 x 10-4 S cm-1 (30 degrees C), and broadened electrochemical stability window of 4.85 V. Impressively, the assembled Li/ LiFePO4 cells and even Li/LiMnxFe1-xPO4 high-voltage cells exhibit remarkable performances. This work provides a synthetic strategy of structure-controlled polymer electrolyte matrix and illustrates that the BCPEs are definitely a category of satisfactory electrolyte candidate for high-performance solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:In this work, a series of diblock copolymers with a defined length of a soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) segment and different lengths of liquid crystalline (LC) poly[11-(4-cyano-4'-biphenoxy)undecyl methacrylate] (P11CBMA) segments were synthesized by using the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. Their microphase separation behavior and dielectric properties were carefully investigated. The well-defined diblock copolymers PDMSm-b-P11CBMA(n) possess three different soft/rigid ratios (m = 62, n = 15, 22, and 40) and narrow molecular distributions (PDI <= 1.25). Due to the supramolecular cooperative motion effect, the copolymers can form lamellar morphology (W-LC = 57.8%), predominant lamellar morphology with PDMS cylindrical defects (W-LC = 66.8%), and PDMS cylinders embedded in the LC matrix (W-LC = 78.3%) after annealing at 160 degrees C (above T-i) under N-2 for 24 h, respectively. The dielectric properties of the block copolymers were strongly influenced by the microphase separated morphologies and orientational directions of mesogens. Compared to homopolymer P11CBMA, PDMSm-b-P11CBMA(n) showed higher dielectric constants due to the confinement effect of microdomain dimensions. The dielectric constants of diblock copolymers could be further improved by aligning mesogens parallel to the electric field through substrate treatments. These findings will inspire researchers to design and develop novel LC block copolymers for dielectric elastomer actuator applications.

Abstract:Liquid electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries suffer from leakage, flammability, and lithium dendrites, making polymer electrolyte a potential alternative. Herein, a series of ABA triblock copolymers (ABA-x) containing a mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) with a polynorbornene backbone as segment A and a second polynorbornene-based polymer having poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side chains as segment B were synthesized through tandem ring-opening metathesis polymerizations. The block copolymers can self-assemble into ordered morphologies at 200 °C. After doping of lithium salts and ionic liquid (IL), ABA-x self-assembles into cylindrical structures. The MJLCP segments with a high glass transition temperature and a stable liquid crystalline phase serve as physical crosslinking points, which significantly improve the mechanical performance of the polymer electrolytes. The ionic conductivity of ABA-x/lithium salt/IL is as high as 10−3 S·cm−1 at ambient temperature owing to the high IL uptake and the continuous phase of conducting PEO domains. The relationship between ionic conductivity and temperature fits the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equation. In addition, the electrolyte films are flame retardant owing to the addition of IL. The polymer electrolytes with good safety and high ambient-temperature ionic conductivity developed in this work are potentially useful in solid lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Ionic liquids are promising media for self-assembling block copolymers in applications such as energy storage. A robust design of block copolymer formulations in ionic liquids requires fundamental knowledge of their self-organization at the nanoscale. To this end, here, we focus on modeling two-component systems comprising a Poly(ethylene oxide)-poly (propylene oxide)-Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) block copolymer (Pluronic P105: EO37PO58EO37) and room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): protic ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), aprotic ionic liquids (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6), or 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4). Rich structural polymorphism was exhibited, including phases of micellar (sphere) cubic, hexagonal (cylinder), bicontinuous cubic, and lamellar (bilayer) lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) ordered structures in addition to solution regions. The characteristic scales of the structural lengths were obtained using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data analysis. On the basis of phase behavior and structure, the effects of the ionic liquid solvent on block copolymer organization were assessed and contrasted to those of molecular solvents, such as water and formamide.
