Abstract:Self-assembly has been a powerful method to fabricate the polymer materials with well-defined structures and morphologies. Such assembled materials have shown wide potential applications in many fields such as nanomaterial, nanomedicine, lithography, and microelectronic. Crystallization has been a general behavior of stereoregular polymers. Besides the various noncovalent interactions, crystallization of polymer blocks or end groups can be an efficient way to manipulate the self-assembly pathway and assembled structures of polymers in both solid and solution. Crystallization-driven self-assembly has been widely implemented for the semicrystalline block copolymers (BCPs) and end-functionalized polymers. This minireview briefly presents the recent progresses in the crystallization-driven self-assembly of BCPs and end-functionalized polymers in both solid and solution states. Formation process, mechanism, and hierarchical structure of the crystallization-induced assemblies for BCPs and end-functionalized polymers are highlighted.
Self-assembly of Linear Triblock Copolymers under Cylindrical Nanopore Confinements

Abstract:The self-assembly of linear ABC triblock copolymers under cylindrical confinements is investigated in two-dimensional space using the real-space self-consistent field theory. The effects of confinement degrees and preferential strengths on the triblock copolymer phase behaviors with special polymer parameters are first considered. On one hand, different confinement degrees cause different phase behaviors in nanopores with the neutral surfaces. Moreover, the strongly preferential surface fields can surpass the confinement degrees and volume fractions in determing the confined phase behaviors. On the other hand, in contrast, confined morphologies are more sensitive to the variations in the A-preferential surface field strength. Subsequently, the incompatibility degrees between different blocks are systematically varied under cylindrical nanopore confinements. Under cylindrical nanopore confinements, the morphologies are very sensitive to the variations in the incompatibility degrees. Meanwhile, nanopore confinements can affect order-disorder and order-order transition points in the bulk. The corresponding free, internal, and entropic energies as well as the order parameters are also quantificationally examined to deeply investigate the confined phase mechanisms, and a number of morphological transitions are confirmed to be of first-order. These findings may guide the design of novel nanostructures based on triblock copolymers by introducing confinements.

Abstract:Crystallisation-driven self-assembly (CDSA) has become an extremely valuable technique in the preparation of well-defined nanostructures using diblock copolymers. The use of triblock copolymers is considerably less well-known on account of more complex syntheses and assembly methods despite the functional advantages provided by a third block. Herein, we show the simple preparation of well-defined tuneable 1D and 2D structures based on poly(lactide) triblock copolymers of different block ratios synthesised by ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation, where a phase diagram based on a novel unimer solubility approach is proposed. Using a series of poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(N, N-dimethylacrylamide) (PLLA-b-PDMA) diblock copolymers and PDMA-b-PLLA-b-PDMA triblock copolymers with different core/corona ratios, single solvent CDSA processes revealed that comparatively hydrophilic polymers were liable to achieve 2D platelets, while the less hydrophilic counterparts yield 'transition state' wide cylinders and pure 1D cylinders. The length of crystalline core block is also shown to play an important role in fixed corona/core ratio systems, where a longer core block is prone to form cylindrical structures due to a lack of overall solubility, whereas a shorter block forms platelets. Importantly, this approach reveals contrary results to conventional theories, which state that longer solvophilic blocks relative to the core-forming block should favour more curved core/corona interfaces. Our morphological transitions are shown in both di-and tri-block copolymer systems, showing the generalisation of these assembly methods towards promising methodologies for the rational design of PLLA-based nanocarriers in the biomedical realm.

Abstract:AbstractAlthough a great deal of unique nanostructures were already obtained from polymer self-assemblies in terms of conventional parameters, the self-assembly under the confinement is still not well understood. Here, dissipative particle dynamics simulations were used to explore the self-assemble behaviors of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements. First several unusual morphologies, such as multilayer onion, coupled helix, and stacked lamella, were distinguished from the total 210 simulations. Second, the influences of three important parameters (block sequence, wall selectivity, and spherical radius) on the morphologies were discussed in detail. Finally, the dynamics evolution of several typical aggregates was examined. This simulation enriches micelle morphologies for the self-assembly of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements and is helpful to understand the formation of valuable nanostructures from linear ABC terpolymers.

Abstract:Brownian dynamics simulations are performed to investigate self-assembly behavior of rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers that contain two types of rod blocks. These rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers are capable of self-assembling into liquid crystalline (LC) structures with hierarchy. The morphologies of the hierarchical LC structures can be controlled by temperature, symmetry of LC blocks, and block length. As the temperature decreases, a transition from isotropic lamellae to smectic C lamellae is observed, accompanied by an increase in orientational ordering and tilt angle of rod blocks. For the hierarchical lamellae-in-lamella structures formed by symmetric block copolymers, there are two LC phases with nearly identical ordering and tilt angle for two rod blocks. While for the lamellae-in-lamellae formed by asymmetric block copolymers, the two LC phases exhibit two different length scales with diverse ordering degrees and tilt angles. By adjusting the lengths of coil and rod blocks, the stability regions of the structures are mapped out in space of the block length versus the temperature. The findings in the present work could provide useful information for understanding the self-assembly behavior of rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers and designing hierarchical liquid crystalline structures.

Abstract:The multiblock copolymers, which exhibit more complex block composition and sequences than those of di- or tri-block copolymers, have attracted more and more scientific interest and attention in the past years. The ABCBA linear pentablock terpolymer with block number of 5 is a representative model and starting point for investigating the self-assembly of multiblock copolymers, which is helpful for understanding the assembled structures and solution properties of biomacromolecules with complex sequence structures. Compared with AB diblock copolymers and ABC triblock terpolymers, the ABCBA pentablock terpolymers have more intricate morphologies and have better mechanical properties with similar morphologies. This review will mainly focus on ABCBA linear pentablock terpolymers and systematically summary the recent research progress in self-assembly of ABCBA linear pentablock terpolymers in bulk and solution as well as their potential applications in various technical fields including drug carriers, surface coatings, inorganic material templates, battery materials, and polymer gel.

Abstract:We conducted a dissipative particle dynamics simulation to explore the self-assembly behaviours of side-chain liquid crystalline copolymers in solvents poor for comb blocks. Our results show that the copolymers are able to self-assemble into various aggregates such as micelles and vesicles, and especially into deformed structures such as rectangle cylinders. The morphology of the aggregates depends on the concentration of copolymers and a series of structural parameters such as the length of the coil blocks. Three kinds of morphology diagrams are mapped out to gain insight into the effect of these parameters on the self-assembly behaviours. Moreover, the aggregate structures such as the spatial arrangement of the rigid side chain are analysed, and it was found that the interfaces of the aggregates are greatly influenced by the packing of the side chains. We also investigated the influence of the rod-to-coil conformation transition of side chains on the self-assembly, motivated by stimuli-responsive polymer systems. A transformation from a disk-like structure to a vesicle was observed as the rod-to-coil conformation transition occurs. A comparison between the available experimental observations and the simulation results is made, and agreement is achieved.

Abstract:Crystalline-coil block copolymers (BCPs) with an amphiphilic corona-forming block broaden the range of solvents in which crystallization-driven self-assembly experiments can be carried out. These materials allow one to examine how rather large changes in solvent polarity can affect the self-assembly process, leading to novel uniform structures. Here, we describe the synthesis and self-assembly properties of a crystalline-brush BCP, PFS27-b-P(EG-E) MA(48) (PFS, poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane), and P(EG-E)MA, poly(tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether methacrylate); the subscripts refer to the mean degrees of polymerization). Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a common good solvent for both blocks, whereas the corona polymer itself is soluble in alcohols ranging from 2-propanol to 1-decanol and in octane and decane. Self-assembly in 2-propanol was "normal", forming long (>5 mu m) fiber-like micelles of uniform width when the polymer suspended in solvent was heated (i.e., 80 degrees C) and cooled. Micelles of similar width but uniform and variable length were obtained when micelle fragments were subjected to seeded growth or self-seeding conditions. In primary alcohols (1-butanol to 1-decanol), direct self-assembly led to uniform scarf-like structures (total length similar to 2 mu m) in which the length of the central platelet increased with the carbon number in the solvent, offset by shorter fiber-like protrusions at the ends. We speculate that these changes are related to the temperature at which core crystallization occurred as the samples cooled. Selfassembly in decane was more complicated. Large (>10 mu m) aggregated structures consisting of fiber bundles formed initially. Sonication followed by seeded growth with additional BCP or self-seeding led to relatively uniform elongated lenticular micelles, substantially wider than those formed under these protocols for this BCP in 2-propanol. Solvent polarity has a profound effect on the self-assembly of this BCP with a brush-like amphiphilic corona-forming block.

Abstract:Block copolymers (BCPs) have attracted considerable attention due to their ability to form a variety of complex assemblies with diverse morphologies and functions in solution. By incorporating liquid crystalline (LC) moieties, the LC side chains significantly affect the morphologies and sizes of BCP assemblies. In this study, we synthesized the copolymer with an LC block containing triphenylene (HAT) discotic mesogen and short methylene side chains. By enhancing the π–π interaction between triphenylene discotic mesogens, and doping the discotic mesogens, the LC orderedness was significantly enhanced and able to dictate the self-assembly behaviors of the BCP in solution. Additionally, the lengths of resultant fibrillar micelles were easily tuned by adjusting the dopant content. More interestingly, two growth modes, nucleation growth and coupling, were observed during the formation of fibrils. Consequently, with long-term aging and sufficient concentration, a large portion of these fibrils underwent end-to-end coupling to form long fibrils, allowing the formation of organogel via inter-fibrillar entanglement.

Abstract:The inherent statistical heterogeneities associated with chain length, composition, and architecture of synthetic block copolymers compromise the quantitative interpretation of their self-assembly process. This study scrutinizes the contribution of molecular architecture on phase behaviors using discrete ABA triblock copolymers with precise chemical structure and uniform chain length. A group of discrete triblock copolymers with varying composition and symmetry were modularly synthesized through a combination of iterative growth methods and efficient coupling reactions. The symmetric ABA triblock copolymers self-assemble into long-range ordered structures with expanded domain spacings and enhanced phase stability, compared with the diblock counterparts snipped at the middle point. By tuning the relative chain length of two end blocks, the molecular asymmetry reduces the packing frustration, and thus increases the order-to-disorder transition temperature and enlarges the domain sizes. This study would serve as a quantitative model system to correlate the experimental observations with the theoretical assessments and to provide quantitative understandings for the relationship between molecular architecture and self-assembly.

Abstract:The self-assembled morphologies of amphiphilic ABC star triblock copolymers consisting of hydrophilic A blocks and hydrophobic B and C blocks and the blends with their counterpart linear AB diblock copolymers in solution are investigated by 2D real-space implementation of self-consistent field theory (SCFT) simulation. The star triblock copolymers self-assemble in solution to form various micellar structures from hamburger, to segmented wormlike, to toroidal segmented micelles, and finally to vesicles with simultaneously increasing hydrophobic lengths of blocks B and C. When the length of hydrophobic blocks B and C is asymmetric, specific bead-on-string worm micelles are found. Particularly, when the star ABC triblock copolymer is in a strong segregation regime and both B and C blocks are strongly hydrophobic, quite long segmented wormlike micelles are obtained, which had not been found in previously investigated diblock and linear ABC triblock copolymers solution. Additionally, raspberry micelles with beads dispersed on the core also occur in the strong segregation regime of bulk star ABC triblock copolymers. Furthermore, the aggregate morphology of ABC star triblock copolymers is strongly influenced by the addition of linear AB diblock copolymers. The most significant feature is that the long segmented worms will become shorter, to form hamburger micelles with the addition of AB diblock copolymers. These simulations are in good agreement with the experimental findings by Lodge's group.

Abstract:An interesting order-order transition between two different complex nanostructures was observed in a new liquid crystalline linear coil-coil-rod ABC triblock copolymer (triBCP). First, the ABC triBCP, poly(dimethylsiloxane)-bpolystyrene-b-poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PDMS-b-PS-b-PMPCS), was synthesized through sequential atom transfer radical polymerization. The degrees of polymerization of PDMS, PS, and PMPCS blocks are 58, 159, and 106, and the corresponding volume fractions of PDMS, PS, and PMPCS are 0.09, 0.29, and 0.62, respectively. The phase behaviors of the PDMS-b-PS diblock copolymer precursor and the final triblock copolymer were studied by smallangle X-ray scattering, one-dimensional wide-angle X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy experiments. The PDMS-b-PS precursor self-assembles into hexagonally packed cylinders with a relatively small periodic size after thermal annealing. When the triblock copolymer is annealed at a relatively low temperature (120 °C) at which the PMPCS block is in the amorphous state, the triBCP forms core-shell hexagonally packed cylinders (CSH) with a relativly large periodic size. After the triBCP is annealed above 140 °C at which the PMPCS block transforms to the liquid crystalline (LC) phase, the nanophase-separated structure transforms to a three-phase four-layer lamellar structure (LAM-3P4L). Thus, accompanied with the transition of the PMPCS blocks from the amorphous state to the LC phase, the order-order transition from CSH to LAM-3P4L occurs in the PDMS-b-PS-b-PMPCS ABC triBCP.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a new robust strategy to produce concentrated dispersions of block copolymer nano-objects. Insight into the dynamic process can promote the development of PISA by computer simulations. In this work, dissipative particle dynamics simulations (DPD) with a reaction model were employed to investigate the PISA behavior of ABC triblock copolymer. The polymerization of solvophobic B block was firstly performed using solvophilic macromolecular initiator A to fabricate AB copolymer. The continuous morphology transition from spherical micelle to wormlike micelle, to lamellae and finally to vesicle was observed during the process. Then, the polymerization of C block was further carried out and induced the different ABC triblock copolymer aggregates by tuning the interaction between C block and solvent (solvophobic or solvophilic).

Abstract:The solution self-assembly of amphiphilic polymers provides a versatile approach to design novel nanostructured materials. Multiblock polymers, particularly those composed of liquid crystalline and coil blocks, are of significant interest due to the potential display of nematic ordering in liquid crystalline domains, offering intriguing optical and mechanical properties. In this study, dissipative particle dynamics is used to investigate the solution self-assembly of rod-coil-rod copolymers in a coil-selective solvent. Extensive molecular simulations were conducted to elucidate the impact of polymer composition, concentration and flexibility on the self-assembly behavior. A quantitative analysis was performed to investigate how polymer conformations varied with changes in composition, concentration, and rigidity. Simulation results show that, at small rod compositions, rod-coil-rod polymers self-assemble into micelles at low concentrations, transitioning to network formation as concentration increases. An increase in rod composition leads to the formation of larger aggregates, resulting in cylindrical micelles and membranes. The results reported here also offer insights into the role of flexibility in shaping the self-assembly behavior of rod-coil-rod triblocks in selective solvents, thus, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the factors governing the formation of diverse structures in the solution self-assembly of triblock copolymers.

Abstract:Self-assembly of mixtures of amphiphilic AB diblock copolymers and solvophobic BC diblock copolymers in selective solvents was investigated by dissipative particle dynamics simulations. A series of aggregates such as multicompartment micelles were observed. Density profiles of the aggregates were plotted to gain insight into the details of the aggregates. It was found that the BC block copolymers mainly occupy the cores of the aggregates to increase the hierarchy of the structures. Effects of copolymer concentration and block length on the aggregates were studied. As the concentration of BC diblock copolymers increases, a morphological transformation from vesicles to cylindrical micelles and then to spherical multicompartment micelles occurs. At high concentration of BC diblock copolymers, the number of concentric layers within spherical micelles was found to be significantly dependent on the concentration of BC copolymers. By tuning the block length of C block length, both the concentric and nonconcentric multicompartment micelles were found. In addition to the morphological studies, the dynamic process was further analyzed with Minkowski functionals. The results show that the formation of multicompartment micelles is a hierarchical process of self-assembly. During the self-assembly, the large-length-scale structures are first formed, and then the small-length-scale structures within the cores gradually appears. The present simulation results could provide in-depth information about the mechanism behind the formation of multicompartment micelles from mixtures of amphiphilic and solvophobic copolymers, and also could provide guide for preparation of controllable structures for advanced functional nano-devices.
Thermoinduced Crystallization-Driven Self-Assembly of Bioinspired Block Copolymers in Aqueous Solution.

Abstract:Delicate control over architectures via crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) in aqueous solution, particularly combined with external stimuli, is rare and challenging. Here, we report a stepwise CDSA process thermally initiated from amphiphilic poly(N-allylglycine)-b-poly(N-octylglycine) (PNAG-b-PNOG) conjugated with thiol-terminated triethylene glycol monomethyl ethers ((PNAG-g-EG(3))-b-PNOG) in aqueous solution. The diblock copolymers show a reversible thermoresponsive behavior with nearly identical doud points in both heating and cooling runs. In contrast, the morphology transition of the assemblies is irreversible upon a heating- cooling cycle because of the presence of a confined domain arising from crystalline PNOG, which allows for the achievement of different nanostructured assemblies by the same polymer. We demonstrated that the thermoresponsive property of PNAG-g-EG(3) initiates assembly kinetically that is subsequently promoted by crystallization of PNOG thermodynamically. The irreversible morphology transition behavior provides a convenient platform for comparing the cellular uptake efficiency of nanostructured assemblies with various morphologies that are otherwise similar.

Abstract:Self-assembly of ABC star triblock copolymers confined in cylindrical nanopores is studied using real-space self-consistent mean-field theory. Specifically, the investigation focuses on the confined self-assembly of a triblock copolymer which forms hierarchical lamellae in the bulk. Generically, the hierarchical lamellae can be parallel or perpendicular to the pore surfaces. Concentric rings of A and B/C lamellae are formed in the parallel case. The B/C layers further form B/C domains. The number of B/C domains is controlled by the pore size. In the perpendicular case, the B/C layers are arranged alternatively along the pore axis. The stability of these observed structures is analyzed.

Abstract:Lamellar and hexagonal-coil-cylinder self-assembled structures of ABA type triblock copolymers containing mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) as the rod block, and polyisobutylene (PIB) as the coil middle block were discovered. PIB was synthesized by living cationic polymerization of isobutylene initiated by 1,4-bis(2-chloro-2-propyl) benzene (p-DCC), and then a small amount of styrene was introduced at the end of the PIB chains to form the difunctional PIB macroinitiator with -CH2CH(C6H5)Cl end groups for further atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 2,5-Bis[(4-methoxyphenyl) oxycarbonyl] styrene (MPCS) was block-copolymerized from the difunctional PIB macroinitiators at 110 degrees C. The molecular characterization of the triblock copolymers was performed with H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their phase structures and transitions were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and polarized optical microscopy experiments. It was demonstrated that the triblock copolymers formed lamellar structures at moderate rod fractions and hexagonal coil cylinders in the rod matrix at high rod fractions. The d-spacing of the microphase-separated structures was influenced by the liquid crystalline phase of rod-like PMPCS blocks.
Polystyrene-block-polyethylene-block-polystyrene triblock copolymers: Synthesis and crystallization-driven self-assembly behavior

Abstract:In this work, we reported the synthesis of a series of novel semicrystalline ABA triblock copolymers with polyethylene midblock and polystyrene endblocks via the combination of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), hydrogenation and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. First, an α,ω-dihydroxyl-terminated polycyclooctadiene (PCOD) was synthesized via the ROMP of cyclooctadiene by the use of the Grubbs second generation catalyst and with cis-2-butene-1,4-diol as the chain transfer agent. The α,ω-dihydroxyl-terminated PCOD was then hydrogenated into an α,ω-dihydroxyl-terminated polyethylene (PE); the latter was allowed to react with 2-methyl-2-[(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl) sulfanyl]propanoic acid to afford a macromolecular chain transfer agent (i.e., Macro-CTA) for the RAFT polymerization of styrene. By controlling the lengths of PS endblocks, a series of polystyrene-block-polyethylene-block-polystyrene (PS-b-PE-b-PS) triblock copolymers were obtained. The successful synthesis of the ABA triblock copolymers were demonstrated by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) indicate that the PS-b-PE-b-PS triblock copolymers were microphase-separated in bulks and their morphologies were quite dependent on the mass ratios of PE to PS blocks. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) showed that the triblock copolymers displayed crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) behavior in selective solvent (viz. 1,4-dioxane). Depending on the lengths of PS blocks, the CDSA behavior of all the triblock copolymers generated spherical and cylindrical micelles. It was found that the quantity of the cylindrical micelles increased with decreasing the lengths of PS blocks.

Abstract:Bottom-up block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly involving crystallization of the core-forming block can lead, via a multistep protocol, to a range of uniform structures. One normally works with polymers of narrow molecular weight distribution, at low concentrations, and several steps are necessary because one has to separate the nucleation and growth steps. Here, we show that BCPs with polydisperse corona chains enable one to obtain a broad range of uniform structures in a single pot via a single heating-cooling-aging process, in which the nature of the structures is determined by the solvents and the annealing temperature. Most of the sample dissolves upon heating, but a fraction of the components in the mixture with the smallest corona/core block ratio persists as crystallites and, upon cooling, nucleates the growth of the more soluble components. Remarkably, this one-pot self-assembly can be scaled up to a concentration of 12% w/w, opening the door to useful applications.
