In order to satisfy higher sensitivity sensing, the pair of non-thermally coupled energy levels (NTCLs) of 4S3/2 and 3H4 has been innovatively designed. Herein, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm co-doped LuScO3 single crystal fibers (SCFs) had been delicately grown by Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) method. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry was realized based on the Er3+:4S3/2→4I15/2 (545~593nm) and Tm3+:3H4→3H6 (750~850nm) NTCLs. Such an obvious FIR-temperature change through the NTCLs presents an outstanding optical thermometric performance, yielding the high temperature sensing with wide range. The maximum value of absolute sensitivity was 2 orders of magnitude higher than the temperature measurement using TCLs. More importantly, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm:LuScO3 SCFs exhibit superior thermal stability that will be helpful to obtain high precision temperature measurement. Hence, our findings might offer some useful inspiration for exploring high-sensitivity luminescent thermometers and enriching the research of temperature measuring materials.

Ca2Na2La6(SiO4)4(PO4)2O: Eu2+/Eu3+: A Visual Dual‐emitting Fluorescent Ratiometric Temperature Sensor

Abstract:A novel apatite-based UV-excited dual-emitting Ca2Na2La6(SiO4)(4)(PO4)(2)O: Eu2+/Eu3+ phosphor (CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+) was designed and successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Compared with previous reports on this family of materials, a structural study based on DFT calculation exhibited a new consequence that the monovalent ions in this system are more inclined to occupy the seven-coordinate cationic sites rather than the nine-coordinate sites. This result was confirmed by the structural refinement and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) data. Due to the coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ dopants in the material, under 345 or 392nm excitation, CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ exhibited a green Eu2+ emission band (528nm) and red Eu3+ emission peaks (around 618nm). The application potential of CNL:0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ in luminescent thermometry was studied by exploiting the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity ratio (green/red) at different temperatures. It was found that, under 345nm excitation, the fluorescent intensity ratio of CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ displayed linear correlation over the temperature range of 298 to 473K with a high sensitivity of 2.82%K-1. Additionally, the emission color of the CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ sample under UV lamp (254 and 365nm) excitation showed an obvious change (from green to red) as the temperature increased from 298 to 473K (from green to red). These results indicated that CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+ can serve as an excellent visual luminescent ratiometric thermometer. Furthermore, this work provides a novel reference for developing high-performance luminescence temperature-sensing materials.

Abstract:Design and fabrication of contactless optical thermometer with rapid and accurate performance has become a research hotspot in recent years. Herein, CaSc2O4: Yb3+/Er3+ is employed as the intermediary for temperature sensing under the excitation of 980 nm, which is proven to afford an ultra‐sensitive and high‐resolution optical thermometry in multiple ways based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technology. The optimal thermal sensing behaviors are realized by the FIR of Er3+: 2H11/2 → 4I15/2 to 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transition, which has a relative sensitivity of 1184/T2 and a minimal resolution of 0.03 K along with a maximal absolute error of 0.96 K. Besides that, the FIR between the thermally coupled Stark sublevels of Er3+: 4F9/2 manifold (FIRR) as well as that of Er3+: 4I13/2 manifold (FIRN) can also provide excellent optical thermometry. The relative sensitivity of FIRR‐based and FIRN‐based optical thermometers are calculated to be 402/T2 and 366/T2 respectively with a same minimal resolution of 0.09 K, which possess the potential to be used for biomedicine due to the inherent advantage of their operating wavelengths located in the biological window. The results demonstrate that CaSc2O4: Yb3+/Er3+ is a promising candidate for temperature sensing with multipath, high sensitivity and superior resolution.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for non-contact fluorescence intensity ratio-based optical thermometry, novel phosphor materials with high-efficiency, dual-emitting centers, and differentiable temperature sensitivity are highly desired. In this work, rare earth Eu2+ ions were incorporated into CsCu2I3 microcrystals by solid–state reaction. Under a single UV excitation, the as-synthesized samples exhibit two emissions: 452 nm blue emission from the 5d→4f transition of Eu2+ and 582 nm yellow emission from self-trapped exciton emission of CsCu2I3. The photoluminescence quantum yield reaches to 50%. The dual-band emission of Eu2+-doped CsCu2I3 shows different temperature responses in the range of 260–360 K. Based on fluorescence intensity ratio technology, the maximum absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity are 0.091 K–1 (at 360 K) and 2.60%/K (at 260 K), respectively. These results suggest that Eu2+-doped CsCu2I3 could be a good candidate for highly sensitive optical thermometer.

Abstract:The improvement of temperature sensing performance for optical thermometers based on thermally coupled energy levels of a certain rare earth ion is constrained by the intrinsic operating principle. Here, a novel strategy has been presented for further improving the sensitivity by employing the cooperation of Eu3+ and Nd3+ in Y2O3 nanoparticles. Drastic temperature dependence of the fluorescence intensity ratio between Eu3+ and Nd3+ is achieved in the range from 300 to 510 K. It is demonstrated that such dependence is attributed to the nephelauxetic effect of Eu3+ and each thermally coupled property of Eu3+ and Nd3+ as well as the energy transfer process from Eu3+ to Nd3+. We conclude that such strategy and the investigated nanoparticles have great potential for optical thermometry with high sensing performance. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Non-stoichiometry in Ca2Al2SiO7 enabling mixed-valent europium toward ratiometric temperature sensing

Abstract:Eu2+/Eu3+ mixed-valence couple co-doped material holds great potential for ratiometric temperature sensing owing to its different electronic configurations and electron-lattice interaction. Here, the correlation of nonstoichiometry in chemical composition, phase structures and luminescence propertis of Ca2Al2Si1−xO7:Eu is discussed, and controlled Eu2+/Eu3+ valence and tunable emission appear with decreasing Si content. It is found that the 2Ca2+ + Si4+ ↔ Eu2+ + Eu3+ + Al3+ cosubstitution accounts for the structural stability and charge balance mechanism. Benefiting from the diverse thermal dependent emission behaviors of Eu2+ and Eu3+, Ca2Al2Si1−xO7:Eu thermometer exhibits excellent temperature sensing performances with the maximum absolute and relative sensitivity being 0.024 K−1 (at 303 K) and 2.46% K−1 (at 443 K) and good signal discriminability. We propose that the emission quenching of Eu2+ is ascribed to 5d electrons depopulation through Eu2+/Eu3+ intervalence charge transfer state, while the quenching of Eu3+ comes from multi phonon relaxation. Our work demonstrates the potential of Ca2Al2Si1−xO7:Eu for noncontact optical thermometry, and also highlights mixed valence europium containing com pounds toward temperature sensing.

Abstract:Fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometers have obtained great attention in industrial production, medical diagnosis and scientific research. However, the sensitivity has a large decline at high temperatures, which seriously limits the practical applications. Here, the Yb,Er,Tm:Sc2O3 single crystal fibers were grown by laser-heated pedestal growth (LHPG) technique and its multi-mode FIR thermometry based on thermal coupled energy levels (TCLs) and non-thermal coupled energy levels (NTCLs) has been well demonstrated. The temperature measuring range of Yb,Er,Tm:Sc2O3 single crystal fibers covers 298-973 K, with an increase of 2 orders of magnitude in absolute sensitivity. The relative sensitivity is higher than 0.02 % K-1 in the whole T-range of 298 similar to 973 K, with a maximum value of 1.02 % K-1. Especially at the high temperatures of 973 K, it can still maintain 0.31 % K-1. This work proposes an innovative fluorescence intensity ratio detection strategy to achieve complementary disadvantages between TCLs and NTCLs and provides an effective method for improving detection sensitivity.
A New Mechanism for Temperature Sensing Based on the Thermal Population of 7 F 2 State in Eu 3+

Abstract:The thermal coupling property of the ground state F-7(0) and its adjacent thermally-excited state 7F2 of Eu3' ion was firstly discussed and a new temperature sensing mechanism was proposed based on the thermal population of F-7(2) state in Y2O3 : 5% Eu3+ powder sample. Under a constant 611.2 nm excitation, the fluorescence originating from 5D0 state increases monotonously as the temperature rises in the region from 150 K to 300 K. The reason leading to this temperature-dependent fluorescence behavior was analyzed in detail. It is demonstrated that this present work provides a new mechanism for non-contact optical thermometry. Abstract:Optical thermometry has emerged as a promising technology to overcome the limitations of traditional thermometry techniques. Herein, we report an Eu 3+ -activated tungstate Ba 2 CaWO 6 phosphors for luminescent thermometry with a maximum relative sensitivity of 4.84% based on a single-band ratiometric technique. By monitoring the 5 D 0 → 7 F 1 (595 nm) emission of Eu 3+ , excitation spectrum of the as-prepared sample was measured, showing a dominant broad band ranging from 240 to 345 nm corresponding to the O 2− -W 6+ charge transfer band (CTB). The intensity of CTB gradually decreases and the CTB edge shows an appreciable red shift when the temperature increases due to thermal population of the [WO 6 ] 6− moiety at higher vibrational levels. The opposite temperature dependences of the two specific excitations, one at the peak of CTB and the other from the edge of CTB, were employed to design a luminescence intensity ratio thermometry scheme in the tungstate. When compared to other related schemes, our scheme showed a higher relative sensitivity.

Abstract:Currently,lanthanide ions doped luminescence materials applying as optical thermometers have arose much concern. Basing on the different responses of two emissions to temperature, the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique can be executed and further estimate the sensitivities to assess the optical thermometry performances. In this study, we introduce different doping concentrations of Eu$^{3+}$ ions into negative expansion material Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$, accessing to the thermal enhanced luminescence from 373 to 548 K, and investigate the temperature sensing properties in detail. All samples exhibit good thermally enhanced luminescence behavior. The emission intensity of Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$: 6 mol% Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors reaches at 147.81% of initial intensity at 473 K. As the Eu doping concentration increases, the resistance of the samples to thermal quenching decreases. The FIR technique based on the transitions 5D0-7F1 (592 nm) and 5D0-7F2 (613 nm) of Eu$^{3+}$ ions demonstrate a maximum relative temperature sensitivity of 3.063% K-1 at 298 K for Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$: 6 mol% Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors. The sensitivity of sample decreases with the increase of Eu$^{3+}$ concentration. Benefiting from the thermal enhanced luminescence performance and good temperature sensing properties, the Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$: Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors can be applies as optical thermometers.
Optical thermometry and multi-mode anti-counterfeiting based on Bi3+/Ln3+ and Ln3+ doped Ca2ScSbO6 phosphors

Abstract:A series of novel Bi3+/Ln3+-activated Ca2ScSbO6 (CSSO) phosphors were synthesized by solid-state method and their luminescent behaviors were investigated in detail. Under the 302 nm excitation, the CSSO:Bi3+ shows remarkable near-ultraviolet photoluminescence with a peak emission at 365 nm. Eu3+-activated CSSO phosphor possesses high efficiency and no obvious reduction of emission intensity even after replacing Sc with Eu completely, which indicates a low-concentration quenching effect. In addition, its emission intensity at 423 K (I423K) still maintains 88 % compared with that of at room temperature (I298K), indicating good thermostability. In contrast, the CSSO:Bi3+ phosphor exhibits a significant reduction in emission intensity, maintaining only 49 % of its luminescence at 423 K (I423K/I298K). By codoping Bi3+ and Ln3+ (Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Sm), the energy transfer was observed from the Bi3+ to Ln3+ ions, endowing the CSSO:Bi3+, Ln3+ phosphors with tunable multicolor emissions. Leveraging the differing thermostabilities of the emission spectra for Bi3+ and Ln3+ ions, we designed and assessed a range of sensitive optical thermometers. Among these, the CSSO:Bi3+, Eu3+ phosphors exhibited the best performance, boasting maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of 9.96 % K−1 and 2.002 % K−1, respectively. Additionally, we displayed the multi-mode anti-counterfeiting function of synthesized phosphors, and a multi-color switching system was designed with the advantages of direct visualization and easy identification of encrypted information. These results indicate that Bi3+ and Ln3+ coactivated CSSO phosphor has the potential application for non-contact temperature measurement and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Optical temperature sensors based on photoluminescence materials have received considerable attention because of their noncontact measurement. However, such sensors still suffer from low sensitivity. Herein, A rationmetric optical temperature sensor with high sensitivity based on the spectra of Ca2LaSbO6: Mn4+, Eu3+ (CLS: Mn4+, Eu3+) phosphors was constructed. The temperature-dependent spectra were studied ranging from 273 to 473 K. Results showed that the fluorescence intensity of Mn4+ ions attenuated faster than that of Eu3+ ions with the increase of temperature because of their different thermal responses. Moreover, the sensing properties of CLS: Mn4+, Eu3+ showed absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity of 0.098 K−1 and 2.60% K−1, respectively, based on the fluorescence intensity ratio of Mn4+ and Eu3+. Therefore, CLS: Mn4+, Eu3+ phosphor can be used for optical thermometry with high performance.

Abstract:Single-phase Ce3+, Eu2+ co-doped LiSr4(BO3)3 phosphors are successfully prepared via solid reaction process. The crystal structure, luminescence characteristics and thermal quenching performance of LiSr4(BO3)3:Ce3+, Eu2+ samples are systematically studied. The presence of two crystallographic positions of Sr2+ ions in LiSr4(BO3)3 host makes the emission bands of Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion exhibit asymmetry. Based on the configuration coordinate model, the thermal quenching of luminescence from Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion is investigated in detail. The temperature-sensitive performance is further studied by analyzing the temperature-dependent luminescence spectra of LiSr4(BO3)3:0.06Ce3+, 0.04Eu2+ phosphor. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities are 0.057 K-1 and 4.017% K−1, respectively, which are better than many previously reported inorganic optical thermometry materials. Besides, the emissions of Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion are clearly separated, providing good signal discrimination ability. The results demonstrate that LiSr4(BO3)3:Ce3+, Eu2+ phosphors have outstanding temperature-sensitive properties and can be the excellent optical thermometric materials.

In this work, Bi3+ and Eu3+ co-doped Ca2LaTaO6 (CLTO) phosphors were synthesized by a solid phase method. The crystal structures of the cations in various coordination environments were confirmed by means of XRD, XPS, and DRS. Using SEM and TEM techniques, the morphology of the samples was investigated in detail. Furthermore, the occupancy of the two luminescent centers of Bi3+ was analyzed in detail based on the luminescence properties of the CLTO:Bi3+ phosphor. Additionally, dipole–dipole interaction contributes to the energy transfer from Bi3+ to Eu3+ ions in the CLTO host, and the transfer efficiency is as high as 100%. Finally, given the different responses of Bi3+ and Eu3+ to temperature, a dual-mode optical thermometer was designed. Based on FIR technology, the maximum S a and S r values are 0.041 K-1 and 0.76% K−1, respectively. Also, the maximum value of S r of the Bi3+ temperature-dependent lifetime is 1.04%K−1 at 293 K. These results indicate that the designed dual-mode optical thermometers of CLTO:Bi3+,Eu3+ have great potential in temperature measurement.

Abstract:To date, non-contact luminescence thermometry methods based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technology have been studied extensively. However, designing phosphors with high relative sensitivity (Sr) has become a research hotspot. In this work, Eu3+ single-doped Ca2Sb2O7:Eu3+ phosphors with a high Sr value for dual-emitting-center luminescence thermometry are developed and proposed. The anti-thermal quenching behavior of Eu3+ originating from the energy transfer (ET) of host → Eu3+ is found and proved in the designed phosphors. Interestingly, adjustable color emission from blue to orange can be achieved. Surprisingly, the degree of the anti-thermal quenching behavior of Eu3+ gradually reduces from 240 to 127% as the Eu3+ doping content increases from 0.005 to 0.05 mol, attributed to most Eu3+ being located in the low symmetrical [Ca1O8] dodecahedral site. According to the differentiable responses of the host and Eu3+ to temperature, the maximal Sr value reaches 3.369% K-1 (383 K). Moreover, the ambient temperature can be intuitively predicted by observing the emitting color. Owing to the excellent performance in optical thermometry, color-tunable properties, and outstanding acid and alkali resistance for polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films, the developed Eu3+ single-doped Ca2Sb2O7:Eu3+ phosphors are expected to be prospective candidates in luminescence thermometers and LED devices in various conditions.

Abstract:The thermal-coupled levels (TCLs) of lanthanides have attracted great attention in the field of optical thermometer, offering an efficient method to achieve non-contect temperatuer feedback in complex environment. However, the iner 4f electrons are shielded, which becomes the core obstacle in improving the sensing performance. This issue is now circumvented by constructing an electron transfer pathway between Tm3+(1D2) and Eu3+(5D0) configurations. As a result, the electron transfer barrier is related to the relative temperature sensitivity, giving an insight into the modulation mechanism. Compared to the conventional TCLs systems, the relative temperature sensitivity of this strategy is highly concentration-responsive, increasing from 5.56 to 10.1 % K-1 as the Eu3+ molar concentration rises from 0.3 to 0.5 mol%. This work reveals the inner emission mechanism based on IVCT-supported emission mode, and presents the highly adjustability of sensing performance.
Dual-mode optical thermometry and multilevel anti-counterfeiting based on Er3+/Eu3+ doped Ba5Gd8Zn4O21 phosphors

Abstract:Designing and manufacturing novel anti-counterfeiting materials with multilevel, strong readability and inexpensive is a crucial challenge. Herein, a batch of Ba5Gd8(1-x-y)Zn4O21:xEu3+/yEr3+ phosphors with long persistent and multicolor luminescence were synthesized. Their structure and luminescence properties were studied through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, lifetime decay curves, emission, excitation, thermoluminescence and diffuse reflection spectra. Under different wavelengths irradiation, Ba5Gd8Zn4O21:Eu3+, Ba5Gd8Zn4O21:Er3+ and Ba5Gd8Zn4O21:Eu3+, Er3+ emit strong red, green and multicolor (green, yellow, red) luminescence, respectively. Importantly, Ba5Gd8Zn4O21:Eu3+ and Ba5Gd8Zn4O21:Eu3+, Er3+ phosphors exhibit long-lasting luminescence after 254 nm and X-ray radiation. Combine long afterglow and multicolor emissions under X-ray, UV and 980 nm laser excitation, these materials successfully achieve multilevel anti-counterfeiting. In terms of optical temperature measurement, the maximum relative sensitivity of Ba5Gd7.44Zn4O21:0.07Er3+ based on thermal coupling levels (2H11/2/4S3/2) and non-thermal coupling levels (4F9/2/2H11/2) of Er3+ are 1.29 % K−1 and 0.34 % K−1, respectively. Both two modes exhibit superior repeatability (98 %) in 333–573 K temperature range which can realize self-calibration temperature sensing. All findings reveal great potential of these phosphors for multilevel anti-counterfeiting and efficient optical temperature sensing.
