Abstract:A novel apatite-based UV-excited dual-emitting Ca2Na2La6(SiO4)(4)(PO4)(2)O: Eu2+/Eu3+ phosphor (CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+) was designed and successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Compared with previous reports on this family of materials, a structural study based on DFT calculation exhibited a new consequence that the monovalent ions in this system are more inclined to occupy the seven-coordinate cationic sites rather than the nine-coordinate sites. This result was confirmed by the structural refinement and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) data. Due to the coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ dopants in the material, under 345 or 392nm excitation, CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ exhibited a green Eu2+ emission band (528nm) and red Eu3+ emission peaks (around 618nm). The application potential of CNL:0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ in luminescent thermometry was studied by exploiting the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity ratio (green/red) at different temperatures. It was found that, under 345nm excitation, the fluorescent intensity ratio of CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ displayed linear correlation over the temperature range of 298 to 473K with a high sensitivity of 2.82%K-1. Additionally, the emission color of the CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ sample under UV lamp (254 and 365nm) excitation showed an obvious change (from green to red) as the temperature increased from 298 to 473K (from green to red). These results indicated that CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+ can serve as an excellent visual luminescent ratiometric thermometer. Furthermore, this work provides a novel reference for developing high-performance luminescence temperature-sensing materials.

Abstract:Sr2CeO4:Eu3+ phosphors containing various activator contents have been systemically investigated by temperature-dependent fluorescent method. The temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra and the integrated emission intensity of Sr2CeO4:Eu3+ at different temperatures indicate that these samples can exhibit distinct low-temperature sensing characteristics. The sensitive intensity/temperature responses of these materials, depending on tuning of the concentration of Eu3+, provide a sound foundation for their potential application in single-color or two-color fluorescence thermometry techniques.

Abstract:Currently, with increasing demand for non-contact fluorescence intensity ratio-based optical thermometry, a novel phosphor with high-efficiency, dual-emitting centers, and differentiable temperature sensitivity is more and more urgent to develop. In this work, an efficient dual-emitting center optical thermometry with high sensitivity and multicolor tunable in Ca2Sb2O7:Bi3+, Eu3+ phosphor is firstly designed and successfully prepared. Under 330 nm excitation, the fabricated phosphor presents the featured and distinguishable emissions of Bi3+ and Eu3+ ions. The high efficiency energy transfer from Bi3+ to Eu3+ ions is proved and its corresponding mechanism belongs to dipole-dipole interaction. By modulating the ratio of Bi3+/Eu3+, the multicolor changes from blue to pink are realized. Based on the discriminative thermal quenching behavior between Bi3+ and Eu3+, the fluorescence intensity ratio of Eu3+ to Bi3+ in Ca2Sb2O7 samples illustrates excellent optical thermometry performance from 298 to 523 K. The maximum absolute sensitivity (S a ) and relative sensitivity (S r ) reach as high as 0.2773 K−1 at 523 K and 2.37% K−1 at 448 K, respectively. Notably, the discriminated surrounding temperature can be directly confirmed by observing the emitting color from purple to orange-red with the temperature increase from 298 to 523 K. Furthermore, the as-prepared phosphor materials also demonstrate outstanding repeatability and excellent reversibility. These results exhibit that the designed Ca2Sb2O7:Bi3+, Eu3+ phosphors have great promising applications in the field of non-contact optical temperature thermometry and thermochromic.

Ratiometric optical thermometer with high-sensitive temperature sensing based on synergetic luminescence of Ce3+-Eu2+ in LiSr4(BO3)3 phosphors

Abstract:Single-phase Ce3+, Eu2+ co-doped LiSr4(BO3)3 phosphors are successfully prepared via solid reaction process. The crystal structure, luminescence characteristics and thermal quenching performance of LiSr4(BO3)3:Ce3+, Eu2+ samples are systematically studied. The presence of two crystallographic positions of Sr2+ ions in LiSr4(BO3)3 host makes the emission bands of Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion exhibit asymmetry. Based on the configuration coordinate model, the thermal quenching of luminescence from Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion is investigated in detail. The temperature-sensitive performance is further studied by analyzing the temperature-dependent luminescence spectra of LiSr4(BO3)3:0.06Ce3+, 0.04Eu2+ phosphor. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities are 0.057 K-1 and 4.017% K−1, respectively, which are better than many previously reported inorganic optical thermometry materials. Besides, the emissions of Ce3+ ion and Eu2+ ion are clearly separated, providing good signal discrimination ability. The results demonstrate that LiSr4(BO3)3:Ce3+, Eu2+ phosphors have outstanding temperature-sensitive properties and can be the excellent optical thermometric materials.

Abstract:To develop new luminescent materials for optical thermometers, a series of Er 3+ /Eu 3+ doped double perovskite La 2 MgSnO 6 phosphors are synthesized by a high-temperature solid-phase method. The structure, luminescence performance, energy transfer, and thermal sensitivity are systematically studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy fluorescence spectroscopy, lifetime decay curve, and temperature-dependent emission spectra. The prepared samples possess good coincidence with pure perovskite phase, and the refined high-quality XRD data reveal that Eu 3+ and Er 3+ jointly occupy La 3+ sites. which is attributed to the effective energy transfer from Er 3+ to Eu 3+ ions. By adjusting the doping concentration of Eu 3+ , the emission of Er 3+ is attenuated and the luminous color is modulated from green to orange-red. These demonstrate the existence of energy transfer between Er 3+ and Eu 3+ . In addition, the optimized La 2 MgSnO 6 : 0.075Er 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ phosphor exhibits excellent thermal stability and good temperature cycling. The emission intensity showed good cycling in the process of repeated heating and cooling, and maintained to 76% of the initial temperature (303K) at 403K. Studied the optical temperature sensing performance of LMS: 0.075Er 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ fluorescent powder. The results of fitting the fluorescence intensity ratio with the non-thermal coupling characteristic peaks of 555 and 706nm showed excellent optical sensitivity, and the S a and S r were calculated as 0.0029K −1 and 1.21%K −1 , respectively. All results indicate that LMS: 0.075Er 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ phosphors could have potential applications for non-contact optical temperature measurement materials.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for non-contact fluorescence intensity ratio-based optical thermometry, novel phosphor materials with high-efficiency, dual-emitting centers, and differentiable temperature sensitivity are highly desired. In this work, rare earth Eu2+ ions were incorporated into CsCu2I3 microcrystals by solid–state reaction. Under a single UV excitation, the as-synthesized samples exhibit two emissions: 452 nm blue emission from the 5d→4f transition of Eu2+ and 582 nm yellow emission from self-trapped exciton emission of CsCu2I3. The photoluminescence quantum yield reaches to 50%. The dual-band emission of Eu2+-doped CsCu2I3 shows different temperature responses in the range of 260–360 K. Based on fluorescence intensity ratio technology, the maximum absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity are 0.091 K–1 (at 360 K) and 2.60%/K (at 260 K), respectively. These results suggest that Eu2+-doped CsCu2I3 could be a good candidate for highly sensitive optical thermometer.

Abstract:A series of CaSrSiO4:xDy3+,yEu3+ white phosphors were successfully synthesized by high-temperature solid-phase reaction technique. The physical phase, optical performance, energy transfer mechanism and thermal stability of the samples were studied. It has been shown that the concentration quenching point of CaSrSiO4:xDy3+ phosphors is x = 0.05 at the excitation of 365 nm. In CaSrSiO4:0.05Dy3+,yEu3+ phosphors, the emission intensity of Dy3+ gradually decreases with the increase of Eu3+ doping concentration. While the emission intensity of Eu3+ first increases and then decreases, the concentration quenching point of Eu3+ is y = 0.08. The analysis of the lifetime decay curves demonstrates the existence of an energy transfer process from Dy3+ to Eu3+ in CaSrSiO4:Dy3+,Eu3+ phosphors. The energy transfer from Dy3+ to Eu3+ is dominated by dipole-dipole interactions, with the highest energy transfer efficiency of 63.1 %. By adjusting the doping concentration of Eu3+, the doping of Eu3+ not only effectively improves the stability of phosphor, but also enables tunable color temperature from cold white light to neutral white light, which is a potentially promising white light emitting material.

Abstract:Luminescence thermometry has been widely concerned by researchers due to its quick response, high spatial resolution, and remote measurement. However, low sensitivity is still an existing problem and affects its development. Herein, the luminescence thermometer with high sensitivity taking advantage of the distinguished thermal response between Eu3+ and Mn4+ is designed. Excitedly, Eu3+ exhibits an anti-thermal quenching behavior under 310 nm excitation and a slight thermal quenching behavior under 393 nm excitation due to the energy transfer of host→Eu3+, while Mn4+ presents a strong thermal quenching behavior. Moreover, the energy transfer of Eu3+→Mn4+ (λex = 310 nm and λex = 393 nm) can also be observed for the Ca2Sb2O7: Eu3+, Mn4+ phosphors during the heating process. On the basis of the diverse thermal quenching behavior of Eu3+ and Mn4+, the thermometric performances are investigated by utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of Eu3+(5D0→7F2)/Mn4+(2Eg→4A2g) under a dual-wavelength excitation. The maximum relative sensitivities of the designed phosphors are determined to be 4.072% K−1 at 305 K under 310 nm and 3.072% K−1 at 351 K under 393 nm excitation. It's worth noting that the thermometric characteristic can be modified by various excitation wavelengths. Hence, the developed Ca2Sb2O7: Eu3+, Mn4+ phosphors have great potential in the field of luminescence thermometry and provide an effective strategy for designing high-sensitivity dual-wavelength excitation optical thermometers.

Abstract:Novel orange-red Sr2GdSbO6: Eu3+( x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) phosphors were successfully prepared by the traditional high-temperature solid-state method. The results of Rietveld re finement, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) spectrum and elemental mapping demonstrate that Eu3+ successfully replaces the Gd3+ sites and distributes uniformly in the particles of phosphors. The luminescence properties of Sr2GdSbO6 :Eu3+ phosphors were investigated in detail. The emission spectra of the strongest emission peak is the D-5(0) -> F- 7(1) (593 nm) transition, which can emit orange-red light under 393 nm excitation. When the doping concentration of Eu3+ ions is x = 0.2, the luminescence intensity of the phosphors reaches the highest. The detailed mechanism of concentration quenching is attributed to dipole-dipole interaction. The thermal stability values of Sr2GdSbO6 :0.2Eu(3+) phosphors are 87%, 82% and 114% under 393, 467 and 527 nm excitations, respectively. The causes of the abnormal thermal quenching under 527 nm excitation were analyzed. Based on the abnormal thermal quenching under 527 nm excitation, the optical thermometry properties of Sr2GdSbO6 :0.2Eu(3+) phosphors were investigated by fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique, and appreciable relative sensitivity was obtained. Abstract:The challenge of building a highly reliable contactless temperature probe with high sensitivity, good temperature-induced color discriminability, and economical synthesis has prompted the research community to work in the field of rare-earth-based luminescence thermometry. Moreover, the fast-growing market for optoelectronic devices has increased the demand for tunable color-emitting phosphors. In this study, Dy3+/Eu3+co-doped SrMoO4phosphors were developed as tunable color-emitting source and dual-mode luminescence thermometer. A facile and cost-effective auto-combustion method was used to synthesize the phosphors. Our work demonstrates a viable scheme for tailoring the emission of single-phase phosphors by precisely controlling the dopant concentrations and by modulating excitation wavelength. The overall emission is tuned from greenish-yellow to white and greenish-yellow to reddish-orange. A detailed energy transfer process from the host to the Ln3+ions and between the Ln3+ions is discussed. Further, anti-thermal quenching in the emission of Dy3+ion is observed when excited with 297 nm. The dual-mode luminescence thermometry has been studied by analyzing the fluorescence intensity ratio of Dy3+and Eu3+ions upon excitation at 297 nm. The maximum relative sensitivity value for 4% Eu3+co-doped SrMoO4:4%Dy3+phosphor is 1.46% K-1at 300 K. Furthermore, the configurational coordinate diagram is presented to elucidate the nature of temperature-dependent emission. Therefore, our research opens up new avenues for the development of color-tunable luminescent materials for various optoelectronic and temperature-sensing applications.

Multiple site occupancy occurred in KSr6Sc(SiO4)4:Eu2+ and induced a yellow-orange emission band with a peak at 571 nm and an FWHM of 91 nm. Gaussian fitting and time-resolved photoluminescence mapping were combined to analyze the occupation of Eu2+ in five Sr2+ sites. In the meantime, the site occupation preference, energy transfer process, and thermal quenching mechanism of Eu2+ emission centers have been comprehensively examined. Under 450 nm excitation, the optimal sample possesses an acceptable quantum efficiency (EQE = 17.3%) and a high sensitivity between luminescence properties and temperature variation ranging from 200 to 475 K. The optimal sample's relative sensor sensitivity achieves a maximum value of 3.53% K-1 at 475 K. The phosphor KSr6Sc(SiO4)4:0.07Eu2+ presents the potentiality as an optical thermometer.

Abstract:Recent developments of luminescence ratiometric thermometry have attracted much attention owing to its merits of fast response, non-invasiveness and high spatial resolution. In this work, the synthesis, crystal structure and luminescence properties has been carried out for Pr3+-activated SrMoO4 phosphors as optical thermometry. The XRD results show that all the phosphors possess the scheelite type tetragonal structure with space group I4(1)/a. The efficient luminescence of Pr3+ can be observed under intra-configurational (4f-4f) and charge transfer band (Mo-O) excitations, respectively. Upon different excitations, the quenching concentration of Pr3+ is diverse due to the multi-phonon relaxation and cross-relaxation processes occurring in different excited states of Pr3+ ions. The fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) techniques based on emissions of P-3(0) and D-1(2) excited states of Pr3+, and the FIR in the excitations of the charge transfer band (Mo-O) and 4f-4f transitions of Pr3+ were employed for the thermometric characterizations in the 298-498 K range. Both results show remarkable performance in temperature sensing with the maximum relative sensitivity of 0.45%K-1@489 K and 0.98 %K-1@298 K, respectively. Our study demonstrates that Pr3+-activated SrMoO4 phosphors have a promising potential appli-cation in non-contact optical thermometry.
Dual-emitting temperature dependent material based on Bi3+/Eu3+ co-activated Ba2Y2Si4O13 phosphor with multicolor anti-counterfeiting

Abstract:Bi3+, Eu3+ co-doped Ba2Y2Si4O13 phosphors with multi-color luminescence properties were prepared by high temperature solid state method. The structure, luminescent properties and temperature characteristics were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, fluorescence spectrum and temperature-dependence of emission spectrum. Ba2Y2Si4O13: Bi3+, Eu3+ phosphors can emit color from cyan to red when the excitation wavelength was changed from 340 nm to 390 nm, which is attributed to that there are two Bi3+ ion emission centers, and their emission intensity will change with the change of excitation wavelength. Moreover, the emission of the phosphor has good temperature sensing characteristics, based on the fluorescence intensity ratio of the two blue emission bands of Bi3+ and the red emission peak of Eu3+, a multimode thermometer with high temperature sensitivity was constructed. At the same time, based on the dynamic luminescence characteristics of the phosphor, the dynamic anti-counterfeiting experiments are designed. Therefore, the results show that the material has a bright prospect in the field of temperature sensing and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:To fulfill bifunctional applications of the white light-emitting diode (white-LED) and optical thermometry, Eu3+-activated Ca2Gd8Si6O26 phosphors were prepared. Upon 394 nm excitation, dazzling red emission with admirable color purity of 93.8% was seen and the optimal doping content of the Eu3+ ions in the Ca2Gd8Si6O26 host was 30 mol%. The Ca2Gd8Si6O26:2.4Eu3+ phosphors showed a high quantum efficiency of 53.9%. Via investigation of the relation between the dopant content and emission intensity, one knows that the concentration quenching mechanism was decided by electric dipole-dipole interaction. Though estimating the values of Ω2 and Ω4 based on the Judd-Ofelt theory, it was proved that the Eu3+ ions took the low symmetry sites in the Ca2Gd8Si6O26 host lattices. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent emission spectra manifested that the resultant compounds had splendid thermal stability with activation energy of 0.25 eV. Utilizing the prepared compounds as the red-emitting components, a white-LED was packaged and it can emit high quality white light with high color rendering index (84.8) and low correlated color temperature (4981 K). Additionally, through analyzing the temperature-dependent excitation spectrum, the optical thermometric behaviors of the designed phosphors were studied. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of the studied compounds were 0.0014 K-1 and 0.276% K−1, respectively. These results provided a new insight into searching for novel bifunctional luminescent materials towards white-LED and ratiometric optical thermometer applications.

Abstract:In this article, the tunable-color emission properties of Ce3+/Eu3+ in NaY9Si6O26 phosphors were reported. Ce3+ and Eu3+ ions had effectively incorporated the sites of Na+ and Y3+ ions, which were revealed by Rietveld refinements. The site occupation preference of Ce3+ in cationic sites were discussed. The energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu3+ ion under the 312 nm excitation was ascribed to dipole-dipole interaction mechanism based on Dexter's energy transfer theory of multipolar interaction, which makes NaY9Si6O26: Ce3+, Eu3+ produce tunable-color emission. Additionally, the temperature dependent emission spectra of the powders were studied. Temperature sensing performances were reflected by the fluorescence intensity ratio based on different temperature dependent variation tendency of Ce3+ and Eu3+ ions. The maximum values of the absolute and relative sensor sensitivities of NaY9Si6O26: Ce3+, Eu3+ phosphors were about 0.0328 K−1 and 0.95 % K−1, respectively. Above all, NaY9Si6O26: Ce3+, Eu3+ phosphors show a promising prospect for optical thermometer applications.

Abstract:Rare earth co-doped phosphor for fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometer has gained increasing attention in recent years. Herein, the novel Tb3+ and Eu3+ co-doped K3SrBi(P2O7)2 (KSBP) phosphate phosphors were reported. The crystal structure of the title phosphor was determined using Rietveld refinement and proved to have a three-dimensional structure. The time-resolved spectroscopy reveals that there is almost no energy transfer between Tb3+ and Eu3+. More importantly, Tb3+ and Eu3+ emissions show different thermal quenching behaviors, which claims the potential of this material for application in optical thermometer. The FIR of the typical KSBP:0.02Tb3+,0.04Eu3+ sample demonstrates a polynomial relationship as a function of temperature and the absolute and relative sensitivity are 0.025 K–1 and 0.59%/K, respectively. In general, our study reports a novel and potential KSBP:Tb3+,Eu3+ phosphate phosphor that is promising for use in high-sensitive FIR thermometers.

Abstract:Optical thermometry based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) has garnered much attention as it pushes beyond the limitations of traditional thermometers. Here, we present a new strategy for FIR thermometry using dual emissions from Sr9In(VO4)7:xEu3+ (SIVO:xEu3+) phosphors by a single activation. A series of color tunable SIVO:xEu3+ phosphors was successfully synthesized, and their luminescent properties were investigated. The phosphors emit broadband from VO4 3 − groups as well as sharp emissions from Eu3+ ions upon ultraviolet excitation (320 nm) with high thermal stability and little to no concentration quenching of Eu3+. Meanwhile, the SIVO:0.8Eu3+ phosphor demonstrates a high quantum efficiency of 49%. The emitting color could be modulated from cyan to red via regulating the energy transfer efficiency from VO4 3 − to Eu3+ ions by adjusting Eu3+concentration. A prototype LED device based on SIVO:xEu3+ phosphors produces a bright white light with low color temperatures (2967–3741 K) and high color rendering indices (87–88.4%). Moreover, optical thermometry measurements using fluorescence intensity ratio of VO4 3 − and Eu3+ emissions demonstrated optimum absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity of 0.0975 K−1 and 1.26% K−1, respectively. Regulating the energy transfer between the host and activator proved to be a feasible strategy to modulate the emission color and achieve optical thermometry in a single-phase phosphor. The reported results also provide insights into designing multifunctional materials for both White-LED (W-LED) and thermometry applications.

Abstract:To develop efficient luminescence and optical thermometry materials for color display and non-contact temperature measurement, novel RE3+ (RE = Eu, Sm) doped self-activated Na2LuMg2V3O12 phosphors were prepared by a typical solid-state reaction method. Their crystal structure, morphology, multi-color luminescence and temperature sensing properties were elaborately investigated. Under UV light excitation, an intense and broad green-yellow emission band from VO43– group is observed in the Na2LuMg2V3O12 matrix, indicating its potential application in solid state lighting. After the incorporation of Eu3+ and Sm3+ ions, efficient energy transfer (ET) from VO43– group to Eu3+/Sm3+ ions occurs and the emission color of the samples can be readily tuned among different color ranges. Besides, based on the change of luminescence intensity and lifetimes of VO43– group in Na2LuMg2V3O12:Eu3+ and Na2LuMg2V3O12:Sm3+, the ET efficiency was analyzed and the mechanism is illustrated. Finally, large discrepancy between the thermal stability of VO43– group and Eu3+/Sm3+ ions are observed in the temperature-dependent emission spectra of Na2LuMg2V3O12:Eu3+ and Na2LuMg2V3O12:Sm3+. By taking advantage of the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) between VO43– group and Eu3+/Sm3+ ions in Na2LuMg2V3O12:0.01Eu3+ and Na2LuMg2V3O12:0.07Sm3+, two new types of optical thermometry mediums were designed and their basic temperature sensing parameters were calculated.

Abstract:Currently,lanthanide ions doped luminescence materials applying as optical thermometers have arose much concern. Basing on the different responses of two emissions to temperature, the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique can be executed and further estimate the sensitivities to assess the optical thermometry performances. In this study, we introduce different doping concentrations of Eu$^{3+}$ ions into negative expansion material Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$, accessing to the thermal enhanced luminescence from 373 to 548 K, and investigate the temperature sensing properties in detail. All samples exhibit good thermally enhanced luminescence behavior. The emission intensity of Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$: 6 mol% Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors reaches at 147.81% of initial intensity at 473 K. As the Eu doping concentration increases, the resistance of the samples to thermal quenching decreases. The FIR technique based on the transitions 5D0-7F1 (592 nm) and 5D0-7F2 (613 nm) of Eu$^{3+}$ ions demonstrate a maximum relative temperature sensitivity of 3.063% K-1 at 298 K for Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$: 6 mol% Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors. The sensitivity of sample decreases with the increase of Eu$^{3+}$ concentration. Benefiting from the thermal enhanced luminescence performance and good temperature sensing properties, the Sc$_2$W$_3$O$_{12}$:Eu$^{3+}$: Eu$^{3+}$ phosphors can be applies as optical thermometers.
