Abstract:The power output and stability of enzyme-based biofuel cells (BFCs) is greatly dependent on the properties of both the biocathode and bioanode, which may be adapted for portable power production. In this paper, a novel highly uniform three-dimensional (3D) macroporous gold (MP-Au) film was prepared by heating the gold "supraspheres", which were synthesized by a bottom-up protein templating approach, and followed by modification of laccase on the MP-Au film by covalent immobilization. The as-prepared laccase/MP-Au biocathode exihibited an onset potential of 0.62 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE, or 0.86 V vs NHE, normal hydrogen electrode) toward O2 reduction and a high catalytic current of 0.61 mAcm(-2). On the other hand, mutated glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) surface displayed bacteria (GDH-bacteria) were used to improve the stability of the glucose oxidation at the bioanode. The as-assembled membraneless glucose/O2 fuel cell showed a high power output of 55.8 ± 2.0 μW cm(-2) and open circuit potential of 0.80 V, contributing to the improved electrocatalysis toward O2 reduction at the laccase/MP-Au biocathode. Moreover, the BFC retained 84% of its maximal power density even after continuous operation for 55 h because of the high stability of the bacterial surface displayed GDH mutant toward glucose oxidation. Our findings may be promising for the development of more efficient glucose BFC for portable battery or self-powered device applications.

Abstract:This review discusses different types of nano-gold hybrid materials used in electrodes for fuel cells and their application for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen, with the majority operating in alkaline media. The various synthesis methods for these materials are also described. Successful applications of these emerging hybrid materials with respect to parameters such as size and crystallographic orientations of nano-gold materials in electrodes, nano-gold composites on different substrates and electrode materials, nano-gold as binary catalytic materials, as well as dealloyed nanoporous gold electrocatalysts are highlighted. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are also discussed in the context of bioengineering topics such as bio-sensors, bio-fuel cells, and doping of biological molecules like DNA with NPs. Furthermore, limitations of these applications in addition to future applications that could be explored in the field of nano-gold hybrid materials are mentioned. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. A Direct Glucose Alkaline Fuel Cell Using MnO2–carbon Nanocomposite Supported Gold Catalyst for Anode Glucose Oxidation

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles supported on MnO2-carbon nanocomposite (Au/MnO2-C) are synthesised as the catalyst for the anodic oxidation of glucose for use in a direct glucose alkaline fuel cell (DGAFC). Characterisation of the catalyst is carried out using physical and electrochemical methods. It is observed that gold nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed onto the MnO2-carbon nanocomposite support. Cyclic voltammetry shows that the prepared Au/MnO2-carbon catalysts exhibit higher electro-catalytic activity for glucose oxidation than that of commercial Pt/C and Au/C catalysts. A maximum power density, at 30 degrees C, of 1.1 mW cm(-2) is obtained using an Au/MnO2-C anode catalyst in DGAFC, which is higher than that of the commercial Au/C catalyst. The enhanced activity is attributed to a catalytic effect of MnO2 towards glucose oxidation. MnO2-C nanocomposite is a promising approach for reducing noble metal catalyst loading in addition to improving the catalytic activity of gold catalyst for glucose oxidation. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A non-enzymatic glucose biofuel cell (GBFCs) with high-power density and adequate open-circuit potential in physiological environment is based on the improved hydrogen template electrodeposition of the platinum-nickel (PtNi) nanoalloys (the third step adopted a potential-step electrochemical synthesis instead of the conventional method). The morphology tests demonstrate that the highly porous PtxNi1-x nanoalloys exhibit broader pore-size distribution and larger specific electrochemically active surface area than the Pt monometallic nanostructures. Combined with cyclic voltammograms, polarization parameters and cell tests, degradation behavior measurements prove that the nanoalloy products display the excellent long-term stability and high electrocatalytic activity. Controlling the preparation conditions of the highly porous PtxNi1-x nanoalloys could control the morphology and nanostructure of the as-synthesis nanoalloys in order to improve the catalytic performance of these nanoalloys, which grants it great potentialities for controllable synthesis of electrocatalysts in the application of GBFCs.Graphical abstractDescriptionThe highlyporous platinum nickel nanoalloys are applied as bothanode and cathode in the non-enzymatic glucose biofuel cell withhigh-power density and adequate open-circuit potential inphysiological environment.

Abstract:Herein, the authors propose a miniaturized glucose/O2 n-EFC based on a new direct electron transfer. The anode is a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNTs) and cauliflower-like PdAu nanostructures (PdAuNS). The PdAuNS/f-CNT biomimetic nanocatalyst was prepared using a cost-effective and straightforward method, which consisted of drop-casting well-dispersed f-CNTs over the SPCE surface before PdAuNS electrodeposition. This enzyme-free interface was used for glucose electrooxidation at neutral medium (pH 7.4). The electrochemical behaviour of the PdAuNS/f-CNT/SPCE was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and amperometry. Several parameters were optimized and discussed, including the metal precursor concentration (HAuCl4, PdCl2) and the electrodeposition conditions. The cathode for oxygen electroreduction is an air-cathode which is composed of Pt-coated carbon cloth. The electrochemical performances of the anode and the cathode were evaluated separately for glucose oxidation and oxygen reduction, respectively. Both electrodes were then assembled in a membrane-less single chamber n-EFC with an innovative architecture. Electrical characterization of the n-EFC supplied with a neutral buffered solution containing 20 mM glucose showed a maximal power output of 129 ± 11 μW cm-2, a current density of 600 ± 39 μA cm-2 with a cell voltage of 0.35 V, and an open circuit potential of 0.56 V. The proposed electrocatalyst possesses several advantages such as fast response, low cost, reusability, poison-free characteristics, and good stability. Hence, glucose/O2 n-EFC could be of great interest in direct glucose fuel cell applications (e.g., powering mountable/implantable biomedical micro-devices running at low electrical power supply) or in self-powered biosensing.

Abstract:In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites doped with nitrogen (N), sulfur (S) and transitional metal (Ni, Co, Fe) were synthesized by using a simple one-step in-situ hydrothermal approach. Electrochemical characterization showed that rGO-NS-Ni was the most prominent catalyst for glucose oxidation. The current density of the direct glucose alkaline fuel cell (DGAFC) with rGO-NS-Ni as the anode catalyst reached 148.0 mA/cm2, which was 40.82% higher than the blank group. The DGAFC exhibited a maximum power density of 48 W/m2, which was more than 2.08 folds than that of blank group. The catalyst was further characterized by SEM, XPS and Raman. It was speculated that the boosted performance was due to the synergistic effect of N, S-doped rGO and the metallic redox couples, (Ni2+/Ni3+, Co2+/Co3+ and Fe2+/Fe3+), which created more active sites and accelerated electron transfer. This research can provide insights for the development of environmental benign catalysts and promote the application of the DGAFCs.

Abstract:Membrane electrode assemblies, as the core component, mainly determine the overall performance of fuel cells. As a part of it, the anode electrode is vitally important for the mass transportation and electrochemical reaction. To gain a high cell performance, the structures of the anode electrode are designed by optimizing the component parameters of the micro-porous and catalyst layers. The effect of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content in anode micro-porous layer and catalyst loading in catalyst layer on electrode resistance and electrochemical performance are investigated. The current collection effect affected by the carbon loading of micro-porous layer is analyzed, and the influence of catalyst binder on the fuel electrolyte transportation performance has been explained from the aspects of microscopic morphology. The experimental results show that the resistance of anode micro-porous layer can be decreased significantly by loading carbon black powder and PTFE with optimal contents on the microporous layer. As compared with the 12 anion-ionomer, the fuel electrolyte transportation can be facilitated by applying PTFE-bonded anode catalyst layer due to the richer micro-pores and larger specific surface area. In addition, there is an optimal anode catalyst loading of 1.7 mg(Pd).cm(-2) to achieve the highest peak power density of 11.5 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A glucose-driven enzymatic filter-paper fuel cell is described. A strip of filter paper coated with carbon nanotubes and the glucose oxidase enzyme functions as the anode of the enzyme fuel cell. Another strip of filter paper coated with carbon nanotubes and the laccase enzyme functions as the cathode. Between the anode and the cathode, a third strip of filter paper is placed that holds the glucose, which is the fuel, and that allows the transport of ions. The design of the cell is simple, and all the materials used for the construction are readily available and biocompatible. The cell utilizes the oxidation of glucose to generate electricity and is useful to demonstrate how chemical energy can be converted to electrical energy.
Deep oxidization of glucose driven by 4-acetamido-TEMPO for a glucose fuel cell at room temperature

Abstract:Exploiting suitable oxidation catalysts is of great importance in the development of sugar-based fuel cells (SFCs). Herein, a novel room-temperature glucose/O2 fuel cell (GFC), which employs 4-acetamido-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (ACT) as an anodic electrocatalyst and air-breathing Pt-C as a cathode, is demonstrated. Under room temperature operation, the as-assembled GFCs are capable of delivering a maximum power density of 100 μW cm-2 in the presence of 50 mM glucose. Bulk electrolysis products of glucose identified by mass spectrum and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy include gluconic acid and glucaric acid, suggesting that the aldehyde and primary hydroxy groups of glucose can be deeply oxidized into carboxyl groups through a 6e- pathway. The deep glucose oxidation capability makes ACT a promising anodic electrocatalyst for SFCs.

Abstract:Glucose has proven to be a promising fuel for renewable and sustainable fuel cells due to its high energy density. The anion-exchange membrane (AEM) direct glucose fuel cell (DGFC) attracted lots of attentions because of the higher performance than the conventional microbial fuel cell. Among the factors affecting the performance of the DGFC, the anode structure plays an important role, but presently, a general understanding of the anode electrode design is far less understood. In this work, anode structure was designed for the high-performance AEM DGFC, including the configurations of the anode electrode and the compositions of both the micro-porous layer (MPL) and catalyst layer(CL). The experimental results revealed that the fabrication of the anode electrode with catalyzed diffusion medium (CDM) method yielded better performance than that with catalyst-coated membrane (CCM) method because of lower resistance of the mass transport. It was found that the addition of an ultra-thin MPL (0.3mg cm-2 carbon loading) between backing layer (BL) and CL improved the cell performance due to it can facilitate the electron transfer. In addition, the MEA with PTFE binder in the anode CL showed a better cell performance than that with I2 binder due to the enhanced mass transport and larger active surface area.

Abstract:Direct oxidation alkaline fuel cells (DOAFCs) possess particular advantages on the possibility of employing low cost non-noble metal catalysts. A wide range of fuels can be used due to superior reaction kinetics in alkaline media. The development of DOAFCs was hindered by the carbonation of electrolyte due to the presence of CO2. The application of the anion exchange membrane (AEM) provides the possibility of reducing the effect of carbonation and fuel crossover which is an issue in the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The latest developments in alkaline fuel cells are examined in this paper, considering different types of fuels, novel catalysts and anion exchange membranes. Moreover, alkaline fuel cell systems and configurations are studied, particularly the new designs for portable or microelectronic devices. Further development of DOAFCs will rely on novel AEMs with good ionic conductivity and stability, low cost non-Pt catalysts with high activity and good stability for various fuels and oxidant. We envisage that DOAFCs will play a major role in energy research and applications in the near future.

Abstract:Sodium hypophosphite is newly reported as fuel for direct liquid fuel cell, hoping to replace methanol and borohydride for its power performance, safety and low-cost. However, the hydrogen evolution problem during discharge has seriously restricted the widespread use of direct hypophosphite fuel cell. Herein, we report a new design of anode electrode assembly, bringing in an additional layer for hydrogen oxidation above the original catalyst layer, which eventually increases the Faradaic efficiency and energy efficiency in different discharge conditions. The analyzing methods by P-31 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (P-31 NMR) are also carefully discussed. The new designed membrane electrode assembly (MEA) reaches 90% Faradaic efficiency when the fuel is discharged to 0 V and the strategy may bring new solution for other biproduct-generating fuels in direct liquid fuel cells.
Carbon Nanotube-Hydroxyapatite Nanocomposite: A Novel Platform for Glucose/O-2 Biofuel Cell

Abstract:This study demonstrates a novel carbon nanotubes-hydroxyapatite (CNTs–HA) nanocomposite-based compartment-less glucose/O2 biofuel cell (BFC) with the glucose oxidase (GOD) as the anodic biocatalysts and the laccase as the cathodic biocatalysts. CNTs–HA nanocomposite prepared by the self-assembly method via an aqueous solution reaction has been used as the co-immobilization matrix to incorporate biocatalysts, i.e. GOD and laccase successfully. Moreover, the three-dimensional configuration of the CNTs–HA films electrode would be advantageous to the glucose oxidation on the bioanode and O2 electroreduction on the biocathode of BFC. The maximum power density delivered by the assembled glucose/O2 BFC could reach 15.8μWcm−2 at a cell voltage of 0.28V with 10mM glucose. The results indicate that the CNTs–HA nanocomposite is believed to be very useful for the development of novel BFC device.

Abstract:In this work, nano-inspired nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO) and polythiophene (Pth) modified bioanode was prepared for biofuel cell applications. The chemically prepared nickel oxide nanoparticles and its composite with polythiophene were characterized for elemental composition and microscopic characterization while using scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical characterizations of polythiophene@NiO composite, biocompatible mediator ferritin (Frt) and glucose oxidase (GOx) catalyst modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode were carried out using cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and charge-discharge studies. The current density of Pth@NiO/Frt/GOx bioanode was found to be 5.4 mA/cm2. The bioanode exhibited a good bio-electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of the glucose. The experimental studies of the bioanode are justifying its employment in biofuel cells. This will cater a platform for the generation of sustainable energy for low temperature devices.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a neutral non-enzymatic glucose biofuel cell (GBFC) based on a Pt/Au nano-alloy anode. We synthesize Pt/Au alloy anodes by the electrochemical deposition of a Pt/Au nano-alloy on the surface of a thin polyethylene terephthalate membrane with a uniformly distributed microhemispheric array. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed GBFC can generate a maximum power density of 0.32 mW/cm2, an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.42 V, and a short-circuit current (Isc) density of 2.67 mA/cm2 with 5 mM of glucose in a 0.1-M PBS (pH 7.4) solution while the cathode is being supplied with 7% saturated oxygen. The synergistic effect of the Pt/Au bimetallic alloy is found to improve the performance of the proposed GBFC. The proposed neutral non-enzymatic GBFC shows promising feasibility as an implantable power supply system for the provision of continuous and consistent electricity to a continuous glucose monitoring system.

Abstract:Today, perhaps the most pressing issue is that of power generation. It is important that a source which is inexpensive, reliable, efficient, sustainable, and carbon free be developed and implemented. The hydrogen fuel cell is one possibility. Fuel cells meet many of the requirements listed above save one, current designs are expensive. The catalysts used in most modern hydrogen fuel cells are often platinum group metals, which significantly increases the cost of manufacturing. The high price has proved a significant barrier to adoption. Alkaline fuel cells are comparatively cheap as the catalysts are inexpensive, but they suffer from reliability issues. For one, they form carbonates, which are produced when carbon dioxide reacts with the potassium hydroxide electrolyte. Carbonates build up on the catalytic sites, rendering the fuel cell inoperable. With this project, the chemistry is being manipulated to eliminate this failure. The standard electrolyte is being replaced with an organic amine. Carbonates are soluble in amines and will not precipitate out of solution. This will prevent the buildup and may clean catalytic sites. This project is also testing low-cost production processes. We are using electrochemical synthesis methods to deposit nickel and silver onto carbon cloth to build the fuel cell electrodes. These are then characterized via SEM, EDAX, and x-ray fluorescence. The purpose of this is to establish what size of particles will afford the maximum catalytic activity. Optimizing particle size will help to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Prototypes will be built to identify the best amine and catalyst samples. By the end of 2024, the first cell will be built and tested. Next year, a full-scale alkaline amine fuel cell system will be built. It will be tested as a twelve-volt system for current density, lifetime and total costs.

Abstract:Three-dimensional hierarchical nitrogen-doped graphene (3D-NG) frameworks were successfully fabricated through a feasible solution dip-coating method with commercially available sponges as the initial backbone. A spongy template can help hinder the graphene plates restacking in the period of the annealing process. The Pt/3D-NG catalyst was synthesized employing a polyol reduction process. The resultant Pt/3D-NG exhibits 2.3 times higher activity for methanol electro-oxidation along with the improvement in stability as compared with Pt/G owing to their favorable features including large specific surface area, high pore volume, high N doping level, and the homogeneous dispersion of Pt nanoparticles. Besides, Pt/3D-NG also presents high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance in acid media when compared with Pt/3D-G and Pt/G. This work raises a valid solution for the fabrication of 3D functional freestanding graphene-based composites for a variety of applications in fuel cell catalysis, energy storage, and conversion.

Abstract:We fabricated an enzyme fuel cell (EFC) device based on glucose as fuel and glucose oxidase (GOx) as biocatalyst. As a strategy to improve GOx stability, preserving at the same time the enzyme catalytic activity, we propose an immobilization procedure to entrap GOx in a polymer matrix based on Nafion and multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra were recorded to study changes in the 3D structure of GOx that might be generated by the immobilization procedure. The comparison between the CD features of GOx immobilized and free in solution indicates that the shape of the spectra and position of peaks do not significantly change. The bioelectrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation of immobilized GOx was studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry experiments. Such electrochemical experiments allow monitoring the rate of GOx-catalyzed glucose oxidation and extrapolating GOx kinetic parameters. Results demonstrate that immobilized GOx has high catalytic efficiency, due the maintaining of regular and well-ordered structure of the immobilized enzyme, as indicated by spectroscopic findings. Once investigated the electrode structure–property relationship, an EFC device was assembled using the GOx-based bioanode, and sulfonated poly ether ether ketone as electrolyte membrane. Polarization and power density curves of the complete EFC device were acquired, demonstrating the suitability of the immobilization strategy and materials to be used in EFCs.

Abstract:This study demonstrated a novel nanographene platelets (NGPs)-based glucose/O2 biofuel cell (BFC) with the glucose oxidase (GOD) as the anodic biocatalysts and the laccase as the cathodic biocatalysts. The GOD/NGPs-modified electrode exhibited good catalytic activity towards glucose oxidation and the laccase/NGPs-modified electrode exhibited good catalytic activity towards O2 electroreduction. The maximum power density was ca. 57.8μWcm−2 for the assembled glucose/O2 NGPs-based BFC. These results indicated that the NGPs were very useful for the future development of novel carbon-based nanomaterials BFC device.

Abstract:A facile recipe has been developed to prepare three-dimensional nano-architectures of nitrogen-doped graphene loading Co nanoparticle hybrids (Co/NG).
