Abstract:Urbanization is one of the main factors altering hydrological processes. To understand the influence of urbanization on flood characteristics including runoff, inundation and streamflow, it is essential to quantify the level of urbanization and analyze the corresponding impacts on flood. This study proposed an integrated and systematic framework to assess how urbanization affects flood characteristics in Hangzhou, China. Land use changes in 2000–2020 representing the level of urbanization were extracted from Landsat images with an ensemble machine learning method and future scenarios were designed with Patch-generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS). The runoff, inundation and streamflow under 24 h design rainfall with 100 year return period were assessed using the integrated hydrologic-hydraulic model for land use of different years. Finally, the relationship between land use changes and flood characteristics were identified and analyzed. It was found that the study area underwent a rapid urbanization process with artificial surface increasing from 6.93

Abstract:Dense buildings in modern city usually have a great influence on urban flood propagation,and the use of high resolution meshes to distinguish the buildings based on their actual size and elevation in large-scale urban flood simulation is often limited by the computational time.It is important to efficiently simulate the effect of buildings on flood propagation in the risk assessment of urban flood.In this paper,a two-dimensional numerical model of urban flood is established by introducing the Building Density Coefficient (BDC)in the shallow water equation to reflect the influence of buildings on the urban flood propagation.In the model,a central-upwind scheme is used to calcu-late the flux across the interface of computational mesh and the linear reconstruction of flow variables is adopted to achieve the second-order accuracy in space.A central difference method is used to discretize the bed slope source term to maintain the well-balanced property.The friction source term and local head loss term are calculated using a semi-implicit method to ensure the stability of model.The model can guarantee the positivity of water depth when the Courant number meets certain condition,which means there is no need to treat negative water depth problem. The simulated result shows that the established numerical model with BDC can deal with the building area as a whole zone and is not restricted by the grid size,which greatly shortens the computational time to 1 /50 of that using high resolution method with good accuracy.

Abstract:There is a general lack of understanding of tsunami wave interaction with complex geographies, especially the process of inundation. Numerical simulations are performed to understand the effects of several factors on tsunami wave impact and run-up in the presence of gentle submarine slopes and coastal cliffs, using an in-house code, a constrained interpolation profile (CIP)-based model. The model employs a high-order finite difference method, the CIP method, as the flow solver; utilizes a VOF-type method, the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing/slope weighting (THINC/SW) scheme, to capture the free surface; and treats the solid boundary by an immersed boundary method. A series of incident waves are arranged to interact with varying coastal geographies. Numerical results are compared with experimental data and good agreement is obtained. The influences of gentle submarine slope, coastal cliff and incident wave height are discussed. It is found that the tsunami amplification factor varying with incident wave is affected by gradient of cliff slope, and the critical value is about 45°. The run-up on a toe-erosion cliff is smaller than that on a normal cliff. The run-up is also related to the length of a gentle submarine slope with a critical value of about 2.292 m in the present model for most cases. The impact pressure on the cliff is extremely large and concentrated, and the backflow effect is non-negligible. Results of our work are highly precise and helpful in inverting tsunami source and forecasting disaster.
The Compound Effect of Spatial and Temporal Resolutions on the Accuracy of Urban Flood Simulation

Abstract:Flood disaster is one of the critical threats to cities. With the intellectualization tendency of Industry 4.0, refined urban flood models can effectively reproduce flood inundation scenarios and support the decision-making on the response to the flood. However, the spatiotemporal variability of rainfall and the spatial heterogeneity of the surface greatly increase the uncertainties in urban flood simulations. Therefore, it is crucial to account for spatiotemporal variability of rainfall events and grids of the model as accurately as possible to avoid misleading simulation results. This study aims to investigate the effect of temporal resolutions of rainfall and spatial resolutions of the model on urban flood modeling in small urban catchments and to explore a proper combination of spatiotemporal schemes. The IFMS Urban (integrated flood modeling system, urban) is used to construct a one-dimension and two-dimension coupled urban flood model in the typical inundated area in Dongguan, China. Based on five temporal resolutions of rainfall input and four spatial resolutions, the compound effect of spatiotemporal resolutions on the accuracy of urban flood simulations is systematically analyzed, and the variation characteristics are investigated. The results show that the finer the temporal resolution is, the higher the simulation accuracy of the maximum inundated water depth. Considering the spatial resolution, as the spatial grid becomes smaller, the relative error of the maximum inundated water depth decreases, but it also shows some nonlinear characteristics. Therefore, the smaller grid does not always mean a better simulation. The spatial resolution has a greater impact on the flood simulation accuracy than the temporal resolution. The simulation performance reaches the best when the grid interval is 100 m and the rainfall input interval is 5 min, 10 min, or 15 min. Affected by other factors such as terrain slope, the simulation accuracies under different spatiotemporal resolutions present complex nonlinear characteristics. The mechanisms of the compound effect of the spatiotemporal resolutions on the model simulation and the effect of underlying surface and topography on model simulation will be the focus of in-depth exploration for the future urban flood model.
Impact of Refined Boundary Conditions of Land Objects on Urban Hydrological Process Simulation

Abstract:Urbanization has led to an increase in impervious areas and, consequently, an increase in the surface runoff volume and runoff rate. This has exacerbated urban flooding and highlighted the importance of modeling urban hydrological processes. The Waterview Community of Hangzhou City (WCHC) was taken as the study area, and three scenarios were developed: the original scenario, the rough description scenario, and the fine description scenario. The urban hydrological processes were simulated through a coupled model incorporating actual measurements and four design precipitation events (1-year, 5-year, 10-year, and 20-year return periods). The results show the following: (1) The refined depiction scenario has the highest accuracy in terms of measured precipitation, with an average error of 0.54 cm. (2) During different precipitation return periods, the refined depiction scenario shows the smallest range of accumulated water, with a more realistic distribution. On average, it differed from the original scenario by 21.45% and from the rough depiction scenario by 32.18%. (3) The simulation results after the refinement of the feature boundaries are more reasonable in terms of the flow rate and flow direction, indicating that the simulation results have better dynamics. The results showed that refined boundary conditions improved the accuracy and dynamics of urban hydrological simulations, especially in terms of their reflection of actual water accumulation under varying precipitation conditions.

Abstract:This study proposes a modelling framework of integrated one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic modelling to evaluate the effectiveness of sponge city construction at community scale. Through a case study in Zhuhai, we integrate Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) and Cellular Automata Dual-DraInagE Simulation (CADDIES) 2D model to analyze the rainfall-runoff process involving green infrastructures. SWMM is applied to analyze the change of surface runoff control effects before and after the implementation of sponge city low impact development (LID) facilities, and CADDIES is adopted to simulate the propagation of excess runoff on the surface. The results show that the LID facilities can effectively reduce the runoff volume of small and medium-sized rainfall events since the maximum runoff reduction rate is 94.4%. For long-term operation, the LID can capture 52.9% of annual rainfall volume and reduce annual runoff by 28.0%. However, the CADDIES 2D model simulations indicate that LID facilities have little effect on flood alleviation in specific regions under extreme rainfall conditions. In addition, we compared the modelling performance using four different terrain Digital Elevation Model (DEM) resolutions and found that 1 m terrain DEM resolution can produce comparable results to 0.25 m DEM with a fraction of computational time. We also find that the MIKE FLOOD model and the integrated model of SWMM and CADDIES 2D can obtain similar simulation results, the p-value = 0.09 which is >0.05, but SWMM-CADDIES integrated model is more suitable for small-scale simulation. Abstract:Abstract Easy access to and advances in satellite remote sensing data has enabled enhanced analysis of ocean fronts, physical and ecologically important areas where water masses converge. Recent development of higher-resolution satellite imagery to detect ocean fronts provides the potential to better capture patterns and trends of ocean change and improve modelling and prediction efforts. This study examines the relationship between satellite data spatial resolution and its influence on the quantification of frontal characteristics, frontal quantity, length, strength and density. We also examine the relationship between Finite-Size Lyapunov Exponents and image resolution. We found higher spatial resolution leads to increased frontal quantity and decreased frontal length. Also, both strength and spatial density of fronts differ at various resolutions. The Finite-Size Lyapunov Exponent value does not change significantly with resolution. Knowledge of the impact of resolution on the quantification of frontal characteristics is crucial as it enables the exploration of novel experimental design to further facilitate the development of improved parameterization and uncertainties in ocean modelling/studies.

Abstract:Understanding the strengths and limitations of the modeling capacity of surface flooding in urbanized floodplains is of utmost importance as such events are becoming increasingly frequent and extreme. In this study, we assess two computational models against laboratory observations of surface urban flooding in a reduced‐scale physical model of idealized urban districts. Four urban layouts were considered, involving each three inlets and three outlets as well as a combination of three‐ and four‐branch crossroads together with open spaces. The first model (2D) solves the shallow‐water equations while the second one (3D) solves the Reynolds‐averaged Navier‐Stokes equations. Both models accurately predict the flow depths in the inlet branches. For the discharge partition between the outlets, deviations between the computations and laboratory observations remain close to the experimental uncertainties (maximum 2.5 percent‐points). The velocity fields computed in 3D generally match the measured surface velocity fields. In urban layouts involving mostly a network of streets, the depth‐averaged velocity fields computed by the 2D model agree remarkably well with those of the 3D model, with differences not exceeding 10%, despite the presence of helicoidal flow (revealed by the 3D computations). In configurations with large open areas, the 3D model captures generally well the trajectory and velocity distribution of main surface flow jet and recirculations; but the 2D model does not perform as well as it does in relatively channelized flow regions. Visual inspection of the jet trajectories computed by the 2D model in large open areas reveals that they substantially deviate from the observations.

Abstract:As climate change intensifies, cities globally are experiencing more severe rainfall and frequent pluvial floods. Urban expansion is altering the permeability of the land, thus increasing the risk of flooding. This study investigates the impact of urban morphology on pluvial floodwater distribution in 15 urban catchments across England, UK, to provide an analysis of how urban morphology influences flood magnitude. Using a cellular automata-based model, pluvial flood simulations were conducted for catchments characterized by diverse urban morphologies. Then a series of machine learning models were adopted to reveal the relationships between the morphological characteristics of urban configurations (e.g., building footprints, impervious surfaces, street network, topography) and pluvial flooding. These models were used to identify and quantify the effects of key urban morphological indicators on pluvial flooding. The results indicate that, although the total area of impervious surfaces plays the most significant role in floodwater distribution, the edge density (ED) of building footprints and impervious surfaces also influences this process. Synthetic experiments with an exemplary urban fabric show that decreasing "ED of building footprint" and increasing "ED of impervious surface" can mitigate flood volume by up to 6.3 % at 100 % drainage efficiency and 7.8 % at 50 % efficiency. The results of this study are anticipated to aid urban planners and policymakers in developing strategies for implementing flood-resilient cities.

Abstract:Assessing the influence of urban density on surface runoff volume is vital for guiding the built-form expansions toward flood-resilient cities. This paper attempts to develop a spatial simulation framework to assess the impact of urban density on the level of surface runoff (SR), at the scale of the micro-watershed. This paper proposes a spatial simulation framework that comprehensively captures the influence of urban density dynamics over surface runoff. The simulation model consists of 13 proxies of urban density that are identified through a systematic literature review. The model is formulated through three case applications in Colombo, Sri Lanka; and validated statistically and empirically with reference to flooding events that occurred in 2021–2022. The possible planning interventions for reducing urban flooding are analyzed through an AI-based application of Decision Tree Analysis. The model results indicated that impervious coverage, open space ratio, and road density have the most significant impact on surface runoff volumes in selected micro-watersheds. The decision-making process for planning the built environment for reducing urban flooding is demonstrated by three possible density control options with a prediction accuracy of 98.7%, 94.8%, and 93.5% respectively. This contributes a novel framework to capture the density dynamics of built form in surface runoff simulations by three density areas (3Ds): density, diversity, and design; and to demonstrate the decision-making process for controlling the density of built form in reducing urban flooding.

Abstract:High-resolution flood maps are needed for more effective flood risk assessment and management. Producing these directly with hydrodynamic models is slow and computationally prohibitive at large scales. Here we demonstrate a new algorithm for post-processing low-resolution inundation layers by using high-resolution terrain models to disaggregate or downscale. The new algorithm is roughly 8 times faster than state-of-the-art algorithms and shows a slight improvement in accuracy when evaluated against observations of a recent flood using standard performance metrics. Qualitatively, the algorithm generates more physically coherent flood maps in some hydraulically challenging regions compared to the state of the art. The algorithm developed here is open source and can be applied in conjunction with a low-resolution hydrodynamic model and a high-resolution DEM to rapidly produce high-resolution inundation maps. For example, in our case study with a river reach of 20 km, the proposed algorithm generated a 4 m resolution inundation map from 32 m hydrodynamic model outputs in 33 s compared to a 4 m hydrodynamic model runtime of 34 min. This 60-fold improvement in runtime is associated with a 25 % increase in RMSE when compared against the 4 m hydrodynamic model results and observations of a recent flood. Substituting downscaling into flood risk model chains for high-resolution modelling has the potential to drastically improve the efficiency of inundation map production and increase the lead time of impact-based forecasts, helping more at-risk communities prepare for and mitigate flood damages.

Abstract:The area increment of land surface compared with its projected area is an effect of topographic relief and is also a source of environmental variations. To examine the effects of topography and data resolution on surface area calculation, we calculated incremental area coefficients (IACs), based on two different algorithms, for a DEM of China at a series of spatial resolutions. Sampling the DEM with a regional network of 50 km x 50 km cell size, we explored the relationships among the two IACs and topographic features. Both IACs studied were exponential functions of resolution. At 30-m resolution, the IACs were 4.31 and 4.89% over China, respectively. The largest increment for a 50 km x 50 km cell was >45%. Between the IACs there was a linear relationship that varied with DEM resolution. Hierarchical variation partitioning revealed that the factors included contributed in a very similar percentage composition to the two IACs, mean slope (37.5 or 38.7%) and standard deviation of slope (22.3 or 19.6%) at local scale dominated the area increment, followed by regional elevation range. Data resolution contributed about 10%, while the deviation of slope exposure only had minimal (1.4 or 1.7%) impact on surface-area increment. For a specific type of geomorphology, a threshold resolution of DEM can be determined, below which the surface-area increment (i.e., IAC) is negligible. Our results provided the first comprehensive estimate of the contributions of the topographic features, DEM resolution, and algorithms for the surface-area increment, and indicated the scale-related properties and potential environmental consequences of topographic heterogeneity in various estimates of natural resources and ecosystem functions when area needs to be taken into account.
Accumulated impacts of imperviousness on surface and subsurface hydrology—continuous modelling at urban street block scale

Abstract:To quantify the hydrological effects of disconnected impervious area is significant for urban planning and storm water management. Most relevant studies were event-based analysis and only focused on surface runoff. The accumulated impacts of disconnected imperviousness on both surface and subsurface runoff have not been fully understood yet. In this study, a physically based model coupling surface runoff, subsurface runoff and evapotranspiration was constructed for continuous simulation of the hydrological processes in an RPA (receiving pervious area)–DIA (disconnected impervious area) system at street block scale. Five RPA types with natural clay loam, compacted clay loam, natural sandy clay loam and depressed clay loam were considered. For each RPA type, urban development scenarios with varying disconnected impervious area ratios (DIRs) were designed. The results presented that both the annual total and averaged event-based surface runoff followed a generally Power form relationship with DIR for all the RPA types, which can be satisfactorily described by a concise and meaningful formula. Disconnected impervious surface can lead to higher event-based initial soil moistures, and it is much more significant when during dry months (autumn and winter) with less potential evapotranspiration intensity than during wet months (spring and summer). This results imply the importance to take the potential increased initial soil moisture of RPA and the corresponded increased runoff generation into consideration of storm water management when imperviousness disconnection is applied. At last, with the increase of DIR, the annual total groundwater recharge had a tendency to rise first and then decrease. This proves the possibility of improving underground water resource storage or maintain the groundwater recharge to the predeveloped level in the process of urban imperviousness expanding. Since this simulation work lacks on-ground validation, further studies based on the conclusions are still needed from the perspective of measured data analysis in urban RPA-DIA system.

Abstract:Floodplains with urban areas have significant effects on inundation flows. Large-scale modelling of such zones thus requires a special treatment to involve those effects. This paper presents a shallow-water model with porosity to account for the reduction in storage and in the exchange sections due to presence of buildings and other structures on the floodplains. The introduction of the porosity in the shallow-water equations modifies the expressions for the fluxes and source terms. Furthermore, it implies the addition of a specific source term. The equations are solved by means of a finite-volume scheme with a modified HLLC Riemann solver and upwind treatment of the source terms. The possibilities of the proposed approach are demonstrated by an application to a large-scale experiment that was part of the European IMPACT project, which represents the severe flooding of the Italian Toce valley. This demonstrates the key advantage of the method, as it allows an accurate representation of the flow without detailed meshing of the urbanized area.

Water-level attenuation in broad-scale assessments of exposure to coastal flooding: a sensitivity analysis

Abstract:Abstract. This study explores the uncertainty introduced in global assessments of coastal flood exposure and risk when not accounting for water level attenuation due to land-surface characteristics. We implement a range of plausible water-level attenuation values for characteristic land-cover classes in the flood module of the Dynamic and Integrated Vulnerability Assessment (DIVA) modelling framework and assess the sensitivity of flood exposure and flood risk indicators to differences in attenuation rates. Results show a reduction of up to 47 % in area exposure and even larger reductions in population exposure and expected flood damages when considering water level attenuation. The reductions vary by country, reflecting the differences in the physical characteristics of the floodplain as well as in the spatial distribution of people and assets in coastal regions. We find that uncertainties related to not accounting for water attenuation in global assessments of flood risk are of similar magnitude to the uncertainties related to the amount of SLR expected over the 21st century. Despite using simplified assumptions to account for the process of water level attenuation, which depends on numerous factors and their complex interactions, our results strongly suggest that an improved understanding and representation of the temporal and spatial variation of water levels across floodplains is essential for future impact modelling.

Abstract:Flood management activities require development of flood maps that depict the spatial and temporal extent of floods with the help of hydrodynamic models. Two‐dimensional (2‐D) hydrodynamic models are frequently employed for flood inundation modeling and mapping with the help of high‐end computational resources and high‐resolution terrain information such as LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data. However, LiDAR data are either unavailable or not freely accessible in many parts of the world, especially in nations belonging to Global South. Hence, one‐dimensional (1‐D) models are still in practice owing to their lesser computational cost and data requirement. Nonetheless, the successful application of a 1‐D model depends mainly on the representation of the natural river and floodplain geometry, which is the primary input in the form of discrete cross‐sections. The assumed flow directions on floodplains while orienting the cross‐sections in 1‐D models induce some uncertainty in the model simulations. This study aims to evaluate the variability in the model simulations caused by the cross‐sectional orientations. Flood simulations were performed using a 1‐D hydrodynamic model for six different cross‐sectional realizations for three river reaches, having distinct morphological and topographical characteristics, and were compared with the simulations of a 2‐D hydrodynamic model and available reference inundation maps. The study suggests that the simulations of flood inundation extent and maximum flow depth variation are influenced by the cross‐sectional orientation on flood plains in river reaches characterized by broad flood plains with complex local topographical variations. In contrast, for reaches with relatively less wide and complex terrains, 1‐D models can generate robust simulations of flood inundation extent and spatial variation in maximum flood depth (R2 and NSE greater than 0.89) for high flood events.

Abstract:As modeling capabilities at regional and global scales improve, questions remain regarding the appropriate process representation required to accurately simulate multichannel river hydraulics. This study uses the hydrodynamic model LISFLOOD‐FP to simulate patterns of water surface elevation (WSE), depth, and inundation extent across a ∼90 km, anabranching reach of the Tanana River, Alaska. To provide boundary conditions, we collected field observations of bathymetry and WSE during a 2 week field campaign in summer 2013. For the first time at this scale, we test a simple, raster‐based model's capabilities to simulate 2‐D, in‐channel patterns of WSE and inundation extent. Additionally, we compare finer resolution (≤25 m) 2‐D models to four other models of lower dimensionality and coarser resolution (100–500 m) to determine the effects of simplifying process representation. Results indicate that simple, raster‐based models can accurately simulate 2‐D, in‐channel hydraulics in the Tanana. Also, the fine‐resolution, 2‐D models produce lower errors in spatiotemporal outputs of WSE and inundation extent compared to coarse‐resolution, 1‐D models: 22.6 cm versus 56.4 cm RMSE for WSE, and 90% versus 41% Critical Success Index values for simulating inundation extent. Incorporating the anabranching channel network using subgrid representations for smaller channels is important for simulating accurate hydraulics and lowers RMSE in spatially distributed WSE by at least 16%. As a result, better representation of the converging and diverging multichannel network by using subgrid solvers or downscaling techniques in multichannel rivers is needed to improve errors in regional to global‐scale models.

Abstract:Large scale flood simulation in urban areas remains time consuming when applying finer grids which describe the feature of buildings and other structures. The terrain information would be lost when resampling fine grids into coarse grids such that the modeling results may not reflect the reality of flow propagation properly. This paper intends to solve this dilemma with the shallow water equations modified by introducing extra parameters to account for the reduction in storage and conveyance due to the existence of buildings. To reflect the key feature of grids separated by a building inside, one single coarse grid cell may have two or more porosity parameters applied to calculate the flow path. The modified shallow water equations would be coupled with convective-diffusion equation to simulate the transport and distribution of pollutants in flood events. We applied the new model to two case studies and the results show the proposed model has significant improvement in both the computing cost and accuracy.
