Abstract:Understanding the hydrologically-driven erosion processes that control sediment detachment, transport and deposition on upland surfaces is a major challenge in watershed erosion modeling. This paper presents a sediment transport algorithm with a coupled 2-D surface and 3-D subsurface flow model that can simulate surface responses and also consider subsurface contributions during a rainfall event, hi the model, the sediment transport algorithm utilizes the non-equilibrium concept to simulate both erosion and deposition. The flow and sediment transport equations are discretized using the finite volume method and solved implicitly using the Picard iteration method. The flow and sediment transport are computed in a decoupled way; that is, the depth-averaged 2-D sediment model is solved after the flow field simulation at each time step. The developed sediment transport model is tested using measurement data from published experiments. The ability to simulate sediment transport due to rainfall in a watershed is demonstrated.
A Physically-Based Integrated Numerical Model for Flow, Upland Erosion, and Contaminant Transport in Surface-Subsurface Systems

Abstract:This paper presents a physically-based integrated hydrologic model that can simulate the rainfall-induced 2D surface water flow, 3D variably saturated subsurface flow, upland soil erosion and transport, and contaminant transport in the surface-subsurface system of a watershed. The model couples surface and subsurface flows based on the assumption of continuity conditions of pressure head and exchange flux at the ground, considering infiltration and evapotranspiration. The upland rill/interrill soil erosion and transport are simulated using a non-equilibrium transport model. Contaminant transport in the integrated surface and subsurface domains is simulated using advection-diffusion equations with mass changes due to sediment sorption and desorption and exchanges between two domains due to infiltration, diffusion, and bed change. The model requires no special treatments at the interface of upland areas and streams and is suitable for wetland areas and agricultural watersheds with shallow streams.

Abstract:Wind-driven rain (WDR) in the built environment is a complex multiscale phenomenon. Wind flows in complex urban environment and rain events of various intensities may lead to very different rain deposition distributions within the city. Proper modeling of WDR is required as moisture is a main cause of material degradation in the built environment but also as understanding the water cycle in the urban environment is essential to provide solutions for the urban heat island, amongst others. What are the main aspects to be taken into account to predict wind-driven rain? How should such aspects be considered and modeled? Is it possible and relevant to predict in detail the moisture loads due to rain in complex systems as cities? This paper answers these questions from a multiscale perspective combining modeling and experimental work. The different scales relevant for accurate estimation of wind-driven rain in the built environment are presented. Rain deposition on complex geometries can be modeled by CFD, taking into account turbulent dispersion. Such modeling provides the impact velocity and angle of attack for each droplet size at any location on the urban surfaces. Using this information and the structure of the surface, the fate of the rain droplets can be predicted, namely whether it splashes, bounces or simply spreads.

Abstract:Changes in rainfall amounts and patterns have been observed and are expected to continue in the near future with potentially significant ecological and societal consequences. Modelling vegetation responses to changes in rainfall is thus crucial to project water and carbon cycles in the future. In this study, we present the results of a new model-data intercomparison project, where we tested the ability of 10 terrestrial biosphere models to reproduce the observed sensitivity of ecosystem productivity to rainfall changes at 10 sites across the globe, in nine of which, rainfall exclusion and/or irrigation experiments had been performed. The key results are as follows: (a) Inter-model variation is generally large and model agreement varies with timescales. In severely water-limited sites, models only agree on the interannual variability of evapotranspiration and to a smaller extent on gross primary productivity. In more mesic sites, model agreement for both water and carbon fluxes is typically higher on fine (daily-monthly) timescales and reduces on longer (seasonal-annual) scales. (b) Models on average overestimate the relationship between ecosystem productivity and mean rainfall amounts across sites (in space) and have a low capacity in reproducing the temporal (interannual) sensitivity of vegetation productivity to annual rainfall at a given site, even though observation uncertainty is comparable to inter-model variability. (c) Most models reproduced the sign of the observed patterns in productivity changes in rainfall manipulation experiments but had a low capacity in reproducing the observed magnitude of productivity changes. Models better reproduced the observed productivity responses due to rainfall exclusion than addition. (d) All models attribute ecosystem productivity changes to the intensity of vegetation stress and peak leaf area, whereas the impact of the change in growing season length is negligible. The relative contribution of the peak leaf area and vegetation stress intensity was highly variable among models.

Abstract:New 100 m2 urban drainage facility equipped with a rainfall simulator and a sewer network. Rainfall‐runoff tests involving flow over roofs, streets, and sewer system. Open‐access experimental dataset. Numerical models are currently the main tool used to simulate the effects of urban flooding. The validation of these models requires thorough and accurate observed data in order to test their performance. The current study presents a series of laboratory experiments in a large‐scale urban drainage physical facility of approximately 100 m2 that includes roofs, streets, inlets, manholes and sewers. The facility is equipped with a rainfall simulator as well as a surface runoff and pipe inflows generators. The experiments were divided in two sets. In Set 1 the surface runoff was generated exclusively by the rainfall input, while in Set 2 the rainfall simulator was used in combination with the runoff generators. In all the tests the water discharge was measured at points on the inlets, roofs, and outfall. The water depth at different locations of the facility was also measured. The experimental tests were replicated numerically using the urban drainage model Iber‐SWMM. Experimental results show that, even in a relatively small catchment the peaks in the hydrographs generated at each element of the facility during intermittent rainfalls are significantly attenuated at the catchment outlet. The agreement between the experimental and numerical results show that there are some differences in the hydrographs generated at each element, but that these differences compensate each other and disappear at the outfall. The results generated provide the research community with a thorough and high‐resolution dataset obtained under controlled laboratory conditions in a large‐scale urban drainage facility, something which has not previously been available.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents a dataset obtained from hydraulic and sediment transport experiments performed in a full-scale urban drainage physical model of 36 m 2 . The study seeks to accurately measure sediment mobilization through the different parts of the model (surface, gully pots and pipe system), also obtaining a precise characterization of water flow and using realistic rainfall simulator to ensure the transferability of the results. Three different rain intensities and five sediment granulometries were tested in 6 hydraulic and 23 wash-off and sediment transport experiments. The following experimental data were produced: surface elevations and 2D runoff velocities measured by visualization techniques; surface and in-pipe water depths; flow discharges, total suspended solids concentrations and particle size distribution at the entrance of the gully pots and at the pipe system outlet; and sediment mass balances. This data is optimal for developing and validating wash-off and sediment transport formulations in urban drainage models, towards better treatment and management techniques for minimizing the impact of urban surface pollutants on the environments of towns and cities.

Abstract:This study proposes a modelling framework of integrated one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic modelling to evaluate the effectiveness of sponge city construction at community scale. Through a case study in Zhuhai, we integrate Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) and Cellular Automata Dual-DraInagE Simulation (CADDIES) 2D model to analyze the rainfall-runoff process involving green infrastructures. SWMM is applied to analyze the change of surface runoff control effects before and after the implementation of sponge city low impact development (LID) facilities, and CADDIES is adopted to simulate the propagation of excess runoff on the surface. The results show that the LID facilities can effectively reduce the runoff volume of small and medium-sized rainfall events since the maximum runoff reduction rate is 94.4%. For long-term operation, the LID can capture 52.9% of annual rainfall volume and reduce annual runoff by 28.0%. However, the CADDIES 2D model simulations indicate that LID facilities have little effect on flood alleviation in specific regions under extreme rainfall conditions. In addition, we compared the modelling performance using four different terrain Digital Elevation Model (DEM) resolutions and found that 1 m terrain DEM resolution can produce comparable results to 0.25 m DEM with a fraction of computational time. We also find that the MIKE FLOOD model and the integrated model of SWMM and CADDIES 2D can obtain similar simulation results, the p-value = 0.09 which is >0.05, but SWMM-CADDIES integrated model is more suitable for small-scale simulation. Abstract:Climate change and rapid urbanisation have intensified urban flooding. Flood models constructed using hydrological and hydrodynamic approaches are crucial tools for simulating and regulating urban flooding processes. Urban flooding arises from the interplay of various physical processes in urban water systems, influenced by heterogeneous urban surfaces, underground structures, and intricate river networks influencing surface flow, which must be considered in flood models. For coastal cities with intricate drainage systems, the disasters of combined rainstorms and tidal flooding can be mitigated through river scheduling and real-time control of hydraulic structures. However, a lack of research on the effectiveness of flood regulations limits the application of flood models. This study proposes a flood modelling approach oriented towards the coupling of multiphysics processes, achieving a comprehensive simulation and regulation of the flood process. A surface flood control model was created by coupling hydrological and hydrodynamic processes using the Storm Water Management Model and the orthogonal storage cell model, enabled by data exchange synchronisation technology. Subsequently, the model's accuracy was validated using observed rainstorm events, identifying drainage system overflows and land surface inundation. Finally, the developed model was applied to analyse the enhancing effect of tides on rainstorm-induced flooding and the impact of various control scenarios. This study offers theoretical direction for large-scale urban flood modelling and model development, offering significant references for revisiting urban planning and formulating flood prevention strategies under the joint impact of rainstorms and tides.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to understand the rainfall–runoff processes of the meso-scale Chemoga and Jedeb catchments in the Abay/Upper Blue Nile basin, Ethiopia. Distributed conceptual modelling and different field data were used in the modelling process. Three different model representations with varying model complexity were employed to test the appropriate model structure. Parameters were conditioned within the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) framework using both discharge and environmental isotope information indicating the ratio of new and old water during the wet season. It was demonstrated that the two catchments cannot be modelled equally well with the same model structure due to differences in the rainfall–runoff processes caused by different amounts of wetlands leading to different hydrological responses. Hence, a single model structure for the entire Abay/Upper Blue Nile cannot do justice to all the dominant hydrological processes in the various sub-catchments in the basin. Editor D. Abstract:Dissolved pollutants in stormwater are a main contributor to water pollution in urban environments. However, many existing transport models are semi-empirical and only consider one-dimensional flows, which limit their predictive capacity. Combining the shallow water and the advection-diffusion equations, a two-dimensional physically based model is developed for dissolved pollutant transport by adopting the concept of a 'control layer'. A series of laboratory experiments has been conducted to validate the proposed model, taking into account the effects of buildings and intermittent rainfalls. The predictions are found to be in good agreement with experimental observations, which supports the assumption that the depth of the control layer is constant. Based on the validated model, a parametric study is conducted, focusing on the characteristics of the pollutant distribution and transport rate over the depth. The hyetograph, including the intensity, duration and intermittency, of rainfall event has a significant influence on the pollutant transport rates. The depth of the control layer, rainfall intensity, surface roughness and area length are dominant factors that affect the dissolved pollutant transport. Finally, several perspectives of the new pollutant transport model are discussed. This study contributes to an in-depth understanding of the dissolved pollutant transport processes on impermeable surfaces and urban stormwater management.

Abstract:Hydrological processes are complex and nonlinear dynamic processes. In recent simulation study, most of the processes are generalized and established on the base of ideal model in lump model and even in distributed hydrological model. In order to simulate rainfall runoff process, more deep exploration for its mechanism and efficient mathematic model for its description are both required. In this paper, concept of Dynamic Digital Terrain Model (DDTM) is presented. The main idea of DDTM is establishing a lot of calculation rules, which simulate characteristics of terrain surface process in some degree, by organization these rules, the complex and nonlinear process on terrain surface can be simulated. Hydrological rainfall runoff process is taken as a typical example to illustrate the principal of DDTM in the experiment. The result shows that it's feasible to using DTM simulate terrain surface process.
Simulation of green roof runoff under different substrate depths and vegetation covers by coupling a simple conceptual and a physically based hydrological model

Abstract:In spite of the well-known green roof benefits, their widespread adoption in the management practices of urban drainage systems requires the use of adequate analytical and modelling tools. In the current study, green roof runoff modeling was accomplished by developing, testing, and jointly using a simple conceptual model and a physically based numerical simulation model utilizing HYDRUS-1D software. The use of such an approach combines the advantages of the conceptual model, namely simplicity, low computational requirements, and ability to be easily integrated in decision support tools with the capacity of the physically based simulation model to be easily transferred in conditions and locations other than those used for calibrating and validating it. The proposed approach was evaluated with an experimental dataset that included various green roof covers (either succulent plants - Sedum sediforme, or xerophytic plants - Origanum onites, or bare substrate without any vegetation) and two substrate depths (either 8 cm or 16 cm). Both the physically based and the conceptual models matched very closely the observed hydrographs. In general, the conceptual model performed better than the physically based simulation model but the overall performance of both models was sufficient in most cases as it is revealed by the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency index which was generally greater than 0.70. Finally, it was showcased how a physically based and a simple conceptual model can be jointly used to allow the use of the simple conceptual model for a wider set of conditions than the available experimental data and in order to support green roof design.

Abstract:Recently many runoff models based on cellular automaton (CA) have been developed to simulate floods; however, the existing models cannot be readily applied to complex urban environments. This study proposes a novel rainfall-runoff model based on CA (RRCA) to simulate inundation. Its main contributions include a fine runoff generation process that considers 12 urban scenarios rather than a single land use type and the confluence process determined by the new transition rules considering water supply and demand (WS-WD transition rules). RRCA was compared with another CA based flood model (E2DCA). With the benchmark model, the results showed that there was good agreement, with an R-squared greater than 0.9, and that RRCA was more sensitive to waterlogging levels than E2DCA. Furthermore, the simulated vegetation interception, infiltration and drainage processes had varying degrees of impact on waterlogging. Corresponding measures can be taken in urban flood management according to the identification of areas experiencing drainage difficulties.

Abstract:The objective of this three-part work is to formulate and rigorously analyse a number of reduced mathematical models that are nevertheless capable of describing the hydrology at the scale of a river basin (i.e. catchment). Coupled surface and subsurface flows are considered. In this second part, we construct a benchmark catchment scenario and investigate the effects of parameters within their typical ranges. Previous research on coupled surface–subsurface models have focused on numerical simulations of site-specific catchments. Here, our focus is broad, emphasising the study of general solutions to the mathematical models, and their dependencies on dimensionless parameters. This study provides a foundation based on the examination of a geometrically simple three-dimensional benchmark scenario. We develop a non-dimensional coupled surface–subsurface model and extract the key dimensionless parameters. Asymptotic methods demonstrate under what conditions the model can be reduced to a two-dimensional form, where the principal groundwater and overland flows occur in the hillslope direction. Numerical solutions provide guidance on the validity of such reductions, and demonstrate the parametric dependencies corresponding to a strong rainfall event.

Abstract:Urban floods/inundation disasters are becoming a prominent problem affecting urban public security due to the impact of global climate change and rapid urbanization. Therefore, research on urban flooding via numerical modelling has important practical significance. According to hydrological and hydrodynamic theories and methods, based on the Storm Water Management Model and the self-developed Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) Accelerated Surface Water Flow and Associated Transport (GAST) model, we explore the best coupling mode, and take Xiaozhai block in Xi'an, China, as the research object to study, through the selected mode, the impact of the change of local land use type on surface inundation and pipe network. The results show that the hydrology–hydrodynamic coupling model (G-S) is more realistic, and its simulation results are more in line with the actual urban flood processes. The results are expected to provide help to other experts and scholars in future model coupling research.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an approach that combines data-driven and physical modelling for predicting the runoff occurrence and volume at catchment scale. With that aim, we first estimated the runoff volume from recorded storms aided by the Green-Ampt infiltration model. Then, we used machine learning algorithms, namely LightGBM (LGBM) and Deep Neural Network (DNN), to predict the outputs of the physical model fed on a set of atmospheric variables (relative humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, and wind velocity) collected before or immediately after the beginning of the storm. Results for a small urban catchment in Madrid show DNN performed better in predicting the runoff occurrence and volume. Moreover, enriching the input primary atmospheric variables with auxiliary variables (e.g., storm intensity data recorded during the first hour, or rain volume and intensity estimates obtained from auxiliary regression methods) largely increased the model performance. We show in this manuscript data-driven algorithms shaped by physical criteria can be successfully generated by allowing the data-driven algorithm learn from the output of physical models. It represents a novel approach for physics-informed data-driven algorithms shifting from common practices in hydrological modelling through machine learning.

Abstract:Abstract. Hydrological extremes affect societies and ecosystems around the world in many ways, stressing the need to make reliable predictions using hydrological models. However, several hydrological models can be selected to simulate extreme events. A difference in hydrological model structure results in a spread in the simulation of extreme runoff events. We investigated the impact of different model structures on the magnitude and timing of simulated extreme high- and low-flow events, by combining two state-of-the-art approaches; a modular modelling framework (FUSE) and large ensemble meteorological simulations. This combination of methods created the opportunity to isolate the impact of specific hydrological process formulations at long return periods without relying on statistical models. We showed that the impact of hydrological model structure was larger for the simulation of low-flow compared to high-flow events and varied between the four evaluated climate zones. In cold and temperate climate zones, the magnitude and timing of extreme runoff events were significantly affected by different parameter sets and hydrological process formulations, such as evaporation. The impact of hydrological model structures on extreme runoff events was smaller in the arid and tropical climate zones. This novel combination of approaches provided insights into the importance of specific hydrological processes formulations in different climate zones, which can support adequate model selection for the simulation of extreme runoff events.

Abstract:Abstract. Hydrological models are extensively used in urban water management, development and evaluation of future scenarios and research activities. There is a growing interest in the development of fully distributed and grid-based models. However, some complex questions related to scale effects are not yet fully understood and still remain open issues in urban hydrology. In this paper we propose a two-step investigation framework to illustrate the extent of scale effects in urban hydrology. First, fractal tools are used to highlight the scale dependence observed within distributed data input into urban hydrological models. Then an intensive multi-scale modelling work is carried out to understand scale effects on hydrological model performance. Investigations are conducted using a fully distributed and physically based model, Multi-Hydro, developed at Ecole des Ponts ParisTech. The model is implemented at 17 spatial resolutions ranging from 100 to 5 m. Results clearly exhibit scale effect challenges in urban hydrology modelling. The applicability of fractal concepts highlights the scale dependence observed within distributed data. Patterns of geophysical data change when the size of the observation pixel changes. The multi-scale modelling investigation confirms scale effects on hydrological model performance. Results are analysed over three ranges of scales identified in the fractal analysis and confirmed through modelling. This work also discusses some remaining issues in urban hydrology modelling related to the availability of high-quality data at high resolutions, and model numerical instabilities as well as the computation time requirements. The main findings of this paper enable a replacement of traditional methods of “model calibration” by innovative methods of “model resolution alteration” based on the spatial data variability and scaling of flows in urban hydrology.

Development and Application of a Physically-Based Distributed Rainfall-Runoff Model

Abstract:A physically-based distributed rainfall-runoff model is developed to simulate the hydrological processes of watershed during rainfall period for considering the spatial variability of terrain,the land use,the soil type and the rainfall distribution.This model discretizes watershed into a number of square elements,and classifies them into hill-slope and channel ones based on the water flow properties.Each hill-slope grid element has model components for interception,infiltration,overland flow and soil water lateral flow,and each channel element has model components of channel flow.The infiltration and excess rainfall on each hillslope element are calculated using the Green-Ampt infiltration equation.Soil lateral flow is based on the(Darcy's) law and the continuity equation,the overland and channel flows are described by one dimensional kinematic wave approximation to the St Venant equations,and the implicit finite differential scheme is used to solve these equations.This model has the characteristics of simple structure,the processbased equations and the meaningful physical parameters.Most parameters of the model can be derived from the DEM,the digital soil type and the land use data, a few sensitive ones can be determined by the calibration.The model calibration and test are performed in huangtuling watershed(17.9?km~2),a sub-basin of Yongjiang river in Zhejiang province,south-eastern China,and applied to Jiaokou watershed(259?km~2),another sub-basin of Yongjiang river,the results are promising.
