Abstract:The rational design of high-efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is of significance in electrochemical energy conversion. However, such low-cost but highly active electrocatalysts remain poorly developed because of the daunting synthetic challenge. Here, the synthesis of NiSe2/Fe3O4 nanotubes via a facile self-templating strategy, which manifests unique tetragonal morphology, asymmetric hollow interior, and unusual but adaptable heteroepitaxy structure, is reported. Benefiting from sufficient active sites and their improved activity around the heterointerface, accompanied by the good conductivity, the NiSe2/Fe3O4 nanotubes exhibit as a superior OER electrocatalyst, which affords the current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a very small overpotential of 199 mV, high attainable current density beyond 200 mA cm(-2), and mass activity of 984.5 A g(-1), as well as excellent stability for 100 h in the alkaline media. This work provides a unique synthetic pathway to fabricate superior OER electrocatalysts by optimizing their composition and architecture.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a family of van der Waals layered materials exhibiting unique electronic, optical, magnetic and transport properties. Their technological potentials hinge critically on the ability to achieve controlled fabrication of desirable nanostructures, such as nanoribbons and nanodots. To date, nanodots/nanoislands have been regularly observed, while controlled fabrication of TMD nanoribbons remains challenging. Here we report a bottom-up fabrication of MoSe 2 nanoribbons using molecular beam epitaxy, via an unexpected temperature-induced morphological phase transition from the nanodot to nanoribbon regime. Such nanoribbons are of zigzag nature, characterized by distinct chemical and electronic properties along the edges. The phase space for nanoribbon growth is narrowly defined by proper Se:Mo ratios, as corroborated experimentally using different Se fluxes, and supported theoretically using first-principles calculations that establish the crucial role of the morphological reconstruction of the bare Mo-terminated edge. The growth mechanism revealed should be applicable to other TMD systems.
Selenium Nanotubes Synthesized by A Novel Solution Phase Approach

Abstract:In this communication, we demonstrate a new approach to well-controlled growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes, which comprises a hydrothermal process and a following sonication. The hydrothermal process was used to derive Se particles of trigonal phase. In the subsequent sonication, if the Se particles were large enough, they were first broken, and then aggregated along the circumferential edge of the gap thus forming Se nanotubes; conversely, the Se particles were not broken and then aligned into nanowires. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) proved that both the Se nanotubes and nanowires were single crystalline in nature and <100> oriented. Based on a series of the TEM observation, a phenomenological mechanism for the elucidation of the controllable growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes is presented.
Controlled synthesis and excellent magnetism of ferrimagnetic NiFe2Se4 nanostructures

Abstract:3d transition metal chalcogenides have attracted much attention due to their unique magnetic properties. Although various Cr, V, and Fe-based chalcogenides have been fabricated recently, the limited Curie temperature (T C) still hinders their practical application. Based on the structural and magnetic advantages of MFe2O4 and Fe3Se4, we developed a one-pot solution synthesis method for the fabrication of NiFe2Se4 nanostructures with structural continuity, to facilitate the investigation of their magnetic properties. Notably, the morphology of NiFe2Se4 can be controlled from nano-rods to nano-platelets by controlling the growth direction. The coercivity (H C) of NiFe2Se4 with nano-cactus structure exhibits a maximum of 12.77 kOe at 5 K. The coercivity of ferrimagnetic NiFe2Se4 nano-platelets can be further adjusted to 1.52 kOe at room temperature. These results show that the magnetic properties of NiFe2Se4 can be significantly modified by controlling their morphologies. We also extend the method to the synthesis of CoFe2Se4 nano-cactus with an ultrahigh coercivity of 17.85 kOe at 5 K. Obviously, the synthesis strategy and their excellent magnetic properties of MFe2Se4 have sparked interest in ternary transition metal selenides as potential hard magnetic materials.

Abstract:As one of the Ⅷ—Ⅵ compounds,FeSe2 has the band gap of 1.0 eV,which is a kind of important inorganic semiconductor materials.It can be widely used in the components of electronic,optical,optoelectronic and electronic spin.Selenium dioxide is used as selenium source while N,N-dimethyl formamide as complexing agent and reducing agent,with potassium hydroxide as an adjustment to the reaction environment.The different morphology of FeSe2 nanomaterials can be achieved by means of hydrothermal method with different surfactant assisted synthesis technology.This method is easy to operate and can be used for the preparation of other nanostructures of transition metal selenide.The samples are characterized with XRD,FESEM and so on.The magnetic test demonstrates that it is a soft ferromagnetic material.
Controlled Synthesis of PbSe Nanotubes by Solvothermal Transformation from Selenium Nanotubes

Abstract:PbSe nanotubes were successfully synthesized by a reactive template approach via solvothermal transformation of trigonal selenium (t-Se) nanotubes in ethylene glycol. It was revealed that a relatively high reaction temperature (e. g., 200 degrees C), adequate ascorbic acid, and proper lead source were crucial for preparing PbSe nanotubes through shape-preserved transformation of t-Se nanotubes. Moreover, novel Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes consisting of Se nanotubes covered with a PbSe sheath were obtained by shortening the reaction time and subsequent removal of the inner Se nanotubes resulted in the formation of thin-walled PbSe nanotubes (less than 20 nm in wall thickness). On the basis of the experimental observations, a plausible mechanism for the formation of PbSe nanotubes as well as Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes was proposed. Furthermore, preliminary electrochemical measurements showed that the prepared PbSe nanotubes exhibited a good electrochemical activity.

Abstract:This article describes a rapid, solution-phase approach to the large-scale synthesis of faceted single-crystalline Se nanotubes, in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectrography, differential scanning calorimetry analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The growth mechanism of the Se nanotubes was investigated by a series of experiments, and the rationality of the faceted morphology model for the Se nanotubes was demonstrated from the energetics and geometry. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior of the Se nanotubes was studied by voltammetric techniques.

Abstract:Exploring new-type 2D magnetic materials with high magnetic transition temperature and robust air stability has attracted wide attention for developing innovative spintronic devices. Recently, intercalation of native metal atoms into the van der Waals gaps of 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has been developed to form 2D non-layered magnetic TMDs, while only succeeded in limited systems (e.g., Cr2 S3 , Cr5 Te8 ). Herein, composition-controllable syntheses of 2D non-layered iron selenide nanosheets (25% Fe-intercalated triclinic Fe5 Se8 and 50% Fe-intercalated monoclinic Fe3 Se4 ) are firstly reported, via a robust chemical vapor deposition strategy. Specifically, the 2D Fe5 Se8 exhibits intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic property, which is explained by the change of electron spin states from layered 1T'-FeSe2 to non-layered Fe-intercalated Fe5 Se8 based on density functional theory calculations. In contrast, the ultrathin Fe3 Se4 presents novel metallic features comparable with that of metallic TMDs. This work hereby sheds light on the composition-controllable synthesis and fundamental property exploration of 2D self-intercalation induced novel TMDs compounds, by propelling their application explorations in nanoelectronics and spintronics-related fields.
Superconducting Two-Dimensional FeSe Grown on the Fe-Enriched Interface.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) tetragonal FeSe has sparked extensive research interest owing to its tunable superconductivity, providing valuable insights into the design of high-temperature superconductors. Currently, the intricate Fe-Se phase diagram poses a challenge to the controlled synthesis of superconducting 2D FeSe in a pure tetragonal phase. Here, we exploit the ion-exchange property of fluorophlogopite mica to devise a straightforward approach for the phase-controlled synthesis of tetragonal FeSe on an Fe-enriched mica surface within a molten salt environment. This method successfully produces highly crystalline FeSe in a pure tetragonal phase with adjustable thickness. We investigated the surface composition of the postgrowth mica substrate using various microscopic and spectroscopic characterizations to highlight the importance of the Fe-enriched growth interface in the phase-selective synthesis of 2D tetragonal FeSe. The obtained 2D FeSe exhibited 2D superconductivity, comparable to that of FeSe mechanically exfoliated from bulk crystals, confirming the high quality of our samples. Beyond tetragonal FeSe, 2D antiferromagnetic FeTe and superconducting FeSxSeyTe1-x-y have been phase-selectively synthesized via this approach. Our study elucidates the significance of the growth interface on the phase-selective synthesis of 2D materials and presents potential opportunities for the phase-controlled synthesis of 2D multiphase materials via the rational design of the growth interface.

Abstract:Ultra-long single-crystalline trigonal selenium submicrotubes were synthesized using a facile one-step solution-phase approach with the assistance of nonionic surfactant Polyoxyethylene(20)sorbitan monolaurate (Tween-20), which turned out to be significant for the formation of ultra-long Se submicrotubes. XRD, Raman, SEM, and TEM were adopted to characterize the morphology, structure and phase composition of the as-prepared Se products. It was found that the length of the obtained Se submicrotubes was over 100 pm. By variation of the experimental parameters, the t-Se spheres, nanowires, and broken microtubes can be prepared. The possible growth mechanism of the ultra-long selenium submicrotubes was explained. In addition, we have also demonstrated that the synthesized Ultra-long t-Se submicrotubes using the Tween-20-assisted approach can electrochemically charge and discharge with the high capacity of 265 mAh/g (corresponding to 0.97 wt % hydrogen in SWNTs) under normal atmosphere at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry was adopted to investigate the adsorption-ox idation behavior of ultra-long selenium submicrotubes. It was observed that the morphology of the synthesized selenium products had a remarkable influence on their capacity of electrochemical hydrogen storage. These differences in hydrogen storage capacity are likely due to the size and density of tubes as well as the microcosmic morphology of different Se samples. The as-obtained ultralong Se submicrotubes are expected to find wide applications in hydrogen storage, high-energy batteries, and optoelectronic, biologic, and catalytic fields as well as in the studies of structure-property relationships. This simple Tween-assisted approach might be extended to the preparations of one-dimensional nanostructures of tellurium and other anisotropic materials.

Abstract:We report a robust method for synthesis of monodisperse PbSeTe single ternary alloy and core/shell heterostructured nanocubes, respectively. The key synthetic strategy to produce such different classes of nanocubes is to precisely control the time of reaction and successive growth. The crystallinity, shape/size distributions, structural characteristics, and compositions of as-prepared nanocubes, both ternary alloy and core/shell, were carefully studied. A plausible growth mechanism for developing each type of lead chalcogenide nanocubes is proposed. These delicately designed PbSeTe nanoscale architectures offer tunable compositions in PbSeTe ternary alloy and nano-interfaces in core/shell nanocubes, which are the critical factors in controlling thermal conductivity for applications in thermoelectrics.

Abstract:Fe7Se8 polyhedra with high-index facets and Fe7Se8 nanorods can be selectively synthesized by a solvothermal reaction in a mixed solvent of diethylenetriamine (DETA) and deionized water (DIW). It is found that the morphologies of Fe7Se8 nanocrystals can be effectively controlled by adjusting the volume ratio of DETA and DIW. The unusual polyhedral crystals are bounded by two {001} and twelve {012} facets. The intrinsic properties of Fe7Se8 nanocrystals have been investigated. Magnetic measurements indicate that the obtained polyhedra and nanorods show a weak ferromagnetic ordering at room temperature. In particular, a new photoluminescence emission at 403 nm from the Fe7Se8 nanocrystals has been observed. The described solvothermal reaction in a mixed solvent may be extended to the synthesis of other transition-metal chalcogenide crystals with controlled shape, facets, and structure, which may bring new functionalities.

Abstract:Single crystalline copper selenide (Cu2-xSe) nanocrystals (NCs) with well-defined octahedral morphology are successfully synthesized by a colloidal hot-solution injection method from the reaction of anhydrous CuCl with Ph2Se2 under argon flow, in which 1-octadecene (ODE) and oleylamine (OAm) are used as solvent and surfactant, respectively. The Cu2-xSe octahedral nanostructures are characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, SAED, EDS, FT-IR and XPS and it is found that they are in the cubic phase with high quality. The growth process of the nanostructures is investigated and it is noted that reaction temperature, reaction time and capping surfactant OAm play significant roles in controlling the morphologies of the final products. Meanwhile, the current-voltage (I-V) behavior of the as-prepared octahedral Cu2-xSe nanostructures is explored for the first time and it is found that the Cu2-xSe octahedral nanostructures are promising candidates for application in photodetection and related areas.

Abstract:Recently, the biomolecule-assisted synthesis method has been a new and promising focus in the preparation of various nanomaterials. But current works mainly focus on the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and nanowires using macro-biomolecules (e.g. virus, protein and DNA) as templates in the presence of a reducing agent. Beta-carotene, one of the most common bio-antioxidants, can be oxidized to form species with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic ends, which can provide an in situ soft template for the synthesis of nanomaterials. Herein, a simple beta-carotene-assisted method was developed for the first time to synthesize t-Se nanowires and nanoribbons with high crystallinity. We demonstrate that beta-carotene serves as not only the reducing agent, but also an in situ template in the preparation of Se one-dimensional nanostructures. It is found that the growth mechanism of Se nanomaterials is different from the familiar sphere–wire process. A novel flake-cracking mechanism is proposed. By this biomolecule-assisted route, Te one-dimensional nanostructures and Pd nanowires were also fabricated. The assisted-biomolecule in our method may be spread to carotenoids and other antioxidants, and thus broaden the application fields of biomolecules. Our preliminary investigations have shown that the facile, solution-phase biomolecule-assisted method can be potentially extended to the preparation of other low-dimensional nanostructures. The synthesized t-Se nanowires and nanoribbons may serve as templates to generate other tubular functional nanomaterials and find applications in the studies of structure–property relationships as well as in the fabrication of nanoscale optoelectronic devices.
In situ controllable synthesis of magnetite nanocrystals/CoSe2 hybrid nanobelts and their enhanced catalytic performance

Abstract:Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes of ca 5.3, 6.6, and 9.8 nm can be successfully loaded on the surface of CoSe2-DETA hybrid nanobelts via a facile thermal reduction process in polyol solution. The resulting multifunctional nanocomposites are superparamagnetic at room temperature. Most interestingly, the electrocatalytic activity for the O-2 reduction reaction (ORR) of the constructed Fe3O4-decorated CoSe2 nanobelts yield a decent enhancement compared with original CoSe2-DETA catalysts, i.e., the onset potential and current density show 1.01 mA cm(-2) and 0.05 V increase at 0.3 V, 1600 rpm, respectively. Additionally, the number of electrons transferred (n) increases from 2.1 to 3.6 after integrating with Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The work described here has provided a promising route to the design and development of new Pt-free catalysts with high-performance by introducing other cheap NPs.
Morphology Control of CdSe Submicrostructures with High Hierarchy in Solution

Abstract:A series of CdSe submicrostructures, including rods, fringy structures, and fasciculate tubes with high hierarchy, have been selectively prepared by a facile one-step solution-based strategy without using any organic surfactants, simply by changing the feeding quantity of aqueous ammonia (25% NH3). The growth mechanism based on kinetic control is discussed for the selective formation of the CdSe submicrostructures with special morphologies. In the present reaction system, ammonia plays a dual role: providing an alkaline medium for the formation of Se2- and acting as a coordinating agent for cadmium cations in either the solution or the solid phase. The feeding quantity of aqueous ammonia greatly influences the rate of formation of the Se2- anion, and thus determines the final morphology of CdSe crystals. Compared with previous methods of preparing CdSe structures, this concise and novel one-step route has special advantages, suggesting a new path for convenient synthesis of CdSe materials with novel morphology. Abstract:One-dimensional metal chalcogenide nanostructures are important candidates for many technological applications such as photovoltaic and thermoelectric devices. However, the design and synthesis of one-dimensional metal chalcogenide nanostructured materials with controllable components and properties remain a challenge. We report a general chemical transformation process for the synthesis of more than 45 kinds of one-dimensional alloyed/hybrid metal chalcogenide nanostructures inherited from mother template Te x Se y @Se core-shell nanowires with tunable compositions. As many as nine types of monometal chalcogenide alloy nanowires (including AgSeTe, HgSeTe, CuSeTe, BiSeTe, PbSeTe, CdSeTe, SbSeTe, NiSeTe, and CoSeTe) can be synthesized. Alloyed and hybrid nanowires integrated with two or more alloyed metal chalcogenide phases can also be prepared. The compositions of all of these metal chalcogenide nanowires are tunable within a wide range. This protocol provides a new general route for the controllable synthesis of a new generation of one-dimensional metal chalcogenide nanostructures.
Two‐Dimensional CuSe Nanosheets with Microscale Lateral Size: Synthesis and Template‐Assisted Phase Transformation

Abstract:AbstractSemiconducting nanosheets with microscale lateral size are attractive building blocks for the fabrication of electronic and optoelectronic devices. The phase‐controlled chemical synthesis of semiconducting nanosheets is of particular interest, because their intriguing properties are not only related to their size and shape, but also phase‐dependent. Herein, a facile method for the synthesis of phase‐pure, microsized, two‐dimensional (2D) CuSe nanosheets with an average thickness of approximately 5 nm is demonstrated. These hexagonal‐phased CuSe nanosheets were transformed into cubic‐phased Cu2−xSe nanosheets with the same morphology simply by treatment with heat in the presence of CuI cations. The phase transformation, proposed to be a template‐assisted process, can be extended to other systems, such as CuS and Cu1.97S nanoplates. Our study offers a new method for the phase‐controlled preparation of 2D nanomaterials, which are not readily accessible by conventional wet‐chemical methods.
