Abstract:In order to prepare a composite phase change material (PCM) with suitable phase transition temperature, strong temperature control performance, good latent heat properties, and low cost for incorporation into concrete, the goal is to control temperature cracks, and endow the building structure with temperature regulation capabilities through phase change. In this study, capric acid (CA), myristic acid (MA) and stearic acid (SA) were used as PCMs. Firstly, based on theoretical calculations, a ternary eutectic mixture of CA-MA-SA with a mass ratio of 67.16:22.98:9.86 was successfully prepared. Subsequently, a new composite PCM was created using a melt blending technique, incorporating nano-SiO2 2 as a supporting material. The comprehensive characterization results from FT-IR, SEM, XRD, DSC and TG indicate that nano-SiO2 2 interacts with CA-MA-SA through its porous structure and capillary action, as well as surface tension, rather than through any chemical interaction, when 65% of CA-MA-SA is adsorbed in nano-silica, the melting temperature and latent heat of the composite PCM are 19.23 degrees C and 97.82 J/g, respectively. Without any leakage of molten CA-MA-SA. This material exhibits a favorable temperature for phase transition and possesses a high amount of latent heat, making it a promising candidate for use in construction projects. Additionally, the composite PCM shows remarkable thermal stability after 200 phase change cycles, which not only lowers building energy usage but also conserves energy, making it ideal for broad use in civil engineering.

Abstract:The different MSEP/SA composite phase change materials were prepared by direct impregnation method with SEP-v, SEP-p, SEP-f as supporting material. The thermal stability of the composite phase change materials was analyzed and the differences in the thermal properties and thermal reliability were compared, and provided reference for the study of different SEP to adsorb stearic acid (SA). The results indicated that there is no chemical reaction during the preparation of the composite PCMs. SEP-f has great advantages as a supporting material and its composite (65SEP-f/SA) has a good leak-proof performance with remaining mass ratio is above 99% for leakage test of 50 h. Besides, melting and freezing latent heat of three composite PCMs are similar, For 65SEP-f/SA, the melting latent heat is 76.10 J g−1 corresponds to the phase change temperature of 344.15 K and the freezing latent heat is 75.59 J g−1 corresponds to the phase change temperature of 336.85 K. The 65SEP-f/SA has the highest thermal conductivity of 0.9460 W m−1 K−1. It can be conducted that 65SEP-f/SA have great application potential in the field for low temperature phase change energy storage.

Abstract:In this study, stearic acid (SA)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) composites with different mass ratios were prepared by mixing titania powder with stearic acid-water emulsion. In the composites, the SA performed as phase change material for thermal energy storage, and TiO2 was used as supporting material. The thermal properties of the composites, such as phase change temperature and phase change latent heat, were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) analyses indicated that there was no chemical interaction during the preparation process. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) were used to survey crystalloid phase and microstructure of the SA/TiO2 composites. Besides, the thermal reliability of the composites was investigated by a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The satisfactory SA/TiO2 composite with 33% mass ratio of the SA melts at 53.84 degrees C with a latent heat of 47.82 kJ/kg and solidifies at 53.31 degrees C with a latent heat of 46.60 kJ/kg. Due to its non-inflammability, nontoxicity and good thermal stability, the composite can be used as shape-stabilized phase change materials for building thermal energy storage. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Microencapsulated stearic acid (SA) with silicon dioxide (SiO2) shell as composite thermal energy storage material was prepared using sol–gel methods. In the composite thermal energy storage material, the stearic acid was used as the core material that is the latent heat storage phase change material (PCM), and the silicon dioxide acted as the shell material which prevented the leakage of the melted stearic acid. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) were used to determine chemical structure and microstructure of microencapsulated stearic acid with silicon dioxide shell. The thermal properties and thermal stability were investigated by the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The SEM results showed that the stearic acid was encapsulated in the shell of the silicon dioxide shell. The DSC results indicated that the microencapsulated stearic acid with the silicon dioxide shell as composite thermal energy storage material solidifies at 52.6°C with a latent heat of 162.0kJ/kg and melts at 53.5°C with a latent heat of 171.0kJ/kg when the encapsulation ratio of the SA is 90.7%. The TGA results presented that the silicon dioxide shells can improve the thermal stability of the microencapsulated stearic acid as composite thermal energy storage material.

Abstract:In this paper, the paraffin/sepiolite composites were fabricated as novel shape-stable phase change materials (SSPCMs) by vacuum impregnation for thermal energy storage. The structure-property relationships and comprehensive performance of sepiolite-based composite SSPCMs prepared with/without treatment of sepiolite from three mineral deposits were investigated. Compared with the natural sepiolite (SEP), the sepiolite after the purification and acidification treatment (TSEP) is a more suitable supporting carrier for paraffin wax. The prepared paraffin/TSEP composite SSPCM exhibits a significant promotion in absorption mass of paraffin and phase change latent heat. The maximum increase in latent heat of melt and crystallization is 78.32 % and 77.47 %. Simultaneously, the prepared sepiolite-based SSPCMs can reach up to 35.18 % paraffin loading. Its highest latent heat of melting and freezing is 60.12 J/g and 57.09 J/g, respectively, and the relative enthalpy efficiency is as high as 94.45 %. In addition, the sepiolite-based composite SSPCMs show good thermal stability and chemical stability according to the thermal cycling test. Moreover, it is demonstrated that sepiolite-based SSPCMs can slow down the spread of heat by absorbing heat energy and have reliable energy storage and temperature regulation performance. Therefore, the inexpensive and abundant sepiolite can be applied in phase change materials for waste heat recovery and temperature regulation.

Abstract:In this study, stearic acid/silica phase change composites were prepared by the sol-gel method using stearic acid as phase change materials (PCMs). The effects of mass fraction of stearic acid were comprehensively investigated. The structures and thermal properties of the obtained composites were characterized by various methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), leakage tests, and thermogravimetry analysis (TG). The results indicated that composite containing 76% stearic acid had the best thermal properties and low mass leakage, making 76% stearic acid as the maximum content that silica matrix could protect in the composites. The latter was further confirmed by morphological analyses of the silica matrix. Silica matrix exhibited spherical particle clusters, following big–small–big–small size pattern as stearic acid rose. The composite with 76% stearic acid was at the key point of change in particle size. These findings look promising for future to prepare silica-based phase change composites with good thermal properties easily.

Abstract:Stearic acid (SA)/expanded graphite (EG) composite phase change material (PCM) was prepared through physical adsorption of SA to EG with mass ratios of SA varying from 6:1 to 11:1. The prepared composite PCM was characterized using scanning electron microscopy images, X-ray diffraction analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. A latent thermal energy storage system was used to measure the thermal cycling performance of the prepared composite PCM. The results show that when the composite PCM was prepared with 90 % SA, a high latent heat value and good thermal stability were achieved. Additionally, the heat transfer efficiency of both heat storage and heat retrieval was improved by the addition of EG.

Abstract:This work is focused on the preparation, characterization and thermal properties of stearic acid/polycarbonate (SA/PC) microcapsule as a new kind of phase change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage, which was prepared by solution casting method. Its morphology, chemical structure and thermal performances were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), temperature curves and volume expansion coefficient, respectively. The results show that stearic acid was encapsulated successfully with the maximum mass fraction of 52% without leakage from the composite. The average diameter of microcapsule was found to be 0.50.mu m. Two components of the composite PCM, SA and PC, have no chemical reaction and exhibit good compatibility with each other. The melting and freezing temperatures and the latent heats of the microcapsule were measured as 60.0 degrees C and 51.2 degrees C, 91.4 J/g and 96.8 J/g, respectively. Iron filings were employed to improve thermal storage and release rates and the rates increased 23% compared with the composite without iron filings. Accelerated thermal cycling test showed that the microcapsules have good thermal reliability after subjected to 1000 thermal cycling because it has similar volume expansion coefficient of polycarbonate. Due to its excellent thermal stability and reliability and simple preparation method, the shape-stabilized SA/PC microcapsule can be considered as candidate PCM for thermal energy storage applications. Stearic acid/expanded graphite composite phase change material with high thermal conductivity for thermal energy storage

Abstract:In this study, expanded graphite (EG) was added to melted stearic acid (SA) by the melt blending method to prepare SA/EG composite phase change material (PCM) with different ratios. EG with ultra-high porosity and large specific surface area can effectively adsorb melted SA through capillary force and van der Waals force. The results showed that when the loading amount of EG was 12 wt.%, almost no liquid leakage occurred and the composite showed excellent stability. In addition, the three-dimensional network structure of EG interconnection provides an efficient heat transfer path and reduces the thermal resistance of the interface. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of the composite was as high as 6.54 W m−1 K−1, which was 19.179 times higher than that of pure SA. Furthermore, the melting enthalpy and melting temperature of the composite were 163.35 J g−1 and 67.08 °C, respectively. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shown that physical interaction instead of chemical reaction happened between EG and SA. When the mass fraction of EG is 12 wt.%, the composite PCM shows a relatively more balanced and uniform thermal image compared with SA, and the heat storage rate of the composite PCM was about 2.3 times of SA, and the heat release rate was 3.1 times of SA. In addition, the composite PCM showed excellent thermal stability, chemical stability, and cyclic stability, indicating that the working performance of the composite PCM was relatively stable within the temperature range of 100 °C.

A novel three-dimensional network-based stearic acid/graphitized carbon foam composite as high-performance shape-stabilized phase change material for thermal energy storage

Abstract:Three-dimensional porous carbon materials have received extensive attention as supports for shape-stabilized phase change materials (PCMs). In order to improve the loading capacity, thermal conductivity and encapsulation performance for PCMs, a three-dimensional graphitized carbon foam (GCF) was developed with gradient hierarchical porous surface. The GCF was successfully prepared by pyrolysis of nano-magnesium oxide/epoxy resin mixture followed by surface treatment through a carbon-thermal reaction of Fe2O3. Using the GCF prepared at 1200 °C (GCF-1200) as a support for stearic acid (SA), a novel three-dimensional network-based SA/GCF composite was achieved as shape-stabilized PCM. The results show that the GCF-1200 has a large SA loading capacity of 84.66 wt% without any liquid leakage. The prepared SA/GCF-1200 composite exhibits a good interfacial bonding between the GCF-1200 and SA without obvious phase separation in its fracture surface. The composite possesses a high compressive strength of 9.45 MPa increasing by about 3.02-fold compared with the GCF-1200, and meanwhile has a significantly improved thermal conductivity of 1.012 W/m K by 4.36 times that of pristine SA. In addition, the melting and freezing enthalpy for the composite was measured as 181.8 and 182.7 J/g, respectively, which corresponds to a thermal storage efficiency of up to 99.9%. More importantly, it presents excellent thermal reliability and chemical stability without evident changes in enthalpy after 200 thermal cycles. Therefore, the composite has a great potential for thermal energy storage applications.
Novel composite phase change material of high heat storage and photothermal conversion ability

Abstract:Using porous matrix as the supports for phase change materials (PCMs) can effectively eliminate the leakage problem of PCMs during the phase change process. In heat storage utilization, the as-prepared shape-stabilized phase change materials are highly desired to have high latent heat density, rapid heat transfer ability and less supercooling. Although mesoporous silica with large pore volume and specific surface area might be a promising matrix for PCMs, it would be more beneficial if its thermal conductivity and photo-thermal conversion capacity were further improved, especially for the utilization of solar thermal energy. Herein, a composite PCM, namely SA/, was fabricated successfully using mesoporous silica coated carbon nanotubes () as the shape-stabilized matrix for the PCM stearic acid (SA). The results of characterizations showed that had a core-shell structure with mesoporous silica of a thickness of about 30 nm coated on the outer surface of carbon tubes (CNTs) homogeneously. The melting enthalpy of the obtained SA/ composite was 125.6 J/g. Its thermal conductivity increased 64.7%, and the supercooling degree decreased 3.2 ℃ while compared with those of pure SA. The melting and solidification enthalpies of SA/ decreased 1.1% and 1.3%, respectively after 200 thermal cycles. Besides, it is also confirmed that SA/ had good photo-thermal conversion performance. These imply that the synthesized SA/ composite would be an ideal heat storage material, especially for solar energy utilization.

Abstract:As an important method to effectively improve energy efficiency, the study of thermal energy storage is particularly important. In this study, six types of clay mineral-based form-stable phase-change materials (FSPCMs) were prepared by the vacuum adsorption method. The adsorption capacity of vermiculite and diatomite was satisfactory, and sepiolite showed the worst adsorption capacity. Clay minerals can delay the thermal decomposition rate of capric–palmitic acid (CA–PA), and the specific surface area and pore capacity of clay minerals all decrease dramatically after the clay minerals have absorbed CA–PA. FSPCMs exhibited a higher heat storage and release efficiency and reflects a certain temperature control performance. In addition, only physical adsorption between the CA–PA and the clay material occurred, and no chemical reaction occurred. Finally, FSPCMs still have high latent heat of phase transition, and they can be used for low-temperature thermal energy storage.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Fatty acid and fatty acid blend phase change materials (PCM) have issues with easy leakage and low thermal conductivity in thermal storage and exothermic processes. To overcome this issue, a novel low-temperature composite material, Lauric acid - stearic acid - fumed silica - expanded graphite (LA-SA-FS-EG), was fabricated by vacuum impregnation technique using lauric acid-stearic acid (LA-SA) as the phase change material (PCM), fumed silica (FS) as the support material, and expanded graphite (EG) as the thermal conductive material . Leakage tests indicated that the maximum adsorption of LA-SA by fumed silica was 75 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to observe the microscopic morphology of the composites. The crystal structure and chemical composition of the composites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) data indicates that the melting temperatures of LA-SA-FS-EG 3 %, 5 % and 7 % were 33.38 °C, 33.32 °C and 33.13 °C respectively, with melting latent heats of 110.8 J/g, 114.3 J/g and 119.9 J/g, respectively. The thermal conductivity of LA-SA-FS-EG 7 % is improved by 454 % compared to the LA-SA-FS composite without the addition of EG. LA-SA-FS-EG7% composite showed excellent heat storage capacity. LA-SA-FS-EG7% has a 46.1 % increase in heat storage rate and a 59.4 % increase in thermal release rate compared to LA-SA-FS composite. Notably, the LA-SA-FS-EG7% composite retains good thermal properties even after 1000 heating and cooling cycles. Consequently, the LA-SA-FS-EG7% composites produced have potential applications in thermal energy storage and building energy efficiency.

Abstract:A series of shape-stabilized composite phase change materials (CPCM) were prepared, taking stearic acid (SA) as solid-liquid phase change material and activated alumina oxide (AAO) as matrix material. In comparison to other matrix materials, the superiority of AAO lies in its relatively higher thermal conductivity. And as porous oxide based PCM, pure AAO based PCM has been little reported in the existing literatures. Graphene nanoplates (GNP) were added to improve thermal conductivity of prepared samples. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the chemical structure, crystal structure and microstructure of the composite materials. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used to study the latent heat and phase transition temperature. Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) analyzed thermal stability of the composite materials. Thermal conductivity of the composite material was also measured. The results show that SA is adsorbed well on the AAO, and as the content of the added GNP increases, thermal conductivity of the composite material is also significantly improved. Thermal conductivity of prepared CPCM3 reaches 1.71 W/m.K, 11.4 times of that of SA.
Kaolinite nanotube-stearic acid composite as a form-stable phase change material for thermal energy storage

Abstract:<p>Kaolinite (Kaol) is a natural industrial mineral that has the advantages of a low cost, flame retardance, and a porous layered structure. In this study, a form-stable phase change material (FSPCM) for thermal energy storage was prepared by adsorbing stearic acid (SA) into the pores of the washed and ultrasonically treated Kaol-cetyl trimethylammonium chloride intercalation compound (Kaol-nanotubes). Analysis techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were used to study the structures, compositions, and thermal properties of the prepared composites. The maximum mass ratio of the SA adsorbed into the Kaol-nanotubes without leakage was as high as 35.6%, and this was ascribed to the extensive exfoliation and curling of the particles. SA was impregnated maximally into the Kaol and the Kaol-dimethyl sulfoxide intercalation compound (Kaol-DMSO) at 25.2% and 32.3%, respectively. The SA/Kaol, SA/Kaol-DMSO, and SA/Kaol-nanotube composites had phase change temperatures of 53.0 °C, 51.9 °C, and 52.4 °C and latent heats of 33.8, 43.4, and 47.5 J/g, respectively. Furthermore, these composites exhibited distinct enhanced thermal stabilities. Due to the high adsorption capacity, high latent heat, good thermal stabilities, and low cost, the SA/Kaol nanotube composite is a potential FSPCM for practical applications.</p>

A Low-Temperature Phase Change Material Based on Capric-Stearic Acid/Expanded Graphite for Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract:In this study, a capric acid (CA)-stearic acid (SA)/expanded graphite (EG) composite phase change material (PCM) was prepared, and the optimum mass ratio of CA-SA is 0.84:0.16. The composite PCM was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. It can be concluded that the CA-SA mixture was found to possess good compatibility with EG, the thermal conductivity of the CA-SA/10 wt % EG composite PCM was 3.28 times higher than that of the CA-SA mixture, and the PCM thermal stability was satisfactory; no leakage occurred in the CA-SA/10 wt % EG composite PCM. The PCM has good thermal reliability after 500 thermal cycles. Finally, it is shown that the CA-SA/10 wt % EG composite PCM showed excellent performance, and therefore, it can be used for low-temperature thermal energy storage.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) can be incorporated with low-cost minerals to synthesize composites for thermal energy storage in building applications. Stone coal (SC) after vanadium extraction treatment shows potential for secondary utilization in composite preparation. We prepared SC-based composite PCMs with SC as a matrix, stearic acid (SA) as a PCM, and expanded graphite (EG) as an additive. The combined roasting and acid leaching treatment of raw SC was conducted to understand the effect of vanadium extraction on promoting loading capacity. Results showed that the combined treatment of roasting at 900°C and leaching increased the SC loading of the composite by 6.2% by improving the specific surface area. The loading capacity and thermal conductivity of the composite obviously increased by 127% and 48.19%, respectively, due to the contribution of 3wt% EG. These data were supported by the high load of 66.69% and thermal conductivity of 0.59 W·m −1 ·K −1 of the designed composite. The obtained composite exhibited a phase change temperature of 52.17°C, melting latent heat of 121.5 J·g −1 , and good chemical compatibility. The SC-based composite has prospects in building applications exploiting the secondary utilization of minerals.

Abstract:Stearic acid/expanded graphite composites with different mass ratios were prepared by absorbing liquid stearic acid into the expanded graphite. In the composite materials, the stearic acid was used as the phase change material for thermal energy storage, and the expanded graphite acted as the supporting material. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and thermal diffusivity measurement were used to determine the chemical structure, crystalline phase, microstructure and thermal diffusivity of the composites, respectively. The thermal properties and thermal stability were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal analysis results indicated that the materials exhibited the same phase transition characteristics as the stearic acid and their latent heats were approximately the same as the values calculated based on the weight fraction of the stearic acid in the composites. The microstructural analysis results showed that the stearic acid was well absorbed in the porous network of the expanded graphite, and there was no leakage of the stearic acid from the composites even when it was in the molten state.

Abstract:Rapid energy consumption stimulates the development of energy-saving materials. In this work, the L–S eutectic mixture used as a PCM was compounded with EP via vacuum adsorption to synthesize LS/EP CPCM. The maximum mass adsorption rate of EP on L–S is determined to be 70% via leakage experiments. The microscopic morphology, chemical, and crystal structure were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The phase change properties were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The melting temperature of LS/EP is 37.79 °C, with a latent heat of 126.05 J g −1 , and it has a crystallinity of over 90%. The thermal decomposition was evaluated by TGA. The initial decomposition temperature is 132.20 °C for LS/EP. In addition, the results of accelerated phase change cycling experiments showed that LS/EP CPCM has good reliability.

Abstract:Composite phase change materials (CPCM) with improved thermal properties were fabricated by encapsulating stearic acid (SA) into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with carbon fiber (CF). The HDPE acted as the supporting materials to prevent SA leakage. CF was introduced to enhance the thermal conductivity of the CPCM. Some characterization measurements were carried out to investigate the CPCM thermal properties. The patterns of Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) revealed that the SA, HDPE and CF were combined physically, and the crystal structure of the mixture remained constant. The results of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) indicated that the microstructure of the CPCM was relatively stable. The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated that the melting point and latent heat of CPCM6 were 68.48 °C and 140.17 kJ/kg, and the solidifying point and latent heat were 66.95 °C and 141.09 kJ/kg. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) verified that the CPCM had an improved thermal stability within the working temperature range. The thermal conductivity of CPCM6 was 0.4043 W/m⋅K, which is 2.22 times greater than for SA. The addition of CF effectively enhanced the thermal conductivity of the SA. Overall, CPCM6 possesses the potential for application in heat storage fields.
