Abstract:In this paper, we report the frequency comb response experimentally and analytically in a rhombic micro-resonator with parametrical modulation. When the electrostatically actuated rhombic micro-resonator is modulated axially by a low-frequency periodic excitation, a comb-like vibration response with few equidistant positioned fingers in the frequency domain is observed. The finger spacing of frequency comb response is exactly consistent with modulation frequency and the number and amplitude of the fingers can be tuned by modulation strength. A mixed frequency comb with extra comb fingers is further generated when the resonator is modulated simultaneously by two different low-frequency excitation signals. By adjusting the relation of the two modulation frequencies, unequal spacing frequency combs are achieved for the first time, which leads to a more flexible tunability of the comb spacing for different applications. Theoretical analysis based on the dynamic model well explains the corresponding observations.

Abstract:We have investigated parametric seeding of a microresonator frequency comb (microcomb) by way of a pump laser with two electro-optic-modulation sidebands. We show that the pump-sideband spacing is precisely replicated throughout the microcomb's optical spectrum, and we demonstrate a record absolute line-spacing stability for microcombs of 1.6 × 10(-13) at 1 s. The spectrum of a microcomb is complex, and often non-equidistant subcombs are observed. Our results demonstrate that parametric seeding can not only control the subcombs, but can lead to the generation of a strictly equidistant microcomb spectrum.

Abstract:Frequency combs are useful in a wide range of applications, such as optical metrology and high-precision spectroscopy. We experimentally study a controllable frequency comb generated in a tunable superconducting coplanar-waveguide resonator in the microwave regime. A two-tone drive is applied on one of the resonance modes of the resonator and comb generation is observed around the resonance frequency of the resonator. Both central frequency and teeth density of the comb are precisely controllable, and the teeth spacing can be adjusted from Hz to MHz. Moreover, we show that a few hundreds of sidebands can be generated using a sufficiently strong drive power and the weakest drive power needed to generate the comb can be reduced to approach the quantum limit. These experimental results can be qualitatively explained via theoretical analysis.

Abstract:We suggest a scheme to manipulate the generation dynamics of high-Q microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs). Our simulation demonstrates that a certain subfamily of comb teeth can be suppressed via selectively filtering out limited modes, from which high-quality mode-locked pulses can be generated. Mode-pulling in microcomb generation is also analyzed quantitatively to explain the results. These results can help us better understand microcomb generation dynamics and will be beneficial in controlling the generated comb line number and spacing.

Abstract:Control over the coupling between multiple modes of a frequency comb is an important step toward measurement-based quantum computation with a continuous-variable system. We demonstrate the creation of square-ladder correlation graphs in a microwave comb with 95 modes. The graphs are engineered through precise control of the relative phase of three pumps applied to a Josephson parametric oscillator. Experimental measurement of the mode scattering matrix is in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on a linearized equation of motion of the parametric oscillator. The digital methods used to create and measure the correlations are easily scaled to more modes and more pumps, with the potential to tailor a specific correlation graph topology.

Abstract:The modulation of phononic frequency comb (PFC), as a ruler of frequency, is complex and flexible via different pump methods and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. This article reports a new approach for achieving high tunability in PFC generator through the excitation of the coexistence state and cavity modulation. A novel visualized multiple-dam model elucidates the behavior of comb generation. By analyzing the effects of pump frequency and pump intensity, it is revealed that the coexistence state is fundamentally governed by degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM), a principle shared with the normal state. Operating the resonator in the coexistence state enables the generation of a greater number of frequency combs using the same pump intensity. This leads to an enhanced repetition rate of the comprehensive combs, facilitating the encoding of multiple information and fostering more pronounced wave interactions. In addition, a cavity-modulation approach is introduced through the manipulation of dc bias voltage, allowing for improving the tunability of frequency comb. The utilization of MEMS electrostatic resonators in achieving this phenomenon holds promise for various applications in frequency spectroscopy, tunable calibrated measurement, and encryption engineering. The coexistence state and cavity modulation pathways represent an important advancement in understanding the mechanisms and characteristics of PFC generation and interaction.

Abstract:Since its invention, optical frequency comb has revolutionized a broad range of subjects from metrology to spectroscopy. The recent development of microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs) provides a unique pathway to create frequency comb systems on a chip. Indeed, microcomb-based spectroscopy, ranging, optical synthesizer, telecommunications and astronomical calibrations have been reported recently. Critical to many of the integrated comb systems is the broad coverage of comb spectra. Here, microcombs of more than two-octave span (450 nm to 2,008 nm) is demonstrated through χ (2) and χ (3) nonlinearities in a deformed silica microcavity. The deformation lifts the circular symmetry and creates chaotic tunneling channels that enable broadband collection of intracavity emission with a single waveguide. Our demonstration introduces a new degree of freedom, cavity deformation, to the microcomb studies, and our microcomb spectral range is useful for applications in optical clock, astronomical calibration and biological imaging.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the transmission spectrum of a coupled resonator structure in which a low-Q microdisk and a high-Q microtoroid indirectly interact with each other mediated by a fiber taper. Asymmetric Fano resonances were observed and could be controlled to change periodically by adjusting the distance between the two microresonators. It is revealed that the Fano resonance originates from the coupling of the two modes belonging to the two microresonators. The observed period of distance change is around 8 μm, which shows good agreement with the theoretical prediction by the beat of multiple propagating modes in the fiber taper.

Abstract:The spontaneous emission of atoms can be controlled by placing them between two mirrors that form an optical cavity. Rapid advances in material processing techniques in the last 10 years have made it possible to fabricate microscopic optical cavities that can be finely tuned into resonance with the emitter. This has enabled progress in single-photon sources, nano-lasers and spectroscopy of new nano-emitters such as semiconductor quantum dots and Nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond. Here we introduce a step-by-step method for computing the Purcell factor of the latest generation of open tunable Fabry-Perot microcavities used in micro-photoluminescence studies. We discuss how the Purcell factor can be optimised as a function of the cavity's geometry and find the conditions for resonance with the emitter. Subtleties such as the optical properties of the emitter and penetration depth of the electric field into the cavity mirrors are also considered.

Abstract:It is of scientific significance to explore the terahertz radiation source with the performances of high power, tunable frequency, and controllable chirp for the realization of coherent control of quantum systems. How to realize frequency chirp control of terahertz synchrotron radiation is the last puzzle to be completed. In this Letter, we propose a method to control the radiation frequency chirp with precision. A novel photomixing scheme is presented to generate a longitudinally modulated laser pulse with non-uniform time intervals between the adjacent micro-peaks, which means that there is a chirp in the modulation frequency, and this chirp can be continuously tuned. The interaction is made to occur between an electron beam and the modulated laser pulse in a modulator (an undulator tuned at the laser wavelength), then terahertz synchrotron radiation with the same spectrum characteristics as the modulated laser will be generated when the electron beam passes through the following bending magnet. We expect that this method will open a new way for the coherent control of quantum systems in the terahertz regime.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel method to control the free spectral range (FSR) of silica micro-rod resonators precisely. This method is accomplished by iteratively applying laser annealing on the already-fabricated micro-rod resonators. Fine and repeatable increasing of resonator FSR is demonstrated, and the best resolution is smaller than 5 MHz, while the resonator quality-factor is only slightly affected by the iterative annealing procedure. Using the fabricated micro-rod resonators, single dissipative Kerr soliton microcombs are generated, and soliton repetition frequencies are tuned precisely by the iterative annealing process. The demonstrated method can be used for dual-comb spectroscopy and coherent optical communications.

Abstract:An optical microresonator, which parameters are periodically modulated in time, can generate optical frequency comb (OFC) spectral resonances equally spaced by the modulation frequency. Significant recent progress in realization of OFC generators based on the modulation of microresonator parameters boosted interest to their further experimental development and theoretical understanding of underlying phenomena. However, most of theoretical approaches developed to date were based on the lumped parameter models which unable to evaluate, analyse, and optimize the effect of spatial distribution of modulation inside microresonators. Here we develop the multi-quantum semiclassical theory of parametrically excited OFCs which solves these problems. As an application, we compare OFCs which are resonantly or adiabatically excited in a racetrack microresonator (RTM) and a SNAP (Surface Nanoscale Axial Photonics) bottle microresonator (SBM). The principal difference between these two types of microresonators consists in much slower propagation speed of whispering gallery modes along the SBM axis compared to the speed of modes propagating along the RTM waveguide axis. We show that, due to this difference, similar OFCs can be generated by an SBM with a much smaller size compared to that of the RTM. Based on the developed theory, we analytically express the OFC spectrum of microresonators through the spatial distribution of modulated parameters and optimize this distribution to arrive at the strongest OFCs generated with minimum power consumption.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs are laser sources which are capable of generating discrete, equal-spaced and highly coherent comb modes. Optical frequency comb technique provides a significant bridge to transfer the stability between optical frequency and radio frequency. The advances of this technology greatly promote the development of precision spectroscopy, optical time/frequency transfer, optical frequency division, long-distance transfer of time/frequency references and high-precision distance measurement. Benefiting from the wide spectral outputs, femtosecond lasers have become the best choice for the fulfillment of optical frequency combs. Within the precise control of the repetition frequency and carrier-envelope offset frequency of the pulse train from femtosecond lasers, a stable optical frequency comb both in the time domain and frequency domain can be obtained. This dissertation presents the precise control of repetition rate, carrier-envelope offset frequency and coherent pulse synthesis in optical frequency combs.

Abstract:Experiments and theoretical modeling yielded significant progress towards understanding of Kerr-effect induced optical frequency comb generation in microresonators. However, the simultaneous interaction of hundreds or thousands of optical comb frequencies with the same number of resonator modes leads to complicated nonlinear dynamics that are far from fully understood. An important prerequisite for modeling the comb formation process is the knowledge of phase and amplitude of the comb modes as well as the detuning from their respective microresonator modes. Here, we present comprehensive measurements that fully characterize optical microcomb states. We introduce a way of measuring resonator dispersion and detuning of comb modes in a hot resonator while generating an optical frequency comb. The presented phase measurements show unpredicted comb states with discrete {\pi} and {\pi}/2 steps in the comb phases that are not observed in conventional optical frequency combs.

Abstract:We present a theoretical investigation of the coherent control of multiphoton dynamics and a high-order-harmonic generation (HHG) process driven by two frequency-comb fields, via the interference of multiphoton transition paths by tuning the relative envelope delay between fields. The many-mode Floquet theorem is employed to provide a nonperturbative and exact treatment of the interaction between a quantum system and frequency-comb laser fields. The case of two frequency-comb fields with the same repetition frequency and the carrier frequencies of fundamental and second harmonics, respectively, is considered. Due to the coupling of the second harmonic controlling the frequency-comb laser field, multiphoton transitions involving both fundamental- and second-harmonic photons occur. Different multiphoton transition paths can be superpositioned when the matching condition for carrier-envelope-phase shifts is satisfied, offering the possibility of coherent control of HHG power spectra via the interference of paths by tuning the relative envelope delay between fields. The calculated HHG power spectra present both sub-cycle oscillation and multi-cycle modulation behavior when the relative envelope delay is varied. It is also found that, under the condition of multiphoton resonance, the HHG power spectra can be further enhanced by about 10 times via the interference of multiphoton transition paths by tuning the relative envelope delay.
