Abstract:A real-time visible light communication (VLC) system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for simultaneous high-speed wireless communication and positioning beacon transmission realization. Through proposed 2 amplitude shift keying-constant envelope-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (2ASK-CE-OFDM) coding, the transmitter can integrate 2ASK positioning beacon signal onto the envelope of CE-OFDM communication signal. The communication and positioning signals can be demodulated at the receiver, respectively. The mathematical derivations of 2ASK-CE-OFDM and implementation details of the field programmable gate array (FPGA) based real-time VLC system are introduced in this paper. The real-time VLC system transmission performance is verified with different light radial distances. Compared with directly modulating the 2ASK signal onto the envelope of OFDM, our proposed system has a better performance in terms of the light radial distance. The experimental result shows that the bit error rates (BERs) of 2ASK based positioning beacon and CE-OFDM based communication signal transmission are 4.3x10(-7) and 6.8x10(-4) when the wireless radial distance is 3.5 m.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed communication becomes a new area which draws increasing attention. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed VLC system based on Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) for the first time. We change the value of different factors and compare the performance of the system in order to find the effect of different factors. The experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) for an overall 1.2Gb/s 64QAM and 32QAM signal over 40 cm transmission can be under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10 -3 . Meanwhile, we clearly demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of DFT-S OFDM modulation format for the high speed VLC system.

Abstract:As an emerging wireless communication technology,visible light communication (VLC)is one of the effective solutions for the shortage of wireless spectrum resource.In this work,a lowcomplexity design scheme of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is proposed based on the mask invariable characteristics of the received signal-to-noise rate of VLC in the electrical domain.The scheme is verified by the experiments.The experimental results show that,compared with the adaptive equal bits transmission scheme,the proposed adaptive OFDM system makes full use of the bandwidth resources of wireless optical channel,and it shows improvements in transmission rate and BER performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed 2×2 MIMO real-time VLC system based on 64QAM-Discrete Multi-Tone (64QAM-DMT) modulation. The system was achieved by utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and silicon substrate LEDs. The effect of attenuation of the attenuator in transmitter and receiver, the aperture diameter of the received signal, code rate and different modulation order have been investigated in our experiment. The experimental results show that our real-time VLC system can transmit over 2m distance for an overall 5Gb/s successfully.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-speed white-light real-time VLC system based on phosphorescent white LED is proposed. This system employs 64QAM-Discrete Multi-Tone (64QAM-DMT) modulation format. The hardware architecture is built by utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The system performance is also investigated by the effect of attenuation of attenuator in both transmitter and receiver, peak-to-peak voltage and bias current of the LED. It is displayed in experimental results that this real-time VLC system achieve a 2.5Gb/s data rate under a 1.7 m free space transmission length successfully.

Abstract:In this paper, a real-time visible light communication (VLC) based on blue laser diode is implemented on field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. To reduce requirements for signal processing speed, we propose a parallel scheme for modulation and demodulation with simple hardware implementation and low performance loss. Finally, we successfully constructed a VLC system prototype with 600 MHz transmission bandwidth and 2.4 Gbps communication rate over 1 m link distance. Actual measurements shows that $10 -^{5}$ magnitude bit error rate (BER) is achieved without forward error correction (FEC), which demonstrates excellent performance in reported single-source VLC system.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) systems are expected to support a variety of applications, such as common-information broadcasting, real-time multimedia streaming, and large file downloading. Typically, these applications have different delay requirements. Hence, it is desirable to design high-performance coding scheme capable of supporting a wide range of delays but with acceptable hardware complexity. To achieve this, we propose a delay-tunable coding scheme for VLC systems based on block Markov superposition transmission of short non-binary low-density parity-check (NBLDPC) codes. The proposed coding scheme includes the following advantages: 1) it is easily configurable to fulfill different delay requirements while keeping the code rate constant; 2) it requires essentially the same hardware modules to implement the encoder/decoder as the involved short NBLDPC code; and 3) it can have a larger coding gain if a longer delay is tolerated. Numerical results are presented to show the expected tradeoff between delay and energy in a VLC system.

Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) systems leverage solid-state illumination devices to create high-speed communication links. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered for these intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical channels, however, it suffers from high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Moreover, the implementation of linear, power-efficient, high-current, wideband drivers is challenging. In this paper, the concept of spatial summing is developed where wideband, high PAPR OFDM signals are partitioned into many low-PAPR narrowband signals that are transmitted from multiple LEDs. The signals from different LEDs are allowed to sum in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. Spatial optical-OFDM (SO-OFDM) is proposed in which filtered subsets of carriers are emitted by each LED. In addition, low-PAPR optical single-carrier FDMA (OSC-FDMA) is developed where different collections of LEDs act as virtual users in a multiple-access scheme. The different variations of SO-OFDM and OSC-FDMA are compared to conventional DC-biased optical (DCO) OFDM and are shown to achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to LED nonlinearities leading to error rate performance gains at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology using light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been gaining increasing attention in recent years as it is appealing for a wide range of applications such as indoor positioning. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been applied to indoor wireless optical communications in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the optical channel as well as increasing data rate. In this paper, we investigate the indoor positioning accuracy of optical based OFDM techniques used in VLC systems. A positioning algorithm based on power attenuation is used to estimate the receiver coordinates. We further calculate the positioning errors in all the locations of a room and compare them with those of single carrier modulation scheme, i.e., on-off keying (OOK) modulation. We demonstrate that OFDM positioning system outperforms its conventional counterpart.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) with light emitting diodes (LEDs) is an emerging technology for 5G wireless communications. Recently, using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor as VLC receiver is developed owing to its flexibility and low-cost. However, two illumination levels such as on-off keying (OOK) signal are used. To improve the system throughput and reduce complexity of the hardware design, in this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a multilevel modulation scheme for VLC system utilizing the overlapping of two light sources for the first time, and the two light sources are modulated by an OOK and a Manchester signal respectively. At the receiver, a CMOS camera can demodulate the Manchester and the OOK signal simultaneously. Meanwhile, a low-pass filter (LPF) is used to enhance the system performance. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed multilevel modulation scheme can achieve a net data rate of 4.32 kbit/s.

Abstract:Next-generation visible light communication (VLC) is envisioned to evolve into a high-speed and multi-user system. In this work, a 75-µm single layer quantum dot (QD) micro-LED was fabricated, packaged and used to experimentally demonstrate a 3-meter QAM-OFDMA VLC system affording multiple users with a 1.06-GHz modulation bandwidth. The OFDMA system realized data rates of 1.2 Gbps and 750 Mbps with a BER of 0 and 3.6×10−3 for two independent users with a 1:1 bandwidth ratio, respectively. Additional sub-carrier allocation strategies and scenarios of 2∼6 users have been further evaluated, and all proposed strategies reach the sum-rate of beyond 1.41 Gbps while satisfying the forward error correction (FEC) criteria.

Abstract:We introduce three formats, based on advanced modulation, that improve transmission. These formats are quasi-balanced detection orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing(OFDM), carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation, and single carrier-frequency domain equalization(SC-FDE). We determine the feasibility of these schemes for improving transmission in a VLC system. We analyze the principles of these three modulation formants and provide experimental results.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration of unidirectional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) -wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) -VLC system adopting quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Based on this configuration, we successfully demonstrate a 3x1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM-VLC transmission experiment using three blue phosphor LEDs. The transmission distance can be as long as 140cm. We also demonstrate an 800-Mb/s MISO SCM-WDM VLC transmission experiment based on RGB-LED with 66-cm transmission distance. In the two experiments, pre-equalization and post-equalization both are implemented to compensate for the poor frequency response of LEDs. And the properties of EVM and BER in all channels are measured and analysed.
