Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) has the advantage of high spectral efficiency due to non-requirement of cyclic prefix (CP) and guard band. However, the high direct current (DC) used in OFDM/OQAM is power inefficient for visible light communication (VLC). In this letter, an enhanced OFDM/OQAM (EO-OFDM/OQAM) scheme is proposed for VLC, which is inspired by the idea of the pulse-amplitude-modulation based hybrid optical OFDM (PHO-OFDM) scheme. In this system, the half of subcarriers of the normal branch carry useful data while the remaining subcarriers are selected to carry negative clipping noise instead of useful data for improving the power efficiency, and a flexible power allocation method is introduced. The simulation results show that compared with the PHO-OFDM, the proposed scheme has a better bit error rate (BER) performance under the same average bit rate without additional operations of interference regeneration and cancellation.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely studied and adopted in visible-light communication (VLC) systems because of its high spectral efficiency and low-complexity implementation. However, OFDM-based VLC systems suffer from a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), along with the nonlinear transfer characteristics of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this paper, a subcarrier grouping scheme for an OFDM-based VLC system is proposed. This scheme exploits the property that one LED lamp usually contains multiple independent LED chips. In the proposed scheme, all OFDM signal subcarriers are divided into groups, and each group is transmitted by an individual LED chip while the same receiver structure is maintained. The PAPR is reduced significantly because only some of the subcarriers are located on each LED chip. Hence, the achievable input power can be increased, leading to a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a lower bit error rate (BER). Simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the BER performance can be improved by over two orders of magnitude. Moreover, an adaptive switching mechanism is also proposed in this paper, in which a subcarrier grouping scheme is employed adaptively when the required input power is high. Simulation results validate that the proposed mechanism can enhance system robustness significantly.
A Novel Visible Light Communication Channel Compensation and Reconstruction Algorithm for Linear Decomposed CPM Signals

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) has been proposed in visible light communication (VLC) to overcome the limited modulation bandwidth of light emitting diode (LED). Due to the implementation of the inverse fast Fourier transform at the DCO-OFDM transmitter, DCO-OFDM suffers from its high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which restricts its use in some VLC applications, especially where the optical power efficiency is a crucial requirement. That is because the LEDs used in VLC systems have a limited optical power-current linear range. To this end, a novel discrete Fourier transform spread-optical pulse amplitude modulation (DFTS-OPAM) signal scheme based on the single carrier-interleaved frequency division multiple access (SC-IFDMA) signal is introduced in this paper to address the high PAPR issue of OFDM. DFTS-OPAM is achieved by considering a PAM as an SC-IFDMA data symbol and duplicate the output vector of the fast Fourier transform at the SC-IFDMA transmitter side. Simulation results show that the PAPR of the proposed scheme is 7 dB lower than that of DCO-OFDM. Furthermore, this significant PAPR improvement is experimentally investigated where the practical results show that the proposed scheme can provide more 2.5 dB reduction in the average transmitted power requirement compared to DCO-OFDM and can subsequently increase the maximum achieved distance between the transmitter and the receiver up to 44%.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) systems make use of the available LED lamps to realize a high spatial density of high-speed optical links superposed to their natural illumination function. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted for these intensity modulation/direct-detection optical channels. However, it suffers from low power efficiency or low spectral efficiency. In this paper, we aim to improve the performance of OFDM-based indoor VLC systems. By utilizing the principle of spatial summing, we propose an anti-periodic asymmetrically clipped OFDM scheme to make efficient use of both power and spectrum. In this scheme, the OFDM subcarriers are partitioned into multiple specific groups to form independent unipolar signals. These signals are simultaneously transmitted from different LEDs that are within the same light fixture and are summed in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. The computer simulation results show that the proposed approach can achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to the clipping distortion caused by the nonlinearities of LED leading to better bit error rate performance for the same spectral efficiency than that of the conventional DCO-OFDM and ACO-OFDM schemes do under both LOS and DOW channels.

Abstract:A major limitation of existing visible light communication (VLC) systems is the limited modulation bandwidth of light-emitting diodes used in such systems. Using adaptive modulation to improve the spectral efficiency for radio communications has been well studied. For VLC with various physical layer schemes, however, how adaptive modulation works is not well understood yet. The goal of this paper is to provide an in-depth analysis of the achievable spectral efficiency of adaptive modulation for three different schemes for high speed VLC: dc-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM), asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), and single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). We will show that in the low signal-to-noise ratio region, the ACO-OFDM-based adaptive modulation scheme outperforms the other two schemes. SC-FDE-based adaptive modulation achieves a better performance than the DCO-OFDM-based scheme, and it is much simpler than the other two schemes.

Abstract:As an emerging wireless communication technology,visible light communication (VLC)is one of the effective solutions for the shortage of wireless spectrum resource.In this work,a lowcomplexity design scheme of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is proposed based on the mask invariable characteristics of the received signal-to-noise rate of VLC in the electrical domain.The scheme is verified by the experiments.The experimental results show that,compared with the adaptive equal bits transmission scheme,the proposed adaptive OFDM system makes full use of the bandwidth resources of wireless optical channel,and it shows improvements in transmission rate and BER performance.

Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) systems leverage solid-state illumination devices to create high-speed communication links. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered for these intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical channels, however, it suffers from high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Moreover, the implementation of linear, power-efficient, high-current, wideband drivers is challenging. In this paper, the concept of spatial summing is developed where wideband, high PAPR OFDM signals are partitioned into many low-PAPR narrowband signals that are transmitted from multiple LEDs. The signals from different LEDs are allowed to sum in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. Spatial optical-OFDM (SO-OFDM) is proposed in which filtered subsets of carriers are emitted by each LED. In addition, low-PAPR optical single-carrier FDMA (OSC-FDMA) is developed where different collections of LEDs act as virtual users in a multiple-access scheme. The different variations of SO-OFDM and OSC-FDMA are compared to conventional DC-biased optical (DCO) OFDM and are shown to achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to LED nonlinearities leading to error rate performance gains at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract:In conventional optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OOFDM) systems, such as pulse-amplitude-modulated discrete multitone (PAM-DMT) and asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), half of the time-domain transmitted signals carry meaningful information, while the other half are set at zero after asymmetric clipping. By specifically exploiting the asymmetric structure of OOFDM such as PAM-DMT and ACO-OFDM, we present a new framework for implementing OOFDM with enhanced performance in terms of both bit error rate (BER) and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). The proposed scheme introduces asymmetric signal reconstruction, instead of direct clipping, in the time domain before transmission. The designed asymmetric reconstruction refines the time-domain statistics of the OOFDM signals by constructively exploiting zero-padded signal positions in conventional OOFDMs. This way, the PAPR of the reconstructed OOFDM signals is effectively reduced. For receivers, to recover the received signals precisely, we further develop an optimal maximum a posteriori detection method, along with an efficient simplified method. Simulation results validate that the proposed scheme enhances the BER performance compared with conventional OOFDMs under both an ideal and a dispersive visible light communication (VLC) channel via our prototype. Specifically, under an ideal additive white Gaussian noise channel, an approximately 4-dB gain is achieved at the BER of 10(-2), along with a 2.5-dB lower PAPR constraint. While under the real dispersive channel, our test shows about 6-dB gain in BER performance.

We implemented the simulation based on the new PAM-OFDM structure through MATLAB and tested the performance of VLC channel according to several different specific schemes. Our simulation results validate the high performance of the new scheme for reducing common-mode noise in the VLC system.

Abstract:This letter presents a coded modulation scheme for indoor visible light communication (VLC), which is based on the recently proposed coding scheme called block Markov superposition transmission (BMST). As the bandwidth of a single light-emitting-diode (LED) light is limited, we use parallel LED wicks to transmit simultaneously multiple coded bit-streams, resembling a multiple access system. At the transmitter, a single stream of data is first encoded by a properly designed BMST encoder and then partitioned equally into multiple streams, each of which, in the case of no precoding, is used to drive an LED wick in an on-off keying (OOK) manner. With a tailored power-allocation scheme, the noise-free received signals can form an equispaced pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) constellation. Also proposed is the use of precoding to achieve Gray mapping, which plays an important role in reducing complexity without degrading performance since no iterative processing is required between the detection and the decoding. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a significant coding gain.

Abstract:We investigate and analyze the asymmetrically clipped and direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ADO-OFDM) in visible light communication (VLC) system. Then we propose two modified channel equalization algorithms of ADO-OFDM in VLC systems. It is shown that the algorithm combined with channel estimation for interference cancellation to recover ADO-OFDM signal is more effective in VLC system, which has the best BER performance.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has emerged as a promising alternative for indoor and vehicular wireless communication, offering several advantages over traditional radio frequency (RF) technology. With the adoption of optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) schemes, visible light communication (VLC) has become more robust and adaptable in indoor, outdoor, vehicular, and underwear communications. Recently, an orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation technique has evolved with better performance than OFDM. The recent finding in the context of VLC shows that the OTFS technique shows remarkable advantages over conventional OFDM techniques except for the modem design complexity. This work introduces a low-complexity direct current-biased optical OTFS (DCO-OTFS) modulation based on OFDM. This paper evaluates the proposed system's performance through simulations, providing evidence of its bit-error-rate (BER), peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), and complexity behavior. Comparative assessments against the DCO-OFDM system are presented to understand the advantages of the low-complex DCO-OTFS system. The findings reveal that the proposed system not only provides low computational complexity in modem design but also maintains superior error performance, with a notable 10 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain over DCO-OFDM along with a superior PAPR, making it a commendable choice for VLC applications.

Hybrid LACO-OFDM with Dimming Control for Visible Light Communication.

Abstract:In this paper, a dimming control scheme is proposed for visible light communication (VLC) based on layered asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (LACO-OFDM) to satisfy different illumination requirements. The proposed scheme combines LACO-OFDM and negative LACO- OFDM (NLACO-OFDM), which is firstly introduced to the best of our knowledge, where the proportion of the two signals is variable to achieve the desired luminance. Moreover, the dynamic range is fully exploited by both LACO-OFDM and NLACO-OFDM, resulting in high channel capacity. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has superior performance than the previous scheme based on LACO-OFDM in terms of power and spectral efficiencies.

Abstract:Abstract Visible light communications (VLC) has received a lot of attention in recent studies because of its benefits over radio‐frequency (RF) communications. It is a short‐range optical wireless communication system that uses light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) as transmitters. Optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an auspicious technology for VLC high‐speed data transfer. The use of OFDM in a VLC system raises the system's peak‐to‐average power ratio (PAPR). The intrinsic non‐linearity of LED is a key concern in an asymmetrically clipped DC‐biased optical OFDM (ADO‐OFDM) system due to its high PAPR. Also, conventional ADO‐OFDM modulation scheme cannot be used for accommodating different demands of services in downlink multiple access due to the restriction of direct current biased optical OFDM (DCO‐OFDM) and asymmetrically clipped optical (ACO‐OFDM) transmission on odd and even subcarriers. To tackle this issue, a modified ADO‐OFDM (MADO‐OFDM) is proposed that adjusts the numbers of subcarriers required for the transmission of ACO‐OFDM and DCO‐OFDM adaptively based on the requests of services in downlink multiple access. Also, the proposed MADO‐OFDM is integrated with a discrete Hartley Matrix transform (DisHMT) precoder and Generalized Piecewise Linear Compander (GPLD) to provide high‐speed data transmission with less PAPR. In addition, the power is allocated to the proposed MADO‐OFDM system optimally by maximizing the channel capacity based on the Aquila optimizer algorithm. The simulation results reveal that the suggested system's PAPR is reduced by 2.4 dB and 0.8 dB, respectively, compared to conventional ADO and hybrid ADO‐OFDM. It also confirms that the suggested generalized PLC can greatly increase BER without affecting the PAPR performance.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) technology is a new high-speed wireless access technology, finding a appropriate channel coding scheme is one of its main research directions. This paper proposed a new scheme to construct quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) code. It is proved by the simulation result that the QC-LDPC code can help to improve the BER performance of the system because there is no girth four in its parity-check matrix. Then this paper studied the decoding algorithms of QC-LDPC code and proposed an improved decoding algorithm which can decrease the complexity of decoding process by introducing the multiplicative factor. The simulation results show that the QC-LDPC code is a suitable channel code for VLC, and the improved MS decoding algorithm reduces the complexity to a large extent on the basis of ensuring the BER performance of the VLC system.
