Abstract:In the past few years, there has been significant progress in the communications and computer technology, which requires stable, clear video image display. On the other hand, conventional analog video processing method, due to its intrinsic limitations, can not meet the requirement of high quality and high speed operation. Meanwhile, the digital video processing technique that integrates with the computer technology is growing rapidly. Abstract:In this paper, a real-time visible light communication (VLC) based on blue laser diode is implemented on field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. To reduce requirements for signal processing speed, we propose a parallel scheme for modulation and demodulation with simple hardware implementation and low performance loss. Finally, we successfully constructed a VLC system prototype with 600 MHz transmission bandwidth and 2.4 Gbps communication rate over 1 m link distance. Actual measurements shows that $10 -^{5}$ magnitude bit error rate (BER) is achieved without forward error correction (FEC), which demonstrates excellent performance in reported single-source VLC system.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed communication becomes a new area which draws increasing attention. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed VLC system based on Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) for the first time. We change the value of different factors and compare the performance of the system in order to find the effect of different factors. The experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) for an overall 1.2Gb/s 64QAM and 32QAM signal over 40 cm transmission can be under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10 -3 . Meanwhile, we clearly demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of DFT-S OFDM modulation format for the high speed VLC system.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-speed white-light real-time VLC system based on phosphorescent white LED is proposed. This system employs 64QAM-Discrete Multi-Tone (64QAM-DMT) modulation format. The hardware architecture is built by utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The system performance is also investigated by the effect of attenuation of attenuator in both transmitter and receiver, peak-to-peak voltage and bias current of the LED. It is displayed in experimental results that this real-time VLC system achieve a 2.5Gb/s data rate under a 1.7 m free space transmission length successfully.

Abstract:A real-time visible light communication (VLC) system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for simultaneous high-speed wireless communication and positioning beacon transmission realization. Through proposed 2 amplitude shift keying-constant envelope-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (2ASK-CE-OFDM) coding, the transmitter can integrate 2ASK positioning beacon signal onto the envelope of CE-OFDM communication signal. The communication and positioning signals can be demodulated at the receiver, respectively. The mathematical derivations of 2ASK-CE-OFDM and implementation details of the field programmable gate array (FPGA) based real-time VLC system are introduced in this paper. The real-time VLC system transmission performance is verified with different light radial distances. Compared with directly modulating the 2ASK signal onto the envelope of OFDM, our proposed system has a better performance in terms of the light radial distance. The experimental result shows that the bit error rates (BERs) of 2ASK based positioning beacon and CE-OFDM based communication signal transmission are 4.3x10(-7) and 6.8x10(-4) when the wireless radial distance is 3.5 m.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed 2×2 MIMO real-time VLC system based on 64QAM-Discrete Multi-Tone (64QAM-DMT) modulation. The system was achieved by utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and silicon substrate LEDs. The effect of attenuation of the attenuator in transmitter and receiver, the aperture diameter of the received signal, code rate and different modulation order have been investigated in our experiment. The experimental results show that our real-time VLC system can transmit over 2m distance for an overall 5Gb/s successfully.

Abstract:A real-time quantum key distribution (QKD) system is developed in this paper. In the system, based on the feature of a field-programmable gate array, secure key extraction control and algorithm have been optimally designed to perform sifting, error correction, and privacy amplification altogether in real time. In the QKD experiment, information synchronization mechanism and high-speed classic data channel are designed to ensure the steady operation of the system. Decoy state and synchronous laser light source are used in the system, while the length of optical fiber between Alice and Bob is 20 km. With photons repetition frequency of 20 MHz, the final key rate could reach 17 kb/s. Smooth and robust operation is verified with 6 h continuous test and associated with encrypted voice communication test.

Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent research progresses on real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission based on FPGA. We successfully demonstrated four-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) 256.51Gb/s 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM)-OFDM signal transmission system for short-reach optical amplifier free inter-connection with real-time reception. Four optical carriers are modulated by four different 16QAM-OFDM signals via 10G-class direct modulation lasers (DMLs). We achieved highest capacity real-time reception optical OFDM signal transmission over 2.4-km SMF with the bit-error ratio (BER) under soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) limitation of 2.4x10(-2). In order to achieve higher spectrum efficiency (SE), we demonstrate 4-channel high level QAM-OFDM transmission over 20-km SMF-28 with real-time reception. 58.72-Gb/s 256QAM-OFDM and 56.4-Gb/s 128QAM-OFDM signal transmission within 25-GHz grid is achieved with the BER under 2.4x10(-2) and real-time reception.

Abstract:To solve the bottleneck problem of high-speed, high-resolution real-time image transmission and processing on photoelectric theodolite, a framework of real-time image transmission based on optical fiber and FPGA + multi-core DSP processing unit is proposed, which means this design realized high-speed image transmit to multi-core DSP processing unit in real time. On this basis of that, a custom protocol of image transmission on optical fiber has been developed by using the protocol to interconnect image processing unit between various subsystems, such as displaying subsystem and recording subsystem. A collectivity design of system, hardware design and software design of system are described, especially designs of image transmission protocol and multi-core DSP processing unit, which are introduced in detail to build an experimental platform, test and analyze the system. Extensive experiments on the whole system validate that, real-time image transmission to subsystems gets rate at 2.5 Gb/s by optical fiber channel, and transmission gets rate at 3.125 Gb/s between the multi-core DSP and FPGA on multi-core DSP image processing unit. The system is stable, reliable and low error rate. It has advantages such as strong processing capacity, strong performance of anti-electromagnetism interference. This system has been applied in engineering projects.

Abstract:Implementing dimming control in visible light communication (VLC) systems often involves a trade-off that reduces data rates. To address this, we propose a hybrid visible light (VL)/Infrared (IR) communication scheme that leverages pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols in both VL and IR spectra, alternating them within pulse width modulation (PWM) "ON" and "OFF" slots. By efficiently using PWM "OFF" slots, the achievable data rate drop due to dimming is mitigated without affecting illumination. To ensure synchronization during the switch between VL and IR links, we design real-time dimming control state machines at both ends of the link, enhancing link stability. Additionally, we develop an adaptive hybrid frame structure that dynamically adjusts the length of transmitted information as the duty cycle continuously changes, ensuring uninterrupted communication. Experimental results from implementation using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) demonstrate real-time transmission under precise full-range dimming control, dynamically ranging from 1 to 0 with a resolution of 0.0053, maintaining a consistent 10 Mb/s data rate at bit error rates (BERs) lower than 3.4 × 10−4 and 20 Mb/s at BERs lower than 7.0 × 10−3 within a link range of 0.53 m without light concentration at the transmitter. Compared to baseline VLC, our system achieves a 100% data rate improvement at a duty cycle of 0.5, and supports stable data transmission even in low-light conditions.

Abstract:Nowadays, long-distance data transmission is one of the key features for remote sensing systems such as seismic exploration. In these kinds of systems, ordinary twisted pair is more suitable than fiber optics because of working environments or limited costs. But there are two limitations as long distance and data transmission speed which are not easy to be improved in these systems. We designed and realized a high-speed data transmission system (thereinafter referred to as LHS) based on long range Ethernet technique and self-defined protocol with the help of FPGA hardware real-time processing. In this system, we only use the lowest level of physical transmission protocol in OSI reference model just for the high real-time performance. Vanishing of TCP/IP protocol which is widely used in normal Ethernet system simplifies the design and realization of transmission system greatly. Applying a DSP-based pre-emphasis and equalization to its transmitted data, this system can drive CAT-6 twisted pair lines with length of 220 meters at 100Mbps data speed. Furthermore, this system is real-time, stable and low-cost. The scheme proposed here can be used in related remote sensing systems.

Abstract:A real-time high-speed visible light communication (VLC) system based on RGB-LEDs is proposed in this paper. With the use of the wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), the system enables three individual color channels. The physical layer of the system is based on time-domain synchronous OFDM (TDS-OFDM) technology. Digital pre-distortion method also is applied to improve the SNR performance. Experiment demonstration shows that the proposed system can achieve a peak transmission data rate of 544.32 Mbps in real time with 256-order constellation, transmitting three individual 4K ultra-high-definition television (UHDTV) signals at the same time. The proposed system is proven to be sufficient for wireless indoor multimedia communication requirements.

Abstract:The utilization of probabilistic shaping (PS) techniques effectively mitigates the average power of the transmitted signal by optimizing modulation mapping schemes, which helps to improve the resistance of the wireless transmission system to the nonlinear effect induced by envelope detection. In this work, we have experimentally demonstrated FPGA-based real-time photonics-assisted W-band with envelope detection 23 Gb/s PS 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (64QAM) discrete multi-tone (DMT) signals over 40.5-m wireless link. In addition, an intra-symbol two-stage bit-weighted distribution matching-based PS-64QAM scheme was implemented based on FPGA to alleviate nonlinear damage caused by envelope detector. This PS-64QAM scheme has the advantages of no complex multiplication, division operations and low hardware implementation complexity. According to experimental results, by adopting our proposed PS-64QAM scheme, the receiver sensitivity can be significantly improved. This study demonstrates the attainment of the greatest wireless range to date through FPFA-based real-time photonics millimeter wave envelope detection for wireless communication. The results underscore the feasibility of integrating millimeter wave photonics, electronics, and advanced DSP algorithms to accomplish high-speed wireless communication over long distances in real time. This will provide important assistance for our future work in real-time photonics- assisted millimeter wave wireless communication.

Abstract:In order to facilitate the analysis and processing of optical signals, an FPGA-based CCD signal acquisition and data transmission system is designed in this work. The system uses an FPGA as the main control device, the TCD1304DG/AP chip as the optical signal detector, and the CYUSB3KIT-003 development board product by Cypress for data transmission. Verilog and Python languages are employed for modular design and on-board verification. Through the coordination of each module, the system successfully achieves CCD signal data acquisition and transmission.

Abstract:The escalating demand for greater transmission capacities in the forthcoming 6 G communication landscapes necessitates the investigation of upper segments of the electromagnetic spectrum by both academic institutions and the industrial sector. This effort aims to circumvent the impending spectrum resource limitations. Against this backdrop, laser diodes (LDs) emerge as a critical technology for high-speed visible light communication (VLC), owing to their significant modulation bandwidth potential. This paper details what we believe to be a novel visible light laser communication (VLLC) system powered by red/green/blue (RGB) tricolor laser diodes. It highlights a successful 100-meter free-space transmission achieved through a time domain hybrid huffman coding (TDHHC) technique. The system's performance review unveiled impressive data transmission rates for the red, green, and blue laser diodes channels at 16.852 Gbps, 14.442 Gbps, and 15.755 Gbps, respectively, culminating in a cumulative transmission rate of 47.049 Gbps while maintaining a bit error rate (BER) beneath the stringent threshold of 3.8E-3, mandated by 7% hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) standards. As far as we known, this marks the highest data rate documented in a long-distance tricolor VLLC system.
