Abstract:In this note we establish a new discreteness criterion for a non-elementary group G in SL(2, C). Namely, G is discrete if all the two-generator subgroups are discrete, where one generator is a non-trivial element f in G, and the other is in the conjugacy class of f.

Abstract:In this paper, we give discreteness criteria of subgroups of the special linear group on ℚ p or ℂ p in two and higher dimensions. Jørgensen’s inequality gives a necessary condition for a non-elementary group of Möbius transformations to be discrete. We give a version of Jørgensen’s inequality for SL( m ,ℂ p ).

Abstract:In the paper (Osaka J. Math. {\bf 46}: 403-409, 2009), Yang conjectured that a non-elementary subgroup $G$ of $SL(2, \bc)$ containing elliptic elements is discrete if for each elliptic element $g\in G$ the group $< f, g >$ is discrete, where $f\in SL(2,\bc)$ is a test map which is loxodromic or elliptic. The purpose of this paper is to give an affirmative answer to this question.

Abstract:Let G be a connected compact Lie group. Among other things, we prove that the following are equivalent. (a) For all connected compact Lie groups H and all continuous homomorphisms phi, phi' V H -> G, if phi(h) and phi'(h) are conjugate in G for all h epsilon H, then phi and phi' are G-conjugate. (b) The Lie algebra of G contains no simple ideal of type D-n (n >= 4), E-6, E-7, or E-8.

Abstract:We prove two results on some special generators of finite simple groups and use them to prove that every non-abelian finite simple group $S$ admits a non-congruence presentation (as conjectured in [CLT24]), and that if $S$ has a non-trivial Schur multiplier, then it admits a smooth cover (as conjectured in [CFLZ]).

Abstract:In this note, we classify the conjugacy classes of $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$, the universal covering group of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. For any non-central element $\alpha \in \widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$, we show that its conjugacy class may be determined by three invariants: (i) Trace: the trace (valued in the set of positive real numbers $\mathbb{R}_{+}$) of its image $\overline{\alpha}$ in $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$; (ii) Direction type: the sign behavior of the induced self-homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}$ determined by the lifting $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R}) \curvearrowright \mathbb{R}$ of the action $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R}) \curvearrowright \mathbb{S}^{1}$; (iii) The function $\ell^{\sharp}$: a conjugacy invariant length function introduced by S. Mochizuki [Res. Math. Sci. 3 (2016), 3:6].

Abstract:The structures of finite groups having at most two conjugacy classes of non-trivial cyclic sub-groups are completely characterized.It is proven that a finite non-solvable group G having at most four conjugacy classes of non-trivial cyclic subgroups must be isomorphic to PSL2 (r ),where r =5,7,8,9.

Abstract:We provide algorithms to decide whether a finitely generated subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ is discrete, solve the constructive membership problem for finitely generated discrete subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$, and compute a fundamental domain for a finitely generated Fuchsian group. These algorithms have been implemented in Magma for groups defined over real algebraic number fields.

Abstract:This paper continues the study of two numbers that are associated with Lie groups. The first number is $N(G,m)$, the number of conjugacy classes of elements in $G$ whose order divides $m$. The second number is $N(G,m,s)$, the number of conjugacy classes of elements in $G$ whose order divides $m$ and which have $s$ distinct eigenvalues, where we view $G$ as a matrix group in its smallest-degree faithful representation. We describe systematic algorithms for computing both numbers for $G$ a connected and simply-connected exceptional Lie group. We also provide explicit results for all of $N(G,m)$, $N(G_2,m,s)$, and $N(F_4,m,s)$. The numbers $N(G,m,s)$ were previously known only for the classical Lie groups; our results for $N(G,m)$ agree with those already in the literature but are obtained differently.

Abstract:We develop a framework for common commensurators of discrete subgroups of lattices in isometry groups of CAT(0) spaces. We show that the Greenberg-Shalom hypothesis about discreteness of common commensurators of Zariski dense subgroups and lattices fails in this generality, even if one imposes strong finiteness conditions. We analyze some examples due to Burger and Mozes in this context and show that they have discrete common commensurator.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group. The question of how certain arithmetical conditions on the lengths of the conjugacy classes of G influence the group structure has been studied by several authors. In this paper we study restrictions on the structure of a finite group in which the lengths of conjugacy classes are not divisible by p(2) for some prime p. We generalise and provide simplified proofs for some earlier results.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group and $\Gamma<G$ be its Zariski dense discrete subgroup. We prove that if $\Gamma\backslash G$ admits any finite Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure, then $\Gamma$ is virtually a product of higher rank lattices and discrete subgroups of rank one factors of $G$. This may be viewed as a measure-theoretic analogue of classification of convex cocompact actions by Kleiner-Leeb and Quint, which was conjectured by Corlette in 1994. The key ingredients in our proof are the product structure of leafwise measures and the high entropy method of Einsiedler-Katok-Lindenstrauss. In a companion paper jointly with Edwards and Oh, we use this result to show that the bottom of the $L^2$ spectrum has no atom in any infinite volume quotient of a higher rank simple algebraic group.

Conjugacy classes of derangements in finite groups of Lie type

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite almost simple group of Lie type acting faithfully and primitively on a set $\Omega$. We prove an analogue of the Boston--Shalev conjecture for conjugacy classes: the proportion of conjugacy classes of $G$ consisting of derangements is bounded away from zero. This answers a question of Guralnick and Zalesski. The proof is based on results on the anatomy of palindromic polynomials over finite fields (with either reflective symmetry or conjugate-reflective symmetry).

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a class of groups. A group $X$ is said to be residually a $\mathcal{C}$-group (conjugacy $\mathcal{C}$-separable) if, for any elements $x,y \in X$ that are not equal (not conjugate in $X$), there exists a homomorphism $\sigma$ of $X$ onto a group from $\mathcal{C}$ such that the elements $x\sigma$ and $y\sigma$ are still not equal (respectively, not conjugate in $X\sigma$). A generalized Baumslag-Solitar group or GBS-group is the fundamental group of a finite connected graph of groups whose all vertex and edge groups are infinite cyclic. An ordinary Baumslag-Solitar group is the GBS-group that corresponds to a graph containing only one vertex and one loop. Suppose that the class $\mathcal{C}$ consists of periodic groups and is closed under taking subgroups and unrestricted wreath products. We prove that a non-solvable GBS-group is conjugacy $\mathcal{C}$-separable if and only if it is residually a $\mathcal{C}$-group. We also find a criterion for a solvable GBS-group to be conjugacy $\mathcal{C}$-separable. As a corollary, we prove that an arbitrary GBS-group is conjugacy (finite) separable if and only if it is residually finite.

Discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups, beyond lattices

Abstract:Discrete subgroups of SL(2,R) are well understood, and classified by the geometry of the corresponding hyperbolic surfaces. Discrete subgroups of higher-rank semisimple Lie groups, such as SL(n,R) for n>2, remain more mysterious. While lattices in this setting are rigid, there also exist more flexible, "thinner" discrete subgroups, which may have large and interesting deformation spaces, giving rise in particular to so-called higher Teichm\"uller theory. We survey recent progress in constructing and understanding such discrete subgroups from a geometric and dynamical viewpoint.

We provide various constraints on the group structure, the nature of the action, and on the measure of fixed point sets, that imply that the subgroup topology is not discrete. Generation by conjugate elements of finite almost simple groups with a sporadic socle

Abstract:As defined by Guralnick and Saxl given a nonabelian simple group $S$ and its nonidentity automorphism $x$, a natural number $\alpha_S(x)$ does not exceed a natural number $m$ if some $m$ conjugates of $x$ in the group $\langle x,S\rangle$ generate a subgroup that includes $S$. The outcome of this paper together with one by Di Martino, Pellegrini, and Zalesski, both of which are based on computer calculations with character tables, is a refinement of the estimates by Guralnick and Saxl on the value of $\alpha_S(x)$ in the case where $S$ is a sporadic group. In particular, we prove that $\alpha_S(x)\leqslant 4$, except when $S$ is one of the Fischer groups and $x$ is a $3$-transposition. In the latter case, $\alpha_S(x)=6$ if $S$ is either $Fi_{22}$ or $Fi_{23}$ and $\alpha_S(x)=5$ if $S={Fi_{24}}'$.

A weak version of the McKay correspondence for cyclic quotient singularities

Abstract:Let G be a finite subgroup of SL(n,C). If a quotient variety C^n/G has a crepant resolution, then its Euler number equals to the number of conjugacy classes of G, which is a weak version of the McKay correspondence. In this paper, we generalize this correspondence to a finite cyclic group of GL(n,C). We construct this correspondence using certain toric resolutions obtained through continued fractions.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a categorical double quantum Heisenberg action on the representation category of finite classical groups $\mathrm{O}_{2n+1}(q)$, $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(q)$ and $\mathrm{O}^{\pm}_{2n}(q)$ with $q$ odd. Over a field of characteristic zero or characteristic $\ell$ with $\ell\nmid q(q-1)$, we deduce a categorical action of a Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}'_{I_+}\oplus\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}'_{I_-}$ on the representation category of finite classical groups. We show that the colored weight functions $\mathbb{O}^+(u)(\bullet)$, $\mathbb{O}^-(v)(\bullet)$ and uniform projection can distinguish all irreducible characters of finite classical groups. In particular, the colored weight functions are complete invariants of quadratic unipotent characters of finite classical groups. We also show that using the theta correspondence and extra symmetries of categorical double quantum Heisenberg action, the Kac-Moody action on the Grothendieck group of the whole category can be determined explicitly.
