Abstract:It is the main objective of this paper to show a vanishing result for cuspidal cohomology of arithmetic groups in classical groups~$G$ defined over some number field~$k$.Our approach relies on the fact that cuspidal automorphic forms are nonsingular in the sense of Howe. This result puts a strong constraint on the (archimedean components of) irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of $G$that can possibly contribute to the cuspidal cohomology. Combining this with the classification of Vogan-Zuckerman of unitary representations with nonzero cohomologyprovides a constant $r_0(G/k)$, only depending on $G/k$, below which the cuspidal cohomology vanishes. We will give a formula for this constant for each classical group of type (I) in the classification scheme due to Weil. We conclude with making this result explicit for some split classical groups over a totally real algebraic number field.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:Let π be some set of primes. A subgroup H of a finite group G is called a Hall π-subgroup if any prime divisor of the order |H| of the subgroup H belongs to π and the index |G: H| is not a multiple of any number in π. The famous Hall theorem states that a solvable finite group always contains a Hall π-subgroup and any two Hall π-subgroups of such group are conjugate. The converse of the Hall theorem is also true: for any nonsolvable group G, there exists a set π such that G does not contain Hall π-subgroups. Nevertheless, Hall π-subgroups may exist in a nonsolvable group. There are examples of sets π such that, in any finite group containing a Hall π-subgroup, all Hall π-subgroups are conjugate (and, as a consequence, are isomorphic). In 1987 F. Gross showed that any set π of odd primes has this property. In addition, in nonsolvable groups for some sets π, Hall π-subgroups can be nonconjugate but isomorphic (say, in PSL2(7) for π = {2, 3}) and even nonisomorphic (in PSL2(11) for π = {2, 3}). We prove that the existence of a finite group with nonconjugate Hall π-subgroups for a set π implies the existence of a group with nonisomorphic Hall π-subgroups. The converse statement is obvious.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\pi$ be a set of primes. In this paper, we prove a criterion for the existence of a solvable $\pi$-Hall subgroup of $G$, precisely, the group $G$ has a solvable $\pi$-Hall subgroup if, and only if, $G$ has a $\{p,q\}$-Hall subgroup for any pair $p$, $q\in\pi$.

A subgroup [math] of [math] is called Hall normally embedded in [math] if [math] is a Hall subgroup of [math], where [math] is the normal closure of [math] in [math], that is, the smallest normal subgroup of [math] containing [math]. A group [math] is called a [math]-group if its all minimal subgroups and cyclic subgroup of order [math] are Hall normally embedded in [math]. In this paper, we give the classification of minimal non-[math]-groups. Furthermore, we investigate the structure of finite group all of whose maximal subgroups of even order are [math]-groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $\pi$ be a set of primes. The aim of this paper is to obtain some results concerning how much information about the $\pi$-structure of $G$ can be gathered from the knowledge of the lengths of conjugacy classes of its $\pi$-elements and of their multiplicities. Among other results, we prove that this multiset of class lengths determine whether $G$ has a hypercentral Hall $\pi$-subgroup.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and 3 a formation of finite groups. We say that a subgroup H of G is J(h)-normal in G if there exists a normal subgroup T of G such that TIT is a normal Hall subgroup of G and (H boolean AND T)H-G/H-G is contained in the J-hypercenter Z(infinity)J(G/H-G) of G/HG. In this paper, we obtain some results about the J(h)-normal subgroups and use them to study the structure of finite groups. Some new characterizations of supersoluble groups, soluble groups and p-nilpotent groups are obtained and some known results are generalized.

Abstract:We prove two results on some special generators of finite simple groups and use them to prove that every non-abelian finite simple group $S$ admits a non-congruence presentation (as conjectured in [CLT24]), and that if $S$ has a non-trivial Schur multiplier, then it admits a smooth cover (as conjectured in [CFLZ]).

Abstract:Let σ = { σ i : i ∈ I } be some partition of the set of all primes ℙ, G be a finite group and σ ( G ) = { σ i : σ i ∩ π( G )≠Ø}. A set H of subgroups of G is said to be a complete Hall σ -set of G if every non-identity member of H is a Hall σ i -subgroup of G and H contains exactly one Hall σ i -subgroup of G for every σ i ∈ σ (G). G is said to be σ -full if G possesses a complete Hall σ -set. A subgroup H of G is σ -permutable in G if G possesses a complete Hall σ -set H such that HA x = A x H for all A ∈ H and all x ∈ G . A subgroup H of G is σ -permutably embedded in G if H is σ -full and for every σ i ∈ σ ( H ), every Hall σ i -subgroup of H is also a Hall σ i -subgroup of some σ -permutable subgroup of G . By using the σ -permutably embedded subgroups, we establish some new criteria for a group G to be soluble and supersoluble, and also give the conditions under which a normal subgroup of G is hypercyclically embedded. Some known results are generalized.

Abstract:Let $\sigma =\{\sigma_{i} | i\in I\}$ be a partition of the set of all primes $\Bbb{P}$ and $G$ a finite group. Let $\sigma (G)=\{\sigma _{i} : \sigma _{i}\cap \pi (G)\ne \emptyset$. A set ${\cal H}$ of subgroups of $G$ is said to be a complete Hall $\sigma $-set of $G$ if every member $\ne 1$ of ${\cal H}$ is a Hall $\sigma _{i}$-subgroup of $G$ for some $i\in I$ and $\cal H$ contains exactly one Hall $\sigma _{i}$-subgroup of $G$ for every $i$ such that $\sigma _{i}\in \sigma (G)$. We say that $G$ is $\sigma$-full if $G$ possesses a complete Hall $\sigma $-set. A complete Hall $\sigma $-set $\cal H$ of $G$ is said to be a $\sigma$-basis of $G$ if every two subgroups $A, B \in\cal H$ are permutable, that is, $AB=BA$. In this paper, we study properties of finite groups having a $\sigma$-basis. In particular, we prove that if $G$ has a a $\sigma$-basis, then $G$ is generalized $\sigma$-soluble, that is, $G$ has a complete Hall $\sigma $-set and for every chief factor $H/K$ of $G$ we have $|\sigma (H/K)|\leq 2$. Moreover, answering to Problem 8.28 in [A.N. Skiba, On some results in the theory of finite partially soluble groups, Commun. Math. Stat., 4(3) (2016), 281--309], we prove the following Theorem A. Suppose that $G$ is $\sigma$-full. Then every complete Hall $\sigma$-set of $G$ forms a $\sigma$-basis of $G$ if and only if $G$ is generalized $\sigma$-soluble and for the automorphism group $G/C_{G}(H/K)$, induced by $G$ on any its chief factor $H/K$, we have either $\sigma (H/K)=\sigma (G/C_{G}(H/K))$ or $\sigma (H/K) =\{\sigma _{i}\}$ and $G/C_{G}(H/K)$ is a $\sigma _{i} \cup \sigma _{j}$-group for some $i\ne j$.

Abstract:We investigate the structure of the double Ringel-Hall algebras associated with cyclic quivers and its connections with quantum loop algebras of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, affine quantum Schur algebras and affine Hecke algebras. This includes their Drinfeld-Jimbo type presentation, affine quantum Schur-Weyl reciprocity, representations of affine quantum Schur algebras, and connections with various existing works by Lusztig, Varagnolo-Vasserot, Schiffmann, Hubery, Chari-Pressley, Frenkel-Mukhin, etc. We will also discuss conjectures on a realization of Beilinson-Lusztig-MacPherson type and Lusztig type integral forms for double Ringel-Hall algebras.

A finite group is said to be - primary if it is a -group for some , and we say that a finite group is - solvable if all its chief factors are -primary. A subgroup H of a finite group G is said to be - subnormal in G if there is a chain of subgroups of G such that is normal in or is -primary for all . Given subgroups H and A of a -solvable finite group G , we prove two criteria for H to be -subnormal in . Our criteria extend classical subnormality criteria of Fumagalli [5], which themselves generalize a classical subnormality criterion of Wielandt [13].

Abstract:If $H$ is a Hall subgroup of a finite group $G$, it was proven in 1989 using the classification of finite simple groups that all the irreducible complex characters of $H$ extend to $G$ if and only if there is $N\trianglelefteq G$ such that $HN=G$ and $H\cap N=1$. In this note we offer a modular version of this result under more general hypothesis.

Abstract:Let σ ={σ _i | i∈ I} be some partition of the set ℙ of all primes and G a finite group. A set ℋ of subgroups of G is said to be a complete Hall σ -set of G if every member 1 of ℋ is a Hall σ _i -subgroup of G for some i∈ I and ℋ contains exactly one Hall σ _i -subgroup of G for every i such that σ _i∩π (G)∅ . A subgroup A of G is said to be ℋ -permutable if A permutes with all members of the complete Hall σ -set ℋ of G . Abstract:As a sequel to our recent work on Casselman--Shahidi's holomorphicity conjecture on half-normalized intertwining operators for quasi-split classical groups, we modify our method, based on a lemma of Heiermann--Opdam, to prove certain cases of the conjecture for groups of exceptional type uniformly. One main ingredient, established here, is to find an algorithm to produce reduced decompositions of co-rank one relative longest Weyl elements, in terms of certain "small" counterparts.
