It is found that the so-called collar wave is a kind of guide wave resembling the borehole Stoneley wave, which is not confined to the drill collar but radiates significant energy to the outside media in the radial direction. The collar wave actually recorded at the outer surface of the drill collar is a superposition of the out-going wave radiated from the drill collar and the reflected wave going back from the borehole wall. Thus its characteristics are determined by not only the drill collar structure but also the borehole structure. With a grooved drill collar, the collar wave converts to Stoneley waves at the grooves, having long durations and interfering with the formation waves. Thus all the interference waves including the out-going and reflected collar waves and the converted Stoneley wave should be overall considered for formation wave extraction. Grooving offers two contributions: one is to broaden the stop-band for the collar wave, and the other is to weaken the interference waves by reflecting them up and down the drill collar. The internal grooving is an optimal manner in comparison because the converted inner Stoneley wave is concentrated on the internal surface so that only a small quantity arrives in the receivers on the outer surface. An appropriate increase of the groove numbers effectively weakens the interference waves, while deep grooves are not helpful but even harmful resulting in more converted Stoneley wave at the grooves.
