Abstract:We have performed a systematical investigation on the pressure-induced phase transitions between zinc-blende and cinnabar phase for group IIB–VIA compounds: ZnTe, CdTe, and HgTe by ab initio plane-wave pseudopotential density functional theory (DFT). The calculations are performed within the local density approximation (LDA) in the scheme of Ceperley–Alder parametrized by Perdew and Zunger (CA–PZ). The obtained ground state properties and equation of state agree well with the available experimental data and calculated results. The transition pressures Pt are determined through both the analysis of enthalpy variation with pressure and the slope of the common tangent of the energy–volume curves. The linear-response approach is used to calculate the phonon dispersions, which agree well with the experiments. Finally, the thermodynamic properties such as the free energy (F), the enthalpy (H), entropy (S) and heat capacity (Cv) are obtained successfully from the phonon density of state.
Semiconductor-metal Transition in Lead Iodide under Pressure

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor lead iodide (PbI2) has recently attracted considerable attention owing to its favorable properties in both applications as photodetectors and as a precursor for lead halide perovskite solar cells. Although earlier experiments have investigated the structural stability of PbI2 below 20 GPa, the electric structures at high pressure remain ambiguous, as does the crystal structure at higher pressures. Herein, a structural phase transition and a semiconductor-metal transition are revealed in PbI2 through high-pressure femtosecond optical pump-probe spectroscopy combined with Raman spectra, synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), and resistance measurements up to 70 GPa. Two discontinuities appear in the pressure-dependent amplitude of the ultrafast spectroscopy at approximately 24.8 and 37.6 GPa. Raman spectra and in situ XRD patterns confirm a structural phase transition from orthorhombic Pnma to tetragonal I4/MMM symmetry at the first discontinuity. The second discontinuity is ascribed to the closure of the bandgap and the enhanced electron-phonon interaction across the semiconductor-metal transition, which is also revealed by the temperature dependencies of resistance for PbI2 under pressure. Our results not only help to design optical devices based on lead iodide but also highlight that ultrafast spectroscopy is an efficient noncontact tool to investigate the crystalline and electric phase transition under pressures simultaneously.
Theoretical Calculations of Phase Transitions and Optical Properties of Solid Iodine under High Pressures

Abstract:The structural stability and optical properties of solid iodine under pressure have been studied using the ab initio pseudopotential plane-wave method. The dependence of lattice parameters on pressure indicates that the first structural phase transition from phase I to phase V occurs at about 20 GPa. From the pressure dependence of our elastic constants for solid iodine in phase I, it is found that the first structural transformation from molecular phase I to the intermediate phase V occurs at about 20 GPa due to the softening of the elastic constant C-44, which is very close to the transition pressure of 20 GPa obtained by geometry optimizations and 23.2 GPa obtained by experimental measurements. The optimized structure for phase V is a face-centered orthorhombic (fco) phase with equal interatomic distances d(1) = d(2) = d(3), but this fco structure is mechanically unstable, with shear elastic stiffness coefficient C-44 < 0. To understand the modulated phase V, we use a periodic crystal structure to mimic the incommensurate phase V and obtain some quantitative information. In our calculation, the modulated phase is thermodynamically and mechanically stable. It is believed that phase V is not a monatomic phase but an intermediate state between a molecular and a monatomic state.
Pressure-induced Structural and Electronic Transitions in Bismuth Iodide

Abstract:Using a machine-learning accelerated crystal structural search, and ab initio calculations together with high-pressure Raman measurements, we study the crystal and electronic structures of bismuth iodide (BiI) systematically up to 50 GPa. We find that the ambient C2/m phase (beta-Bi4I4) transforms across a tetragonal P4(2)/mmc phase at 8.5 GPa and finally to a hexagonal P6(3)/mmc phase at 28.2 GPa. Our high-pressure Raman experiments identify a phase transition at around 8.6 GPa, and the experimental Raman modes evolution agrees with our calculations reasonably. Band-structures calculations suggest the BiI system undergoes a pressure-induced topological phase transition from a topological metal (P4(2)/mmc phase) to a trivial metal (the P6(3)/mmc phase). Our electron-phonon coupling calculations show both the P4(2)/mmc and P6(3)/mmc phases are superconductors and the estimated superconducting critical temperature agrees with previous measurements. Our study shows the previously reported pressure-induced superconductivity in BiI should originate from structure phase transitions.

Abstract:Pressure-induced electronic structure transition from insulating phase to metal state is a potential new paradigm for halide perovskites. The metallization based on these materials may afford a novel motif toward realizing new electronic properties even superconductivity phenomenon. Herein, how static compression modulates the crystal and electronic structure of typical perovskite semiconductors cesium lead iodine (CsPbI3) by both experimental and theoretical studies is reported. The comprehensive studies discover the insulator-metal transition of CsPbI3 at 39.3 GPa, and reveal the key information behind the electronic transition. The perovskite's precise structural evolution is tracked upon compression, from orthorhombic Pnma phase to monoclinic C2/m structure before the metallic transition. More interestingly, the C2/m phase has the most distorted octahedra and the shortest Pb-I bond length relative to the average bond length that is ever reported in a halide perovskite structure. The electronic transition stems from the structural changes accompanied by the anomalously self-distorted octahedra. These studies show that pressure can significantly alter the structural and electronic properties of these technologically important perovskites.

Abstract:2H-type lead iodide (PbI2) is a two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductor and has recently received considerable attention as a precursor for lead halide perovskite solar cells. Although the pressure-induced structural phase transitions of PbI2 have been investigated for several decades, the detailed crystalline structure of PbI2 at high pressure is still elusive because of lacking in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. In this report, in situ Raman spectra and XRD patterns of 2H-PbI2 under pressure have been investigated in a diamond-anvil cell. Both Raman spectra and XRD patterns provide consistent evidence for two structural phase transitions upon compression at approximately 0.58 and 2.6 GPa. The XRD patterns suggest that the complete pressure-driven phase transition sequence of PbI2 up to 20 GPa is two-dimensional hexagonal 2H- P 3 over bar m 1 & RARR;polytype 4H-P3m1 & RARR;three-dimensional (3D) orthorhombic Pnma. The uncovered 2D to 3D structural transition in 2H-PbI2 advances the understanding of structural stability of 2H-type layered semiconductors and lead halide perovskite.

Abstract:Pressure is an effective and clean way to modify the electronic structures of materials, cause structural phase transitions and even induce the emergence of superconductivity. Here, we predicted several new phases of the ZrXY family at high pressures using the crystal structures search method together with first-principle calculations. In particular, the ZrGeS compound undergoes an isosymmetric phase transition from P4/nmm-I to P4/nmm-II at approximately 82 GPa. Electronic band structures show that all the high-pressure phases are metallic. Among these new structures, P4/nmm-II ZrGeS and P4/mmm ZrGeSe can be quenched to ambient pressure with superconducting critical temperatures of approximately 8.1 K and 8.0 K, respectively. Our study provides a way to tune the structure, electronic properties, and superconducting behavior of topological materials through pressure.

Abstract:In regards to the crystal structure of the halogen compound iodine chloride (ICl), only the experimental and theoretical structure P21/c under ambient pressure is known up to now. However, the insulator material under ambient pressure may have a metal phase transition under high pressure, resulting in more excellent properties. Here, by employing the first-principles computations and the Crystal structure AnaLYsis with Particle Swarm Optimization (CALYPSO) structure prediction technique, we studied the structure and electronic properties of ICl under high pressure. The phase sequence of ICl was established, and two high-pressure phases (Imma and P4/mmm) with six and eight coordinations, respectively, were proposed. The structure optimization demonstrated that ICl sustained the following phase transitions at high pressure: P21/c→Imma→P4/mmm, which occurred at ~14 GPa and ~46 GPa, respectively. We also found that the P21/c phase was a mixed compound containing both covalent and ionic bonds, and the Imma and P4/mmm phases were ionic compounds. Finally, the mechanical and dynamical stabilities of all phases were confirmed by the calculations.

Abstract:The pressure-induced tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition of PbTiO3 is investigated in the pressure range of −5 to 35GPa using the density-functional theory with the local density approximation. The spontaneous polarization and spontaneous strain, calculated as the order parameters, are found to decrease abruptly at 32GPa, while the volume of the unit cell to decrease continuously, displaying a non-purely first-order character consistent with the experimental results. The structural explanation for the crossover in the order of the phase transition in PbTiO3 (from first to second order) is generally discussed in terms of the bonding structure.

Abstract:Based on crystal structural search and ab initio calculations, we report pressure-induced structural and electronic phase transitions for the semiconductor indium tellurium iodine (InTeI). We have found two structures belonging to the same space group of InTeI at high pressure (labeled as $P4/nmm\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{I}$ and $P4/nmm\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{II}$, respectively), where $P4/nmm\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{II}$ is metastable. Our calculation results show that the ambient $P{2}_{1}/c$ phase transforms to a tetragonal $P4/nmm\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{I}$ phase at about 15 GPa, characterized by the appearance of metallization and superconductivity with ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ of around 7 K. Besides, band-structure calculations suggest that the InTeI system undergoes a pressure-induced electronic phase transition from a direct to indirect band gap in the $P{2}_{1}/c$ phase. On the application of atomic substitution, the superconducting temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ of InTeI can be further raised to around 9.7 K if the iodine atoms are replaced by the lighter chlorine atoms in the $P4/nmm\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{I}$ phase. The results pave the way for applying of Indium tellurohalide in optoelectronic devices and demonstrate a method that adjusts electronic properties by pressure or atomic substitution.

Abstract:There is a great interest in the behavior of diatomic molecular solids under extremely high-pressure conditions that lead to pressure-induced metallization, molecular dissociation, and formation of atomic phase. The consensus has been that the phase-transition sequence that happened in both solid bromine and iodine is from a molecular phase (phase I), to an incommensurate phase (phase V), and then to an atomic phase (phase II), with increasing pressure. However, a puzzle remains unresolved for both solids: pressure-induced X and Y bands were observed in the Raman spectra in the molecular phase at low pressures, even before the onset of phase V. Here, we suggest a phase for solid iodine in such a low-pressure range (designated as phase I') in which two different covalent intramolecular bonds coexist, based on first-principles calculations and later corroborated by x-ray diffraction experiments. The pressure dependence of the X and Y bands and other vibrational frequencies measured experimentally can be explained nicely by combining the vibrational modes of phase I and phase I'. These results help improve our understanding on the pressure-induced molecular dissociation and metallization in diatomic solids and may shed some light on the investigation of similar phenomena in solid H(2).

Abstract:Lead phosphate Pb3(PO4)2 was investigated by in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) combined with diamond anvil cell technique up to 60.9 GPa. A pressure-induced phase transition of Pb3(PO4)2 was observed from monoclinic (C2/c) to trigonal () phases at about 1.7 GPa at room temperature. The high-pressure annealing experiment indicates that the trigonal phase of Pb3(PO4)2 is stable at least up to 60.9 GPa. Isothermal pressure–volume relationship of trigonal Pb3(PO4)2 is well described by the third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state with V0 = 533(1) Å3, K0 = 89(4) GPa and K0′ = 5.8(2). In trigonal Pb3(PO4)2, the a-axis is more compressible than the c-axis, showing an anisotropy elasticity. XANES results reveal the evolution of Pb local environment, i.e. the first-shell coordination number of Pb1 changes from 9 to 12 and the average Pb–O bond length increases at the crossover of C2/c-to- phase transition.

Abstract:Properties of materials are rather interesting under pressure, and much attention has been paid to structural transition induced by pressure. Here the high-pressure behavior of CF4 has been investigated between 0 and 150GPa using the first-principles methods. Two structures with C2/c and P21/c symmetries are stable at 0–4.8 and 4.8–22.1GPa. The lattice parameters agree with the experimental results. Besides, another low-enthalpy structure with space group I4¯2m is favored above 108.3GPa. Phonon calculations also confirm its dynamical stability. This new high pressure phase of CF4 may therefore stimulate the experimental work. The electronic structures indicate that CF4 is a molecular solid under very high pressure.

Abstract:As a fundamental thermodynamic variable, pressure can alter the bonding patterns and drive phase transitions leading to the creation of new high-pressure phases with exotic properties that are inaccessible at ambient pressure. Using the swarm intelligence structural prediction method, the phase transition of TiF3, from R–3c to the Pnma phase, was predicted at high pressure, accompanied by the destruction of TiF6 octahedra and formation of TiF8 square antiprismatic units. The Pnma phase of TiF3, formed using the laser-heated diamond-anvil-cell technique was confirmed via high-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments. Furthermore, the in situ electrical measurements indicate that the newly found Pnma phase has a semiconducting character, which is also consistent with the electronic band structure calculations. Finally, it was shown that this pressure-induced phase transition is a general phenomenon in ScF3, VF3, CrF3, and MnF3, offering valuable insights into the high-pressure phases of transition metal trifluorides.

Abstract:The pressure-induced structural evolution of formamidinium-based perovskite FAPbI(3) was investigated using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and laser excited photoluminescence methods. Cubic alpha-FAPbI(3) (P-m(3) over bar (m)) partially and irreversibly transformed to hexagonal delta-FAPbI(3) (P6(3)mc) at a pressure less than 0.1 GPa. Structural transitions of alpha-FAPbI(3) followed the sequence of Pm (3) over barm -> P4/mbm -> Im (3) over bar -> partial amorphous during compression to 6.59 GPa, whereas the delta-phase converted to an orthorhombic Cmc2(1) structure between 1.26 and 1.73 GPa. During decompression, FAPbI3 recovered the P63mc structure of the 6-phase as a minor component (similar to 18 wt %) from 2.41-1.40 GPa and the Pm (3) over barm structure of the alpha-phase becomes dominant (similar to 82 wt %) at 0.10 GPa but with an increased fraction of delta-FAPbI(3). The photoluminescence behaviors from both the alpha- and delta-forms were likely controlled by radiative recombination at the defect levels rather than band-edge emission during pressure cycling. FAPbI3 polymorphism is exquisitely sensitive to pressure. While modest pressures can engineer FAPbI(3)-based photovoltaic devices, irreversible delta-phase crystallization may be a limiting factor and should be taken into account.

Abstract:Using a swarm intelligence structure search method combining with first-principles calculations, three new structures of Zn–I and Hg–I compounds are discovered and pressure-composition phase diagrams are determined. An interesting phenomenon is found, that is, the compounds that are stable at 0 GPa in both systems will decompose into their constituent elements under certain pressure, which is contrary to the general intuition that pressure always makes materials more stability and density. A detailed analysis of the decomposition mechanism reveals the increase of formation enthalpy with the increase of pressure due to contributions from both Δ U and Δ[ PV ]. Pressure-dependent studies of the Δ V demonstrate that denser materials tend to be stabilized at higher pressures. Additionally, charge transfer calculations show that external pressure is more effective in regulating the ionic bond of Hg–I, resulting in a lower decomposition pressure for HgI 2 than for ZnI 2 . These findings have important implications for designs and syntheses of new materials, as they challenge the conventional understanding on how pressure affects stability.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites undergo pressure-induced phase transition, facilitated by bond compressions and different tilt patterns of the PbI6 octahedra. Utilizing first-principles calculations we investigated 14 possible tilt systems of CH3NH3PbI3 under compression, derived from the high-symmetry Pm (3) over barm structure. Fr substitution is adopted to mimic the rotational disorder effect of the CH3NH3 cation with the similar size (at room temperature or higher). Analyses of these phases reveal an interplay between tilting and distortion of the PbI6 octahedra. Dynamical fluctuations at finite temperature provide additional insight into the phases' stability. Drawing from the trends observed in FrPbI3 and additional calculations for perovskites involving differently ordered organic cations, we propose that phase transition in CH3NH3PbI3 occurs from tetragonal at ambient pressure to orthorhombic under high pressure via the pathway I4/mcm -> P4/mbm -> Imm2. The distinct discontinuity in the calculated volume-pressure curve of I4/mcm and band-gap evolution of the proposed phases are consistent with photoluminescence shifts observed in CH3NH3PbI3 under pressure.

Abstract:The structural transformation of cesium lead iodine (CsPbI3) has been investigated in diamond anvil cells up to similar to 15 GPa at room temperature by employing synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. One reversible transformation from orthorhombic (Pnma) to monoclinic (P2(1)/m) phase has been observed at 3.9 GPa. Isothermal pressure-volume relationship of orthorhombic CsPbI3 is well fitted by the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state with K-0 = 14(3) GPa, K'(0) = 6(2) and V-0 = 891(7) angstrom(3). The ultralow value of bulk modulus K-0 demonstrates the high compressible nature of CsPbI3, similar to those of organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites. The present results provide essential information on the intrinsic properties and stability of CsPbI3, which may be applied in photovoltaic devices.
Ab Initio Investigation of Pressure-Induced Structural Transitions and Electronic Evolution of Th3N4

Abstract:The crystal structures, lattice dynamics, mechanical, electronic properties, and electron-phonon coupling of under environmental conditions and high pressures have been studied by merging first-principles calculations and particle-swarm optimization algorithm. Four structures are identified for , including the , , , and C2/m phases, in which the , , and C2/m phases are newly predicted. Their mechanical properties, including the Poisson's ratio sigma, the elastic anisotropy factor , and the Pugh's ratio have been calculated and discussed. The results show that the , , and phases of behave ductile nature, while the C2/m phase behaves brittle nature. Among them, the phase of almost exhibits completely anisotropic nature. Besides, our electronic band structure calculations show that the pressure-induced semiconductor-metal transition occurs following the to phase transition. Further, the electron-phonon coupling of the phase has been analyzed. The results we obtained are of significance to further understand the physical essence of and its practical engineering applications.
