Abstract:Self-cleaning surfaces have received a great deal of attention recently, both in theoretical studies and commercial applications. Lotus flowers are a symbol of purity in Asian cultures; even though they grow in muddy waters, they remain clean and uncontaminated. The “self-cleaning” surface of their leaves is hydrophobic and rough, showing a micro- and nano-scale morphology. The micro-reliefs of lotus leaves are mimicked by using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film and the nano-scale peaks on top of the micro-reliefs are implemented by a reaction between CH3SiCl3 and the reactive groups of the PVDF film treated by oxygen plasma. A lotus leaf-like surface of the PVDF film is clearly observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Elemental composition analysis by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals that the material of the nanostructure of the PVDF film is polymethylsiloxane. The superhydrophobic property of the mimicked self-cleaning surface is validated by the water contact and sliding angles on the lotus leaf-like PVDF film, which are 165°and 4°, respectively. In this case, water drops can easily move off the PVDF surface, carrying dust away and leaving a clean surface

Abstract:The present work reports on a new strategy for fabrication of mechanically stable and environmental‐friendly superhydrophobic surfaces. First, a novel cost‐effective approach is developed to synthesize superhydrophobic SiO2 (SH‐SiO2) nanoparticles at room temperature through the reaction between the surface reactive groups on commercial SiO2 nanoparticles and the long‐chain alkyl fluorine‐free organosilane. Then, the superhydrophobic films are constructed by electrophoresis of SH‐SiO2 nanoparticles into a matrix of robust and highly porous electrodeposited silica film. The as‐prepared superhydrophobic composite surfaces exhibit high abrasion resistance, excellent repellency even to hot water droplet, and good self‐cleaning properties in either air or oil environment.
Fabricating Superhydrophobic and Oleophobic Surface with Silica Nanoparticles Modified by Silanes and Environment-Friendly Fluorinated Chemicals

Abstract:Fluorinated polymers or fluorinated chemicals are often used to enhance the hydrophobicity and oleophobicity of surfaces. In this work, amphiphobic coating surfaces of silica nanoparticles modified by methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), ethyltriethoxysilane (ETES) or/and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (HFOTES) were fabricated via a sol-gel process. The results demonstrated that the surface wettability of coatings was greatly influenced by the type of silanes which were used to modify silica, and superhydrophobic and oil-repellent coating surface was obtained by using silica co-modified by MTMS and HFOTES (MF-SiO2). The water contact angles of dip-coated MF-SiO2 coatings could reach to 150.2 degrees with the lowest angle of water hysteresis (3.3 degrees) among all samples. One reason was that the addition of MTMS changed the holes structures of F-SiO2, and the co-modified surface of MF-SiO2 formed the multi-scale rough structures. Moreover, the percentage of fluorine at the surfaces for sample MF-SiO2 was greatly increased due to the packing of -CF3 groups on surface. In other words, the addition of MTMS influenced the outmost layer of coating and changed the distribution of fluorinated chemical groups for sample MF-SiO2. Therefore, the coating for sample MF-SiO2 could exhibit superhydrophobic and oil-repellent properties owing to the multi-scale surface roughness as well as the packing of -CF3 groups on the outmost layer of surface. Facile, scalable and Substrate-Independent omniphobic surface

Abstract:Omniphobic surfaces have a very wide range of applications. However, limited by substrate material and/or fabrication processes, scalable synthesis of robust omniphobic surfaces with universality and versatility remains challenging for both academia and industry. Here, we present a facile and scalable slippery omniphobic surface (FSSOS) based on the straightforward blending and dip/spray-coating of polysilazane (PSZ) and minute low surface energy silane under room temperature. Water shows a contact angle hysteresis (CAH) of 18°, and the overall trend across all tested solvents suggests a relatively low CAH (<10°), further enhancing its surface omniphobicity. The one-step synthesis protocol is cost-effective, substrate-independent, and does not require curing aids such as UV irradiation or heat. The FSSOS achieves multi-liquid omni-repellency with chemical and mechanical durability under various harsh exposure conditions. The CAH remains stable even after exposure to 4 m/s water jet impact for 8 h, 130 W ultrasonic vibration for 250 min, 10 kPa pressure tape-peel test for 250 cycles, heating at 250 °C for 10 min, and 205 mW/cm 2 UV irradiation for 28 days. This approach highlights a functional design of liquid-repellent surfaces for numerous real-world applications.

Abstract:Facile fabrication of smooth highly repellent coatings from perfluorinated homopolymers in a simple one‐step procedure is demonstrated. The coatings show remarkable repellence towards various liquids with different surface tensions, self‐cleaning, and anti‐graffiti ability. The coatings can be directly applied to various substrates such as glass, metals, and microfiber cloths without any prior pre‐treatment. Liquid repellent surfaces are of high interest in various fields like protective coatings and droplet manipulation due to their outstanding properties from self‐cleaning to anti‐fouling. Most reported surfaces rely on the fabrication of micro/‐nanostructured surfaces, the infusion of porous surfaces with immiscible lubricants, or the grafting of monolayers with low surface energy to achieve repellence of various liquids. However, these methods are limited in terms of their durability and long‐term stability. Here, the fabrication of smooth, transparent fluorinated poly (perfluoroalkyl methacrylate) coatings via UV‐initiated radical polymerization in a simple one‐step procedure is reported. The resulting surfaces show very low surface energies of down to 7 mN m−1, low contact angle hysteresis below 5°, very good repellence towards various liquids with different polarities as well as self‐cleaning and anti‐graffiti ability. The fabricated coatings can be applied to various substrates from glass slides to microfiber cloths. This demonstrates that they outperform common commercially available fluorinated coatings, such as, for example, Hyflon AD 40L S, in terms of liquid repellence and their performance in real‐world applications.

Abstract:Surfaces repellent towards oils and other low surface tension fluids have a wide range of applications, particularly in the textile space, for example in outdoor apparel, protective clothing, and home furnishings. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are commonly used to provide low surface energy chemistry to textile finishes, however this class of chemicals are either banned or being phased-out worldwide, due to environmental and health concerns. Here, we develop a liquidlike polymer-brush based polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) finish that is simple to apply to fibrous surfaces like fabrics, enabling them to repel ultra-low surface tension liquids such as ethanol (γ LV = 22.3 mN.m -1 ). In addition, we determine the accuracy of current wettability theory in predicting the resultant wettability of such PFAS-free oleophobic surfaces, to understand which design parameters remain applicable to textured surfaces treated with these sustainable low surface energy chemistries. Our findings reveal that one-dimensional wettability theory offers a more accurate prediction of the wetting properties for balanced twill weave monofilament metal meshes and plain weave multifilament fabrics but lacks predictive power for more complex geometries, such as warp faced twill weave meshes and knit fabrics. Furthermore, we find that yarn spacing plays a more dominant role than yarn radius in achieving a robust non-wetted interface. Overall, the finish developed here represents a potential alternate surface chemistry for achieving low surface tension fluid repellency, and the design principles of such a finish enable the design of sustainable oleophobic and even superoleophobic surfaces.

Abstract:Superamphiphobic surfaces, capable of repelling both water and low-surface-tension liquids, are important for many applications. Simple and efficient way to fabricate superamphiphobic surfaces and their robust self-cleaning and abrasion resistance are key requirements for superamphiphobic surfaces to realize their applications. Here, superamphiphobic surfaces with extremely high contact angles (CAs) and low contact angle hysteresis for both water and low-surface-tension liquids are fabricated by a facile spray method of fluorinated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (F-MWCNTs). The fluorine content of F-MWCNTs is as high as 47.4%. The random accumulation of F-MWCNTs and the evaporation of solvent during spraying process creates appropriate surface roughness and micro-hills-like re-entrant microstructures. So, the CA for water and hexadecane on the surface reach 172.4 degrees and 163.0 degrees, and sliding angles (SAs) are 1.2 degrees and 4.3 degrees respectively. Meanwhile, water and hexadecane are bouncing on this surface. Whether immersed in oil or exposed to air, the surface still possesses robust self-cleaning property. In addition, the introduction of spray adhesive greatly promotes the robustness of the coating, and the whole surface region maintains great superamphiphobic property after 40 abrasion cycle. Moreover, after soaking in acid solution with pH of 2 or alkaline solution with pH of 12 for 48 h, the CA and SA of water and hexadecane on this surface changes slightly, and this surface still holds outstanding superamphiphobicity. Furthermore, the reagents and devices required for the entire method are readily available, so it will be a potential candidate for the industrial production.

Abstract:Despite immense potential applications envisioned for self-cleaning surfaces, the existing approaches used for fabricating these surfaces suffer limitations arising from their high cost and complicated fabrication procedures, as well as the lack of mechanical durability and poor optical clarity. Herein we report a simple fabrication design toward omniphobic surfaces involving the application of an epoxy thermoset onto a substrate and the subsequent addition of a self-cleaning component. This approach is environmentally benign, as it utilizes a nonfluorinated self-cleaning component, namely polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This method is highly versatile, as was demonstrated by its successful use in an epoxy and its composites with a nanoclay, cellulose nanocrystal, and graphene oxide. The self-cleaning-, optical-, and mechanical properties of these coatings are systematically evaluated herein. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization is performed to gain valuable insight regarding the morphology of PDMS in these epoxy coatings.

Abstract:Herein, we report the fabrication of a superhydrophobic surface with a new and effective silica nanocomposite. A facile synthesis was developed by spraying the as-prepared silica suspension on a glass substrate, where the SiO2 nanoparticles were composed of methylated aerogel particles wrapped by hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Three types of methylated silica aerogel nanoparticles with different surface roughness and porosities were prepared using specific precursors and methylation agents. The coating of the silica aerogels (sodium silicate and trimethylchlorosilane) wrapped in PDMS was exceptionally superhydrophobic with a superior water contact angle of 169.80 ± 3° and a sliding angle of less than 4°. The semi-transparent coating maintained its excellent water repellency at 350 °C for least 4 h and exhibited durable superhydrophobic properties for 6 months at ambient conditions. Additionally, the coating also showed good mechanical stability and remarkable self-cleaning behaviour.

Abstract:We have fabricated a multifunctional coating with properties of superhydrophilicity, high transparency, antireflection and self-clean via a low-cost one-step chemical vapor deposition method without any further chemical modification. We have investigated influence of the surface topography of the silica nanoparticles to the antifogging and antireflection. The results have indicated that the excellent antifogging and transparency properties are due to the amplification of the well-ordered nipple silica nanoparticles to the hydrophilicity and suppression of the reflection, respectively. Abstract:A highly transparent self-cleaning superhydrophobic surface was constructed via a facile and environmentally friendly strategy by using biomass-based polyurethane and fused SiO2 nanoparticles. By simply controlling the amounts of castor oil (CO) and SiO2, the coating presented excellent superhydrophobic with high water contact angle (158.5 degrees) and low sliding angle (3.9 degrees), as well as the transmittance of the coating was above 80% in visible-light region. Moreover, the coatings showed remarkable robustness against abrasion of 5 cycles without an apparent decrease of superhydrophobicity and possessed excellent self-cleaning properties against dirty contaminant. Therefore, such transparent and self-cleaning superhydrophobic coating could make it an ideal material for application in optoelectronics, liquid-repellent coatings, and oil-water separation. Abstract:The practical implementation of superhydrophobic surfaces in oil–water separation, antifouling, and self-cleaning has been severely hampered by the incorporation of hazardous components and their limited durability. In this study, a straightforward immersion process was employed to incorporate different-sized ZnO particles onto a nonwoven substrate, resulting in the creation of a multi-layered nano-rough structure. Subsequently, polydimethylsiloxane was utilized for hydrophobic modification, aiming to decrease the free energy of the fabric surface and establish a durable covalent bond between the coating and the fabric through a cross-linking reaction during the curing process. Ultimately, the successful fabrication of superhydrophobic textiles with exceptional robustness was achieved. The prepared fabrics exhibited a static water contact angle of 163.9°. Besides, a considerable mechanical stability to withstand 80 sandpaper abrasion cycles, and chemical resistance with sustained superhydrophobic property in various harsh environments (e.g., strong acid/base solutions, and various organic solvents), were presented. Furthermore, the fabricated fabric demonstrated a separation efficiency exceeding 90% and a contact angle greater than 150° even after 50 cycles when utilized as a filter for oil–water separation. This remarkable performance can be attributed to its exceptional stain resistance and self-cleaning property.

Abstract:The creation of surfaces with various super nonwetting properties is an ongoing challenge. We report diverse modifications of novel synthesized zirconia-ceria nanocomposites by different low surface energy agents to fabricate nanofluids capable of regulating surface wettability of mineral substrates to achieve selective superhydrophobic, superoleophobic-superhydrophilic, and superamphiphobic conditions. Surfaces treated with these nanofluids offer self-cleaning properties and effortless rolling-off behavior with sliding angles ≤7° for several liquids with surface tensions between 26 and 72.1 mN/m. The superamphiphobic nanofluid coating imparts nonstick properties to a solid surface whereby liquid drops can be effortlessly displaced on the coating with a near-zero tilt and conveniently lifted off using a needle tip, leaving no trace. Further, the superamphiphobic surface demonstrates good oil repellency toward ultralow surface tension liquids such as n-hexane and n-heptane. The superoleophobic-superhydrophilic surface repels oil droplets well regardless of whether it is in the air or underwater conditions. In addition, reaping the benefits of the ZrO2-CeO2 nanocomposites' photocatalysis feature, the superoleophobic-superhydrophilic coating exhibits self-cleaning ability by the degradation of color dyes. Modification of the wettability of substrates is carried out by a cost-effective and facile solution-immersion approach, which creates surfaces with hierarchical nano-submicron-scaled structures. The multipurpose coated surfaces have outstanding durability and mechanical stability. They also resist well high-temperature-high-pressure conditions, which will provide various practical applications in different fields, including the condensate banking removal in gas reservoirs or the separation of oil/water mixtures.
Facile approach to design a stable, damage resistant, slippery, and omniphobic surface

Abstract:Creating a robust omniphobic surface that repels various liquids would have broad technological implications for areas ranging from biomedical devices and fuel transport to architecture. The present omniphobic surfaces still have the problems of complex fabrication methods, high cost, and being environmentally harmful. To address these challenges, here we report a novel process to design a non-fluorinated, long-term slippery omniphobic surface of candle soot nanoparticles with a silicone binder that cures at room temperature. The porosity, nanoscale roughness, strong affinity of the substrate with the silicone lubricant, and retention of lubricant after curing of the binder play an important role in its stability and low ice adhesion strength at sub-zero temperature. The developed surface exhibits damage resistant slippery properties, repellency to several liquids with different surface tensions including blood, delay in freezing point along with ultra-low ice adhesion strength (2 kPa) and maintains it even below 7 kPa under harsh environmental conditions; 90 frosting/defrosting cycles at -90 °C; 2 months under an ice layer; 2 months at 60 °C; 9 days flow in acidic/basic water and exposure to super-cold water. In addition, this novel technique is cheap, easy to fabricate, environmentally benign and suitable for large-scale applications.

Abstract:Most of the artificial superhydrophobic surfaces easily lose their good water repellency once they are chemically or mechanically damaged, which seriously hinders their practical application. Durable superhydrophobic materials with recyclability, low-temperature resistance, and self-cleaning properties were successfully prepared by employing silica particles and polytetrafluoroethylene via a simple drop-coating method. The as-prepared superhydrophobic materials not only show excellent superhydrophobicity but also display fascinating durability and chemical stability after a series of rigorous tests. Importantly, the debris scraped from the superhydrophobic materials can be recycled and easily reused to prepare new superhydrophobic materials. This facile strategy may pave the way for the scalable and recyclable robust superhydrophobic materials in practical applications.

Abstract:Bioinspired superhydrophilic/phobic self-cleaning surfaces have recently drawn a lot of interest in both fundamental and applied research. A hybrid method to produce the self-cleaning property of micro/nanostructured surface using ultra-fast laser pulses followed by chemical fluorination is proposed. The typical micro/nanocomposite structures that form from microporous arrays and microgroove groups have been processed by picosecond laser on titanium alloy surface. The surface hydrophilic/phobic and self-cleaning properties of micro/nanostructures before and after fluorination with fluoroalkyl-silane were investigated using surface contact angle measurements. The results indicate that surface properties change from hydrophilic to hydrophobic after fluorination, and the micro/nanostructured surface with increased roughness contributes to the improvement of surface hydrophobicity. The micro/nanomodification can make the original hydrophilic titanium alloy surface more hydrophilic or superhydrophilic. It also can make an originally hydrophobic fluorinated titanium alloy surface more hydrophobic or superhydrophobic. The produced micro/nanostructured titanium alloy surfaces show excellent self-cleaning properties regardless of the fluorination treatment, although the fluorinated surfaces have slightly better self-cleaning properties. It is found that surface treatment using ultra-fast laser pulses and subsequent chemical fluorination is an effective way to manipulate surface wettability and obtain self-cleaning properties.

A Facile and Large-Area Fabrication Method of Superhydrophobic Self-Cleaning Fluorinated Polysiloxane/Tio2 Nanocomposite Coatings with Long-Term Durability

Abstract:A long-term superhydrophobic self-cleaning coating was first fabricated by simply blending ambient-cured fluorinated polysiloxane binder with TiO2 nanoparticles. The obtained coating has excellent durability in various environments, and this method can be used for large-scale fabrication of self-cleaning coatings for practical applications.

Abstract:A novel hybrid material synthesized by grafting fluorinated block polymer chains to silica nanoparticles via surface. initiated activators generated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP) was proposed. The components of the block copolymer 2-[ [ [ [ 2-(perfluorohexyl)]- sulfonyl] methyl]. amino] ethyl. acrylate (C(6)SA) and methyl methacrylate were well designed, and verified by gel permeation chromatography measurements. Monodispersed silica nanoparticles prepared by Stober method and grafted by the fluorinated block copolymer could disperse well in the organic solvent. The form of fluorinated block copolymer grafted silica nanoparticles was confirmed by TEM. The composition and chemical structure were studied by FTIR and H-1-NMR. The presence of hierarchical multi. scale surface roughness in the samples was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Furthermore, this inorganic/organic hybrid material, SiO2-P(MMA-b-C(6)SA), showed excellent thermal stability, tested by TGA measurements. Water and n-hexadecane contact angles on the hybrid surface were both larger than that of the pure fluorinated polymer P(MMA-b-C(6)SA) surface, which can impart the surface with olephobiity and water. repellence properties. More importantly, this inorganic/organic hybrid surface showed excellent self. cleaning properties, dust can be easily washed away by water or swept away by wind. According to the present study, it is reasonable to predict that the organic. inorganic hybrid coating will be a prospective anti. icing and self. cleaning candidate.

Progress in Organic Coatings

Abstract:Omniphobic coatings designed to repel liquid contamination off the surface can be used in various industries such as automotive, constructions, oil-water separation, anti-fouling marine devices, etc. Various methods have been investigated in the past decade to achieve omniphobicity in which majority of them have proven to be either complex, expensive, or impractical for large scale production. This study has employed a simple three-step, micro-nano-structuring fabrication technique to create physico-chemically and thermo-mechanically robust slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS). Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used as a base resin engineered with chemical bonding to ZnO micro particles and further physical trapping to hydrophobized TiO 2 nano particles to create a hierarchy structure able to repel water and create omniphobicity. With very low contact angle hysteresis (CAH) of <1° and a low tilting angle of <5° for various liquid test subjects, the final coating displays excellent hydrophobicity and omniphobicity in spite of going through harsh mechanical tests such as the cross-hatch and scotch tape tests, pressure tests up to 100 N (500 kPa), thermal stability tests by exposure to low and high temperatures (−18 °C to 120 °C), and chemical pH tests from 1 to 13. We believe that the simple and low-cost micro-nano-engineering approach can be easily scaled up and is suitable for a variety of applications for self-cleaning and hydrophobic purposes.
