Abstract:Developing a slippery lubricant-infused porous surface (SLIPS) is an important strategy for fabricating dynamically omniphobic surfaces. In this study, biocompatible and non-toxic liquid silicone rubber, TiO2 nanoparticles, and dimethyl silicone oil were used to fabricate a SLIPS. Subsequently, systematic investigation was conducted to explore its associated properties and address existing challenges in this field. The chosen lubricant exhibited a strong chemical affinity towards the substrate, eliminating the need for any functionalization treatment prior to infusion. In addition, the fabricated SLIPS exhibited excellent dynamic omniphobicity as well as shear stability, thermal stability, chemical stability, and mechanical stability. Moreover, it demonstrated good self-cleaning performance for droplets, with varying surface energies, temperatures, and pH values, as well as for common dyes and contaminants. In addition, damage from external forces could self-repair on the SLIPS, which is beneficial for extending the service life and application range.

Abstract:Omniphobic surfaces have a very wide range of applications. However, limited by substrate material and/or fabrication processes, scalable synthesis of robust omniphobic surfaces with universality and versatility remains challenging for both academia and industry. Here, we present a facile and scalable slippery omniphobic surface (FSSOS) based on the straightforward blending and dip/spray-coating of polysilazane (PSZ) and minute low surface energy silane under room temperature. Water shows a contact angle hysteresis (CAH) of 18°, and the overall trend across all tested solvents suggests a relatively low CAH (<10°), further enhancing its surface omniphobicity. The one-step synthesis protocol is cost-effective, substrate-independent, and does not require curing aids such as UV irradiation or heat. The FSSOS achieves multi-liquid omni-repellency with chemical and mechanical durability under various harsh exposure conditions. The CAH remains stable even after exposure to 4 m/s water jet impact for 8 h, 130 W ultrasonic vibration for 250 min, 10 kPa pressure tape-peel test for 250 cycles, heating at 250 °C for 10 min, and 205 mW/cm 2 UV irradiation for 28 days. This approach highlights a functional design of liquid-repellent surfaces for numerous real-world applications.

Abstract:Omniphobic coatings designed to repel liquid contamination off the surface can be used in various industries such as automotive, constructions, oil-water separation, anti-fouling marine devices, etc. Various methods have been investigated in the past decade to achieve omniphobicity in which majority of them have proven to be either complex, expensive, or impractical for large scale production. This study has employed a simple three-step, micro-nano-structuring fabrication technique to create physico-chemically and thermo-mechanically robust slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS). Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used as a base resin engineered with chemical bonding to ZnO micro particles and further physical trapping to hydrophobized TiO 2 nano particles to create a hierarchy structure able to repel water and create omniphobicity. With very low contact angle hysteresis (CAH) of <1° and a low tilting angle of <5° for various liquid test subjects, the final coating displays excellent hydrophobicity and omniphobicity in spite of going through harsh mechanical tests such as the cross-hatch and scotch tape tests, pressure tests up to 100 N (500 kPa), thermal stability tests by exposure to low and high temperatures (−18 °C to 120 °C), and chemical pH tests from 1 to 13. We believe that the simple and low-cost micro-nano-engineering approach can be easily scaled up and is suitable for a variety of applications for self-cleaning and hydrophobic purposes.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Hypothesis</h3><p>State-of-the-art superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) usually do not function in high humidity and frosty climate conditions. Lubricant-infused slippery surfaces (LISSs) with a homogeneous and ultraslippery surface are expected to be a reliable icephobic technique. Hence, the fabrication of simple and scalable bioinspired LISSs is important for practical applications.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Experiments</h3><p>Durable one-step LISSs consisting of silicone oil and polymer mixtures were fabricated. A grid map based on added oil and silica nanoparticles was developed to tune wettability, morphology, and slippery behavior of surfaces. A similar framework for ice adhesion of lubricant-infused coatings was also presented for the design of optimal icephobic materials.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Findings</h3><p>LISSs with slight hydrophobicity yield slippery properties, resulting in an order of magnitude lower ice adhesion compared to SHSs. The stable 20-w% silicone-oil-infused slippery coating with slight hydrophobicity and silica nanoparticles was found to be effective in anti-icing. The nanoparticles firmly anchor the oil overlayer and eliminate contamination by drying the surface. The LISSs made of polymers with surface energy ranging from 29 to 31 mJ/m<sup>2</sup> show the potential to achieve low ice adhesion. As a result, the use of systematic frameworks highlights the role of material parameters. One-production strategy can be broadly used to design icephobic materials.</p>

Abstract:Creating a robust synthetic surface that repels various liquids would have broad technological implications for areas ranging from biomedical devices and fuel transport to architecture but has proved extremely challenging. Inspirations from natural nonwetting structures, particularly the leaves of the lotus, have led to the development of liquid-repellent microtextured surfaces that rely on the formation of a stable air-liquid interface. Despite over a decade of intense research, these surfaces are, however, still plagued with problems that restrict their practical applications: limited oleophobicity with high contact angle hysteresis, failure under pressure and upon physical damage, inability to self-heal and high production cost. To address these challenges, here we report a strategy to create self-healing, slippery liquid-infused porous surface(s) (SLIPS) with exceptional liquid- and ice-repellency, pressure stability and enhanced optical transparency. Our approach-inspired by Nepenthes pitcher plants-is conceptually different from the lotus effect, because we use nano/microstructured substrates to lock in place the infused lubricating fluid. We define the requirements for which the lubricant forms a stable, defect-free and inert 'slippery' interface. This surface outperforms its natural counterparts and state-of-the-art synthetic liquid-repellent surfaces in its capability to repel various simple and complex liquids (water, hydrocarbons, crude oil and blood), maintain low contact angle hysteresis (<2.5°), quickly restore liquid-repellency after physical damage (within 0.1-1 s), resist ice adhesion, and function at high pressures (up to about 680 atm). We show that these properties are insensitive to the precise geometry of the underlying substrate, making our approach applicable to various inexpensive, low-surface-energy structured materials (such as porous Teflon membrane). We envision that these slippery surfaces will be useful in fluid handling and transportation, optical sensing, medicine, and as self-cleaning and anti-fouling materials operating in extreme environments.
Chemically robust superhydrophobic surfaces with a self‐replenishing nanoscale liquid coating

Abstract:In this study, a more stable and environmentally friendly nano‐scale liquid coating is reported to replace the conventional aging‐prone and unsustainable salinization layers of superhydrophobic surfaces. The surface illustrates a fast drop shedding process and reduced oil depletion. By introducing a bottom "reservoir" of free liquid for self‐replenishing to the upper layer, the superhydrophobic surface heals spontaneously in response to oxidation. This liquid layer also reduced the crystal sites for icing, so that it has an improving anti‐icing property. Due to poor chemical robustness, superhydrophobic surfaces become susceptible to failure, especially in a highly oxidative environment. To ensure the long‐term efficacy of these surfaces, a more stable and environmentally friendly coating is required to replace the conventional salinization layers. Here, soot‐templated surfaces with re‐entrant nanostructures are precoated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) brushes. An additional nanometer‐thick lubricant layer of PDMS was then applied to increase chemical stability. The surface is superhydrophobic with a nanoscale liquid coating. Since the lubricant layer is thin, ridge formation is suppressed, which leads to low drop sliding friction and fast drop shedding. By introducing a bottom "reservoir" of a free lubricant as an oil source for self‐replenishing to the upper layer, the superhydrophobic surface becomes more stable and heals spontaneously in response to alkali erosion and O2 plasma exposure. This design also leads to a higher icing delay time and faster removal of impacting cooled water drops than for uncoated surfaces, preventing icing at low temperatures.

Sustainable Manufacturing of Multifunctional Fluorine-Free Superslippery Flexible Surfaces

Abstract:Surface contamination and friction result in significant energy losses with widespread environmental impact. In the present work, we developed fluorine-free super-slippery surfaces employing environmentally friendly and simple biofuel-based flame treatment of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Through a unique combination of processing parameters, highly transparent (>90%) and flexible films were engineered with omniphobic, anti-icing, and ultra-low friction properties. The processed films showed an extremely low tilting angle (<5°) and contact angle hysteresis (<4°) against different liquids, even under subzero temperatures. The coefficient of friction (COF) reduced to 0.01 after processing compared to ∼1 for PDMS. Extremely low ice adhesion of <20 kPa and enhanced freezing time ensured anti-icing behavior. The exceptional multidimensional traits were derived from the extremely stable silicone lubricant layer ensured by the hierarchically structured wrinkles. Wind tunnel tests showed that an air drag velocity of less than 0.5 m/s was sufficient to initiate droplet motion, highlighting low interfacial friction that leads to an anti-staining nature. Sustaining the self-cleaning and anti-staining characteristics, the processed surface showed utmost durability under different harsh conditions. The super-slippery surfaces with multifunctional characteristics fabricated through a sustainable route can be effectively used for various engineering and industrial applications.
Fabrication of robust and durable slippery anti-icing coating on textured superhydrophobic aluminum surfaces with infused silicone oil

Abstract:<p>A facile and durable biomimetic slippery anti-icing coating was prepared by infusing nontoxic and inexpensive lubricating silicone oil into superhydrophobic dual-scale micro/nano-structured (MNS) aluminum surfaces. Superhydrophobic surfaces were fabricated via the combination of simple chemical etching and anodization, followed by surface modification with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Compared to superhydrophobic coatings, silicone oil-infused polydimethylsiloxane (SOIP) coating displays a low ice-adhesion strength of 22 ± 5 kPa on the structured surface. Moreover, the SOIP coating sustained low ice-adhesion strength (35 ± 15 kPa) even when the temperature was lowered to −25 °C. The MNS-surface exhibits excellent durability, showing a low ice-adhesion (108 kPa) after 20 icing/de-icing cycles and long-term icephobicity (55 ± 13 kPa) after four months' exposure in ambient environment. We also examined the influence of surface morphology on ice-adhesion strength, the SOIP modified MNS-surface displays better anti-icing properties compared to a nano-structured (NS) surface under harsh conditions; icing/deicing and abrasion cycles. The MNS-surface act as reservoir to hold the excess amount of oil, thus reducing the loss of lubricant during icing/deicing cycles. The proposed technique is very simple and cost-effective, and most importantly it can be applied for production of durable and scalable anti-icing coatings for various practical applications.</p>

Abstract:Ranging from industrial facilities to residential infrastructure, functional surfaces encompassing functionalities such as anti-fouling, fog collection, anti-corrosion, and anti-icing play a critical role in the daily lives of humans, but creating these surfaces is elusive. Bionic dewetting and liquid-infused surfaces have inspired the exploitation of functional surfaces. However, practical applications of these existing surfaces remain challenging because of their inherent shortcomings. In this study, we propose a novel functional slippery lubricated coating (FSLC) based on a simple blend of polysilazane (PSZ), silicone oil, and nano silica. This simple, nonfluorine based, and low-cost protocol promotes not only hierarchical micro-nano structure but also favorable surface chemistry, which facilitates robust silicone oil adhesion and excellent slippery properties (sliding angle: ∼1.6°) on various solid materials without extra processing or redundant treatments. The highly integrated competence of FSLC, characterized by robustness, durability, strong adhesion to substrates, and the ability for large-area preparation, render them ideal for practical production and application. The proposed FSLC holds outstanding application potentials for anti-fouling, self-cleaning, fog collection, anti-corrosion, and anti-icing functionalities.

Superomniphobic Surfaces for Easy-Removals of Environmental-Related Liquids after Icing and Melting

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces often lose the easy-removal ability of liquids during icing melting cycles due to the impalement phenomena of air pockets. Especially for the most common mixed liquids in normal life, their difficult-removals after icing and melting have brought colossal troubles in the fields of aviation, energy, biomedicine, etc. Here we adopt the ultrafast laser to fabricate the optimal micro-nanostructured surfaces, realizing excellent superomniphobicity for seven environmental-related liquids. It is demonstrated that different droplets on the surfaces recover well to the original Cassie-Baxter state after melting, and can be removed easily at low tilted angles. The ice adhesion strengths of the seven liquids as low as 5 kPa and the micro-nanostructure durability ensure the long-term easy-removal after icing. Compared with the ice adhesion strength of untreated surfaces (264.4 ± 17.6 kPa), those of our designed surfaces have decreased by over 50 times. Icing and melting processes are investigated to reveal the easy-removal mechanisms that specifically distributed solutes and bubbles after icing impact downwards significantly to accelerate the recovery of the Cassie—Baxter state during melting. A series of environmental-related durability experiments including continuous icing melting cycles, long-term salt spray, and high-pressure water jet impact further demonstrate the surfaces promising for real applications.
Oil-Infused Superhydrophobic Silicone Material for Low Ice Adhesion with Long-Term Infusion Stability

Abstract:A new approach for anti-icing materials was created to combat the effects of ice accretion and adhesion. The concept combines the strengths of individual characteristics for low ice adhesion based on elasticity, superhydrophobicity, and slippery liquid infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) for an optimal combination of high water repellency and ice-phobicity. This was achieved by replicating microtextures from a laser-irradiated aluminum substrate to an oil-infused polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer, the result of which is a flexible, superhydrophobic, and lubricated material. This design provides multiple strategies of icing protection through high water repellency to retard ice accretion and with elasticity and oil infusion for low ice adhesion in a single material. Studies showed that an infusion of silicone oils with viscosity at 100 cSt and below 8 wt % in PDMS solution is sufficient to reduce the ice shear strength to an average of 38 kPa while maintaining contact angles and roll-off angles of above 150° and below 10°, respectively. This ice-adhesion value is a ∼95% reduction from a bare aluminum surface and ∼30% reduction from a microtextured, superhydrophobic PDMS material without oil infusion. In addition, three-month aging studies showed that the wetting and ice-adhesion performance of this material did not significantly degrade.

Abstract:The slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces with nanostructures have emerged as a high-performance multifunctional surface with super-liquid repellency, low contact angle hysteresis and self-healing. However, the amount of lubricant captured by the nanostructures is extremely low, and such oil-filled functional surfaces are susceptible to lubricant loss depletion. In this research, we developed a honeycomb-inspired multidimensional lubricant-infused surface that has a good ability to lock in lubricant while providing excellent mechanical durability. The honeycomb-shaped hexagonal micropores store lubricant to stabilize the smooth oil layer, while the pine-needle shaped nano-needles in the pores retain the lubricant in the pores, making it more difficult to lose the lubricant and increasing durability. Compared to conventional nanostructured slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces, this surface ensures excellent long-term lubrication performance under extreme conditions such as cooling, high shear and water spray impact. Meanwhile the honeycomb mesh lubricant injected into the surface is able to rapidly coalesce and remove water droplets during condensation due to the presence of coarsening effect, and it also retards the formation of ice. Abstract:Omniphobic liquid-like surface (LLS) offers excellent dynamic liquid repellency owing to the highly mobile polymer chains mediating at the solid–liquid interface. These polymer chains, often achieved by surface grafting, are not durable against abrasion or oxidation, which seriously hinders their practical application. Here we report a new vapor-based approach to create transparent nanogradient coating for LLSs with unprecedented mechanical strength and durability. The nanogradient coating is composed of a sandwich structure with an ultrathin primer, a rigid bulk, and a nanocomposite surface with abundant polydimethylsiloxane-like chains, all of which achieved via sequential plasma polymerization of a linear and a cyclic siloxane. The plasma-polymerized cyclic siloxane enables coating good mechanical strength while the plasma-polymerized linear siloxane confers coating sub-nanometer roughness and excellent dynamic liquid repellency. The resultant coating exhibits contact angle hysteresis < 5° towards many low-surface-energy liquids, as well as good mechanical strength with the hardness exceeding 1 GPa and superior durability enduring 100,000 cycles of abrasion. The coating also survived industrial standard thermal and accelerated UV-aging tests without losing its liquid repellency and transparency. The reported method is facile, scalable, and substrate-independent, offering exciting new opportunities towards industrial fabrication and real-world application of LLS.

Abstract:Liquid fouling can reduce the functionality of critical engineering surfaces. Recent studies have shown that minimizing contact angle hysteresis is a promising strategy for achieving omniphobic (all-liquid repellent) properties, thereby inhibiting fouling. Prior omniphobic films can repel a broad range of liquids, but the applicability of these coatings has always been limited to silicon wafers or smooth glass. Here we develop a facile procedure to generate an omniphobic coating on any surface, including metals, paper, ceramics, etc. The coating involves depositing an ultra-smooth, silicon wafer-like silica layer and then treating this layer with a highly reactive chlorosilane, which grafts polydimethylsiloxane chains onto the surface. Negligible contact angle hysteresis (≤ 1°) for various liquids, including ultra-low surface tension oils, alcohols, and fluoro-solvents, was achieved on many different substrates regardless of their initial roughness or chemistry. In fact, the contact angle hysteresis was so low we were forced to propose an alternate measurement technique, using tilt angles, that reduced the inherent errors associated with traditional contact angle goniometry. The coating's durability was characterized and, when it was damaged, could be repeatedly repaired, fully restoring the omniphobic properties to their initial state.

Transparency and damage tolerance of patternable omniphobic lubricated surfaces based on inverse colloidal monolayers

Abstract:A transparent coating that repels a wide variety of liquids, prevents staining, is capable of self-repair and is robust towards mechanical damage can have a broad technological impact, from solar cell coatings to self-cleaning optical devices. Here we employ colloidal templating to design transparent, nanoporous surface structures. A lubricant can be firmly locked into the structures and, owing to its fluidic nature, forms a defect-free, self-healing interface that eliminates the pinning of a second liquid applied to its surface, leading to efficient liquid repellency, prevention of adsorption of liquid-borne contaminants, and reduction of ice adhesion strength. We further show how this method can be applied to locally pattern the repellent character of the substrate, thus opening opportunities to spatially confine any simple or complex fluids. The coating is highly defect-tolerant due to its interconnected, honeycomb wall structure, and repellency prevails after the application of strong shear forces and mechanical damage. The regularity of the coating allows us to understand and predict the stability or failure of repellency as a function of lubricant layer thickness and defect distribution based on a simple geometric model.

After thermal treatment, the surface shows omniphobic characteristic, and most liquid droplets except silicone oil, can freely slide with little sliding angle. More that, the omniphobic coating has extreme stability and its wettability hardly changed under various harsh conditions including ultraviolet radiation, hot solvent soaking, ultrasonic treatment, and even 30,000 friction cycles under 100 K Pa pressure against textiles. Furthermore, the coating has extensive applications and free from limitation of various materials, volume, size and shape. The inner wall of container, fabric, paper, wood, sands and polymer films can be covered with the omniphobic coating to demonstrate non-wetted property. Therefore, the robust omniphobic coatings have tremendous potential for widespread applications for example self-cleaning window glass.</p>

Abstract:This work depicts a substrate independent, "reactive" slippery formulation that can robustly anchor onto a chemically functionalized surface following the epoxy‐amine ring opening reaction to result in a highly durable "liquid‐like" omniphobic solid, anti‐biofouling coating. Covalent and defect‐free surface‐grafted solid lubricating chains that can impart "liquid‐like" slippery behavior have proven advantageous over lubricant‐infused and textured anti‐wetting surfaces. Herein, the co‐hydrolysis and co‐condensation of a mixture of organosilanes followed by the epoxy‐amine ring opening reaction at the interface results in a highly robust, transparent, and "liquid‐like" solid slippery omniphobic coating (LL‐OSC). The presence of the epoxy‐terminated organosilane a) acts as a molecular spacer in between the low‐surface energy, rigid fluorine terminated silane and b) provides "reactive" epoxy groups for covalent binding to a pre‐functionalized amine surface for potential applicability in droplet transport and manipulation, diagnostics, etc. LL‐OSC exhibits resistance to both solid and liquid abrasions such as sandpaper abrasions, prolonged UV irradiation, DI water and high temperature (30 days), and submersion in chemically contaminated aqueous solutions. This is the first report of a hemocompatible solid slippery coating for inhibiting platelet adhesion, thus, paving way for blood‐contacting medical device applications. The LL‐OSC exhibits remarkable cytocompatibility, repellence to plasma protein, and cells and prevents biofilm formation. Additionally, the substrate‐independent LL‐OSC can be applied onto metals and polymers. This study envisions that the reported durable, solid slippery coating will find widespread applicability in hospital settings, electronic devices, etc.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have significant potential for applications in various fields, including self-cleaning, anti-icing, and water/oil separation. However, fabricating a superhydrophobic coating that is simultaneously transparent and durable has remained a challenge due to the inherent trade-off among these three properties. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to creating a superhydrophobic and highly transparent surface with self-generated multi-scale roughness, eliminating the need for employing nanoparticles of varying sizes. Our approach revolves around developing an inorganic resin using SiO2 nanoparticles and small silica oligomers, synthesized through the sol-gel method. Subsequently, this resin is applied to the surface via spin-coating. Under specific conditions, an inorganic polymerization of TCMS occurs on the surface, leading to the formation of nanofibers and larger nanoparticles in conjunction with the initially deposited silica nanoparticles. This process enables the creation of a surface with multi-scale roughness. We investigate the influence of nanoparticle concentration, functionalization duration, and reaction temperature on surface properties. Our findings reveal that a concentration of 7 % SiO2 nanoparticles, combined with a 4-hour TCMS surface functionalization at 3 °C, yields the optimal conditions for fabricating a surface that combines exceptional superhydrophobicity, transparency, and durability. The resulting surface exhibits a remarkable contact angle of 160.8°, a sliding angle of 1°, and an 85 % transmittance rate. Moreover, the coating demonstrates impressive resistance to abrasion for up to 30 cycles and can withstand temperatures as high as 250 °C. Additionally, the coating shows enhanced protection against UV radiation for up to 40 h and improved resistance to sand abrasion for up to 30 s, enduring bombardment pressures of up to 6 bars. We also conduct tests on the coating for self-cleaning and anti-icing properties, demonstrating excellent performance.

Abstract:As an alternative approach to superhydrophobic surfaces, slippery lubricant-infused porous surface (SLIPS) is promising solution to undesirable adhesion. Nonetheless, it is highly expected yet still challenging to exploit method featured substrate-independence, time-saving property and long-term stability. In this study, different from the common preparation process of SLIPS, the di-particles-derived slippery lubricant-infused porous surface (DPD-SLIPS) was successfully fabricated derived from strategically inverted construction of highly stable and superhydrophobic di-particles framework for locking lubricant via successively-two-step spraying polyacrylate adhesive nanoparticles (NPs) and fluorinated SiO2 NPs, followed by perfluoropolyether (PFPE) infiltration. This substrate-independent procedure is time-saving and adaptable for a variety of materials with distinct mor-phologies and dimensions. The resultant surface hierarchy exhibited excellent mechanical robustness and lubricant-locking ability when subjected to adhesive tape peeling, abrasion, and shearing tests. Furthermore, the anti-adhesion performance of the created surface was investigated under diverse conditions, exhibiting remarkable ultra-slipping, drag reduction, anti-biofouling, self-cleaning, and anti-icing properties. In particular, the construction of such low surface energy base with micro/nano hierarchical structure via a facile spraying method is an advanced candidate for real applications in reducing ship drag, marine antifouling, preventing biological invasion, among others.
