Abstract:Integrated circuit (IC) design for a wireless BCI system is put forward in this paper. The system is composed of an electrode, a stimulator, antennas, and an integrated circuit including a preamplifier, an analog to digital converter (ADC), a current mode digital to analog converter (DAC), a transceiver and a micro control unit (MCU). The system is closed loop, which can detect and record electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, send the signals to computer wirelessly, and generate stimulating signals according to analysis results from the computer. A 16-bit ADC is designed and some non-idealities parameters (e.g. kT/C noise, 1/f Noise and so on) are given. Sub-threshold circuit technology is used to realize ultra low-power MCU. Both of the ADC and the MUC are verified by simulation results. Next work will include the design of the preamplifier, IDAC, and a single chip design integrating all the circuits.

Abstract:A digital cochlear implant was designed. The chip can provide stimulus though 17 channels. And the number of stimulating mode is as many as 4. The chip can also provide the ability of measuring the voltage of the power supply it gets, measuring the resistor between any two electrodes and measuring the interference of any two electrodes. So it will be fit for testing different speed encoding algorithm. There is a buffer inside the chip, so the chip can receive next data frame while processing current data frame. This can improve the stimulating rate. The chip is a mixed analog/digital ASIG. The power voltage is 12 v, and the maximum power dissipation is less than 50 mW. The chip can be fabricated using a 2 μm CMOS N-well process technology, and the chip area is 20 mm2.

Abstract:The implantable brain-computer interface (BCI) is a direct connection between the human or animal brain and external equipment. The neural interface device is aim to record or stimulate neural activity, and directly connects the central nerve or peripheral nerve with the outside world, so as to realize the signal analysis and control of specific neurons. The research of BCI devices is of great significance for neuroscience, diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases, etc. This paper briefly summarizes our recent works on the development of implantable flexibility planar BCI devices and probe BCI devices based on MEMS technology. With the emergence of optogenetics, the study of neural circuits has been revolutionized. Therefore, a multifunctional BCI device with photoelectric integration is introduced as well. To further improve the performance of implantable BCI devices, further work will concentrate on the integration of more functionality and the improvement of electrode density in one device.

Low-cost circuit design of EEG signal acquisition for the brain-computer interface system

Abstract:Increasing number of research activities and different types of studies in brain-computer interface systems (BCIs) show potential in this young research area. However, BCIs have not become widely applied, most of them are still limited in the laboratory and off-line. One of the important reasons is that: EEG signal acquisition is completed by the professional medical equipments. They are expensive and the parameters of them cannot be flexiblely changed with the specific BCI experiment paradigm. In the paper, a single-channel low-cost circuit of EEG signal acquisition for the BCI system is designed. The circuit is composed of protection circuit, instrumentation amplifier, common mode rejection (CMR) circuit, gain adjustable amplifiers and filters. In order to test this circuit, the circuit simulation and the real-time EEG measurements are implemented. The experimental results show that the circuit is effective with good performance, it is very suitable for the online BCI system.
Real-time Decoding Algorithm in Brain Machine Interfaces

Abstract:The technology of invasive Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) has been developed in last decades, for its possibility to restore motor function of the disabilities. The main task of BCI system is to translate the cortical neural activities into commands of direct brain-controlled prosthetic devices. To study how cortical signals simultaneously recorded from primary motor cortex (M1) neurons were used for external devices control, invasive brain-machine interfaces in rat were investigated. In these experiments, rats were trained to control a relay to obtain water by pressing a lever over a pressure threshold. Microwire array was implanted in rat's motor cortex to record neural activities, and pressure was recorded by a pressure sensor. After spike detecting and sorting, totally 22-58 neurons were found in all 15 channels per rat (except the reference electrode in the array). To compute the firing rate of individual unit, the numbers of spikes in a time bin (Δt =100ms) were counted. Meanwhile, the pressure signal was also computed into bin size (Δt =100ms), by averaging pressure value in the bin period. After that some decoders were designed to make mapping between neural activities and pressure, such as Optimum Linear Estimation(OLE), Kalman filter (KF), and Kernel-Based Membership combined with Curve Fitting algorithm (KMCF). These decoders can be easily learned using a few minutes of training data and provides real-time estimates of hand position every 100ms given the firing rates of neurons in motor cortex. The performances of these decoders were evaluated by Correlation Coefficient (CC) between real and predictive pressure value. The results showed that the KMCF decoder performed best in these experiment, which had higher CC than others (CC=0.94). The higher CC indicated that the activity of motor cortex (M1) neurons can be used for detection of the corresponding movement states and estimation of continuous kinematic parameters. The rats could use - - their neural activities to directly control the relay and successfully get rewards after about one week of training. In further, with the development of the motor-related BCIs technology, BCIs will be possibly used to motor function restoration of paralytics and greatly rehabilitate their capacity of life. Furthermore, the experiment results provide insights into the nature of the neural coding of movement.

Abstract:A cochlear implant stimulating circuit was designed.The chip can provide precise stimulus current to the 17 electrodes.The chip also has error detected ability,it can be used for different speech encoding algorithm.The chip is a mixed signal circuit.It was designed and fabricated with 0.35 μm Embedded EEPROM technology.Dual power supplies are used for the chip,one is 12 V,and the other is 3.3 V.The total area is 9 mm2,and the power consumption is less then 10 mW.The structure of the whole chip and key modules such as reference source,DCM(digital control module) and voltage-controlled current source were introduced.The results of the chip were also described.

Abstract:The efficacy of wireless intracortical brain–computer interfaces (iBCIs) is limited in part by the number of recording channels, which is constrained by the power budget of the implantable system. Designing wireless iBCIs that provide the high-quality recordings of today's wired neural interfaces may lead to inadvertent over-design at the expense of power consumption and scalability. Here, we report analyses of neural signals collected from experimental iBCI measurements in rhesus macaques and from a clinical-trial participant with implanted 96-channel Utah multielectrode arrays to understand the trade-offs between signal quality and decoder performance. Moreover, we propose an efficient hardware design for clinically viable iBCIs, and suggest that the circuit design parameters of current recording iBCIs can be relaxed considerably without loss of performance. The proposed design may allow for an order-of-magnitude power savings and lead to clinically viable iBCIs with a higher channel count.

Abstract:Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their potential applications in medical, assistive, and communication technologies. Building on this, noninvasive BCIs stand out as they provide a safe and user-friendly method for interacting with the human brain. In this work, we provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments and advancements in material, design, and application of noninvasive BCIs electrode technology. We also explore the challenges and limitations currently faced by noninvasive BCI electrode technology and sketch out the technological roadmap from three dimensions: Materials and Design; Performances; Mode and Function. We aim to unite research efforts within the field of noninvasive BCI electrode technology, focusing on the consolidation of shared goals and fostering integrated development strategies among a diverse array of multidisciplinary researchers.

Abstract:With the rapid development of science and technology, the demand for human-computer interaction in many fields is increasing, and the requirements are getting higher and higher. As the most important part in human-computer interaction, the demand for Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology in medicine, games, military fields, etc. is increasing. Therefore, more and more scholars and institutions have begun to study BCI technology. In this paper, an experiment is designed to improve the performance of two-stage CMOS amplifiers, an important component of BCI technology. The experiment uses CoolSpice to build a basic model of the two-stage CMOS amplifier for simulation, replacing brain waves with a small signal, and adjusting the performance of the two-stage CMOS amplifier by adding a compensated capacitor and resistor. Through experimentation, it can be concluded that selecting an appropriate compensated capacitor can significantly improve the performance of the amplifier. Improving the performance of amplifiers can help improve the efficiency of BCI technology and help people collected the information emitted by brain waves more accurately in the future.

Abstract:Remarkable progress has been made in the high resolution, biocompatibility, durability and stretchability for the implantable brain-computer interface (BCI) in the last decades. Due to the inevitable damage of brain tissue caused by traditional rigid devices, the thin film devices are developing rapidly and attracting considerable attention, with continuous progress in flexible materials and non-silicon micro/nano fabrication methods. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically summarize the recent development of implantable thin film devices for acquiring brain information. This brief review subdivides the flexible thin film devices into the following four categories: planar, open-mesh, probe, and micro-wire layouts. In addition, an overview of the fabrication approaches is also presented. Traditional lithography and state-of-the-art processing methods are discussed for the key issue of high-resolution. Special substrates and interconnects are also highlighted with varied materials and fabrication routines. In conclusion, a discussion of the remaining obstacles and directions for future research is provided.

Abstract:A brain-computer interface is a direct communication channel between the brain and external devices. Its signals come from the central nervous system, and its transmission is independent of the peripheral nervous and muscular systems. Brain-computer interface commonly used to assist, enhance, and repair human-motor sensations. Through the classification and recognition of Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, the monitoring and rehabilitation of some neurological and psychological diseases can be realized. Brain-computer interfaces are currently in their infancy and are being explored. Non-invasive brain-computer interfaces refer to brain-computer interfaces that are performed in the cerebral cortex. Semi-invasive brain-computer interfaces are what the chip penetrates the cerebral cortex but does not penetrate the gray matter in the brain. An immersive brain-computer interface is when the chip penetrates the gray matter of the brain. At present, Brain-computer interfaces with chips implanted in the head are mainly located in the brain. Brain-computer interfaces located in the cerebellum, brainstem and other parts have not made significant breakthroughs. The brain-computer interface first collects signals transmitted by the brain, then sequences and encodes them . Finally, transfer them to the computer. The computer controls the robotic arm through the acquired signals and finally completes the instructions. This article focuses on invasive and semi-invasive brain-computer interfaces, using case studies, combinatorial studies, and other methods. This research can help patients live better, improve patients' quality of life, and promote future research in bioelectronics and organic electronics.
An Efficient RTL Design for a Wearable Brain–Computer Interface

Abstract:This article proposes an efficient and accurate embedded motor imagery-based brain–computer interface (MI-BCI) that meets the requirements for wearable and real-time applications. To achieve a suitable accuracy considering hardware constraints, we explore BCI transducer algorithms, among which Infinite impulse response (IIR) filter, common spatial pattern, and support vector machine are used to preprocess, extract features, and classify data, respectively. With our hardware implementation of these tasks, we have achieved an accuracy of 77%. Our system is designed at register transfer level (RTL) targeting an ASIC implementation, which significantly decreases power consumption, latency, and area compared to the state-of-the-art (SoA) architectures for embedded BCI systems. To this end, we fold IIR filters using time-shared and RAM-based techniques and use hardware-friendly algorithms for the implementation of other tasks. The RTL design is realized on 45 nm CMOS technology consuming 4 mW power and 0.25 mm2 area, which outperforms the SoA platforms for embedded BCI systems. To further illustrate the outperformance of our design, the proposed architecture is implemented on Virtex-7 field program gate array as a prototyping platform consuming 6 μJ energy with 1.52% area utilization.

Abstract:Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) record neural signals from cortical origin with the objective to control a user interface for communication purposes, a robotic artifact or artificial limb as actuator. One of the key components of such a neuroprosthetic system is the neuro-technical interface itself, the electrode array. In this chapter, different designs and manufacturing techniques will be compared and assessed with respect to scaling and assembling limitations. The overview includes electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes and epicortical brain-machine interfaces to record local field potentials (LFPs) from the surface of the cortex as well as intracortical needle electrodes that are intended to record single-unit activity. Two exemplary complementary technologies for micromachining of polyimide-based arrays and laser manufacturing of silicone rubber are presented and discussed with respect to spatial resolution, scaling limitations, and system properties. Advanced silicon micromachining technologies have led to highly sophisticated intracortical electrode arrays for fundamental neuroscientific applications. In this chapter, major approaches from the USA and Europe will be introduced and compared concerning complexity, modularity, and reliability. An assessment of the different technological solutions comparable to a strength weaknesses opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis might serve as guidance to select the adequate electrode array configuration for each control paradigm and strategy to realize robust, fast, and reliable BCIs.

Abstract:This paper presents a bidirectional brain machine interface (BMI) microsystem designed for closed-loop neuroscience research, especially experiments in freely behaving animals. The system-on-chip (SoC) consists of 16-channel neural recording front-ends, neural feature extraction units, 16-channel programmable neural stimulator back-ends, in-channel programmable closed-loop controllers, global analog-digital converters (ADC), and peripheral circuits. The proposed neural feature extraction units includes 1) an ultra low-power neural energy extraction unit enabling a 64-step natural logarithmic domain frequency tuning, and 2) a current-mode action potential (AP) detection unit with time-amplitude window discriminator. A programmable proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller has been integrated in each channel enabling a various of closed-loop operations. The implemented ADCs include a 10-bit voltage-mode successive approximation register (SAR) ADC for the digitization of the neural feature outputs and/or local field potential (LFP) outputs, and an 8-bit current-mode SAR ADC for the digitization of the action potential outputs. The multi-mode stimulator can be programmed to perform monopolar or bipolar, symmetrical or asymmetrical charge balanced stimulation with a maximum current of 4 mA in an arbitrary channel configuration. The chip has been fabricated in 0.18 μ m CMOS technology, occupying a silicon area of 3.7 mm <sup>2</sup>. The chip dissipates 56 μW/ch on average. General purpose low-power microcontroller with Bluetooth module are integrated in the system to provide wireless link and SoC configuration. Methods, circuit techniques and system topology proposed in this work can be used in a wide range of relevant neurophysiology research, especially closed-loop BMI experiments.

Abstract:The brain–computer interface (BCI) has emerged in recent years and has attracted great attention. As an indispensable part of the BCI signal acquisition system, brain electrodes have a great influence on the quality of the signal, which determines the final effect. Due to the special usage scenario of brain electrodes, some specific properties are required for them. In this study, we review the development of three major types of EEG electrodes from the perspective of material selection and structural design, including dry electrodes, wet electrodes, and semi-dry electrodes. Additionally, we provide a reference for the current chaotic performance evaluation of EEG electrodes in some aspects such as electrochemical performance, stability, and so on. Moreover, the challenges and future expectations for EEG electrodes are analyzed.

Abstract:The non-implantation bi-directional brain-computer interface (BCI) is a neural interface technology that enables direct two-way communication between the brain and the external world by both "reading" neural signals and "writing" stimulation patterns to the brain. This technology has vast potential applications, such as improving the quality of life for individuals with neurological and mental illnesses and even expanding the boundaries of human capabilities. Nonetheless, non-implantation bi-directional BCIs face challenges in generating real-time feedback and achieving compatibility between stimulation and recording. These issues arise due to the considerable overlap between electrical stimulation frequencies and electrophysiological recording frequencies, as well as the impediment caused by the skull to the interaction of external and internal currents. To address those challenges, this work proposes a novel solution that combines the temporal interference stimulation paradigm and minimally invasive skull modification. A longitudinal animal experiment has preliminarily validated the feasibility of the proposed method. In signal recording experiments, the average impedance of our scheme decreased by 4.59 kΩ , about 67%, compared to the conventional technique at 18 points. The peak-to-peak value of the Somatosensory Evoked Potential increased by 8%. Meanwhile, the signal-to-noise ratio of Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential increased by 5.13 dB, and its classification accuracy increased by 44%. The maximum bandwidth of the resting state rose by 63%. In electrical stimulation experiments, the signal-to-noise ratio of the low-frequency response evoked by our scheme rose by 8.04 dB, and no stimulation artifacts were generated. The experimental results show that signal quality in acquisition has significantly improved, and frequency-band isolation eliminates stimulation artifacts at the source. The acquisition and stimulation pathways are real-time compatible in this non-implantation bi-directional BCI solution, which can provide technical support and theoretical guidance for creating closed-loop adaptive systems coupled with particular application scenarios in the future.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI), a communication technology between brain and computer developed for a long time since the 1970s, can be incorporated into wearable devices by developing powerful signal processing algorithms and semiconductor technologies. For a satisfactory user experience based on BCI, high information transfer rate and low power consumption should be considered together without losing accuracy. Although many existing BCI algorithms have been mainly focused solely on the accuracy, their deployment on wearable devices is not straightforward due to the limited hardware resources and computational capabilities. This tutorial summarizes recent advances in wearable BCI algorithms and hardware implementations from an algorithm-hardware co-design perspective and discusses future directions.

Abstract:A brain-computer interface (BCI) provides a non-muscular communication channel to people with and without disabilities. BCI devices consist of hardware and software. BCI hardware records signals from the brain, either invasively or non-invasively, using a series of device components. BCI software then translates these signals into device output commands and provides feedback. One may categorize different types of BCI applications into the following four categories: basic research, clinical/translational research, consumer products, and emerging applications. These four categories use BCI hardware and software, but have different sets of requirements. For example, while basic research needs to explore a wide range of system configurations, and thus requires a wide range of hardware and software capabilities, applications in the other three categories may be designed for relatively narrow purposes and thus may only need a very limited subset of capabilities. This paper summarizes technical aspects for each of these four categories of BCI applications. The results indicate that BCI technology is in transition from isolated demonstrations to systematic research and commercial development. This process requires several multidisciplinary efforts, including the development of better integrated and more robust BCI hardware and software, the definition of standardized interfaces, and the development of certification, dissemination and reimbursement procedures.
