Abstract:To create interspace-enlarged and sites-exposed graphene-based adsorbents for pollutant management, three-dimensional macrostructures (3D GTs) were facilely constructed via self-assembly of two-dimensional graphene oxide nanosheets (2D GO) and one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (1D CNTs). Since the existence of CNTs acting like frames may reinforce the mechanical strength of the GO nanosheets, the density of the stable and porous 3D GTs was reduced to 0.2mg/mL which was much lower than the minimum concentration required to form pure GO 3D macrostructures. The 3D GTs exhibited superior adsorption capabilities to emerging pollutants such as oxytetracycline (1729mg/g) and diethyl phthalate (680mg/g), and traditional pollutants such as methylene blue (685mg/g), Cd2+ (235mg/g) and diesel (421g/g). The adsorption capacity of 3D GTs is higher than the reported graphene/GO and CNTs-based adsorbents, which can be attributed to the synergistic effects of GO and CNTs in micro-environment, nano-substrate, and active sites. Firstly, the assembled GO sheets were highly separated and in monolayer form, which created large interspaces in 3D GTs. Secondly, GO and CNTs provided abundant adsorption sites. Thirdly, the micro environment of interspaces in stable 3D GTs could be tuned to achieve selective adsorption to particular pollutant. In short, we propose a super graphene-based adsorbent which is competitive and scalable for water purification.

Abstract:Just as graphene triggered a new gold rush, three-dimensional graphene-based macrostructures (3D GBM) have been recognized as one of the most promising strategies for bottom-up nanotechnology and become one of the most active research fields during the last four years. In general, the basic structural features of 3D GBM, including its large surface area, which enhances the opportunity to contact pollutants, and its well-defined porous structure, which facilitates the diffusion of pollutant molecules into the 3D structure, enable 3D GBM to be an ideal material for pollutant management due to its excellent capabilities and easy recyclability. This review aims to describe the environmental applications and mechanisms of 3D GBM and provide perspective. Thus, the excellent performance of 3D GBM in environmental pollutant adsorption, transformation and detection are reviewed. Based on the structures and properties of 3D GBM, the removal mechanisms for dyes, oils, organic solvents, heavy metals, and gas pollutants are highlighted. We attempt to establish "structure-property-application" relationships for environmental pollution management using 3D GBM. Approaches involving tunable synthesis and decoration to regulate the micro-, meso-, and macro-structure and the active sites are also reviewed. The high selectivity, fast rate, convenient management, device applications and recycling utilization of 3D GBM are also emphasized.

Abstract:Environmental pollution by heavy metal ions, organic pollutants, oils, pesticides or dyes is a ubiquitous problem adversely affecting human health and environmental ecology. Development and application novel adsorbents in full-scale treatment systems with effectiveness properties could effective ways to facilitate the extraction and adsorption of environment pollutants from wastewater. Graphene materials have drawn much attention due to their extraordinary electron mobilities, high surface areas, good thermal conductivities, and excellent mechanical properties. Three-dimensional graphene materials can provide the inherent advantages of 2D graphene sheets and exhibit micro/nanoporous structures, increased specific surface areas, high electron conductivities, fast mass transport kinetics, and strong mechanical strength. Potential applications for 3D graphene materials include environmental remediation, chemical and biological sensing, catalysis, and super capacitors. Recent advances in the applications of 3D functionalized graphene materials (3D FGMs) doped with heteroatoms for the extraction and adsorption of environmental pollutants in wastewater are summarized in this review.

Abstract:Three-dimensional graphene(3D) has attracted increasing attention due to its excellent performance such as light weight,high porosity,large specific surface area and high mechanical strength. In this paper,we report a simple and controllable method for the preparation of 3D architectures of graphene by the hydrothermal synthesis at 180 ℃.There were no chemical crosslinking agents are needed during the synthesis process. The as-prepared 3D graphene were characterized by use of X-ray diffraction,scanning electronic microscope,video contact angle measuring instrument and Raman spectroscope. The results show that the 3D graphene architectures have low densities,high porosity,high mechanical properties and high efficient absorption,compared with other methods,this method has shown better stability and reproducibility. The prepared 3D graphene can be expected to be used in the fields of supercapacitors,hydrogen storage,catalysts and environmental protection etc.

Abstract:Developing high-performance nanostructured sorbents for water treatment is of great importance. Herein, we report a facile strategy to fabricate three-dimensional hierarchical architectures by integrating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) into macroscopic graphite felt (GF) supports. The physicochemical properties of CNF@GF monoliths including surface areas, densities, porosities, and pore structures could be conveniently tuned by varying reaction time. The CNF@GF monoliths were utilized as advanced sorbents for the removal of Pb2+, Congo red, organic solvents, and oils from aqueous solutions. The characteristics of adsorption processes including kinetics, isotherms, and regeneration were investigated. It is demonstrated that the CNF@GF exhibits outstanding performance for water treatment in terms of adsorption capacities, recovering, and recyclability. As such, the versatile CNS@GF monoliths show great application potential for water treatment.
Sulfonated Graphene Nanosheets As A Superb Adsorbent for Various Environmental Pollutants in Water

Abstract:Graphene nanosheets, as a novel nanoadsorbent, can be further modified to optimize the adsorption capability for various pollutants. To overcome the structural limits of graphene (aggregation) and graphene oxide (hydrophilic surface) in water, sulfonated graphene (GS) was prepared by diazotization reaction using sulfanilic acid. It was demonstrated that GS not only recovered a relatively complete sp(2)-hybridized plane with high affinity for aromatic pollutants but also had sulfonic acid groups and partial original oxygen-containing groups that powerfully attracted positively charged pollutants. The saturated adsorption capacities of GS were 400 mg/g for phenanthrene, 906 mg/g for methylene blue and 58 mg/g for Cd(2+), which were much higher than the corresponding values for reduced graphene oxide and graphene oxide. GS as a graphene-based adsorbent exhibits fast adsorption kinetic rate and superior adsorption capacity toward various pollutants, which mainly thanks to the multiple adsorption sites in GS including the conjugate π region sites and the functional group sites. Moreover, the sulfonic acid groups endow GS with the good dispersibility and single or few nanosheets which guarantee the adsorption processes. It is great potential to expose the adsorption sites of graphene nanosheets for pollutants in water by regulating their microstructures, surface properties and water dispersion.

Abstract:The removal of various contaminants from aqueous systems by adsorption has been proven to be one of the most recommended approaches for the treatment of wastewater. Many significant advantages, such as relatively low cost, good availability, ease of fabrication and high efficiency, are included in this technology. In addition, the adsorption of inorganic/organic substances from aqueous solutions is also a potential alternative for the recovery of valuable substances from wastewater. Three-dimensional (3D) graphene (Gr)- and graphene oxide (GO)-based architectures have shown many advantages, such as good selectivity and high effectiveness in the adsorption of metal ions or organic molecules, and even viruses at very low concentration levels. Adsorption by 3D Gr/GO-based architectures is a complex process, and possible mechanisms such as ion exchange, chelation, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, surface adsorption, p-π interactions, p-p interactions, π-π stacking and van der Waals interactions involved in the adsorption processes have been also discussed in detail. Herein, we present a critical review for the rational selection of effective and multifunctional components, as well as the fabrication of well-designed novel 3D Gr/GO composites for selective adsorption of specific contaminants, which can provide references for researchers in related fields.

Large-flake Graphene-Modified Biochar for the Removal of Bisphenol S from Water: Rapid Oxygen Escape Mechanism for Synthesis and Improved Adsorption Performance

Abstract:The combined effects of graphene and biochar for enhanced adsorption of organic pollutants have not been demonstrated yet. Therefore, the mechanisms of graphene-modified biochar synthesis and its application to adsorption of contaminants remain unclear. In this study, the effect of flake-size graphene on biochar modification and its bisphenol S (BPS) adsorption performance was explored for the first time. Three sizes of graphene oxide were used as the precursor to prepare graphene/biochar composites using pyrolysis. It was found that the graphene with a small flake size was interspersed in the macropores of biochar, while the biochar was completely or mostly wrapped by the large-sized graphene sheet, which effectively prevented the agglomeration and pore blockage of biochar. Large-flake graphene oxide modified biochar (LGB) showed the highest adsorption capacity towards BPS, exhibiting 2.8 times higher adsorption than pristine biochar. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggested that the maximum diffusion barrier of O atoms in graphene coated cellulose (most frequently used biochar representative) could be reduced significantly (∼46%) at pyrolysis temperature of 873 K. Taking the advantage of small amount of graphene and enhanced adsorption performance, LGB could be a promising adsorbent for the removal of certain organic pollutants from wastewater and is conducive for the development of high-valued biochar modification.
Facile Large-Scale Synthesis of Macroscopic 3D Porous Graphene-Like Carbon Nanosheets Architecture for Efficient CO2 Adsorption

Abstract:Chemisorption of CO2 by amine-based solid adsorbents is an effective approach to reduce the greenhouse effect. However, the scalable fabrication of excellent materials with superior CO2 adsorption capacity and outstanding cycle performance remains a big challenge. Here we demonstrate a unique architecture of macroscopic 3D porous graphene-like carbon nanosheets (3D-PGCNs) through a simple one-step carbonization of a mixture of melamine and natural soybean oil. The key feature of 3D-PGCNs is that the formed ultrathin graphene-like carbon nanosheets have crumpled morphology and 3D interconnected macropore structure, leading to a high pore volume (3.48 cm(3) g(-1)) with capable of loading large amount of amine species. As a result, the 3D hybrid (3D-PEI-PGCNs) impregnated with 40 wt% polyethyleneimine (PEI) exhibits a high CO2 adsorption capacity of 117 mg g(-1) at 75 degrees C with excellent cycling stability. This work provides a new strategy for the simple, cost-effective and scalable synthesis of efficient and stable CO2 capture sorbents. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
3D-3D Porous Bi2WO6/graphene Hydrogel Composite with Excellent Synergistic Effect of Adsorption-Enrichment and Photocatalytic Degradation

Abstract:A novel visible-light 3D-3D Bi2WO6/graphene hydrogel (BWO/GH) photocatalyst with the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis has been successfully synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method and is applied in environment remediation. 3D porous graphene hydrogel, in which 3D-structured flower-like BWO as an efficient photocatalyst is homogenously distributed, not only exhibits the great absorption toward the organic pollution, but also provides multidimensional quality and electron transfer channels. The 3D-3D structure of BWO/GH composite is beneficial to light refraction and reflection, which highly improves the utilization rate of light. The synergistic effect of the 3D-3D BWO/GH composite greatly enhanced the removal rates of organic pollutants and it is ease of separation and recycling in water purification. The removal rate of methylene blue (MB) by BWO/GH composite is about 2.3 times as that of the pure BWO in static systems, and the removal rates of MB and 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-CDP) are about 1.3 and 3 times as these of the pure BWO in dynamic system. When the irradiation time lasted for 74h, the removal rate of MB is nearly unchanged and still kept at 36.1%, indicating that the 3D BWO/GH composite has a high stability. The construction of BWO/GH composite resolved the adsorption saturation problem of GH and improved the photocatalytic activity of BWO, thus greatly improved the removal rate of water pollutants. Abstract:Excessive emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) cause the greenhouse effect. CO2 capture and storage has been recognized as an important solution for reducing carbon dioxide emissions and coping with global warming. The synthesis of porous materials for effective CO2 adsorption is considered to be one of the most possible methods for CO2 capture and storage at present, however, achieving selective and efficient CO2 adsorption and conversion is still quite a challenge. Herein, a series of three-dimensional graphene-based materials (3D GBMs) were synthesized by alkali metal involved method, which showed high specific surface area (477.56 m2 g−1–792.96 m2 g−1) and abundant micropore and mesopore surface structures. We demonstrated that introducing N-containing or O-containing functional groups into the carbon framework can create more surface microporous structures and active adsorption sites, and significantly enhance the CO2 adsorption performance of 3D GBMs. Furthermore, it was found that the simultaneously introduction of the two kinds of functional groups into 3D GBMs could further increase the adsorption capacity of CO2 (from 2.06 mmol g−1 to 4.79 mmol g−1). All the above results indicate the treated 3D GBMs could have a great potential as efficient adsorbent in CO2 capture and storage.

Abstract:In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) graphene/manganese dioxide nanocomposite (PGA/MnO2) with a hierarchically porous structure was prepared by facile steam activation and MnO2 deposition strategies. The as-prepared PGA/MnO2 exhibited a 3D architecture with a high surface area of 490 m2 g–1. By characterization of morphology and structure of PGA/MnO2, MnO2 nanoparticles with small size (5–10 nm) were loaded on interconnected graphene sheets. Benefiting from the 3D porous nanostructure as well as the synergetic action between MnO2 and graphene, the PGA/MnO2 sample showed good adsorption ability for various metal ions (Pb2+, Cu2+, and UO22+). Especially, the adsorption capacity of Pb2+ on PGA/MnO2 can reach 247.3 mg g–1. The PGA/MnO2 with the porous structure also exhibited good capacitive deionization performance and had a NaCl adsorption capacity of up to 15.3 mg g–1 in a 500 mg L–1 solution. These results demonstrate that the resultant porous PGA/MnO2 is a promising adsorbent for water treatment application.

Abstract:In this study, three-dimensional network architectures are constructed using nano-sized graphene oxide (nGO) as the building block. The cross-linking reaction of nGO is conducted in sub-micrometre water droplets in an emulsion system to control the size of the networks by restricting the reaction space. Two types of three-dimensional GO networks with different cross-linking lengths were constructed, and their methyl orange adsorption and release behaviours were investigated under external stimuli, such as thermal treatment, ultrasonic wave treatment and near-infrared light irradiation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional graphene-based materials have emerged as adsorbents for various contaminants. This property is usually attributed to its high surface area. However, studies showing a positive correlation between surface area versus adsorptive capacity are not found in the literature. This review summarizes recent studies involving different types of adsorbents based on 3D graphene (including pure 3D graphene and composites) from the angle of experimental parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, and initial concentration. A particular focus is given to the correlation of their adsorption efficiency characteristics from the specific surface area, demonstrating that this parameter is not essential to obtaining good adsorption results. Furthermore, we will discuss their applications in removing various emerging pollutants from water (drugs, pesticides, hydrocarbons, organic solvents, endocrine disruptors), oils, dyes, and heavy metal ions, correlating fundamental properties of 3D materials with their efficiency. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of 3D graphene-based materials will be pointed out. Hopefully, this review will help design efficient 3D graphene adsorbents for pollutant removal.

Abstract:Abstract Graphene has attracted great interest for its unique structure, fantastic properties, and wide applications. Among the various applications, graphene-based materials hold great potential as adsorbents in decontaminating water because of the large surface area, diverse functionalities, ease of preparation, and low cost of treatment. Graphene and its composites have been used in treating heavy metals, dyes, pesticide, antibiotics, oils, and so on. In this paper, we reviewed the preparation methods of graphene adsorbents and their applications in water purification. The adsorption behaviors of contaminates on graphene are summarized. The interactions between graphene and contaminates are discussed, emphasizing the influence of functional groups. We also propose some guidelines in designing high-performance graphene adsorbents from the physicochemical perspective.

Abstract:Graphene in its various forms including three-dimensional structure has recently garnered considerable recognition due to its unique physicochemical and mechanical attributes. Specifically, its ultra-large surface area, tunable surface functionalities, abundant adsorption mechanisms and enhanced practical handling, have endowed graphene as a prospective adsorbent for environmental remediation. Heteroatom doping offers a promising approach for improving the adsorption properties of the nanomaterial. Thus, this review examines the potential of heteroatom-graphene adsorption systems in removing harmful aqueous pollutants. Here, the adsorption kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamics of heteroatom-doped graphene structures are discussed. The involvement of adsorption mechanisms such as π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, electron donor-acceptor, hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, in sequestrating the pollutants are also reviewed. Additionally, the state-of-the-art assessment on adsorption properties enhancement induced by heteroatom doping such as new functional groups with changeable charge, expandable interlayer spacing, larger surface area and wettability, is presented. Thereafter, the review focuses on hydrothermal synthesis of heteroatom-doped 3D graphene, a facile and scalable method which has received very limited attention to date. The hydrothermal governing parameters are discussed and evaluated with respect to the physicochemical and adsorption properties of the doped graphene. The utilization of density functional theory calculations to model 3D heteroatom-doped graphene systems for wastewater remediation is also studied. Finally, the review summarizes the current developments and identifies the challenges associated with hydrothermally synthesized 3D heteroatom-doped graphene for future work. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the use of heteroatom-doped graphene adsorbents for aqueous pollutants removal, as well as the strengths of heteroatom doping and hydrothermal synthesis in enhancing their adsorption efficacy.

Abstract:Graphene aerogel (GA) and hydrogel (GH) were oxidized using hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and nitric acid (HNO 3 ), respectively. The oxidized GA enhanced bisphenol A (BPA, hydrophobic) and methyl orange (MO, hydrophilic) adsorption. The accessibility of the air-closed pores in oxidized GA was enhanced due to the increase of oxygen-containing functional groups, exposing some new adsorption sites, as identified by 1 H NMR relaxation measurements. The oxidized GH inhibited BPA adsorption but increased MO adsorption. Higher oxygen-containing functional groups form water clusters and occupy adsorption sites for hydrophobic pollutants. Nevertheless, increased hydrophilicity facilitated the adsorption of hydrophilic pollutants. In addition, the adsorption rate of BPA on oxidized GA was decelerated, while that of MO was accelerated. The adsorption rates of both BPA and MO were accelerated on oxidized GH. This study emphasized that oxidation has different effects on the accessibility of air-enclosed pores and the adsorption properties of GA and GH.

Abstract:A three-dimensional porous graphene oxide (PGO) material prepared by hydrothermal method was selected to adsorb methylene blue (MB), which demonstrates a high MB adsorption capacity, up to 1100 mg g−1 in alkaline solution at room temperature. The influences of different pore structures and different contents of oxygen-containing functional groups on MB adsorption behaviors were studied in detail, which indicated that the high MB adsorption capacity is mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of the large number of oxygen-containing functional groups and the interconnected 3D porous network. Moreover, based on the investigation on the adsorption kinetics and the effect of pH value on MB adsorption, we propose a two-step adsorption kinetics for PGO, which involved in two interactions between MB molecular and porous graphene oxide-based carbon: electrostatic force and π-π stacking. Besides, the calculation of the activation energies indicates that chemisorption dominates the adsorption for PGO in comparison with physisorption for three-dimensional porous graphene materials which has low adsorption capacity because of the removal of functional groups. The results are of great significance for the design and environmental applications of PGO as a promising adsorbent material for water purification.

Abstract:Graphene-based nanomaterials have been used as separation membranes and adsorbents due to its unique two-dimensional single atomic layer structure, large specific surface area and excellent properties. In this paper, we first review gas, water and ions mass transport phenomenon through nanoporous graphene membranes and layered structures of graphene oxides. The development of nanoporous graphene has been limited by the current preparation technique and immature hole-drilling technology; while the laminated graphene oxide membranes have a great application potential in the field of water purification due to its simple, low-cost preparation methods, high permeability and selectivity. Then, we review the adsorption behaviors of heavy metal ions, dyes and organic pollutants in aqueous solution with graphene-based nanomaterials. The interaction mechanism between functional groups on graphene-based materials and pollutants has been analyzed. Finally, we prospect the opportunities and challenges of graphene-based nanomaterials in environmental applications, such as membrane separation, water desalination and pollutants removal.
