Abstract:Water scarcity has become an increasingly complex challenge with the growth of the global population, economic expansion, and climate change, highlighting the demand for advanced water treatment technologies that can provide clean water in a scalable, reliable, affordable, and sustainable manner. Recent advancements on 2D nanomaterials (2DM) open a new pathway for addressing the grand challenge of water treatment owing to their unique structures and superior properties. Emerging 2D nanostructures such as graphene, MoS2, MXene, h-BN, g-C3N4, and black phosphorus have demonstrated an unprecedented surface-to-volume ratio, which promises ultralow material use, ultrafast processing time, and ultrahigh treatment efficiency for water cleaning/monitoring. In this review, we provide a state-of-the-art account on engineered 2D nanomaterials and their applications in emerging water technologies, involving separation, adsorption, photocatalysis, and pollutant detection. The fundamental design strategies of 2DM are discussed with emphasis on their physicochemical properties, underlying mechanism and targeted applications in different scenarios. This review concludes with a perspective on the pressing challenges and emerging opportunities in 2DM-enabled wastewater treatment and water-quality monitoring. This review can help to elaborate the structure-processing-property relationship of 2DM, and aims to guide the design of next-generation 2DM systems for the development of selective, multifunctional, programmable, and even intelligent water technologies. The global significance of clean water for future generations sheds new light and much inspiration in this rising field to enhance the efficiency and affordability of water treatment and secure a global water supply in a growing portion of the world.

Abstract:Graphene-based nanomaterials have been used as separation membranes and adsorbents due to its unique two-dimensional single atomic layer structure, large specific surface area and excellent properties. In this paper, we first review gas, water and ions mass transport phenomenon through nanoporous graphene membranes and layered structures of graphene oxides. The development of nanoporous graphene has been limited by the current preparation technique and immature hole-drilling technology; while the laminated graphene oxide membranes have a great application potential in the field of water purification due to its simple, low-cost preparation methods, high permeability and selectivity. Then, we review the adsorption behaviors of heavy metal ions, dyes and organic pollutants in aqueous solution with graphene-based nanomaterials. The interaction mechanism between functional groups on graphene-based materials and pollutants has been analyzed. Finally, we prospect the opportunities and challenges of graphene-based nanomaterials in environmental applications, such as membrane separation, water desalination and pollutants removal.

Abstract:Abstract Graphene has attracted great interest for its unique structure, fantastic properties, and wide applications. Among the various applications, graphene-based materials hold great potential as adsorbents in decontaminating water because of the large surface area, diverse functionalities, ease of preparation, and low cost of treatment. Graphene and its composites have been used in treating heavy metals, dyes, pesticide, antibiotics, oils, and so on. In this paper, we reviewed the preparation methods of graphene adsorbents and their applications in water purification. The adsorption behaviors of contaminates on graphene are summarized. The interactions between graphene and contaminates are discussed, emphasizing the influence of functional groups. We also propose some guidelines in designing high-performance graphene adsorbents from the physicochemical perspective.

As these concerns intensify, the quest for innovative and efficient water treatment technologies becomes paramount. In recent years, graphene-based nanomaterials have emerged as frontrunners in this pursuit, showcasing exceptional properties that hold immense promise for addressing water contamination issues. Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, exhibits extraordinary mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties. These inherent characteristics have led to a surge of interest in leveraging graphene derivatives, such as graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide and functionalized graphene, for water treatment applications. The ability of graphene-based nanomaterials to adsorb, catalyze, and photocatalyze contaminants makes them highly versatile in addressing diverse pollutants present in water sources. This review will delve into the synthesis methods employed for graphene-based nanomaterials and explore the structural modifications and functionalization strategies implemented to increase their pollutant removal performance in water treatment. Abstract:Environmental pollution by heavy metal ions, organic pollutants, oils, pesticides or dyes is a ubiquitous problem adversely affecting human health and environmental ecology. Development and application novel adsorbents in full-scale treatment systems with effectiveness properties could effective ways to facilitate the extraction and adsorption of environment pollutants from wastewater. Graphene materials have drawn much attention due to their extraordinary electron mobilities, high surface areas, good thermal conductivities, and excellent mechanical properties. Three-dimensional graphene materials can provide the inherent advantages of 2D graphene sheets and exhibit micro/nanoporous structures, increased specific surface areas, high electron conductivities, fast mass transport kinetics, and strong mechanical strength. Potential applications for 3D graphene materials include environmental remediation, chemical and biological sensing, catalysis, and super capacitors. Recent advances in the applications of 3D functionalized graphene materials (3D FGMs) doped with heteroatoms for the extraction and adsorption of environmental pollutants in wastewater are summarized in this review.

Abstract:The treatment of organic wastewater is of great significance. Carbon nanotube (CNT)/graphene-based nanomaterials have great potential as absorbent materials for organic wastewater treatment owing to their high specific surface area, mesoporous structure, tunable surface properties, and high chemical stability; these attributes allow them to endure harsh wastewater conditions, such as acidic, basic, and salty conditions at high concentrations or at high temperatures. Although a substantial amount of work has been reported on the performance of CNT/graphene-based nanomaterials in organic wastewater systems, engineering challenges still exist for their practical application. Herein, the adsorption mechanism of CNT- and graphene-based nanomaterials is summarized, including the adsorption mechanism of CNTs and graphene at the atomic and molecular levels, their hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface properties, and the structure-property relationship required for adsorption to occur. Second, the structural modification and recombination methods of CNT- and graphene-based adsorbents for various organic wastewater systems are introduced. Third, the engineering challenges, including the molding of macroscopically stable adsorbents, adsorption isotherm models and adsorption kinetic behaviors, and reversible adsorption performance compared to that of activated carbon (AC) are discussed. Finally, cost issues are discussed in light of scalable and practical application of these materials.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials have been extensively employed for the removal of heavy metals and radionuclides from water and wastewater. This work critically reviews the current status of research works on the use of graphene, as well as its modified materials, and their efficacy for the adsorption of heavy metals and radionuclides. It focuses on the examination of different factors influencing the adsorption capacity, including the properties of graphene-based materials, solution pH, contact time, initial concentration of metal ions, initial dosage of graphene-based materials, temperature, organic acid ligands, coexisting ions, and competitive adsorption. Adsorption dynamics, isotherms, and thermodynamics are addressed in some detail. The proposed adsorption mechanisms deduced by various characterization methods and analytical techniques involve in one or combination of the electrostatic interaction, surface complexation, ion exchange, reduction, and precipitation. Many graphene-based materials have proved to be stable and regenerable over a number of adsorption–desorption cycles. Further research trends on the practical application of graphene-based materials are also given.

Abstract:Graphene, a two-dimensional hexagonal honeycomb carbon structure, is widely used in membrane technologies thanks to its unique optical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, chemical and photoelectric properties. The light weight, mechanical strength, anti-bacterial effect, and pollution-adsorption properties of graphene membranes are valuable in water treatment studies. Incorporation of nanoparticles like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and metal oxide into the graphene filtering nanocomposite membrane structure can provide an improved photocatalysis process in a water treatment system. With the rapid development of graphene nanocomposites and graphene nanocomposite membrane-based acoustically supported filtering systems, including CNTs and visible-light active metal oxide photocatalyst, it is necessary to develop the researches of sustainable and environmentally friendly applications that can lead to new and groundbreaking water treatment systems. In this review, characteristic properties of graphene and graphene nanocomposites are examined, various methods for the synthesis and dispersion processes of graphene, CNTs, metal oxide and polymer nanocomposites and membrane fabrication and characterization techniques are discussed in details with using literature reports and our laboratory experimental results. Recent membrane developments in water treatment applications and graphene-based membranes are reviewed, and the current challenges and future prospects of membrane technology are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Graphene-based materials have received much attention as attractive candidates for the adsorptive removal of pollutants from water due to their large surface area and diverse active sites for adsorption. The design of graphene-based adsorbents for target pollutants is based on the underlying adsorption mechanisms. Understanding the adsorption performance of graphene-based materials and its correlation to the interaction mechanisms between the pollutants and adsorbents is crucial to the further development of graphene-based functional materials and their practical applications. This review summarizes recent advances on the development of graphene-based materials for the adsorption of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oils, and the co-adsorption of their mixture from water. The material design, performance, regeneration and reuse of adsorbents, and the associated adsorption mechanisms are discussed. Various techniques for mechanistic studies of the adsorption of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oils on graphene-based materials are highlighted. The remaining challenges and perspectives for future development and investigation of graphene-based materials as adsorbents are also presented.</p>

Abstract:Membrane separation technology has attracted increasing research interest and plays an important role in industrial wastewater treatment, urban sewage purification, oil and water separation, hence the search for perfect separation membrane is being given serious consideration. Graphene and its derivatives have significant potential applications owing to their atomic thickness, adjustable physicochemical properties and unique two-dimensional interlayer channels. It is considered as attractive components for the construction of high-performance separation membranes, which promises to break the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, leading to the ultimate separation. In this review, the current strategies that are promising in the synthesis and fabrication of graphene separation membranes (GSMs) are introduced and extensively discussed. Further the research progresses of imbedding nanoparticles in GSMs in recent years are reviewed, and the strategies of constructing GSMs with different interlayer spacing to improve membrane efficiency are explored. Finally, the application of GSMs in water purification and seawater desalination is demonstrated, highlighting some outstanding challenges associated with future perspectives in this field which would inspire the research design of next-generation GSMs.

Abstract:Considering the plethora of work on the exceptional environmental performance of 2D nanomaterials, there is still a missing link in addressing their practical application in point-of-use (POU) water treatment. By reviewing the exceptional environmental performance of 2D nanomaterials with specific emphasis on graphene and its derivatives, this review aims at inspiring further discussions and research in graphene-based POU water treatment with particular focus on the removal of emerging contaminants of concern (ECCs), which is largely missing in the literature. We outlined the prevalence of ECCs in the environment, their health effects both on humans and marine life, and the potential of efficiently removing them from water using three-dimensional graphene-based macrostructures to ensure ease of adsorbent recovery and reuse compared to nanostructures. Given various successful studies showing superior adsorption capacity of graphene nanosheets, we give an account of the recent developments in graphene-based adsorbents. Moreover, several cost-effective materials which can be easily self-assembled with nanosheets to improve their environmental performance and safety for POU water treatment purposes were highlighted. We highlighted the strategy to overcome challenges of adsorbent regeneration and contaminant degradation; and concluded by noting the need for policy makers to act decisively considering the conservative nature of the water treatment industry, and the potential health risks from ingesting ECCs through drinking water. We further justified the need for the development of advanced POU water treatment devices in the face of the growing challenges regarding ECCs in surface water, and the rising cases of drinking water advisories across the world.

Abstract:Fabrication of nanoporous membranes from two-dimensional nanomaterial has recently gained increased research interest because of their flexibility, freestanding film formability, selectivity, and ability to withstand the applied transmembrane pressure. Among various 2D materials, graphene and its derivatives are widely employed for the preparation of next-generation membranes due to their excellent separation properties with inherent qualities like atomic thickness, good tensile strength, and frictionless surface for real-time applications. This review discusses the recent progress in three types of porous graphene-based materials, which are holey graphene, graphene nanomesh and graphene oxide laminates, and their applicability for membrane separations. This review aims to summarize the preparation and properties of these membranes for water purification application. The various factors which influence the separation efficiency of the graphene-derived membranes such as mechanical stability, effect of surface architecture, effect of interlayer spacing, and various crosslinking strategies are also discussed.

Abstract:Water scarcity is a pressing issue experienced in numerous countries and is expected to become increasingly critical in the future. Anthropogenic activities such as mining, agriculture, industries, and domestic waste discharge toxic contaminants into natural water bodies, causing pollution. Addressing these environmental crises requires tackling the challenge of removing pollutants from water. Graphene oxide (GO), a form of graphene functionalized with oxygen-containing chemical groups, has recently garnered renewed interest due to its exceptional properties. These properties include a large surface area, mechanical stability, and adjustable electrical and optical characteristics. Additionally, surface functional groups like hydroxyl, epoxy, and carboxyl groups make GO an outstanding candidate for interacting with other materials or molecules. Because of its expanded structural diversity and enhanced overall properties, GO and its composites hold significant promise for a wide range of applications in energy storage, conversion, and environmental protection. These applications encompass hydrogen storage materials, photocatalysts for water splitting, the removal of air pollutants, and water purification. Serving as electrode materials for various lithium batteries and supercapacitors. Graphene-based materials, including graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, graphene polymer nanocomposites, and graphene nanoparticle metal hybrids, have emerged as valuable tools in energy and environmental remediation technologies. This review article provides an overview of the significant impact of graphene-based materials in various areas. Regarding energy-related topics, this article explores the applications of graphene-based materials in supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and catalysts for fuel cells. Additionally, the article investigates recent advancements in detecting and treating persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals using nanomaterials. The article also discusses recent developments in creating innovative nanomaterials, nanostructures, and treatment methods for addressing POPs and heavy metals in water. Abstract:Two-dimensional carbon materials such as the 2D nanoweb-like graphyne membrane are promising as molecular sieves for energy and environmental applications. Based on the application of water purification - the removal of contaminants from wastewater and seawater - here we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the interplay between mechanical forces, filtration mechanisms, and overall performance for graphyne membranes with different pore sizes. We carry out biaxial tensile tests and verify the superior mechanical robustness and tolerance of graphyne membranes against possible deformations from the membrane installation process. A possible ultimate stress in excess of 15 GPa and an ultimate strain of 1.2-2.7% are determined. We also demonstrate their excellent filtration performance with barrier-free water permeation and perfect rejection of the representative contaminants considered here, including divalent heavy metal salts (copper sulfate), hydrophobic organic chemicals (benzene and carbon tetrachloride), and inorganic monovalent salts (sodium chloride). We find that graphtriyne, with an effective pore diameter of 3.8 Å, exhibits an optimal purification performance, because the contaminant rejection rate is more sensitive to pore size than water permeability. In addition, we find that the hydrophobic graphyne membranes exhibit higher rejection rates for hydrophilic contaminants compared to the hydrophobic ones. This size exclusion effect is a result of the larger hydrated radii of hydrophilic species due to stronger interactions between them and water molecules. Finally, we find that the maximum deformation of graphtriyne at the ultimate strain before material failure has only a minor impact on its filtration performance. One of the advantages of using graphyne for water purification is that no chemical functionalization or defects need to be introduced, which maintains the structural integrity of the membrane, and possibly, the long-term device performance.

Abstract:Significant achievements have been made on the development of next-generation filtration and separation membranes using graphene materials, as graphene-based membranes can afford numerous novel mass-transport properties that are not possible in state-of-art commercial membranes, making them promising in areas such as membrane separation, water desalination, proton conductors, energy storage and conversion, etc. The latest developments on understanding mass transport through graphene-based membranes, including perfect graphene lattice, nanoporous graphene and graphene oxide membranes are reviewed here in relation to their potential applications. A summary and outlook is further provided on the opportunities and challenges in this arising field. The aspects discussed may enable researchers to better understand the mass-transport mechanism and to optimize the synthesis of graphene-based membranes toward large-scale production for a wide range of applications.
Nano-/Micro-confined Water in Graphene Hydrogel as Superadsorbents for Water Purification

Abstract:Abstract Confined water has been proven to be of great importance due to its pervasiveness and contribution to life and many fields of scientific research. However, the control and characterization of confined water are a challenge. Herein, a confined space is constructed by flexibly changing the pH of a graphene oxide dispersion under the self-assembly process of a graphene hydrogel (GH), and the confined space is adjusted with variation from 10.04 to 3.52 nm. Confined water content in GH increases when the pore diameter of the confined space decreases; the corresponding adsorption capacity increases from 243.04 to 442.91 mg g −1 . Moreover, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy are utilized to analyze the hydrogen bonding structure qualitatively and quantitatively, and correlation analysis reveals that the improvement in the adsorption capacity is caused by incomplete hydrogen bonding in the confined water. Further, confined water is assembled into four typical porous commercial adsorbents, and a remarkable enhancement of the adsorption capacity is achieved. This research demonstrates the application potential for the extraordinary properties of confined water and has implications for the development of highly effective confined water-modified adsorbents.

Abstract:Nowadays, water shortage has become an ever-increasing severe problem for human beings. Lately, there has been exciting progress in two different ways for desalination, namely, interfacial solar evaporation and film filtration. Graphene oxide based film is playing a critical role in both developments due to its high absorption, porous structure, high chemical stability, hydrophilicity, and excellent anti-fouling properties. In this works, we first introduce the mechanisms and key requirements for interfacial solar evaporation and filtration based desalination, and then explain how various forms of graphene oxide can be tailored for both types of desalination. Then, we summarize and discuss recent researches concerning both relevant technology advances and persisting problems, and finally provide a prospective view.
Tuneable Fluidics Within Graphene Nanogaps for Water Purification and Energy Storage

Abstract:Precise control of liquid-solid interactions within sub-micrometer spaces is critical to maximize the active surface areas in porous materials, yet is challenging because of the limited liquid penetration. Here we discover an effective, dry-climate natural plant-inspired approach to guide water into sub-micrometer graphene microwells (Sub-μGWs) and to tune the transition from the hydrophobic to superhydrophilic states. Dry plasma texturing of Sub-μGWs by graphene 'nano-flaps' which adjust the tilt and density upon controlled liquid evaporation leads to controlled and stable sub-micrometer-scale surface modification and variable wettability in a wide range. This effect helps capture Au nanoparticles on the Sub-μGW surfaces as a proof-of-principle water purification platform and tune the charge-storage capacity and frequency response of Sub-μGW-based supercapacitors without altering the Sub-μGW backbones. The outcomes may be extended into diverse materials and solutions thus opening new opportunities for next-generation devices, systems and applications.
