Abstract:A kind of surface functionalized chelating fiber prepared by immobilizing amino‐group on surface of polyacrylonitrile fiber (APAF) was used for As(V) adsorption. Results indicated that tetraethylenepentamine was the optimum amine agent, and addition of AlCl3 in preparation could strengthen the removal of As(V) by APAF. The morphology of APAF observed by SEM showed that heterogeneous protuberances existed on the surface of APAF due to nitrile groups transferring between the amine agents and polyacrylonitrile polymers. Zeta potential measurement suggested the pHzpc of APAF increased greatly after amination, beneficial of As(V) adhesion. The effects of initial solution concentration, pH, and contact time on adsorption of As (V) ions have been investigated in detail. The maximum equilibrium uptake capacity of As(V) on APAF was 327.26 mg/g at 298 K and Langmuir isotherm equation well fitted to the experimental data. Mechanism study indicated that the protonated amine groups on the fiber surface were responsible for sorption of As(V) on the APAF. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 35: 1634–1641, 2016
