Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:Investigation into the properties and structure of unstable nuclei far from stability is a key avenue of research in modern nuclear physics. These efforts are motivated by the continual observation of unexpected structure phenomena in nuclei with unusual proton-to-neutron ratios. In recent decades, laser spectroscopy techniques have made significant contributions in our understanding of exotic nuclei in different mass regions encompassing almost the entire nuclear chart. This is achieved through determining multiple fundamental properties of nuclear ground and isomeric states, such as nuclear spins, magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments and charge radii, via the measurement of hyperfine structures and isotope shifts in the atomic or ionic spectra of the nuclei of interest. These properties offer prominent tests of recently developed state-of-the-art nuclear theory and help to stimulate new developments in improving the many-body methods and nucleon–nucleon interactions at the core of these models. With the aim of exploring more exotic short-lived nuclei located ever closer to the proton and neutron driplines, laser spectroscopy techniques, with their continuous technological developments towards higher resolution and higher sensitivity, are extensively employed at current- and next-generation radioactive ion beam facilities worldwide. Ongoing efforts in parallel promise to improve the availability of these even more exotic species at next-generation facilities. Very recently, an innovative application of laser spectroscopy on molecules containing short-lived nuclei has been demonstrated offering additional opportunities for several fields of research, e.g. fundamental symmetry studies and astrophysics. In this review, the basic nuclear properties measurable with laser spectroscopy will be introduced. How these observables are associated with nuclear structure and nucleon–nucleon interactions will be discussed. Following this, a general overview of different laser spectroscopy methods will be given with particular emphasis on technical advancements reported in recent years. The main focus of this article is to review the numerous highlights that have resulted from studying exotic nuclei in different mass regions with laser spectroscopy techniques since the last edition in this series. Finally, the challenges facing the field in addition to future opportunities will be discussed.
Embedded metal cluster in strong laser fields

Abstract:We discuss microscopic mechanisms of the violent dynamics following strong laser excitation of a metal cluster embedded in a rare gas matrix, taking as test case Na$_8$@Ar$_434$. This covers at least two aspects : first, it represents the typical experimental situation of metal clusters handled in raregas matrices or a finite drop of surrounding raregas material, and second, it serves as a generic test case for highly excited chromophores in inert surroundings addressing questions of energy transport and perturbation of the medium. We simulate the process up to 10 ps using a mixed quantum mechanical (for the electrons) and classical (ions and atoms) approach and analyze the emerging dynamics with respect to all basic constituents : cluster electrons, cluster ions, and matrix atoms. We find several stages of relaxation taking place with time scales from a few fs to over a few ps and much slower processes remaining for long after the simulation. A particularly interesting aspect is that the surrounding raregas material stabilizes a highly charged metal cluster which would otherwise explode without delay.

Effect of Cluster Coulomb Fields on Electron Acceleration in Laser-Cluster Interaction

Abstract:Single particle simulations are used to investigate electron acceleration in the laser-cluster interaction, taking into account the Coulomb fields around individual clusters. These Coulomb fields are induced from the cluster cores with positive charge when electrons escape from the cluster cores through ponderomotive push from the laser field. These Coulomb fields enable some stripped electrons to be stochastically in phases with the laser fields so that they can gain net energy from the laser efficiently. In this heating mechanism, circularly polarized lasers, larger cluster size and higher cluster densities make the acceleration more efficient.

Abstract:The properties of high energy density plasma are under increasing scrutiny in recent years due to their importance to our understanding of stellar interiors, the cores of giant planets$^{1}$, and the properties of hot plasma in inertial confinement fusion devices$^2$. When matter is heated by X-rays, electrons in the inner shells are ionized before the valence electrons. Ionization from the inside out creates atoms or ions with empty internal electron shells, which are known as hollow atoms (or ions)$^{3,4,5}$. Recent advances in free-electron laser (FEL) technology$^{6,7,8,9}$ have made possible the creation of condensed matter consisting predominantly of hollow atoms. In this Letter, we demonstrate that such exotic states of matter, which are very far from equilibrium, can also be formed by more conventional optical laser technology when the laser intensity approaches the radiation dominant regime$^{10}$. Such photon-dominated systems are relevant to studies of photoionized plasmas found in active galactic nuclei and X-ray binaries$^{11}$. Our results promote laser-produced plasma as a unique ultra-bright x-ray source for future studies of matter in extreme conditions as well as for radiography of biological systems and for material science studies$^{12,13,14,15}$.

Cluster formation dynamics in a locally-confined gas layer mixed with the plume ablated by pulsed laser irradiation

Abstract:The dynamical process of pulsed laser ablation is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations in order to develop a new cluster source. The interaction between the ablated Cu vapor plume and the He ambient gas induces strong shock compression of the gas by which the gas density is one order of magnitude increased and forms a stable gas layer mixed with the plume at the contact front. It is found that even with the target-wall distance as short as about 80 mu m, a mixed layer more than 10 mu m in thickness can be formed at about 15 mu m away from the source wall. This layer can be locally-confined for a considerable long time of hundreds of ns. Frequent collisions occur among the atoms of vapor and gas within the confined layer which induce effective cluster aggregation. The thermodynamic state of this region is well defined, so that the mono-dispersed growth condition might form cluster beam with well-defined internal freedom. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract:A comparative experimental study of pulsed laser ablation in vacuum of two binary semiconductors, zinc oxide and indium phosphide, has been performed using IR-and visible laser pulses with particular attention to cluster generation. Neutral and cationic Zn\_n O\_m and In\_n P\_m particles of various stoichiometry have been produced and investigated by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. At ZnO ablation, large cationic (n>9) and all neutral clusters are mainly stoichiometric in the ablation plume. In contrast, indium phosphide clusters are strongly indium-rich with In\_4 P being a magic cluster. Analysis of the plume composition upon laser exposure has revealed congruent vaporization of ZnO and a disproportionate loss of phosphorus by the irradiated InP surface. Plume expansion conditions under ZnO ablation are shown to be favourable for stoichiometric cluster formation. A delayed vaporization of phosphorus under InP ablation has been observed that results in generation of off-stoichiometric clusters.

Abstract:Clusters excited by intense laser pulses are a unique source of warm dense matter, that has been the subject of intensive experimental studies. The majority of those investigations concerns atomic clusters, whereas the evolution of molecular clusters excited by intense laser pulses is less explored. In this work we trace the dynamics of $\mathrm{CO_2}$ clusters triggered by a few-cycle 1.45-$\mu$m driving pulse through the detection of XUV fluorescence induced by a delayed 800-nm ignition pulse. Striking differences among fluorescence dynamics from different ionic species are observed.
Cluster assembled materials: a novel class of nanostructured solids with original structures and properties

Abstract:The low-energy cluster beam deposition technique (LECBD) is applied to produce cluster assembled films with hitherto unknown nanostructured morphologies and properties. Neutral clusters having the very low energy gained in the supersonic expansion at the exit of the inert gas condensation-type source are deposited without fragmentation upon impact on the substrate. Depending on the deposition conditions (nature, size and flux of incident clusters, nature and temperature of the substrate, vacuum conditions), granular nanostructures resulting from the diffusion and coalescence of supported clusters are obtained with materials of any type (covalent or metallic). A critical size for coalescence limits the supported grain size and, finally, highly porous thick films growing by random stacking of nanoparticles are obtained. A recent model developed by combining several dynamical processes simultaneously occurring on the substrate (deposition - diffusion - aggregation, DDA) is used to simulate the cluster assembled film morphology in good agreement with the experimental observations. Examples of novel materials obtained by LECBD are presented to illustrate the interesting potentialities of the technique. In the case of covalent materials such as carbon and silicon, 'amorphon'-type disordered structures, different from the conventional amorphous structures (a-C and a-Si), are obtained with some unique properties. With transition metal (Fe, Co and Ni) cluster assembled films, a specific magnetic behaviour, resulting from the competition between the intrinsic properties of the grains (magnetocrystalline anisotropy) and the interactions between grains, is observed. Also, films of clusters embedded in various co-deposited matrices are produced in order to control the interactions between grains via the matrix materials (insulating, conducting ...). Interesting optical properties (from metallic clusters in ) or giant magnetoresistance effects (from Co clusters in silver) are reported for such systems, emphasizing the future role of LECBD in various fields of applications such as optical and optoelectronic nanostructures, magnetic and magneto-optic nanostructures and quantum devices.

Abstract:The present discussion deals with some theoretical aspects associated with the description of molecular rate processes in the presence of intense laser radiation, where the radiation actually interacts with the molecular dynamics. Whereas for weak and even moderately intense radiation, the absorption and stimulated emission of photons by a molecular system can be described by perturbative methods, for intense radiation, perturbation theory is usually not adequate. Limiting the analysis to the gas phase, an attempt is made to describe nonperturbative approaches applicable to the description of such processes (in the presence of intense laser radiation) as electronic energy transfer in molecular (in particular atom-atom) collisions; collision-induced ionization and emission; and unimolecular dissociation.

Abstract:The interaction of intense laser fields with silver and argon clusters is investigated theoretically using a modified nanoplasma model. Single pulse and double pulse excitations are considered. The influence of the dense cluster environment on the inner ionization processes is studied including the lowering of the ionization energies. There are considerable changes in the dynamics of the laser-cluster interaction. Especially, for silver clusters, the lowering of the ionization energies leads to increased yields of highly charged ions.

Abstract:The direct laser writing (DLW) of photoluminescent metal clusters is inspiring intensive research in functional glasses. However, understanding the influence of the host structure on cluster formation and visualizing DLW-induced clusters at the atomic scale remains challenging. In this work, we develop a highly photosensitive fluorophosphate glass through fluorine incorporation. The addition of fluorine establishes a conducive environment for Ag+ ions before DLW and enhances the availability of reducing agents and diffusion pathways during DLW. These advantages facilitate the formation of Ag clusters under low-energy single-pulsed DLW. Increasing laser energy results in a combination of Ag clusters and glasses defect, forming a dot + ring photoluminescent pattern. Atom probe tomography (APT), a technique capable of mapping the elemental spatial distribution and identifying clustering, is employed to gain more information on laser-induced clusters. Comparison of APT results between samples without and with DLW reveals the formation of Ag clusters after laser writing. The design concept and characterization enrich the understanding of Ag cluster behavior in glasses. This knowledge opens the possibility of rational design of clusters confined in glasses and inspires their synthesis for various applications.

Abstract:A semiclassical theory of radiative transitions for molecular collisions in an intense laser field is developed. The resulting expressions for the S-matrix involve electronic-field potential surfaces which are constructed from field-free adiabatic surfaces and transition moments. The electronic-field surfaces, which exhibit avoided crossings due to radiative coupling, are analytically continued to complex intersection points (branch points). Transitions between two such surfaces are effected by classical trajectories propagating on one surface and passing smoothly to the other surface through a branch point. Each of the two surfaces is seen to be a branch of a quadruple-valued potential function, and the branch-point structure of this function is related to field-free nonadiabatic coupling and dynamic radiative coupling. Interference effects between these two kinds of couplings are discussed and illustrated for model potentials. Numerical results show enhanced transition probabilities for the collinear process Br(2P3/2)+H2(v=0)+h/ω →Br(2P1/2)+H2(v=0). Experimental investigations of laser enhanced energy transfer, interference effects, and the possible formation of long-lived complexes, which are not necessarily present in the field-free case, are suggested for a molecular beam experiment carried out in the presence of a laser beam.

Abstract:Building molecular machine has long been a dream of scientists as it is expected to revolutionize many aspects of technology and medicine. Implementing the solid-state molecular motion is the prerequisite for a practical molecular machine. However, few works on solid-state molecular motion have been reported and it is almost impossible to “see” the motion even if it happens. Here the light-driven molecular motion in solid state is discovered in two non-conjugated molecules s-DPE and s-DPE-TM, resulting in the formation of excited-state though-space complex (ESTSC). Meanwhile, the newly formed ESTSC generates an abnormal visible emission which is termed as clusteroluminescence. Notably, the original packing structure can recover from ESTSC when the light source is removed. These processes have been confirmed by time-resolved spectroscopy and quantum mechanics calculation. This work provides a new strategy to manipulate and “see” solid-state molecular motion and gains new insights into the mechanistic picture of clusteroluminescence.
High-efficiency cluster laser vaporization sources based on Ti: sapphire lasers

Abstract:A new laser vaporization source based on a flashlamp-pumped Ti:sapphire laser has been used to produce cluster beams. The performance is compared to the standard cluster sources based on neodyme YAG lasers. We show that the Ti:sapphire source is much more efficient: the clusters deposition rate are about 30 times higher, and larger clusters are produced. Finally the quality of nanostructured films is comparable to those obtained by the standard source, but the time deposition is 30 times shorter. This opens new possibilites for film growth by cluster deposition.

Abstract:Clusteroluminescence (CL) materials, as an emerging class of luminescent materials with unique photophysical properties, have received increasing attention owing to their great theoretical significance and potential for biological applications. Although much progress has been made in the design, synthesis and application of CL materials, there is still a big challenge in the emission mechanism. So far, through-space interaction has been proposed as the preliminary mechanism of the corresponding clusterization-triggered emission (CTE) effect, but a systematic theory is still needed. This review summarizes the current mechanistic understanding of CL materials including organic/inorganic small molecules, and polymers with/without isolated aromatic structures. In addition, some strategies to achieve high quantum yield, adjustable emission color, and persistent room temperature phosphorescence in CL materials are also summarized. At last, a perspective of the mechanism and application of CL materials are demonstrated, which inspire the researchers working on the development of new kinds of functional materials.

Abstract:The structures and properties of the atomic clusters are neither like those of the corresponding atoms and molecules nor bulk solid. It is quite natural that the materials composed of those clusters exhibit some new properties. Moreover, cluster assemblies have shown even large variety of optical, electric and magnetic responses due to localized coupling between the clusters, leading to the enhancement of certain unusual properties. In this review we present some examples such as the enhanced Raman scattering of ordered lattice of metal clusters, multi-phase plasmon excitation of silver cluster dimer and cluster chains by electrons and photons. We demonstrate that the novel properties of these cluster assemblies could have potential applications in manufacturing new-type nanomaterials and quantum devices, such as plasmonics and nano-optical devices.
Floquet Engineering of a Diatomic Molecule Through a Bichromatic Radiation Field

Abstract:We report on a theoretical study of a Cs$_2$ molecule illuminated by two lasers and show how it can result in novel quantum dynamics. We reveal that these interactions facilitate the bypass of the non-crossing rule, forming Light-Induced Conical Intersections and modifiable avoided crossings. Our findings show how laser field orientation and strength, along with initial phase differences, can control molecular state transitions, especially on the micromotion scale. We also discuss extensively how the interaction of radiation with matter gives rise to the emergence of potential energy surfaces of hybrids of radiation and molecular states. This research advances a technique for manipulating photoassociation processes in Cs$_2$ molecules, offering potential new avenues in quantum control.

Abstract:Phosphorus clusters containing up to 35 atoms are generated by laser ablation of red phosphorus using a XeCl laser (308 nm). The cluster cations ate identified by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. It is found that for an odd number of phosphorus atoms, bare cluster cations are preferentially produced, whereas for even number phosphorus atom clusters the cluster cations with an odd number of hydrogens (present in a trace amount in the source) are easily produced. The structural details of those clusters abundant in the laser ablation mass spectrum are discussed with the aid of theoretical (ab initio) model calculations.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary The study of luminescence phenomena in non‐conjugated systems, namely clusteroluminescence, has gained significant attention for the development of advanced luminescent materials. While conventional strategies to manipulate the luminescent performances are based on complicated chemical reactions. In contrast, nature employs complexation to modulate luminescence, inspiring researchers to adopt an engineering approach for the construction of efficient clusteroluminogens. In this work, we explore the complexation‐induced clusteroluminescence of carbonyl‐based polymers with nitrogen‐containing organic bases, exemplified by polyamide, polyester, polycarbonate, and poly(monothiocarbonate). The results demonstrate an increase in the intrinsic 440 nm emission of carbonyl groups and the emergence of new emission peaks upon complexation. The study proposes a through‐space n‧‧‧π complex mechanism, highlighting the potential of complexation as a strategy for modulating the clusteroluminescent properties of non‐conjugated systems. Further research is necessary to unravel underlying mechanisms, optimize cluster structures, and explore new materials for complexation, thereby advancing optoelectronics and photonics fields and enabling practical applications of clusteroluminescent materials.
