Abstract:Herein flower-like silver nanostructures with different size and ratio of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) to face-centered cubic (FCC) phase were synthetized. By comparing with the results utilizing different surfactants, the growth process of Ag nanostructures has been investigated. Flower-like Ag nanoparticles containing numerous hot spots could serve as excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, and the Raman signal of Rhodamine 6G with the concentration as low as 10-6 M can be recognized.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy has attracted much attention because it is a sensitive non-destructive technique offering the possibility of quantitative analysis down to the molecular level. Much research has hitherto been dedicated to the fabrication of substrates with high enhancement effects based on the electromagnetic or chemical mechanism. In this work, surfaced-enhanced Raman scattering is performed to probe rhodamine 6 g on highly-ordered multi-scale silver nano-arrays prepared by magnetron sputtering using templates with close end tubes of titania (TiO2) membranes. The surface morphology can be controlled by adjusting the anodization voltage and thickness of the silver film. This simple and flexible technique produces substrates with high enhancement factors stemming from controlled optimization of the hot spots. The electromagnetic field distribution is analyzed by finite difference time domain simulation and the theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement revealing the potential of rapid surfaced-enhanced Raman scattering detection. This low-cost and rapid technique can be readily scaled up for mass production.

Abstract:The tunable silver nano-pillar arrays were fabricated by using Electron Beam Lithography and direct current magnetron sputtering technique successfully. Abstract:Silver nanocrystals were fabricated via a conventional hydro-thermal method, which is based on a general phase transfer and separation mechanism occurring at the interfaces of the liquid, solid, and solution phases present during the synthesis. A convenient nanotechnique to assemble silver nanocrystals with precise control of gaps in the sub-10 nm regime on Si wafer is demonstrated for a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active coating. The silver nanocrystal coating is of high SERS enhancement factor and large dynamical range. The observed SERS efficiency can be explained in terms of interparticle-coupling- induced Raman enhancement.
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering from silver nanostructures with different morphologies

Abstract:Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction reveal that four different types of crystalline silver nanostructures including nanoparticles, nanowires, nanocubes, and bipyramids are synthesized by a solvothermal method by reducing silver nitrate with ethylene glycol using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as an adsorption agent and adding different quantities of sodium chloride to the solution. These nanostructures which exhibit different surface plasma resonance properties in the ultraviolet–visible region are shown to be good surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates using rhodamine 6G molecules. Our results demonstrate that the silver nanocubes, bipyramids with sharp corners and edges, and aggregated silver nanoparticles possess better SERS properties than the silver nanowires, indicating that they can serve as high-sensitivity substrates in SERS-based measurements.

Abstract:Raman spectra are considered as signatures of matter and have been widely used to identify several classes of materials. The development of mobile spectrometers further extends applications of Raman spectroscopy, and both indoor/outdoor and in vivo/in vitro measurements have been evaluated on site. However, the finite detection level restricts its application in high density matters. Here we report a facile silver nanoparticle decorated nanoporous gold (NanoAg@NPG) substrate, which can provide high enhancement of the Raman signal from nearby molecules by 785 nm photoexcitation. This enhancement is attributed to the abundant Raman-active nanogaps constructed by adjacent nanoparticles and also by the NPG ligaments and adhered nanoparticles. This NanoAg@NPG substrate shows great potential as a reproducible and quantifiable near infrared surface-enhanced Raman scattering probe for various targets, since it performs well in the so-called biological window which can avoid autofluorescence and absorption either from targets or surroundings in the visible optical region.

Abstract:Based on diffusion-limited aggregation process, a convenient nanotechnique is demonstrated to obtain large silver fractal networks for a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrate. The silver fractal networks are of high SERS enhancement factor, large dynamical range. The observed SERS efficiency can be explained in terms of strongly localized plasmon modes relative to the single particle plasmon resonance.

Abstract:Two dimensional nanostructures film silver nanoparticles(NPs) formed through self-assembly method exhibit an unique optical property,including extraordinarily offering large amounts of "hot spots",which make them ideal candidate of surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate.In this paper,large-area Ag films composed of close-packed NPs were fabricated by taking advantage of self-assemble at heptanes/water interface.Using Rhodamine 6G(R6G) as probing molecules,the SERS characteristic of the films composed of silver NPs with variant sizes was exploited.It is found that films with Ag size of 160 nm exhibited optimal enhancement effect.Moreover,the films made of closely-packed NPs unambiguously showed much enhancement than the films composed of sparse ones by simply dropping Ag sols.

Abstract:Silver nano-shells (SNSs) were synthesized via a two-step seeds-mediated method. Polymer cores were composed of ultrafine gold nanoparticles (NPs) modified chitosan–poly(acrylic acid) nanoparticles (CS–PAA NPs). Then, deposition of silver upon gold nucleus leads to the seed enlargement and finally forms silver shell on the surface of CS–PAA NPs to get SNSs. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed SNSs had a discrete silver shell plus some pores and gaps, which could acted as “hot spots” and provided the great potential of these SNSs to be used as SERS substrates with wavelength ranging from visible to infrared region (700–1000nm) by tuning shell coverage of silver. SERS experiments with dibenzyl disulphide (DBDS) as the indicator showed that the resulting SNSs allowed the production of highly consistent enhancement of the Raman signals down to nM concentrations of DBDS. Considering the excellent biocompatibility of polymer core and their small size, these SNSs are highly desirable candidates as the enhancers for high performance SERS analysis and as SERS optical labels in biomedical imaging.

Abstract:The active substrates with rings of silver nanoparticles arising by drying of sessile colloid drops were used for realization of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The colloids have been produced by laser ablation in water using pulse Yb fiber laser. The droplets with diameter down to 10 μm were dispensed by electrohydrodynamic technique by means of pyroelectric field produced by lithium tantalate plate. The optimal spatial distribution of hotspots was obtained for substrate covered by the micron-size rings of silver nanoparticles. The method was applied for various organic molecules rhodamine 6G, thymine, and RNA with enhancement factor up to 105.

Abstract:Active surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, 3D nano-arrays of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs), were prepared using a photochemical approach and an electrophoresis deposition technique with the formation mechanism addressed. The GQDs (ca. 6nm average) fit into the inter-particle gaps between Ag NPs, as verified by their scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. This deliberately designed 3D assembly of Ag NPs and GQDs could promote the synergistic effects of both components to further enhance the SERS performances according to both electromagnetic mechanism and chemical mechanism. Preliminary experiments show that the 3D substrates exhibited strong SERS signals comparing with bare Si substrates. This work provides a promising way for 3D SERS substrates.

Abstract:We have prepared graphene-veiled-nanoparticle hybrids by depositing a bilayer graphene film on silver nanoparticles with large particle sizes, ∼200 nm. The hybrids possess good thermal stability and exhibit great surface-enhanced Raman scattering with enhancement factors of 49- and 21-fold for the G and 2D peaks, respectively. The electrical and optical absorption measurements revealed the occurrence of charge transfer and strong interactions between the silver nanoparticles and graphene. Accordingly, a possible mechanism of Raman enhancement is proposed for the present hybrids. This work demonstrates a well-designed way to improve surface-enhanced Raman scattering in graphene-based materials.

Abstract:In this work, silver-carbon composite semitransparent hollow spheres (Ag/HCSs) have been successfully synthesized via Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) with trioctylamine (TOA) as a stabilizer and soft template. Furthermore, silver-carbon composites with core-shell structure (Ag@CSs) and carbon films loaded with silver nanoparticles composites with lamellar structure (Ag/CFs) were prepared by adjusting the amount of TOA. The Ag/HCSs were composed of a matrix of ultrathin translucent hydrothermal hollow carbon microspheres with Ag nanoclusters embedded, and numbers of Ag@CSs inside and outside of the hollow carbon microspheres. We further investigated the growth mechanism and morphology evolution. On the basis of the properties of Ag and HCSs, explored the application of the Ag/HCSs for Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). SERS activity was investigated using Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and Crystal violet (CV) as the SERS probe molecules. Ag/HCSs exhibit the best SERS performance among three products. The semitranslucent carbon shell, localized surface plasmon resonances of AgNPs and the effect of charge transfer arising from oxygen-containing moieties make the Ag/HCSs to exhibit good SERS performance, which may give a little inspiration to prepare novel SERS substrates.

Abstract:We introduce a platform, comprised of silver nanoparticle decorated silica nanowires (SiONWs) dispersed on fused quartz substrates, for high sensitivity surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements using both frontal (through the analytes) and back-face (through the transparent substrate) excitation. Quasi-quantitative SERS performances on the specialized substrate, vis-à-vis a silver deposited bare fused quartz plate, showed: (i) the suitability of the Ag modified SiONW substrate for frontal as well as back-face excitation; (ii) a wider detection range with high sensitivity to Rhodamine 6G; and (iii) good underwater metal-oxide adhesion of the specialized substrates. Capable of surviving ultrasonic cleaning, the substrate introduced is one of the few reusable low-cost Ag-based nanostructured SERS substrates, requiring only a simple silver reload process (the silver mirror reaction).

Abstract:Highly effective surface-enhanced Raman substrates with shape-diversified silver nanostructures on Al foil (AlF) were fabricated by galvanic replacement reaction in micellar template which is easy to control, simple and cost-effective. Due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of silver nanostructures, the substrates were used as surface enhanced Raman substrates. The shape-diversified silver nanostructures on AlF exhibited stronger surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effects compared with flowerlike Ag nanostructures on ITO glass substrate fabricated by electrodeposition in micellar template. The maximum Raman enhancement factor of 109 fold was obtained, which is 236 times larger than the flowerlike silver nanostructures on ITO glass substrate. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show that the size and shape of the nanostructures and surface morphology make a valuable contribution to SERS. Raman enhancement experiments of three Raman probes were studied, which shows that different vibrational modes of Raman probe affect SERS effect. The fabricated shape-diversified silver nanostructures on AlF fabricated by galvanic replacement reaction in micellar template are cheap, controllable and simple. It could be potentially useful in SERS field such as imaging applications and highly sensitive molecule detecting.

Abstract:Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as both a modifier and reductant to in situ deposit silver nanoparticles (denoted Ag NPs) on the surface of silica nanospheres (nanosilica or nano-SiO2), affording Ag-decorated nanosilica (denoted SiO2@Ag). The as-obtained SiO2@Ag composite can form silver nanoparticle-decorated silica nanosphere arrays (denoted SiO2@Ag arrays) via evaporation-induced self-assembly. The as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array were used as the SERS substrates to measure the Raman signals of the dilute solutions of rhodamine 6G (denoted R6G), an organic dye that is a potential pollutant to the environment. The findings indicate that the as-prepared SiO2@Ag composite and SiO2@Ag array as potential SERS substrates simultaneously exhibit a high degree of metal coverage and small size of Ag NPs as well as good stability and abundant "hot spots", which contributes to their desired Raman enhancement capacities. For the detection of trace R6G, they provide a limit of detection of as low as 10-9-10-11 M as well as good reproducibility, showing promising potential for monitoring chemical and biological molecules.
