Abstract:A simple method was demonstrated to metallize silicon (Si) nanowire (NW)just by dipping it in to an aqueous deposition solution for several minutes. During the metallization process, meta I ions were reduced and deposited on the top of the Si NW (where surface Si was oxidized). The surface silicon oxide was simultaneously dissolved and removed by hydrogen fluoride (HF), so that the deposition reaction was sustainable and controllable. The deposited silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) uniformly self-assembled along the Si NW and developed into a metal covering with the NW as its core. Not only Ag+ but also Cu2+, Pd2+, Co3+, Au3+, and Pt4+ were deposited to metallize the Si NW using the simplified metallization process. Applications of the new nanocomposite materials were also explored. When the resulting Ag NP/Si NW was tested as a surface-enhanced raman scattering (SERS) substrate, an extremely strong signal was observed and a detection limit of similar to 600 molecules or 200-300 Ag NPs per laser spot was reached. The significantly enhanced SERS effect appears to be associated with the close packing of the neighboring NPs that self-assemble along the highly curved NW.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering（SERS）is an efficient technique to detect low concentration molecules.In this work,periodical silicon nanowires（Si NWs）integrated with metal-insulator-metal（MIM）layers are employed as SERS substrates.Laser interference lithography（LIL）combined with reactive ion etching（RIE）is used to fabricate large-area periodic nanostructures,followed by decorating the MIM layers.Compared to MIM disks array on Si surface,the SERS enhancement factor（EF）of the MIM structures on the Si NWs array can be increased up to 5 times,which is attributed to the enhanced electric field at the boundary of the MIM disks.Furthermore,high density of nanoparticles and nanogaps serving as hot spots on sidewall surfaces also contribute to the enhanced SERS signals.Via changing the thickness of the insulator layer,the plasmonic resonance can be tuned,which provides a new localized surface plasmon resonance（LSPR）characteristic for SERS applications.

Abstract:Silver-coated silicon nanowire (SiNW) arrays were prepared utilizing galvanic displacement processes consisting of three steps: galvanic displacement deposition of silver particles using a HF–AgNO3 or NH4F–AgNO3 aqueous solution; formation of SiNW arrays by a silver-assisted chemical etching process conducted in the HF–H2O2 aqueous solution; deposition of silver particles on the SiNW arrays from the NH4F–AgNO3 aqueous solution. The effects of the morphology of pre-deposited silver particles and deposition solution on the formation of silver-coated SiNW arrays were discussed. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performances have been studied using Rhodamine 6G (R6G) probe molecules on the silver-coated SiNW substrates.

Abstract:We introduce a platform, comprised of silver nanoparticle decorated silica nanowires (SiONWs) dispersed on fused quartz substrates, for high sensitivity surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements using both frontal (through the analytes) and back-face (through the transparent substrate) excitation. Quasi-quantitative SERS performances on the specialized substrate, vis-à-vis a silver deposited bare fused quartz plate, showed: (i) the suitability of the Ag modified SiONW substrate for frontal as well as back-face excitation; (ii) a wider detection range with high sensitivity to Rhodamine 6G; and (iii) good underwater metal-oxide adhesion of the specialized substrates. Capable of surviving ultrasonic cleaning, the substrate introduced is one of the few reusable low-cost Ag-based nanostructured SERS substrates, requiring only a simple silver reload process (the silver mirror reaction).

Abstract:Active surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, 3D nano-arrays of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs), were prepared using a photochemical approach and an electrophoresis deposition technique with the formation mechanism addressed. The GQDs (ca. 6nm average) fit into the inter-particle gaps between Ag NPs, as verified by their scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. This deliberately designed 3D assembly of Ag NPs and GQDs could promote the synergistic effects of both components to further enhance the SERS performances according to both electromagnetic mechanism and chemical mechanism. Preliminary experiments show that the 3D substrates exhibited strong SERS signals comparing with bare Si substrates. This work provides a promising way for 3D SERS substrates.
Improvement of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering by Dipolar Resonance Mode of Silver Half-Shell Array

Abstract:In this paper, we study the tuning of the optical responses and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the silver nanostructure film corrugated with a two-dimensional (2D) colloidal crystal. Using rhodamine 6G as the probe molecules, we show that the SERS signal can be efficiently improved by controlling the silver layer thickness or the microsphere size. Under the excitation of a laser with 514 nm in wavelength, the largest spatially average enhancement factor of SERS signal is on the order of ~3 × 107 when the silver nanostructure is patterned by sputtering ~100-nm-thick silver layer onto 2D colloidal microspheres of 360 nm in diameter. We further demonstrate that the Raman intensity is proportional to the product of the absorptances of the as-prepared metallic SERS substrates at excitation and Stokes wavelengths. Numerical simulations revealed that this huge enhancement of Raman signal is attributed to the excitation of a dipolar plasmon resonance of the silver nanostructure.

Abstract:Silver nanocrystals were fabricated via a conventional hydro-thermal method, which is based on a general phase transfer and separation mechanism occurring at the interfaces of the liquid, solid, and solution phases present during the synthesis. A convenient nanotechnique to assemble silver nanocrystals with precise control of gaps in the sub-10 nm regime on Si wafer is demonstrated for a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active coating. The silver nanocrystal coating is of high SERS enhancement factor and large dynamical range. The observed SERS efficiency can be explained in terms of interparticle-coupling- induced Raman enhancement.

Abstract:We introduce a simple and cost-effective approach for fabrication of effective surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. It is shown that the as-fabricated substrates show excellent SERS effects in various probe molecules with high sensitivity, that is, picomolar level detection, and also good reliability. With a SERS enhancement factor beyond 108 and excellent reproducibility (deviation less than 5%) of signal intensity, the fabrication of the SERS substrate is realized on a four-inch wafer and proven to be effective in pesticide residue detection. The SERS substrate is realized first through the fabrication of quasi-periodic nanostructured silicon with dimension features in tens of nanometers using superaligned carbon nanotubes networks as an etching mask, after which a large amount of hot spots with nanometer gaps are formed through deposition of a gold film. With rigorous nanostructure design, the enhanced performance of electromagnetic field distribution for nanostructures is optimized. With the advantage of cost-effective large-area preparation, it is believed that the as-fabricated SERS substrate could be used in a wide variety of actual applications where detection of trace amounts is necessary.

Abstract:Fabrication of gold coated silicon nanowires (AuSiNW) substrate is introduced in detail and A hybrid substrate is designed for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The SERS behaviors are discussed and compared by the detection of 4, 4’-Bipyridine. Gold nanoparicles is modified on the surface of AuSiNW to form the “hot gap”. Molecules captured in these “hot gap” can generate huge Raman signal. Double-fold enhancement of SERS signal has been achieved comparing with AuSiNW. The as-fabricated hybrid substrate exhibit high SERS sensitivity, long-term stability, and consistent reproducibility, highly potential for realizing a rapid, cost-effective, and label-free SERS-based biosensor.

Abstract:Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction reveal that four different types of crystalline silver nanostructures including nanoparticles, nanowires, nanocubes, and bipyramids are synthesized by a solvothermal method by reducing silver nitrate with ethylene glycol using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as an adsorption agent and adding different quantities of sodium chloride to the solution. These nanostructures which exhibit different surface plasma resonance properties in the ultraviolet–visible region are shown to be good surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates using rhodamine 6G molecules. Our results demonstrate that the silver nanocubes, bipyramids with sharp corners and edges, and aggregated silver nanoparticles possess better SERS properties than the silver nanowires, indicating that they can serve as high-sensitivity substrates in SERS-based measurements.

Abstract:The silicon nanowire arrays and their composite with gold nanoparticles have been fabricated via wet etching method. FESEM and EDAX images elucidated that gold nanoparticles had been attached on the silicon nanowires. This hybrid nanowire arrays were further applied to obtain the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of rhodamine 6G (MG). The absolute enhancement factor (EF) has also been approximately calculated as 1.54 x 10(4). It indicated that the silicon nanowires decorated with gold nanoparticles could be used as effective SERS substrate to detect biologic molecules such as adenine molecule, thrombin and BSA.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection technique has gained much attention as a powerful analytical tool in these years. Nevertheless, the attention was mainly focused on the efficient scattering platform by structuring metals themselves, leading to the more complex platforms and simultaneous the higher cost. Herein, a new and simple strategy to prepare large-area, low-cost, high-performance SERS substrate is introduced. Ultra-thin semiconductor silicon (Si) film is used as the functional layer for the metallic nano-particles based meta-surface. During the SERS sensing process, the emergence of Si layer is observed to provide three key contributions: 1) to produce a maximal enhancement factor (EF) ~470% than that of the bare meta-surface, 2) to keep a higher spectral stability for the Raman signal, 3) to physically interdict the contact between the metal and the molecule. Moreover, the Si film's thickness is down to the scale close to electron's Bohr radius, indicating efficient electronic oscillations for the semiconductor material under electromagnetic excitation. The charge transfer behaviors between the molecules and the Si layer and metal nano-particles can also emerge. These findings could pave new insights on the surface-enhanced spectroscopy and hold applications on the high-performance, large-area, low-cost SERS sensing.

Abstract:Highly effective surface-enhanced Raman substrates with shape-diversified silver nanostructures on Al foil (AlF) were fabricated by galvanic replacement reaction in micellar template which is easy to control, simple and cost-effective. Due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of silver nanostructures, the substrates were used as surface enhanced Raman substrates. The shape-diversified silver nanostructures on AlF exhibited stronger surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effects compared with flowerlike Ag nanostructures on ITO glass substrate fabricated by electrodeposition in micellar template. The maximum Raman enhancement factor of 109 fold was obtained, which is 236 times larger than the flowerlike silver nanostructures on ITO glass substrate. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show that the size and shape of the nanostructures and surface morphology make a valuable contribution to SERS. Raman enhancement experiments of three Raman probes were studied, which shows that different vibrational modes of Raman probe affect SERS effect. The fabricated shape-diversified silver nanostructures on AlF fabricated by galvanic replacement reaction in micellar template are cheap, controllable and simple. It could be potentially useful in SERS field such as imaging applications and highly sensitive molecule detecting.

Abstract:A quasi-periodic array of 3D gold-nanoparticle-capped SiO2 microspheres (Au@SiO2) was designed and prepared with a facile approach to enhance the Raman signal intensity of adsorbed biomolecules. Through adjusting the thickness and annealing of Au thin films initially deposited on arrays of self-assembled SiO2 microspheres, we were able to control the diameter of Au nanoparticles and their interparticle spacing to produce two types of plasmonic near-field hot spots, locating at the gaps of such densely arranged Au nanoparticles on individual SiO2 microspheres and in the gap regions of neighboring SiO2 microspheres, respectively. Such double near-field enhancement mechanism leads to a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement factor up to 3×106 for Rhodamine 6G molecules. The SERS signal intensity was highly uniform with a relative standard deviation of 4.5%. This 3D SERS substrate has significant potential for various applications in the field of SERS detection of analytes and wearable biosensing.

Abstract:Large-area gold and silver nanoparticles inside periodical silicon microhole arrays were prepared via simple electrodeposition. Such metal nanoparticles within Si microholes showed a strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect, which enabled the detection of rhodamine at 10(-8) M and 10(-9) M on substrates of AuNPs and AgNPs, respectively. The SERS activity of the substrates depended on the metal particle morphology. Microfabrication combined with electrodeposition appears to be a viable approach for preparing reproducible SERS Substrates for sensitive Raman detection.

Abstract:Despite the great potential of the application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), the difficulty in fabricating suitable SERS substrates is still a challenge. Based on the self-assembly of silica nanoparticles, the image shows a highly ordered, 3D petallike arrayed structure that serves as a promising SERS substrate because of both its high reproducibility and enormous SERS enhancement. Such a novel structure is easily achieved by anisotropically etching a self-assembled bilayer of silica nanoparticles followed by metal deposition. The spatially average SERS enhancement factor is on the order of 5×107, and the local enhancement factor is much higher; both factors can be improved further by optimizing parameters. Abstract:This paper presents a compact novel CPW-fed reconfigurable antenna for two different applications. This Antenna satisfies the licensed frequency band for RFID and C-Band having return loss lower than −10 dB. The antenna is designed on a substrate with dielectric constant εr=4.4. With two different ON and OFF states the antenna can be used for different applications. The effects of shape, length, size, and location of feeding point, substrate and their thickness have been evaluated. And obtained 2D radiation patterns with elevation, VSWR, Return loss, gain and antenna efficiency. The simulation results of this antenna are analyzed by using Method of Moment (MoM) from IE3D software.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an important sustainable technique because of its ability to detect trace-level analytes including pesticides, heavy metals, explosives, proteins, pathogens, and other chemical and biological contaminants. In this paper, we report a facile approach to highly sensitive SERS substrates by combining hierarchically patterned micro- and nanostructures with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) adsorbed on poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) surface. The patterned structures were fabricated using breath figures as dynamic templates in which polar block enriches at the rim of the pores. This characteristic of the breath figure method makes it possible to employ a simple coating technique to construct substrates decorated with Ag NPs, which have a diameter mostly ranging from 18 to 30 nm. Results indicate that the hierarchically ordered substrates show enhancement factors as high as 4 X 10(8). It is also found that the enhancement factors are concentration-dependent, relying on the ratio of the number of analytes to Ag NPs. Moreover, the prominent enhancement at Raman shift of similar to 614 cm(-1) has been observed, which will be useful in the detection of analytes such as some kinds of pesticides and viruses with characteristic peaks in this Raman shift range (e.g., adenovirus). This proposed approach provides an effective, reproducible, electroless, and facile method for preparing high-quality SERS substrates.

Abstract:A simple method for fabricating SERS-active substrates with colloidal gold nanoparticles is reported. Spontaneous adsorption of HSCH2CH2NH2 on Au-evaporated glass led to a self-assembled monolayer with an amino-terminated surface, on which mono-dispersed colloidal Au nanoparticles were assembled into a two-dimensional array. Thus-prepared substrates were shown to be SERS-active, evidenced by the enhanced Raman scattering from BPE and an azobenzene derivative. The SERS enhancement factor was calculated to be 3×103. Raman mapping and AFM imaging disclosed the good uniformity of the particle distribution on the surface on micrometer scale.

Abstract:Based on diffusion-limited aggregation process, a convenient nanotechnique is demonstrated to obtain large silver fractal networks for a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrate. The silver fractal networks are of high SERS enhancement factor, large dynamical range. The observed SERS efficiency can be explained in terms of strongly localized plasmon modes relative to the single particle plasmon resonance.
