Abstract:The dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural is the research hotspot of the compre-hensive utilization of biomass resources. Using AlCl3 as the catalyst,the influence of reaction conditions on the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural,especially the addition of different inorganic acids on the catalytic performance of AlCl3 was investigated. Using inorganic acid and AlCl3 as the co-catalyst, the effects of different solvents(1,4-dioxane,N,N-dimethylformamide,2-dimethyl sulfoxide),reaction temperature and the mass ratio of sulphuric acid to phosphoric acid(1: 2、2: 3、3: 2、2: 1)were tested. The results showed that 5-hydroxymethylfurfural yield of 92. 1% was attained under the condition as follows:N,N-dimethylformamide as the solvent,AlCl3 dosage 7. 5 mmol,sulphuric acid concentration 20 mmol·L -1 , phosphoric acid concentration 30 mmol·L - 1 and reaction temperature 120 ℃.

Abstract:Conversion of biorenewable feedstocks into transportation fuels or chemicals likely necessitates the development of novel heterogeneous catalysts with good hydrothermal stability, due to the nature of highly oxygenated biomass compounds and the prevalence of water as a processing solvent. The use of carbon-based materials, derived from sugars as catalyst precursors, can achieve hydrothermal stability while simultaneously realizing the goal of sustainability. In this work, the simultaneous pyrolysis of glucose and taurine in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), to obtain versatile solid acids, has been demonstrated. Structural and textural properties of the catalysts have been characterized by TEM, TGA, and XPS. Additionally, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy has been exploited to elucidate the chemical nature of carbon species deposited on the surface of MWCNTs. Al(OTf)(3), a model Lewis acidic metal salt, has been successfully supported on sulfonic groups tethered to MWCNTs. This catalyst has been tested for C-6 sugar dehydration for the production of HMF in a tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water solvent system with good recyclability.

Abstract:The conversion of sugars to chemicals in aqueous-phase is especially important for the utilization of biomass. In current work, zirconium phosphate obtained by hydrothermal methods using organic amines as templates has been examined as a solid catalyst for the dehydration reaction of xylose to furfural in aqueous-phase. The use of dodecylamine and hexadecylamine in the synthesis process results in mesoporous zirconium phosphate with uniform pore width of similar to 2 nm and in morphology of nanoaggregates, which is characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, N-2 isothermal sorption, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, FT-IR, and P-31 MAS NMR spectroscopy. When used as a catalyst for xylose dehydration to furfural in aqueous-phase, the mesoporous zirconium phosphate presents excellent catalytic performance with high conversions up to 96% and high furfural yields up to 52% in a short time of reaction. Moreover, the catalyst is easily regenerated by thermal treatment in air and shows quite stable activity. The open structure with numerous active sites of the Bronsted/Lewis acid sites is responsible for the high catalytic efficiency of mesoporous zirconium phosphate.

Abstract:A series of mesoporous Ta and Ta-W oxides have been prepared and employed as solid acid catalysts for the dehydration of fructose and glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Solid state 31P MAS NMR spectroscopic results using trimethylphosphine (TMP) as a probe molecule show that the acid strength and the ratio of Brönsted to Lewis acid sites increase gradually with the addition of tungsten in tantalum oxide. It is found that high sugar conversion and HMF selectivity are achieved over catalyst with relatively high ratios of Brönsted to Lewis acid sites. Unexpected stoichiometric excess of formic acid relative to levulinic acid can be observed mainly because of direct decomposition of fructose over Lewis acid sites. The addition of 2-butanol leads to the increase of sugars conversion and the HMF selectivity, especially for the catalyst with high ratio of Brönsted to Lewis acid sites. Among them, Ta7W3 oxide catalyst shows 54% HMF selectivity and good reusability with the addition of 2-butanol by extracting HMF from aqueous phase and removing humins deposed on the surface of the catalyst.

Abstract:The conversion of biomass-derived monosaccharides to value-added platform compounds, regarded as the alternative biofuels precursors, has attracted increasing attention. This work provides a novel approach on developing efficient and recyclable catalyst for biorefining. Herein, a titania-supported tungstophosphoric acid (TPA-TiO2) nanocomposite catalyst with advantages in acidity flexibility and catalytic stability was proposed for the efficient dehydration of xylose to furfural. The loading of the active component of TPA played an important role in the acidity and Lewis/Bronsted acids distribution of the catalyst. The structure characterization of the catalyst showed that the TPA particles were distributed well in TiO2 support. After the optimization of catalytic reaction conditions, the xylose conversion could approach to 96.12% while the furfural yield of 76.71% was obtained at 190 degrees C for 60 min catalyzed by TiO2-TPA-3 in a methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK)-water biphasic solvent system. It was still about 80% of the initial yield after the fifth recycling of the TiO(2-)supported heteropolyacids catalyst. Furthermore, the reaction kinetics of xylose dehydration to furfural was investigated. The catalytic system in this work had a lower activation energy for xylose dehydration, and the decrease in furfural yield was mainly caused by the side reaction of furfural with intermediates. This work provides a novel approach on developing efficient and recyclable catalyst for biorefining.

Abstract:The tubular solid acid catalyst with composite acidic sites was prepared.The designed catalyst was catalytic for fructose, glucose, potato starch, cellulose.The catalyst has the highest 5-HMF yield of 75.47% and selectivity of 88.55% when catalyzing fructose.The catalyst can maintain high performance for more than 5 cycles and can be regenerated easily.The water/ethyl acetate system used in this study is suitable for the purification and separation of 5-HMF, and obtained 5-HMF crystals with a purity of 95.34%.In order to replace petrochemicals, there is an increasing demand for environmentally friendly new biochemicals, and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural is one such product.In this paper, sulfonated carbon-titanium dioxide composite nanofiber tube catalyst was prepared by electrospinning and used for the dehydration of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in aqueous/ethyl acetate biphasic solution. The catalyst showed good activity in preparing of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using fructose and glucose as raw materials, with yields of 75.47% and 42.44% of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. In addition, the catalyst still had catalytic effect when starch and cellulose as the reactants.Results showed that the catalytic ability of the catalyst was found to be significantly better than that of a single sulfonated carbon or titanium dioxide, at the same time, the catalyst can be used multiple times and is easy to regenerate. Abstract:Sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous SBA-15 materials were prepared using the co-condensation and grafting methods, respectively, and their catalytic performance in the dehydration of xylose to furfural was examined. SBA-15-SO3H(C) prepared by the co-condensation method showed 92-95% xylose conversion and 74% furfural selectivity, and 68-70% furfural yield under the given reaction conditions. The deactivation and regeneration of the SBA-15-SO3H(C) catalyst for the dehydration of xylose was also investigated. The results indicate that the used and regeneration catalysts retained the SBA-15 mesoporous structure, and the S content of SBA-15-SO3H(C) almost did not change. The deactivation of the catalysts is proposed to be associated with the accumulation of byproducts, which is caused by the loss reaction of furfural. After regeneration by H2O2, the catalytic activity of the catalyst almost recovered.

Abstract:By using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template, a series of mesoporous niobium phosphates were synthesized at different pH values in an aqueous solution. Techniques such as small-angle X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N-2 sorption technique were employed to characterize the mesoporous structures of thus-synthesized materials, EDAX to detect the composition, FTIR and solid state P-31 MAS NMR to investigate the framework information, while their acidic properties were analyzed using NH3-TPD and pyridine-FTIR. Samples prepared at neutral to acidic conditions exhibited high surface area (213-297 m(2) g(-1)), narrow pore size distribution (3-4 nm) and a great number of strong Lewis and Bronsted acid sites. These materials exhibited excellent activity in the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in water. The maximum HMF yield reached 45% under 130 degrees C with a reaction time of 0.5 h and the yield slightly decreased to 32% after five cycles and the five-cycled catalyst can be almost regenerated by calcination at 500 degrees C with the yield of 40%. The excellent catalytic activity obtained in the aqueous phase can be attributed to its high acid site density and the tolerance to water.

Abstract:In this study, a mesoporous Nb-W oxide solid acid catalyst was synthesized and characterized in detail by TEM, N 2 physisorption , and Py-FTIR. Effects of the calcination temperature on the pore structure and acid properties were investigated. The results showed that increasing calcination temperature from 400 °C to 600 °C remarkably affected the characteristics of mesoporous Nb-W oxides, with a decrease in specific surface area, pore volume, and acid amount, but an increase in pore size from 5.1 nm to 10.4 nm. Furthermore, a notable decrease was found in both the fructose conversion and HMF yield in the dehydration of fructose to HMF over Nb-W oxides when increasing the calcination temperature, and the catalyst could keep high catalytic activity and selectivity after recycling 4 times. Solvents also played a key role in the fructose dehydration to HMF over the Nb-W oxides, and DMSO was the optimized solvent. 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR experiments revealed that the key intermediate, 4-hydroxy-5-hydroxymethyl-4,5-dihydrofuran-2-carbaldehyde, could generate in DMSO but not in other solvents including NMP, DMF , DMAC, and EG.

Abstract:Aiming to develop an ecologically and economically viable catalytic pathway, dehydration of D-xylose and hemicelluloses to furfural was performed using tin-loaded sulfonated diatomite (SO4 2−/Sn-DM) as solid acid catalyst in mild reaction system. The solid acid was characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD, ICP, py-IR and NH3-TPD. Results indicated the solid acid was rich in Lewis and Brønsted acidities that mainly contain Sn4+ and sulfonic group respectively, which was distributing uniformly on the surface of modified DM. Compared with the pure water solution, furfural catalyzed in saturated NaCl aqueous-toluene biphasic system showed better performance. The effect of solvent assistant, time and temperature of the catalytic process were optimized. A maximized furfural yield of 80.97% and 84.39% were obtained using xylose and water-soluble hemicelluloses as the substrate respectively. The solid acid catalyst also showed good stability after 5 cycles.

Abstract:The solid acid catalyst packing AAO/SBA-15-SO3H was prepared by the co-condensation and grafting method with porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) as support. FT-IR, SEM and TEM were applied to characterize the prepared samples. Results showed that catalysts prepared by two methods both contained active centers, and SBA-15 nanorod arrays grow inside a porous alumina membrane AAO and are perpendicular to the substrate. Their catalytic performances were tested for dehydration of xylose to furfural. The conversion of xylose and selectivity of furfural were 90% and 74% on the AAO/SBA-15-SO3H(C) catalyst prepared by the co-condensation method, respectively. The deactivation and regeneration of the AAO/SBA-15-SO3H(C) catalyst for the dehydration of xylose were also investigated, the activity of catalyst treated by 30wt.% H2O2 almost was recovered.

Abstract:An efficient and selective process for the conversion of carbohydrates to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was applied over a novel phosphated TiO2-SiO2 (P-TiO2-SiO2) catalyst. The catalyst, synthesized by a facile sol-gel technique, was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 sorption, NH3 temperature-programmed-desorption, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) study of the pyridine adsorbed. The highest HMF yield of 63.0 mol% was achieved at 170 °C for 90 min over P-TiO2-SiO2 catalyst in a tetrahydrofuran (THF)/H2O-NaCl system. The P-TiO2-SiO2 catalyst showed a predominant catalytic performance in the synthesis of HMF, a result of its moderate acid density and suitable Bronsted/Lewis (B/L) acid ratio. Additionally, the catalyst was shown to be efficient in the conversion of more complex cellulose with the high HMF yield of 56.0 mol%. More importantly, this mesoporous catalyst exhibited high stability and recyclability, making it a promising choice for the future production of HMF.
DFT and dynamic analysis of glucose alcoholysis conversion to 5-ethoxymethylfurfural and ethyl levulinate

Abstract:An effective catalytic strategy for the conversion of glucose to 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) catalyzed by ultrastable Y zeolite (USY) in a co-solvent system was developed. Effects of co-solvent and reaction conditions were first investigated. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) with low dipolarity/polarizability (π*) was screened as the appropriate co-solvent, and a higher EMF yield of 41.46% was obtained as the ratio of ethanol to THF was 7:3. The macroscopic reaction kinetic study indicated that THF can protect EMF from easy degradation to EL. Moreover, the reusability and the characterization of USY verified the feasibility of USY as an efficient solid acid catalyst. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the catalytic mechanism and solvent effect at the molecular scale were performed for the first time. The extra-framework aluminum species (EFAL), in which Al3+ played an essential role in the reaction as the preferred EFAL species, and THF can reduce the energy barrier of USY-catalyzed glucose isomerization. Meanwhile, the inhibitory effect of THF on EMF alcoholysis was explored via the frontier molecular orbital theory. The results showed that THF increased the LUMO energy of EMF compared with ethanol and γ-valerolactone, which decreased its susceptibility to nucleophilic attack and reduced the adverse alcoholysis of EMF and humins formation. This study provided an enlightening reference for the efficient synthesis of EMF from carbohydrates catalyzed by solid acid catalyst under solvent effect.

Abstract:A series of tantalum oxide samples (Ta2O5-T) were prepared by varying the calcination temperature T in the range of 110–700 °C of a highly hydrated precursor (Ta2O5·2.1H2O), which was obtained from a hetero-phase reaction between tantalum pentachloride and aqueous ammonia. These Ta2O5-T samples were characterized by TG/DTA, XPS, nitrogen adsorption, XRD, and UV-Raman, and were employed to catalyze the gas-phase dehydration of glycerol (GL) to produce acrolein (AC) at around 315 °C. n-Butylamine titration using Hammett indicators, NH3- and CO2-TPD, and IR of adsorbed pyridine were measured to assess the surface acid–base properties of the catalysts. The Ta2O5-350 catalyst, which was in a hydrated amorphous state and showed no basicity but a maximum strong acidity at −8.2 < H0 ≤ −3.0 (H0 being the Hammett acidity function) prior to the reaction, was identified among all Ta2O5-T samples as the best performing catalyst in terms of AC selectivity and GL consumption rate. The AC selectivity increased with increasing the fractional strong acidity at −8.2 < H0 ≤ −3.0 but the catalytic GL consumption rate increased with increasing the number of strong acid sites on the catalyst prior to the reaction. The partly (Ta2O5-600) and fully (Ta2O5-700) crystallized samples showed almost no strong acidity but they exhibited some basicity in the CO2-TPD experiments; their much lower AC selectivity (<40 mol%) as compared with that on Ta2O5-350 (75 mol%) indicated that surface basicity was detrimental to the AC selectivity. The best performing Ta2O5-350 catalyst also showed after activation in the initial hours of the reaction a good catalytic stability in long term reactions, regardless of the reaction temperature (305–340 °C) and GHSVGL (80–400 h−1).

Abstract:The 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile platform molecule that could be transformed into many fine chemicals. This compound is usually obtained by dehydration of fructose or glucose, but use of sucrose as substrate often demands high temperature and shows poor yield, deserving optimization. In this work, a series of titanium–aluminum binary oxides are prepared over long-axis SBA-15 through co-precipitation of metal salts, and metal ratio of solid product could be controlled by changing metal content of preparative solution. Catalysis reveals solvent, temperature, UV irradiation, and surface composition of catalyst show important influences on output, while catalyst having equimolar titanium and aluminum shows the most promising activity. Additionally, a catalytic mechanism is proposed based on catalyst characterization, catalytic results and calculations. This work would contribute to the synthesis of new oxide catalyst, as well as to utilization of biomass.

Abstract:Herein, hydrated WO3 was synthesized by hydrothermal method, and the relationship between its structure and acidity was explored. The numbers of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) and Lewis acid sites (LAS) can be modulated by adjusting the lattice water content of WO3·nH2O. Mechanism studies shown that the density of BAS and diffusion effect have a synergistic effect on the activity of dehydration reaction. The optimized WO3·0.5H2O catalyst in the presence of both high BAS density and high BAS accessibility afforded 73% 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) yield, and almost no deactivation appeared after five cycles. Nearly twice higher turnover frequency (TOF) and 50% higher HMF selectivity were observed in comparison to anhydrous WO3.

Abstract:Furfural, a valuable platform chemical that has the potential to replace a variety of oil/coal/gas derived materials and chemical products, is produced by the dehydration of d-xylose, which in turn is obtained from lignocellulosic biomass. Herein, the conversion of xylose in the presence of nanocrystalline zeolite beta in the H+-form, using water as solvent, was investigated. Detailed batch kinetic studies and products identifications techniques (1H, 13C NMR and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ToFMS)) provided mechanistic insights into the overall reaction process. The conversion of xylose to furfural is accompanied by several side reactions, forming complex reaction mixtures. A pseudo-homogeneous kinetic model was proposed that fitted quite well the experimental data.
