Abstract:Conversion of biorenewable feedstocks into transportation fuels or chemicals likely necessitates the development of novel heterogeneous catalysts with good hydrothermal stability, due to the nature of highly oxygenated biomass compounds and the prevalence of water as a processing solvent. The use of carbon-based materials, derived from sugars as catalyst precursors, can achieve hydrothermal stability while simultaneously realizing the goal of sustainability. In this work, the simultaneous pyrolysis of glucose and taurine in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), to obtain versatile solid acids, has been demonstrated. Structural and textural properties of the catalysts have been characterized by TEM, TGA, and XPS. Additionally, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy has been exploited to elucidate the chemical nature of carbon species deposited on the surface of MWCNTs. Al(OTf)(3), a model Lewis acidic metal salt, has been successfully supported on sulfonic groups tethered to MWCNTs. This catalyst has been tested for C-6 sugar dehydration for the production of HMF in a tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water solvent system with good recyclability.
Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol Without External Hydrogen over N-doped Carbon Confined Co Catalysts

Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.
Efficient catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol in near-critical isopropanol over Cu/MgO-Al2O3 catalyst

Abstract:The transformation of sugars is a sustainable method of production of high value-added chemicals and fuels. Traditional procedures used H2SO4 for sugar dehydration, followed by hydrogenation with fossil-derived hydrogen over noble-metal catalysts, which increased the complexity and cost. In this work, formic acid (FA) served as both acid catalyst for dehydration of xylose and hydrogen donor for hydrogenation of the as-formed furfural (FAL) with N-doped carbon-confined Co (Co–N–C) as a catalyst. A high furfuryl alcohol (FOL) yield of 69.5% was accomplished at 160 °C for 5 h. Kinetic studies showed that the apparent activation energy (Ea) over Co–N–C was calculated to be 98.8 kJ/mol. This catalyst was also capable of the one-pot transformation of xylan to FOL and could be reused five times. It is found that the xylose dehydration could be the rate-determining step and coupling xylose dehydration with FAL hydrogenation could accelerate the xylose transformation and the generation of FOL.

Abstract:The conversion of biomass-derived monosaccharides to value-added platform compounds, regarded as the alternative biofuels precursors, has attracted increasing attention. This work provides a novel approach on developing efficient and recyclable catalyst for biorefining. Herein, a titania-supported tungstophosphoric acid (TPA-TiO2) nanocomposite catalyst with advantages in acidity flexibility and catalytic stability was proposed for the efficient dehydration of xylose to furfural. The loading of the active component of TPA played an important role in the acidity and Lewis/Bronsted acids distribution of the catalyst. The structure characterization of the catalyst showed that the TPA particles were distributed well in TiO2 support. After the optimization of catalytic reaction conditions, the xylose conversion could approach to 96.12% while the furfural yield of 76.71% was obtained at 190 degrees C for 60 min catalyzed by TiO2-TPA-3 in a methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK)-water biphasic solvent system. It was still about 80% of the initial yield after the fifth recycling of the TiO(2-)supported heteropolyacids catalyst. Furthermore, the reaction kinetics of xylose dehydration to furfural was investigated. The catalytic system in this work had a lower activation energy for xylose dehydration, and the decrease in furfural yield was mainly caused by the side reaction of furfural with intermediates. This work provides a novel approach on developing efficient and recyclable catalyst for biorefining.

Abstract:A novel solid acid catalyst was prepared by the copolymerization of p-toluenesulfonic acid and paraformaldehyde and then characterized by FT-IR, TG/DTG, HRTEM and N2-BET. Furfural was successfully produced by the dehydration of xylose and xylan using the novel catalyst in γ-valerolactone. This investigation focused on effects of various reaction conditions including solvent, acid catalyst, reaction temperature, residence time, water concentration, xylose loading and catalyst dosage on the dehydration of xylose to furfural. It was found that the solid catalyst displayed extremely high activity for furfural production. 80.4% furfural yield with 98.8% xylose conversion was achieved at 170°C for 10 min. The catalyst could be recycled at least five times without significant loss of activity. Furthermore, 83.5% furfural yield and 19.5% HMF yield were obtained from raw corn stalk under more severe conditions (190°C for 100 min).

Abstract:Factors influencing dehydration of xylose to furfural,such as catalyst and extract agents,were investigated.Results indicated that high-temperature water may substitute for solid and liquid acid as a catalyst,and ethyl butyrate improved furfural yield for the high distribution coefficient.A furfural yield of 75 % was obtained at200 °C for 3 h in ethyl butyrate/water.The reaction kinetics of xylose dehydration to furfural was investigated and it was found that the reaction order was 0.5,and the activation energy was 68.5 k J/mol.The rate constant k showed a clear agreement with the Arrhenius law from160 to 200 °C.

Abstract:Al-promoted SO₄ ²⁻-/ZrO₂SBA-15 catalysts were prepared and characterized by XRD, BET, ICP and NH₃-TPD techniques. The influence of introducing aluminum on the structure and surface properties of the catalyst and the catalytic activity for dehydration of xylose to furfural has been investigated. The introduction of the Al stabilizes the tetragonal phase of the ZrO₂ and thus increases the number and intensity of acid sites. Based on the characterization of the deactivated catalyst, the accumulation of byproducts is the main reason for the deactivation of the catalyst. Regeneration with H₂O₂ can completely recover the catalytic activity of the deactivated catalyst.

Abstract:The tubular solid acid catalyst with composite acidic sites was prepared.The designed catalyst was catalytic for fructose, glucose, potato starch, cellulose.The catalyst has the highest 5-HMF yield of 75.47% and selectivity of 88.55% when catalyzing fructose.The catalyst can maintain high performance for more than 5 cycles and can be regenerated easily.The water/ethyl acetate system used in this study is suitable for the purification and separation of 5-HMF, and obtained 5-HMF crystals with a purity of 95.34%.In order to replace petrochemicals, there is an increasing demand for environmentally friendly new biochemicals, and 5-hydroxymethyl furfural is one such product.In this paper, sulfonated carbon-titanium dioxide composite nanofiber tube catalyst was prepared by electrospinning and used for the dehydration of carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in aqueous/ethyl acetate biphasic solution. The catalyst showed good activity in preparing of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using fructose and glucose as raw materials, with yields of 75.47% and 42.44% of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. In addition, the catalyst still had catalytic effect when starch and cellulose as the reactants.Results showed that the catalytic ability of the catalyst was found to be significantly better than that of a single sulfonated carbon or titanium dioxide, at the same time, the catalyst can be used multiple times and is easy to regenerate. Abstract:A series of mesoporous Ta and Ta-W oxides have been prepared and employed as solid acid catalysts for the dehydration of fructose and glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Solid state 31P MAS NMR spectroscopic results using trimethylphosphine (TMP) as a probe molecule show that the acid strength and the ratio of Brönsted to Lewis acid sites increase gradually with the addition of tungsten in tantalum oxide. It is found that high sugar conversion and HMF selectivity are achieved over catalyst with relatively high ratios of Brönsted to Lewis acid sites. Unexpected stoichiometric excess of formic acid relative to levulinic acid can be observed mainly because of direct decomposition of fructose over Lewis acid sites. The addition of 2-butanol leads to the increase of sugars conversion and the HMF selectivity, especially for the catalyst with high ratio of Brönsted to Lewis acid sites. Among them, Ta7W3 oxide catalyst shows 54% HMF selectivity and good reusability with the addition of 2-butanol by extracting HMF from aqueous phase and removing humins deposed on the surface of the catalyst.

Abstract:Furfural (FF) is one of the most important platform molecules in the conversion of xylose and hemicellulose. However, the conversions of xylose and hemicellulose to FF with Br & oslash;nsted acid (B-acid) and Lewis acid (L-acid) as catalysts suffer from harsh reaction conditions and low yield, respectively. B-L acid deep eutectic solvents (B-L ADESs), which consist of both B-acid and L-acid, were designed to catalyze the reaction of xylose and hemicellulose to FF under mild conditions. Surprisingly, B-L ADES exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the preparation of FF from xylose and hemicellulose, which exceeds most results reported thus far. Furthermore, it is proved from the kinetics perspective and density functional theory (DFT) calculations that the synergistic action of B-L acids has lower activation energy and higher FF yield than that of B-acid and L-acid alone. The strategy of B-L acid combination provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent design of sustainable catalysts.
One-pot Cascade Conversion of Xylose to Furfuryl Alcohol over a Bifunctional Cu/SBA-15-SO3H Catalyst

Abstract:The conversion of hemicellulose-derived xylose to furfuryl alcohol is a practical procedure for producing value-added chemicals from biomass. In this study, a bifunctional Cu/SBA-15-SO3H catalyst was employed for the one-pot catalytic conversion of xylose to furfuryl alcohol with a yield of up to 62.6% at the optimized conditions of 140 °C, 4 MPa, and for 6 h in a biphasic water/n-butanol solvent. A high reaction temperature resulted in further hydrogenation to 2-methyl furan, while a high hydrogen pressure led to a side hydrogenation reaction to xylitol. The biphasic solvent allowed xylose solvation as well as furfuryl product extraction. The acidic –SO3H sites and Cu sites co-existed, maintained a balance, and cooperatively catalyzed the cascade conversion. Excessive acidic sites and large pores could promote the xylose conversion, although a low furfuryl alcohol yield was obtained. This catalytic system could be potentially applied to the one-pot synthesis of furfuryl alcohol from hemicellulose-derived xylose.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, the most abundant C5 carbohydrate unit in biomass, namely xylose, was chosen as the feedstock, and its hydrothermal conversion for furfural production was carried out in a green and renewable solvent system composed of water and butanone, in order to study the role of FeCl3 and [bmim]Cl of ionic liquid catalyst in the conversion process of xylose. A key intermediate named xylulose from Lewis acid‐catalyzed xylose isomerization was quantified. It was concluded that appropriate content of FeCl3 and [bmim]Cl favored the isomerization‐dehydration reaction path along which xylose was converted into furfural, while excessive amount of either component would result in side reactions leading to furfural consumption at long reaction times. By comparison between ionic liquid catalysts that had different active metal sites, xylose conversion and furfural yields were found to increase when the Lewis acidity of the metal ions became stronger. Moreover, chlorometallate anions with better catalytic performance than the original neutral salts were formed during catalyst preparation, and in this way, the xylose conversion and furfural formation were further promoted. Finally, the optimized ionic liquid catalyst produced a highest furfural yield of 75% and xylose conversion of 99% at 140°C.

Abstract:Biobased furfural is a sustainable alternative to petrochemical intermediates for bulk chemicals and fuel production. However, existing methods for the conversion of xylose or lignocelluloses in mono-/bi-phasic systems to furfural involve non-selective sugar isolation or lignin condensation, limiting the valorisation of lignocelluloses. Herein, we used diformylxylose (DFX), a xylose derivative that is formed during the lignocellulosic fractionation process with formaldehyde protection, as a substitute for xylose to produce furfural in biphasic systems. Under kinetically optimized conditions, over 76 mol% of DFX could be converted to furfural in water-methyl isobutyl ketone system at a high reaction temperature with a short reaction time. Finally, isolation of xylan in eucalyptus wood as DFX with formaldehyde protection followed by converting DFX in a biphasic system gave a final furfural yield of 52 mol% (on the basis of xylan in wood), which was more than two times of that without formaldehyde. Combined with the value-added utilization of formaldehyde-protected lignin, this study would enable the full and efficient utilization of lignocellulosic biomass components and further improve the economics of the formaldehyde protection fractionation process.

Abstract:Aiming to develop an ecologically and economically viable catalytic pathway, dehydration of D-xylose and hemicelluloses to furfural was performed using tin-loaded sulfonated diatomite (SO4 2−/Sn-DM) as solid acid catalyst in mild reaction system. The solid acid was characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD, ICP, py-IR and NH3-TPD. Results indicated the solid acid was rich in Lewis and Brønsted acidities that mainly contain Sn4+ and sulfonic group respectively, which was distributing uniformly on the surface of modified DM. Compared with the pure water solution, furfural catalyzed in saturated NaCl aqueous-toluene biphasic system showed better performance. The effect of solvent assistant, time and temperature of the catalytic process were optimized. A maximized furfural yield of 80.97% and 84.39% were obtained using xylose and water-soluble hemicelluloses as the substrate respectively. The solid acid catalyst also showed good stability after 5 cycles.

Abstract:Furfural is an important platform chemical that can be produced by dehydration of pentose, which is an important building block of lignocellulosic biomass. In this study, xylose was chosen as the reaction substrate, and a carbon-based solid acid prepared from pectin was used as the catalyst in a mixed solvent consisting of water and γ-valerolactone (GVL). FTIR results showed that the sulfonated catalyst had typical characteristic peaks of sulfonic groups, while the results based on NH3-TPD and elemental analysis showed that the sulfonation temperature changed the surface acid concentration and acid site intensity of the catalyst. A furfural yield of 80.4% and a xylose conversion of 100% were obtained at 170 °C for 60 min. The conversions and product yields were influenced by the reaction temperature, reaction time, solvent composition, and catalyst acidity. Different sulfonation temperatures can change the acidity of the catalyst, which determines the catalytic performance of the catalyst.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Hydrothermal liquefication of biomass to produce high-quality chemicals and liquid fuels is considered as a renewable and sustainable technology. Herein, a one-step hydrothermal method was used to prepare microcrystalline cellulose supported carbon-based catalyst PTA-BC with the activation factor of phosphotungstic acid. It was demonstrated by Py-FTIR, NH3-TPD and XPS that PTA-BC is not only rich in functional groups but also contains Brønsted acid sites (hydroxyl groups) and Lewis acid sites (CC, carboxyl groups). After experimental optimization, the optimum yield of furfural obtained from xylose catalyzed by PTA-BC was 81.02% at the reaction temperature of 180 °C and the reaction time of 20 min. The results show that PTA-BC contains –COOH, –OH and CC as catalytic sites and that the synergistic effect of these functional groups. The nature of the reaction solvent, appropriate reaction temperature and residence time are the main reasons for the good catalytic performance. This work provides a promising way for the synthesis of solid acid catalyst, which has a wide application prospect for the production of furfural.
