Abstract:With the recent trend of increasing size for the dairy operations, dairy manure, due to its high content of phosphorus and relatively low nitrogen/phosphorus ratio, is limited when applied in the area where phosphorus is saturated in the soil. Electrocoagulation is a potential method to treat dairy manure for phosphorus removal and the operation parameters of this process can significantly affect the process efficiency. In this study, an 800 mL electrocoagulation reactor equipped with low carbon steel electrodes was investigated on its operation parameters, including current, agitation speed, initial pH, aeration time, and anaerobic digestion as pretreatment. The results showed that higher current and higher initial pH could improve the phosphorus removal efficiency. Agitation assisted the formation of coagulants, but high speed of agitation did not contribute further separation and removal of phosphorus. Pretreatment, i.e., aeration or anaerobic digestion before electrocoagulation, was beneficiary for phosphorus removal. The suggested operation parameters are with current under 1 A, agitation of 75 rpm, and higher initial pH. Pretreatment with 10 days of anaerobic digestion or 60 min of aeration before electrocoagulation is also recommended, and phosphorus removal efficiency in this condition can reach 97%. Overall, electrocoagulation with low carbon steel electrodes is an efficient method to remove phosphorus in dairy manure, and the process may potentially reduce the environmental impact of dairy operations on local water systems and increase the manure application scope and its competitiveness compared with chemical fertilizers.
A Pilot-Scale Study of Electrocoagulation on Phosphorus Removal from Animal Manure and the Economic Analysis

Abstract:Manure management is a challenge as the animal barns are tend to be larger operations. Electrocoagulation has a great potential to be applied in animal barns because it can effectively separate liquid and solid as well as nitrogen and phosphorus from animal manure. This work evaluated a pilot scale electrocoagulation with low carbon steel as electrodes working on dairy manure, shallow-pit and deep-pit swine manure. Over 66% of the phosphorus in electrocoagulation treated swine manure was recovered in sludge with less than 10% of the phosphorus in the untreated volume. The TN/P2O5 ratio in swine manure sludge after electrocoagulation decreased to 0.52-0.78 while it increased to 10.61 -38.56 in the supernatant after electrocoagulation, which significantly reduced the risk of phosphorus overdose as manure fertiliser to pollute the environment. However, the pilot electrocoagulation removed 79.3% of the dairy manure phosphorus into sludge while the sludge volume was 48% of the total volume. The economic analysis showed that an electrocoagulation system in a barn with 2400 head grown-finish pigs for 20 years would add $1.04 and $3.32 per pig of additional annualised cost in a shallow-pit swine barn and deeppit swine barn, respectively. The environmental benefits of manure nutrient balancing and phosphorus sustainability make it worth to develop electrocoagulation technology on animal barns. (C) 2022 IAgrE. Phosphorus Recovery from Dairy Manure Wastewater by Fungal Biomass Treatment

Abstract:Polyphosphate accumulating fungi was cultured to remove and recover the excessive phosphorus from dairy manure wastewater (DMW). The microbial treatment removed 83.9% of phosphorus in 20-fold diluted DMW by the fungal biomass in 12 h. At the meantime, 33.6% of chemical oxygen demand, 46.5% of total nitrogen, and 89.4% of total ammonia nitrogen were removed as well. At seventh reuse batch, the cells could still remove 50.4% of phosphorus from the diluted wastewater. The average phosphorus removal efficiency in seven reuse batches was calculated as 62.1%, the nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio in DMW increased from 3.6 : 1 to 6.3 : 1. With the treatment, DMW will be more suitable for farmland irrigation, with the better nutritional ratio to support crop growth, and it will help mitigate phosphorus pollution to water bodies caused by over-applied phosphorus in the farmland.
The Effects of Electrocoagulation on Phosphorus Removal and Particle Settling Capability in Swine Manure

Abstract:Swine manure is conventionally used as a fertilizer because it contains necessary nutrients for plant growth. When the application rate is formulated based on plant nitrogen requirement, phosphorus will accumulate in the soil over the years and may cause eutrophication in surrounding water bodies. Phosphorus separation from liquid manure before the land application can contribute to better nutrient management, but an appreciable amount of phosphorus exists in the form of fee particles smaller than 45 pm and is therefore difficult to separate by natural sedimentation or other mechanical solid-liquid separation systems. This work evaluated low carbon steel-based electrocoagulation (EC) for phosphorus separation in liquid swine manure sampled from two swine barns, and assessed the mechanisms for improved particle and phosphorus settling ability after EC treatment. The results show that EC pretreatment followed by one-day natural precipitation removed 72.6-86.3% of phosphorus from liquid swine manure. Phosphorus removal kept increased until it reached a plateau (60 min and 140 min for the two types of swine manure). The settling property of EC treated swine manure improved and about 90% of particles was removed. Further analyses indicated that the particle density of the majority part of manure solids (particles with sizes between 25 pm and 45 pm) increased from 1.29 g/mL to 1.36 g/mL after EC, and that the background viscosity of liquid manure decreased from 1.99 g/m*s to 1.64 g/m*s. All of those manure property changes expedited particle and phosphorus settling. Overall, the EC method developed in this study successfully achieved the goal of improving phosphorus recovery and solid-liquid separation from swine manure, and has a potential to achieve better separation and to consume less energy after process optimization.
Remove and Recover Phosphorus During Anaerobic Digestion of Excess Sludge by Adding Waste Iron Scrap

Abstract:In the current investigation, the feasibility of phosphorus removal in the anaerobic digestion of excess sludge by adding waste iron scrap (WIS) was studied. The results show that the removal efficiency of phosphorus increases with the amount of WIS, and the maximum removal efficiency could reach 39%, 93% and 99% at WIS dosages of 1, 2 and 3 g/L, respectively. Sterilization greatly decreases the removal efficiency of phosphorus, having only -6%, 53% and 64% at WIS dosages of 1, 2 and 3 g/L, respectively. This means that iron-reducing bacteria and hydrolytic bacteria enhance 45%, 40% and 35% of phosphorus removal at WIS dosages of 1, 2 and 3 g/L, respectively. The first and the most important mechanism of phosphorus removal using WIS is hydrolytic bacteria, which reduce the pH of sludge to corrode the WIS, followed by precipitation of phosphorus by ferrous iron generated from the iron-reducing bacteria. Phosphorus adsorption onto the WIS is the second probable mechanism. The removed phosphorus is recovered up to 56% using magnet. This method is characterized by high removal efficiency, easy and steady operation, low cost, recovery and reuse, making it better than other physical and chemical treatments.

Abstract:Abstract A batch monopolar electrocoagulation system was developed and studied for the removal of phosphorus from anaerobic bioreactor effluent using iron as an electrode material. The study focused on the optimization of the independent variables, such as initial pH, retention time (RT), current density (CD) and inter-electrode distance (IED) using the response surface methodology (RSM) to maximize the removal of total phosphorus (TP). A quadratic model was fitted to the experimental data for TP removal. The optimal parameters were found to be pH of 6.75, RT of 11.06 min, CD of 300 A/m2, and inter-electrode distance of 1.5 cm resulting in 98.05% TP removal and energy consumption of 1.28 kWh/m3. A kinetic study for TP removal revealed that at optimal conditions, removal followed first-order kinetics (K = 0.185 m/min). Phosphorus was recovered from the post-precipitated sludge through combustion at 900 °C followed by acid leaching with sulfuric acid. Acid leaching tests were carried out with sulfuric acid for the post-precipitated sludge obtained at the optimum conditions. It resulted in around 91% of phosphorus recovery at a liquid-to-solid ratio of 100 mL/g.

Abstract:Abstract Excessive discharge of phosphorus into the water bodies is the key factor to cause eutrophication. The fruit and vegetable wastewater contains large amounts of phosphorus, and it may be directly discharged into water bodies, which has a great burden on the municipal sewage pipe network. Therefore, coagulation was used to remove phosphorus, recovered the phosphorus from the wastewater into the precipitate, and then the precipitate was pyrolyzed as an efficient adsorbent for phosphate removal. By comparing the adsorption effects of adsorbents (XT-300, XT-400, and XT-500) with pyrolysis temperatures of 300 °C, 400 °C, and 500 °C on phosphate in actual phosphorus-containing wastewater and simulated phosphorus-containing wastewater at different adsorbent dosage (4 g/L, 7 g/L, and 10 g/L), it was found that XT-300 had the best performance of adsorption, and the adsorption of phosphate was endothermic and obeyed the Langmuir isotherms and Elovich kinetics. The influence of pH, coexisting anions, and the structure of XT-300 revealed that the removal of phosphate was associated with electrostatic attraction, pore filling, but could not be determined whether it was related to surface precipitation. This study provides a way and method for the recovery and utilization of phosphorus in fruit and vegetable wastewater and proves that the synthetic adsorbent was an efficient phosphorus adsorbent. In the long term, we can try to use the adsorbent after phosphorus adsorption to promote plant growth in agricultural systems.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) recovery from dairy wastewater involves its accumulation into phosphorus-rich sludge using a physico-chemical or biological process. The high iron content in chemical sludge decreases its usability in agricultural activities. The hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an option used to treat the sludge to obtain hydrochar for various applications, including its use as an energy source and as a carbon-dense material. The HTC process leaves a bigger volume of nutrient-rich liquor, which phosphorus (P) purification was the subject of this work. By direct precipitation, the product iron content was 17.96%, a value higher than accepted limits for phosphate fertilizers. Thus, P extraction followed by struvite precipitation was studied. The use of oxalic acid extracted 86.7% of P from HTC liquor, while 86.6% of iron was removed. The process conditions of pH 9, and salt dosage of 1.73:1.14:1 for Mg:NH4 +:P mole ratio for struvite precipitation were obtained with a P recovery of 99.96%, and the effluent P concentration below 2 mg∙L−1. The quality of products as fertilizers was tested by both in-vitro and in-vivo assays. High iron content in the product demonstrated a negative effect on plant germination, whilst the precipitation product from P extract demonstrated an advantage of P purification into struvite for plant macro and micronutrient availability. The used method of P extraction followed by struvite precipitation is useful for both P and iron recovery into two separate products with agricultural and chemical applications, respectively.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion (AD) produces renewable biogas from organic-rich waste streams, but the resultant digestate has to be subject to further nutrient recovery processes for better valorization. In this study, an electrochemical treatment unit using stainless steel mesh electrodes was integrated with an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor to treat liquid dairy manure for simultaneous phosphorus (P) recovery, methane production improvement, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal. The 36-d batch AD trial showed that a large portion of total P and reactive P were removed from the liquid dairy manure and were recovered mainly on the cathode deposits in the form of phosphate-bearing minerals. In the continuous USAB trial with an applied voltage of 1.0 V, 65.1% of the total P in the feeding manure was removed, of which 96.7% was achieved by sludge bed accumulation and 3.3% in the cathode deposit. Increases in both biogas production rate (13.0%) and methane yield (10.9%) were observed in the electrochemically assisted UASB system as compared to the one without electrochemical treatment. The electrochemical assistance helped decrease the H2S concentration in biogas by 20.8% at an applied voltage of 0.5 V and by 50.3% at 1.0 V. This electrochemically assisted UASB system can produce more biogas with less H2S content and recover P-enriched sludge in the sludge bed and the cathode deposit.

Abstract:Recovery of valuable resources, such as phosphate recovery from wastewater, can help close the nutrient cycle and is interesting to investigate. This study aims to evaluate phosphate recovery and set aside TOC, OC, and IC in agricultural wastewater using electrocoagulation with a helix electrode configuration. This study employed the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for statistical analysis and modeling, utilizing a central composite design (CCD). Variation of calcium concentration (2-7 mg/L), voltage (15-45 V), and electrocoagulation time (5-15 min) was applied in an electrocoagulation reactor with a helix-shaped stainless steel cathode and a solid cylindrical Mg anode. Based on RSM analysis, electrocoagulation with a helical electrode configuration significantly affects phosphate recovery and the removal of TOC, OC, and IC when treating agricultural wastewater. Under operating conditions of 15 V, 15 min time, and 2 mg/L calcium concentration, we achieved the lowest phosphate concentration of 0.003 mg/L (99.74% reduction). The highest TOC allowance is > 100% of the initial concentration, the TC allowance is 55.79%, and the IC allowance is 30.91%. The formation of metal hydroxides affects the efficiency of TOC removal in the electrocoagulation process, and higher electrolysis times lead to higher TOC removal efficiency. Higher voltages also improve the coagulation and flotation processes in the reactor. Calcium concentration plays a role in enhancing the flocculation process and binding phosphonates from wastewater.

Abstract:Livestock and poultry waste contain large amounts of phosphorus (P). Recycling phosphorus from manure solves environmental pollution and reduces the consumption of phosphate rock. Most P existed in an insoluble form in chicken manure and was challenging to utilize further. When the carbon source (rice straw in this study) was added to adjust the C/N ratio, the release of P was greatly improved by up to 2–3 fold within 5 days, and Ruminococcaceae became dominant in the microbiota. In the presence of sufficient amounts of carbon, microorganisms can generate organic acid and decrease the pH value, thereby improving the dissolution of phosphorus. After examining the changes in phosphorus species in the system, carbon addition facilitated the dissolution of amorphous calcium phosphate, and hydroxyapatite remained the major residual P species. After decalcification and pH adjustment, nearly 100% phosphate released to the solution could be recovered as struvite.

Abstract:It is necessary to recover and utilize phosphorus from waste due to the nonrenewable and irreplaceable nature of phosphate rock. The ash of food waste biogas digestate after incineration is enriched with phosphorus resources. In this paper, two-compartment cell electrodialysis experiments with different times and currents were employed to extract phosphorus and separate metals from the food waste biogas digestate ash (FDS). Eventually, the phosphorus was extracted at the anode, and the metal was separated into the cathode. Compared with the method of simple acid leaching (65%), electrodialysis with 10 mA current achieved more than 90% extraction of phosphorus after 7 days, which is in the form of phosphoric acid. Investigation of the extraction mechanism reveals a positive effect between the precipitation-dissolution equilibrium of the Ca-P precipitation and the mechanism. The percentage of phosphorus leakage to the cathode is less than 3%. Almost all of the dissolved metal is separated, except for a very minor amount of Fe (5%) that remains in the anolyte. Our research introduces an efficient phosphorus extraction method from FDS utilizing electrodialysis and creates a new market for the resource utilization of food waste biogas digestate ash.

Abstract:Electrochemical recovered ferric phosphate (FePO4) precipitates from hypophosphite-laden wastewater were shown to be an efficient method for phosphorus (P) recovery. However, the influence of chloride ions (Cl-) coexisting commonly in wastewater is not known for this treatment. Herein, a field-induced electro-Fenton coupled with anodic oxidation electrochemical system consisting of a Ti-RuO2 anode, an Fe inductive electrode and an activated carbon fiber (ACF) cathode, namely Ti-RuO2/Fe/ACF(NaCl) system, was established to recover phosphorus (P) as FePO4 from hypophosphite-laden wastewater in the presence of Cl-. This system enabled a hypophosphite (H2PO2-, 1.0 mM) removal ratio of ~100% and all P was recovered within 30 min at 5.0 V under the initial solution pH of 3.0. The Faradaic efficiency and energy consumption of P recovery achieved the maximum value (~94%) and the lowest value (~16 kW h kg-1 P), respectively. Reactive oxygen species including 1O2, FeIVO2+, •O2- and •OH contribute to convert H2PO2- to PO43-, which immediately formed FePO4 with the generated Fe3+ at the optimized conditions. Therein, the contribution of non-radical 1O2 was very considerable. This system exhibited good stability. The efficiency and cost for treatment of actual hypophosphite-laden wastewater were addressed to check its applicability for P recovery.

Abstract:Membrane technologies are challenged by severe membrane fouling when treating animal manure digestate due to high turbidity and high concentrations of organic and inorganic matter. In this study, a bench-scale electrodialysis reversal (EDR) was carried out to assess its feasibility for nutrient recovery from pig manure digestate. Pretreatment consisted of acidification for releasing phosphorus to the liquid phase and low-speed centrifugation for removing large particles. Results showed complete removal of NH4+ and removal of phosphate up to 84% from the feed solution, with their concentrations in the product reaching 4.2 and 0.7 g/L at a volumetric ratio of 6/2, respectively. During the semi-continuous operation, particle and chemical deposition were significantly mitigated. Despite periodical HCl cleaning, tyrosine-like and humic-like substances fouled anion-exchange membranes (AM) gradually. Nevertheless, this fouling ceased after treating the digestate at a capacity of 330 L/m(2) membrane when the conductivity and ion-exchange capacity of AM decreased by 18.5% and 13.3% compared with the virgin membrane, respectively. Based on infrared spectra, these organic foulants existed in the fouling area around the membrane surface, rather than migrating deeper into the interior of the membrane. This study reveals a potential of long-term operation of EDR for treating pig manure digestate.
Phosphorus Removal from Wastewater Using Electric Arc Furnace Slag Aggregate

Abstract:Electric arc furnace (EAF) slag aggregate, a waste by-product of the steel industry, exhibited a high potential for phosphorus (P) removal and had attracted considerable attention. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of using EAF slag aggregate as an adsorbent for P removal and identify its P removal capacity. A series of batch tests showed that P removal capacity of EAF slag increases gradually with the increase of pH with a range of 2-10, while the highest P removal capacity (1.94 mg/g) can be obtained at pH 12. The adsorption kinetics of P on EAF slag can be described by pseudo-second-order kinetic equations. Isothermal adsorption simulations showed that the best fitted model was the Freundlich model with a correlation coefficient of 0.9825. A continuous flow column experiment feeding a synthetic influent containing 15 mg P/L was operated for 60 days and the P removal efficiency was greater than 95% with a P removal capacity of 1.6 mg P/g slag. The results obtained in this study showed that EAF slag could act as an efficient adsorbent for P removal. Calcium phosphate precipitation depends on the release of Ca(2+)and OH(-)by the dissolution of calcium oxide in EAF slag was found to be the dominant removal mechanism for P removal.

Abstract:The excessive discharge of phosphorus-containing wastewater contributes to eutrophication, posing a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, methods such as electrocoagulation should be utilized to remove phosphorus from wastewater prior to discharging it into a water body. In this study, we aimed to determine the effectiveness of electrocoagulation in treating simulated phosphorus-containing wastewater under different parameters, including anode material (aluminum, iron, and magnesium), electrode distance (ED) (1, 2.5, and 4.5 cm), pH (3, 6, and 9), and current density (CD) (3, 6, and 9 mA/cm2). Additionally, three models of phosphate removal, the pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), and Behnajady–Modirshahla–Ghanbery (BMG) models, were used to simulate the relationship between phosphate concentration and time in the electrocoagulation process using the three metals for phosphate removal. The experimental results showed that the aluminum system had the highest removal efficiency (90%) when energized for 20 min under a CD of 3 mA/cm2, followed by those of the iron (80%) and magnesium (35%) systems. Furthermore, a life cycle assessment (LCA) showed that the aluminum electrode system had a smaller environmental impact than the iron and magnesium electrode systems. Therefore, the aluminum electrode system is suitable for phosphorus removal from wastewater.

Influence of Cell Configuration and Long-Term Operation on Electrochemical Phosphorus Recovery from Domestic Wastewater

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is an important, scarce, and irreplaceable element, and therefore its recovery and recycling are essential for the sustainability of the modern world. We previously demonstrated the possibility of P recovery by electrochemically induced calcium phosphate precipitation. In this Article, we further investigated the influence of cell configuration and long-term operation on the removal of P and coremoved calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and inorganic carbon. The results indicated that the relative removal of P was faster than that of Ca, Mg, and inorganic carbon initially, but later, due to decreased P concentration, the removal of Ca and Mg became dominant. A maximum P removal in 4 days is 75% at 1.4 A m-2, 85% at 8.3 A m-2 and 92% at 27.8 A m-2. While a higher current density improves the removal of all ions, the relative increased removal of Ca and Mg affects the product quality. While the variation of electrode distance and electrode material have no significant effects on P removal, it has implication for reducing the energy cost. A 16-day continuous-flow test proved calcium phosphate precipitation could continue for 6 days without losing efficiency even when the cathode was covered with precipitates. However, after 6 days, the precipitates need to be collected; otherwise, the removal efficiency dropped for P removal. Economic evaluation indicates that the recovery cost lies in the range of 2.3-201.4 euro/kg P, depending on P concentration in targeted wastewater and electrolysis current. We concluded that a better strategy for producing a product with high P content in an energy-efficient way is to construct the electrochemical cell with cheaper stainless steel cathode, with a shorter electrode distance, and that targets P-rich wastewater.

Abstract:In this study, a novel acidogenic phosphorus recovery (APR) process was developed in combination with iron-facilitated primary sedimentation for enhanced phosphorus (P) removal and recovery in wastewater treatment. Compare with the current P recovery methods from the wastewater sludge by acidic chemical leaching, the new method process has advantages such as easy operation, high recovery efficiency, valuable by-products and little secondary pollution. The experimental results show that over 94.6% chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 89.6% P were reliably removed from municipal wastewater. In fermentation system, more than 80% of total Fe was reduced as Fe(II) through dissimilatory iron reduction in fermenters and about 40% of total P can be recovered from the wastewater influent in the form of vivianite. Acidogenic fermentation and dissimilatory iron reduction were identified as two essential processes for the P release and recovery from the sludge.

Abstract:Recovering phosphorus from livestock wastewater could partly mitigate the global phosphorus resource crisis. Crystallization is a promising method for removing phosphorus from wastewater, but the costs of calcium- and magnesium-containing reagents are increasing. Cheap, available, efficient materials are required to replace conventional calcium and magnesium reagents. Here, we describe a new approach to removing and recovering phosphorus from livestock wastewater of a large pig farm, containing a high phosphorus concentration. The effects of the pH, stirring speed, stirring time, and extract dose (containing calcium and magnesium) on phosphorus removal from livestock wastewater were investigated. The product was characterized by X-ray diffractometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Under optimized conditions (pH 9.0, stirring speed 200 r/m, stirring time 600 s, Ca 207.62 mg/L, Mg 122.86 mg/L), 92% of the phosphorus was removed from livestock wastewater. The product was mainly the hydroxyapatite (Ca5(PO4)3OH) precursor amorphous calcium phosphate but also contained 1.65% (by mass) magnesium ammonium phosphate (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) crystals. The cost of dolomite to treat 1 m3 of high-phosphorus wastewater was 0.20 yuan (45.9%, 25.9%, and 75.9% lower than for pure MgCl2, MgSO4, and CaCl2, respectively) in 2019. Using dolomite to provide calcium and magnesium effectively decreases the crystallization process cost and should encourage the use of crystallization to remove phosphorus from wastewater.

Abstract:Abstract Iron–carbon microelectrolysis was employed to remove phosphorus in this study. The efficiency, mechanism, influence factors, and feasibility of actual wastewater were investigated. The results showed that iron–carbon microelectrolysis had an excellent phosphorus removal ability. When the initial concentration of PO 4 3 − {\text{PO}}_{4}^{3-} –P was 19.44 mg·L −1 , after 120 min reaction time, the remaining PO 4 3 − {\text{PO}}_{4}^{3-} –P in wastewater was 4.65 mg·L −1 , and the removal rate was 76.05%. The precipitate formed in the reaction was mainly ferric phosphate (FePO 4 ), which had a high recovery value. There was a linear correlation between initial phosphorus concentrations and phosphorus removal velocity. As to actual wastewater, 88.37 ± 0.44%, 89.78 ± 1.88%, and 94.23 ± 0.16% phosphorus removal rates were achieved in the influent of municipal wastewater treatment plant, effluent of secondary sedimentation tank, and actual high salinity wastewater, respectively, after 120 min reaction time. This study provides a new method for phosphorus removal and recovery from wastewater.
