Abstract:High performance flexible inverted organic solar cells (OSCs) employing the low temperature cathode buffer bilayer combining the aqueous solution-processed ZnO and polyethylenimine ethoxylated (PEIE) are investigated based on Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butryric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC61BM) and Poly({4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-2,6-diyl}{3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexy)carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl}):[6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PTB-7:PC71BM) material systems. It is found that, compared with pure ZnO or PEIE cathode buffer layer (CBL), the proper combination of low-temperature processed ZnO and PEIE as the CBL enhanced the short circuit current density (JSC), resulting in better device performance. The increased JSC results from the enhanced electron collection ability from the active layer to the cathode. By using the ZnO/PEIE CBL, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 4.04% for the P3HT:PC61BM flexible device and a PCE as high as 8.12% for the PTB-7:PC71BM flexible device are achieved, which are higher than the control devices with the pure ZnO CBL or pure PEIE CBL. The flexible inverted OSC also shows a superior mechanical property and it can keep 92.9% of its initial performance after 1000 bending cycles with a radius of 0.8 cm. These results suggest that the combination of the low temperature aqueous solution processed ZnO and PEIE can be a promising cathode buffer bilayer for flexible inverted OSCs.

Abstract:Inverted polymer solar cells of the conventional poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):(6,6)-phenyl-C61butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) blend on indium tin oxide substrates were fabricated. By using mixed-solvent dispersed ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) as cathode buffer layer, device performances are improved obviously. ZnO NPs with a size of 3–5 nm synthesized by solvothermal synthesis at 65 °C show relatively wide photoluminescence peak of 300–650 nm. Based on Hansen solubility parameter theory, a mathematical method was applied to calculate the Hansen solubility parameters of bi-solvent system to disperse ZnO NPs and the proportion of each component in the mixed solvent. This excellent dispersion for ZnO NPs in the bi-solvent system has a important influence on the performance of the device. Compared to other methods of ZnO nanofilm fabrication, this method reveals a simple, convenient, moderate and effective way to manufacture the favorable buffer layer in organic solar cells.
Stable Inverted Low-Bandgap Polymer Solar Cells with Aqueous Solution Processed Low-Temperature ZnO Buffer Layers

Abstract:Efficient inverted low-bandgap polymer solar cells with an aqueous solution processed low-temperature ZnO buffer layer have been investigated. The low-bandgap material PTB-7 is employed so that more solar light can be efficiently harvested, and the aqueous solution processed ZnO electron transport buffer layer is prepared at 150°C so that it can be compatible with the roll-to-roll process. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the inverted device reaches 7.12%, which is near the control conventional device. More importantly, the inverted device shows a better stability, keeping more than 90% of its original PCE after being stored for 625 hours, while PCE of the conventional device is only 75% of what it was. In addition, it is found that the ZnO thin film annealed in N2 can obviously increase PCE of the inverted device further to 7.26%.

Abstract:This paper reports that high performance metal oxide thin film transistors (TFTs) can be achieved by using LiF-doped ZnO thin films processed from aqueous solution. It was found that LiF doping at an appropriate amount enhanced the oxide film carrier concentration. The TFTs based on the 10 mol % LiF-doped ZnO thin films annealed at 300 °C revealed a good device performance with an average electron mobility of 8.9 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and a high on/off current ratio of 4 × 10(7), superior to the devices based on the nondoped ZnO TFTs (1.6 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1)). Even when annealed at 150 °C, the device still showed good transistor operation with an electron mobility of 0.54 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). The inverted bulk heterojunction solar cells based on P3HT:PCBM blend system fabricated using 10 mol % LiF doped ZnO as electron selective layer showed higher power conversion efficiency (η = 3.3%) than that from undoped ZnO thin films (η = 2.94%) due to enhanced short circuit current (Jsc = 10.55 mA/cm(2)). Our results suggest that LiF incorporation can be a useful technique to produce high performance and low temperature solution-processed oxide TFTs and interface layer for solar cells.

Abstract:In this work, we report high electron transport and hole blocking capability of hybrid photoconductive interlayer materials manufactured from an aqueous solution, which are achieved by doping perylene bisimide dyes into zinc oxide (ZnO) through the formation of ionic bonding between the organic dopants and the inorganic matrix. Benzenesulfonic acid functional groups are introduced to perylene bisimide dye molecules, which enhance the solubility of the dye molecules in water and form ionic bonds with zinc atoms during the fabrication of the hybrid thin films. The ionic bonding assisted molecular dispersion endows the hybrid thin film with full photoconductive properties, which improves electron transport by photo induced electron transfer from organic dye molecules to the conduction band of ZnO. Especially, the hole blocking ability is also highly increased. Both increased electron transport and hole blocking are benefits to the charge selectivity of the cathode interlayer, which results in a high fill factor in organic solar cells. A power conversion efficiency of up to 15.4% is achieved on the basis of such an aqueous solution processed hybrid interlayer when using PM6:Y6 as the active layer. In addition, the optimized thermal annealing temperature for the fabrication of the hybrid thin film is as low as 150 degrees C, which is a benefit for the application of such photoconductive materials in flexible devices.
A Low-Cost and Low-Temperature Processable Zinc Oxide-Polyethylenimine (zno:Pei) Nano-Composite As Cathode Buffer Layer for Organic and Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Nanocomposite buffer layer based on metal oxide and polymer is merging as a novel buffer layer for organic solar cells, which combines the high charge carrier mobility of metal oxide and good film formation properties of polymer. In this work, a nanocomposite of zinc oxide and a commercialized available polyethylenimine (PEI) was developed and used as the cathode buffer layer (CBL) for the inverted organic solar cells and p-i-n heterojunction perovskite solar cells. The cooperation of PEI in nano ZnO offers a good film forming ability of the composite material, which is an advantage in device fabrication. In addition, power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the ZnO:PEI CBL based device was also improved when compared to that of ZnO-only and PEI-only devices. The highest PCE of P3HT:PC61BM and PTB7-Th:PC61BM devices reached to 3.57% and 8.16%, respectively. More importantly, there is no obvious device performance loss with the increase of the layer thickness of ZnO:PEI CBL to 60 nm in organic solar cells, which is in contrast to the PEI based devices, whose device performance decreases dramatically when the PEI layer thickness is higher than 6 nm. Such a nano composite material is also applicable in inverted heterojunction perovskite solar cells. A PCE of 11.76% was achieved for the perovskite solar cell with a thick ZnO:PEI CBL (150 nm) CBL, which is around 1.71% higher than that of the reference cell without CBL, or with ZnO CBL. In addition, stability of the organic and perovskite solar cells having ZnO:PEI CBL was also found to be improved in comparison with that of PEI based device. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In this work, inverted polymer:fullerene organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells with solution-processed zinc oxide (ZnO) as the electron collecting layer are investigated. ZnO films are prepared simply by the spin-casting of a zinc acetate dehydrate precursor solution, followed by sintering under ambient conditions. The performance of the fabricated inverted OPV cells shows a clear dependence on precursor concentration and sintering conditions. With the ZnO film derived from a sol–gel concentration of 0.1 M and sintered at 350 °C for 10 min, the inverted OPV cell shows optimum performance.

Abstract:A facile solution processable and low temperature (≤150 °C) approach was developed to deposit ZnO electron transport interlayers for inverted organic solar cells. The ZnO thin films were fabricated from the stable and non-toxic aqueous precursor solutions of ammine-hydroxo zinc complex, [Zn(NH3)x](OH)2. The resulting inverted poly (3-hexylthiophene): [6-6]-phenyl C61 butryric acid methyl ester solar cells exhibited power conversion efficiency of 4.17% as well as decent stability. We demonstrate that the work function of the ZnO electron transport interlayers was critical in terms of governing the photovoltaic performance of the inverted devices.

Abstract:The aqueous-based Zn-ammine complex solutions represent one of the most promising routes to obtain the ZnO electron transport layer (ETL) at a low temperature in inverted organic solar cells (OSCs). However, to dope the ZnO film processed from the Zn-ammine complex solutions is difficult since the introduction of metal ions into the Zn-ammine complex is a nontrivial process as ammonium hydroxide tends to precipitate metal salts due to acid-base neutralization reactions. In this paper, we investigate the inverted OSCs with Al-doped-ZnO ETL made by immersion of metallic Al into the Zn-ammine precursor solution. The effects of ZnO layer with different immersion time of Al on film properties and solar cell performance have been studied. The results show that, with the Al-doped-ZnO ETL, an improvement of the device performance could be obtained compared with the device with the un-doped ZnO ETL. The improved device performance is attributed to the enhancement of charge carrier mobility leading to a decreased charge carrier recombination and improved charge collection efficiency. The fabricated thin film transistors with the same ZnO or AZO films confirm the improved electrical characteristics of the Al doped ZnO film.

Abstract:Ultrathin ZnO layer of ca. four nm thick deposited from an aqueous zinc oxide hydrate (ZnO center dot xH(2)O) solution is developed as the electron transport layer (ETL) in the inverted polymer solar cells (PSCs). Because of the low energy metal-ammine dissociation and hydroxide condensation/dehydration chemistry, a conversion temperature (T-A) as low as 80 degrees C is achieved With the active layer of poly(N-9 ''-hepta-decanyl-2,7-carbazole-aft-5,5-(4 ',7 '-di-2-thieny1-3 ',2 ',1 '-benzothia-diazole)) doped with [6,6]-phenyl C-71 butyric acid methyl ester (PCDTBT:PC71BM), the average power conversion efficiency of the devices is up to 6.48%, and the short circuit current density reaches 11.4 mA cm(-2). In comparison, the devices with traditional sol-gel processed ZnO electron transport layer has a power conversion efficiency of 5.53% at an annealing temperature of 200 degrees C. The device performance improvement is attributed to the better charge transportation and smoother surface of the ZnO film deposited from ZnO center dot xH(2)O aqueous solution. The simple solution preparation and the facile device fabrication, combined with the low conversion temperature make the aqueous ZnO center dot xH(2)O one of the best candidates for ETL in the inverted PSCs fabricated on low cost, flexible substrates.
Effects of the Morphology of A Zno Buffer Layer on the Photovoltaic Performance of Inverted Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:The influences of morphology and thickness of zinc oxide (ZnO) buffer layers on the performance of inverted polymer solar cells are investigated. ZnO buffer layers with different morphology and thickness varying from several nanometers to approximate to 55 nm are fabricated by adjusting the concentration of the precursor sol. The ZnO buffer layers with nearly same surface quality but with thickness varying from approximate to 7 to approximate to 65 nm are also fabricated by spinning coating for comparison. The photovoltaic performance is found to be strongly dependent on ZnO surface quality and less dependent on the thickness. The use of dense and homogenous ZnO buffer layers enhances the fill factor and short-circuit current of inverted solar cell without sacrificing the open-circuit voltage of device due to an improvement in the contact between the ZnO buffer layer and the photoactive layer. Inverted devices with a dense and homogenous ZnO buffer layer derived from 0.1 M sol exhibit an overall conversion efficiency of 3.3% which is a 32% increase compared to devices with a rough ZnO buffer layer made from 1 M sol, which exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 2.5%. The results indicate that the efficiency of inverted polymer solar cells can be significantly influenced by the morphology of the buffer layer.

Efficient "light-soaking"-free inverted organic solar cells with aqueous solution processed low-temperature ZnO electron extraction layers

Abstract:Low-temperature processes are unremittingly pursued in the fabrication of organic solar cells. The paper reports that the highly efficient and "light-soaking"-free inverted organic solar cell can be achieved by using ZnO thin films processed from the aqueous solution method at a low temperature. The inverted organic solar with an aqueous-processed ZnO thin film annealed at 150 C shows an efficiency of 3.79%. Even when annealed at a temperature as low as 80 C, the device still shows an efficiency of 3.71%. With the proper annealing temperature of 80 C, the flexible device, which shows an efficiency of 3.56%, is fabricated on PET. This flexible device still keeps the efficiency above 3.40% after bent for 1000 times with a curvature radius of 50 mm. In contrast, a low annealing temperature leads to an inferior device performance when the ZnO thin film is processed from the widely used sol-gel method. The device with sol-gel processed ZnO annealed at 150 C only shows a PCE of 1.3%. Furthermore, the device shows a strong "light-soaking" effect, which is not observed in the device containing an aqueous-processed ZnO thin film. Our results suggest that the adopted aqueous solution method is a more efficient low temperature technique, compared with the sol-gel method. © 2013 American Chemical Society.
High-Performance Inverted Polymer Solar Cells with Zirconium Acetylacetonate Buffer Layers.

Abstract:Inverted polymer solar cells incorporating solution-processed zirconium acetylacetonate (ZrAcac) buffer layers were demonstrated. The optimal device delivered a power conversion efficiency up to 9.2%, displaying ∼20% improvement compared with the device of conventional configuration. The performance improvement by adopting ZrAcac as the cathode buffer layer is attributed to the enhanced light-harvesting, facilitated electron transport, and reduced bimolecular recombination loss. The morphology of ZrAcac buffer layer was found to be critical in achieving high performance, which was tunable through the selection of processing solvents. A flat and uniform ZrAcac film consisting of ∼20 nm nanoscale aggregates deposited from a chloroform solution was proved to be highly effective, which only requires a short light-soaking time.

Abstract:The effects of post-treatments (150 degrees C-thermal, humidity, and vacuum) on the cathode buffer layer of aqueous-solution-processed zinc oxide (ZnO) films on the performance of the inverted organic solar cells (OSCs) are investigated, based on poly(3-hexylthiophene)/[6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PC61BM) as the active layers. The devices with the ZnO buffer layers that underwent thermal and vacuum post-treatments exhibited 17% and 15% increments in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) as compared to that of the cell without post-treatment on the ZnO layer, mainly due to the increases of the short circuit current (J(sc)). It was found that the thermal and vacuum post-treatments reduced the defects and increased the electron mobility in the ZnO buffer layers, improving the electron extractions in the inverted OSCs. Both the 150 degrees C-thermal and vacuum post-treatments are compatible with plastic substrates, showing a potential way to further improve the film properties of the low-temperature processed ZnO buffer layers.
Li-Doped ZnO Electron Transport Layer for Improved Performance and Photostability of Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on an inverted architecture generally have better stability compared to those based on a standard architecture. However, the photoactive area of the inverted solar cells increases under ultraviolet (UV) or solar illuminatiom because of the too-high conductivity of the UV-illuminated zinc oxide (ZnO) interlayer. This limits the potential of the inverted solar cells for industrial applications. Herein, lithium-doped ZnO (Li-ZnO) films are employed as the cathode interlayer to construct inverted OSCs. The incorporation of Li ions is found to reduce the lateral conductivity of the UV-treated ZnO films because of the presence of Li ions, preventing the high-quality-growth of ZnO nanocrystals. This addresses the problem of having too-high conductivity in the UV-treated ZnO layer, causing the increased photoactive area of inverted solar cells. The overall performance of the solar cell is shown to be higher after the incorporation of Li ions in the ZnO layer, mainly due to the increased fill factor (FF), originating from the reduced trap-assisted recombination losses. Finally, the inverted solar cells based on the Li-ZnO interlayer are demonstrated to have a much better long-term stability, as compared to those based on ZnO. This allows the ZnO-based interlayers to be used for the mass production of organic solar cell modules.

Abstract:In this study, Sn-doped ZnO (ZTO) is prepared by a sol gel method and is employed as an electron transport material for organic solar cells (OSCs). After Sn modification, the fabricated ZTO films exhibited better charge transport properties and smoother surface morphology, especially for those processed at a low temperature of 120 degrees C. By incorporation of the high temperature (200 degrees C) processed ZTO films, inverted OSCs showed the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.32%, which is higher than those based on the same temperature processed ZnO films. For the devices based on the low-temperature processed ZTO, a high PCE over 9.0% with long-term stability was achieved, which is much better than those based on the same temperature processed ZnO (8.46% PCE). Here, the ZTO films can be fabricated without high-temperature annealing, demonstrating their great potential as electron transport layers for efficient flexible OSCs.

Abstract:A perylene bisimide functionalized with four 4-carboxyphenoxy substituents at bay area (PBI-COOH) was embedded in sol-gel-derived zinc oxide (ZnO) to fabricate organic-inorganic hybrid photoconductive cathode interlayers (ZnO:PBI-COOH) that can be annealed at a rather low temperature of 120-130 °C as desired for plastic substrates for flexible devices. For these interlayers, the structural defects including oxygen vacancy and residual hydroxy groups are reduced that leads to increased electron mobility, and a photoinduced electron transfer from the organic dopant into the conduction band of ZnO endows the hybrid thin film with relatively higher conductivity when compared to the undoped ZnO thin film. The low-temperature-processed hybrid thin films were applied on indium tin oxide electrodes to produce inverted organic solar cells (OSCs) with power conversion efficiencies of 11.68 and 13.48% when using J71:ITIC and PBDB-T-2Cl:IT4F as active layers, respectively. Finally, flexible OSCs are fabricated on poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrates that maintained stability with relatively high performance after 100 times bending.
Zinc Oxide: Conjugated Polymer Nanocomposite As Cathode Buffer Layer for Solution Processed Inverted Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Cathode buffer layer (CBL) is one of the key issues influencing the performance of organic solar cells. In this article, a nanocomposite of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) together with a conjugated polymer, poly[(9,9-bis(3'-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctyl)-fluorene] (PFN) was developed, and used as the CBL for solution processed inverted organic solar cells (OSC). In comparison with the bare ZnO, PFN or ZnO/PFN stacked layer, the ZnO:PFN nanocomposite CBL employing device showed superior device performance, in particular significantly improved fill factor. Optimized power conversion efficiency (PCE) of P3HT:PC61BM and PTB7:PC61BM device using ZnO:PFN composite CBLs reached to 3.56% and 7.17%, respectively. Influences of the mixing ratio and the layer thickness of the ZnO:PFN nanocomposite CBL on solar cell performance were carefully studied, and results indicated that ZnO:PFN CBL showed a wide tolerance of blend ratio and layer thickness. In particular, no obvious thickness dependent-device performance was found, even when the CBL layer thickness was higher than 125nm, providing a good printing processibility of the nanocomposite. Photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence, as well as electric conductivity of the ZnO:PFN films were studied, and the results were compared with that of the other three reference CBLs. Results demonstrated that the interaction between ZnO and PFN decreases the work function of the blended film, leading to a more favorable energy level alignment for electron injection at the interface. Analysis on the dark J–V curves of the solar cells revealed that device using ZnO:PFN CBL had the best diode characteristics including lowest reverse saturated current density (J0), ideal factor (n), and series resistance (Rs), and highest shunt resistance (Rsh). Such an improvement was ascribed to the defect passivation by the conjugated polymer, which led to an improved charge carrier selectivity of the CBL and consequently enhanced the FF of the solar cells. In addition, long-term stability of organic solar cells was also improved by using ZnO:PFN nanocomposite as the CBL. The current work provides a valuable guideline for the development of high performance cathode buffer layer material for printable organic solar cells.
