Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of a sandwich-like nanocomposite by planting rutile TiO2 nanorods onto reduced graphene oxide (RGO) via a modified seed-assisted hydrothermal growth method. The synthetic process consists of functionalization of graphene oxide (GO), followed by hydrolytic deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles on GO and reduction, and finally hydrothermal growth of rutile TiO2 nanorods on RGO. The resultant nanocomposite, i.e. rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays on RGO (TONRAs–RGO), exhibits largely enhanced reversible charge–discharge capacity and rate capability compared to bare TiO2 nanorods (TONRs) due to its unique structure and superior conductivity. The rate performance of the nanocomposite is also better than that of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. This study will inspire better design of RGO-based nanocomposites for high energy density lithium-ion battery applications.
Crystalline SnO2 @ Amorphous TiO2 Core-Shell Nanostructures for High-Performance Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is an attractive anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), but its applications have been significantly hampered by the huge volume change during the electrochemical cycling. In this work we demonstrate a rational design of crystalline SnO2@amorphous TiO2 core-shell nanostructures, where the crystalline SnO2 core was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and the amorphous TiO2 shell was deposited by atomic layer deposition. The SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures deliver excellent performances during the electrochemical process, having a high reversible capacity of 1259 mAh g(-1) at cycling rate of 80 mA g(-1), which is still up to 703 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles. The acceptable rate capacity is also revealed with 412 mAh g(-1) at 400mA g(-1). The coulombic efficiency is stable at around 100% regardless of cycling rates and numbers. The electrochemical performances of the SnO2@TiO2 batteries are better than those of the SnO2 ones without TiO2 coating. In the SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures, the amorphous TiO2 shell layer can experience an isotropic stress, having the ability to evidently reduce the volume change, lattice stress and so the risk of fracture during the cycling process, which is responsible for their outstanding behaviors. Abstract:Nanosized rutile TiO2 is one of the most promising candidates for anode material in lithium-ion micro-batteries owing to their smaller dimension in ab-plane resulting in an enhanced performance for area capacity. However, few reports have yet emerged up to date of rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays growing along c-axis for Li-ion battery electrode application. In this study, single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays growing directly on Ti foil substrates have been fabricated using a template-free method. These nanorods can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of rutile TiO2 in Li-ion batteries. The capacity increase is about 10 times in comparison with rutile TiO2 compact layer.

Abstract:In this paper, rutile TiO 2 nanorod arrays are fabricated by a template-free method and proposed as a promising anode for aqueous Li-ion battery. The as-prepared TiO 2 nanorod arrays exhibited reversible Li-ion insertion/extraction ability in aqueous LiOH electrolyte. Moreover, galvanostatic charge/discharge test results demonstrated that the reversible capacity of TiO 2 nanorods could reach about 39.7 mC cm −2 , and 93.8 % of initial capacity was maintained after 600 cycles at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 (=240 C rate), indicating excellent cycling stability and rate capability.

Abstract:Multilayer graphene (MLG) prepared via ultrasonic exfoliation has many advantages such as its low-cost and defect-free nature, high electronic conductivity, and large specific surface area, which make it an apt conductive substrate for TiO2 composites. To synthesize graphene/TiO2 hybrids, traditional methods that greatly depend on the chemical bond of oxygen-containing functional groups on graphene with titanium cations are not applicable due to the absence of these functional groups on MLG. In this work, a facile chemical method is developed to directly deposit TiO2 on the MLG surface without the introduction of chemically active groups. With this method, four types of TiO2 materials, that is pure anatase TiO2 nanoparticles, a mixture of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles and rutile TiO2 nanoflowers, pure rutile TiO2 nanoflowers, and pure rutile TiO2 nanorods, are homogeneously anchored on the MLG surface by controlling the amount of HCl in the reactant. Interestingly, the rutile TiO2 nanorods in the TiO2/MLG composite are assembled by many TiO2 nanowires with an ultra-small diameter and ultra-long length, which provides a better synergetic effect for high performances as LIB anodes than other composites. A specific capacity of 631.4 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1 is delivered, indicating it to be a valuable LIB anode material with low cost and high electrochemical performances.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Among various anode materials, simple substance Si have emerged as potential anode materials for LIBs due to its high theoretical specific capacity, abundant amount on earth and low cost [1, 2]. Its theoretical specific capacity (4200 mA h g) is much larger than that of the alreadycommercialized graphite (372 mA h g). However, substantial volume changes are associated with the Li alloying and de-alloying process, which causes fast crack and pulverization of Si and results in rapid capacity fade. On the other hand, nanostructured TiO2 owns a very small volume expansion ratio (3%) [3] upon Li ion intercalation/ extraction, and exhibits good cyclic stability [4]. Well-ordered TiO2 nanowire arrays offer a large internal surface area and excellent pathways for Li-ion to transfer between interfaces. So it is an excellent material employed as a stable anode for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Tin oxide, characterized by its exceptional theoretical capacity, emerges as a highly promising alternative anode in the pursuit of high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, inherent limitations in conductivity and structural integrity impede the fulfillment of its energy storage potential. Herein, sophisticated SnO2-carbon nanorods (SnO2/C NRs) derived from a tin-based metal-organic framework are developed for superior lithium storage. The ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals are embedded within a hollow and porous rod-like architecture, ensuring fast multidirectional charge transfer and well-accommodated volume variation during the lithiation/delithiation process. Moreover, the integration of the carbon matrix further promotes electron conduction and reinforces the structural integrity towards fast, efficient, and durable electrochemistry. As a result, the SnO2/C NRs electrodes demonstrate excellent long-term cyclability with a minimal capacity fading rate of 0.089 % per cycle over 500 cycles, and a commendable rate capability with a highly reversible capacity of 922.1 mAh g−1 at 3 C. This work establishes a unique and insightful paradigm for designing advanced electrode materials towards energy-dense next-generation LIBs.

Abstract:Novel nano-heterostructures composed of Fe2O3 hollow nanorods on both the outer and inner surface of the aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) have been fabricated by growing FeOOH nanospindles onto the TNAs, and then followed by thermal transformation in air. Owing to their structural advantages, such a hierarchical architecture exhibits superior electrochemical performance with a remarkable areal capacity of over 600 mu A h cm(-2) at a current density of 100 mu A cm(-2) for 50 cycles(similar to 680 mu A h cm(-2) at 100 mu A cm(-2)). This hierarchal structure might be easily integrated as a binder-free electrode for microscale lithium-ion batteries considering the improved performance and the simple synthesis.

Abstract:The development of high rate lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with long cycle life is essential for the applications of LIBs in some important fields including fast charging electronics and electric vehicles. Significant efforts have been devoted to the development of novel nanostructured electrode materials to meet the requirements for high energy density and high power density. Particularly, one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) metal oxide nanostructures have aroused considerable interest as anode materials because of the shortened paths for fast lithium ion diffusion and large exposed surface offering more lithium-insertion channels. In recent years, it has been shown that oxide nanostructure arrays directly grown on conductive metal substrates may provide binder-free LIB anodes with remarkable advantages including enhanced rate capability and excellent compatibility with flexible electronics. Herein, we report on the solution-phase growth of 1D SnO2 nanorod arrays 5 and 2D Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) nanosheet arrays 6 directly on conductive Ti foil, and their applications as binder-free anodes for LIBs with excellent rate capability.

Abstract:As promising, safe, high-power electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), titanium-dioxide-based anodes that have been prepared to date are still restricted by their limited specific capacity. In this work, we demonstrate a facile electrochemical anodization for TiOx nanotubular arrays of oxygen defects in a nitrogen atmosphere. In comparison with those fabricated under air conditions, the as-prepared nanotubular arrays present much reduced impedance with oxygen defects, which allow fast electronic and ionic transport in the TiOx nanotubular arrays. The binder-free anode based on as-prepared TiOx nanotubular arrays exhibited record-setting capacities (395, 325, and 235 mAh g(-1) at 0.2, 1, and 10C, respectively) among TiO2-based anode materials, that is, approaching state-of-the-art TiO2 electrodes for LIBs.

Abstract:A new anatase/rutile TiO2 nanocomposite microspheres (ART) electrode with hierarchically porous structures was successfully synthesized by a one-step route under mild hydrothermal conditions. The morphology, crystal structure and phase composition, specific surface area and pore size distribution of the obtained nanocomposite were systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements. The as-synthesized nanocomposite microspheres electrodes exhibited superior specific capacity and high-rate charge–discharge performance for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) (∼103 mA h g−1 at 30 C after 100 charge–discharge cycles, 1 C = 170 mA g−1) as compared to commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (P25). The improvement is mainly attributed to enhanced Li-ion diffusion and efficient charge transport as evidenced from cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Most importantly, the materials architecture used in this study, comprising of dual-phase TiO2 nanocrystals with hierarchically porous structures would be a general concept that could be applicable in the development of other mixed-phase electrode materials for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Carbon-coated SnO2 nanorod array directly grown on the substrate has been prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method for anode material of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The structural, morphological and electrochemical properties were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical measurement. When used as anodes for LIBs with high current density, as-obtained array reveals excellent cycling stability and rate capability. This straightforward approach can be extended to the synthesis of other carbon-coated metal oxides for application of LIBs.

Abstract:Tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) has attracted extensive attention as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity, however, it suffers from the severe volume changes upon lithiation/delithiation cycling, thus leading to fast capacity fading. To overcome the drawbacks, we herein report a facile one-pot self-templating fabrication of Ti-doped SnO 2 @carbon nanotubes (Ti-SnO 2 @CNTs), via annealing the electrospun precursor nanofibers of tetrabutyl titanate (TBT), tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and stannous chloride (SnCl 2 ). Interestingly, the introduction of TBT or not can lead to the controlled fabrication of the tubular or solid fibrous structure. During the annealing process, the chemical reaction between PVDF, TEOS, and TBT in-situ leads to the formation of tubular structure, while the SnCl 2 converts into ultrafine SnO 2 nanoparticles, embedding into the PVP-derived N-doped carbon nanotubes. When employed as anode materials for LIBs, the Ti-SnO 2 @CNTs deliver high reversible capacities of 868.6/495.9 mAh g −1 at 0.2/1.0 A g −1 after 200/500 cycles, higher than those for the fibrous SnO 2 @CNFs counterpart (654.9/391.08 mAh g −1 ). The better lithium storage performance is related to the unique carbon nanotube structure and the Ti-doping, which bring improved electrical conductivity, enhanced structural stability, and shortened ion diffusion path. More importantly, we demonstrate the facile electrospinning fabrication of tubular nanostructured hybrid electrodes for high-performance energy storage applications.

Abstract:In this paper, rutile TiO2 nanoneedle/graphene composites with a unique one dimensional/two dimensional (1D/2D) hybrid nanostructure were prepared via a facile hydrothermal route. These obtained rutile TiO2 nanoneedles with the length of ~500nm have a homogeneous dispersion on the interlayers of graphene nanosheets. As the anodic materials, the as-prepared sample exhibited the superior Li storage capability with good cycling stability (over 94% capacity retention) and remarkable rate performance (149mAhg−1 at a 5C rate). The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the unique microstructure. On the one hand, 1D rutile TiO2 nanoneedles shorten the length of Li+ transport paths to achieve a higher Li+ diffusion rate. On the other hand, 2D graphene sheets provide good electronic contacts to reduce the contact resistance, as well as keep the structural integrity of the electrode materials.

Abstract:Benefiting from large tunnel structure, zero strain feature, and excellent pseudocapacitive performance, Ti2Nb10O29 was considered as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, Ti2Nb10O29 cages comprised of nanorod units were elaborately designed. The mesoscopic structure could effectively shorten the ion diffusion pathway, and the big central electrolyte reservoir relieves the concentration polarization of electrolyte. Moreover, the perforated pore feature guarantees competent contact between electrolyte and framework. As the anode of LIBs, the mesoscopic Ti2Nb10O29 cages deliver high reversible capacity (302.5 mAh/g) and rate capability (134.3 mAh/g at 30 A/g). This unique mesoscopic structure holds excellent potential for the electrode design of high-rate and long-life LIBs.

Abstract:Exploring novel electrode materials is the key to developing attractive lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Hence, we successfully synthesized /Ti 3 C 2 by in situ growth-sulfuration-pyrolysis strategies. As LIBs anode, its initial discharge capacity of /Ti 3 C 2 was 1509 mAh g -1 and its discharge capacity was 301.2 mAh g -1 at 1 A g -1 . Most importantly, when the current density recovered to 0.03 A g -1 continuing 20 cycles and maintained excellent capacity of 864.6 mAh g -1 . Notably, its capacity was 649.9 mAh g -1 after 700 cycles at 0.5 A g -1 . Such extraordinary performances are mainly attributed to (1) carbon matrix can improve conductivity of composite material, effectively buffer volume expansion of material during cycles process, and prevent structure collapse. (2) the hollow structure produced by sulfuration, porous carbon matrix and the gaps among Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets are conducive to the penetration of electrolytes. They provide abundant buffer space for volume expansion during Li + embedding/stripping process, which effectively alleviates structure collapse and electrode crushing. (3) Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets as high-conductive 2D substrate not only offer fast diffusion channels but also alleviate structure collapse of More importantly, this unique structure can alleviate restacking of Ti 3 C 2 and provide affluent active sites, thus endowing material with improved electrical conductivity. Our work provides insightful insights into the design of transition metal sulfides (TMSs) anchored at Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets as LIBs anode.
