Abstract:Rational design/fabrication of integrated porous metal oxide arrays is critical for the construction of advanced electrochemical devices. Herein, we report self-supported CuO/C core/shell nanowire arrays prepared by the combination of electro-deposition and chemical vapor deposition methods. CuO/C nanowires with diameters of ~400 nm grow quasi-vertically to the substrates forming three-dimensional arrays architecture. A thin carbon shell is uniformly coated on the CuO nanowire cores. As an anode of lithium ion batteries, the resultant CuO/C nanowire arrays are demonstrated to have high specific capacity (672 mAh·g-1 at 0.2 C) and good cycle stability (425 mAh·g-1 at 1 C up to 150 cycles). The core/shell arrays structure plays positive roles in the enhancement of Li ion storage due to fast ion/electron transfer path, good strain accommodation and sufficient contact between electrolyte and active materials.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of nanostructured hybrid CoO/Cu electrodes through electrodeposition and sputtering. When applied as the anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the CoO/Cu nanowire arrays deliver long cycle life and enhanced power performance than CoO/Cu films. The large accessible surface area and improved electronic/ionic conductivity of the nanostructured electrodes may be responsible for the improved performance. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Herein, Cu nanowires are utilized as a self-sacrificial template to synthesize CuO hollow nanotubes (HTs) by a facile wet chemical method. The HTs with a diameter 549 ± 83.6 nm and rough surface, are constructed by well-distributed curved ultrathin nanosheets. When employed as an anode electrode in Li-ion batteries, the resulting CuO HTs exhibited a high specific capacity of 736 mAh g−1, superior rate performance and high cyclic performance. The excellent electrochemical performance of CuO HTs can be attributed to the high specific surface area, abundant unimpeded diffusion paths and high electron transfer rate due to the unique two-dimensional nanosheets structure and hollow structure. Moreover, the hollow structure provides enough space to accommodate volumetric changes and structural strain during the charge/discharge process, resulting in excellent cyclic stability. The current report presents a novel strategy to develop high-performance anodes for next-generation Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Multicomponent hetero-structured metal oxide arrays are playing important roles in the development of advanced optical and electrochemical devices. Herein, we report shish-kebab-like NiO@Co3O4 nanowire arrays by a simple two-step hydrothermal method. Interestingly, lots of hexagonal NiO nanoflakes are randomly assembled on the preformed Co3O4 nanowire arrays forming a shish-kebab-like architecture. As cathode of alkaline battery, the as-prepared NiO@Co3O4 nanowire arrays exhibit a specific capacity of 89mAhg−1 at 1.25Ag−1 and 75mAh g−1 at 20Ag−1, respectively. The unique architecture provides higher reaction surface area resulting in higher capacity.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Both cobalt oxide and tin are electrochemically active materials, and can be integrated into hybrid core-shell nanowire structures that can participate in lithium-ion insertion-deinsertion process. We demonstrate the synthesis of cobalt oxide-tin (Co3O4-Sn) core-shell nanowire arrays by the hydrothermal synthesis of Co3O4 nanowire arrays and subsequent deposition of the tin layer via a RF-sputtering method. When used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, the Co3O4-Sn core-shell nanowire electrodes show better cyclability and enhanced rate capacities compared to bare Co3O4 electrodes. The improved performance can be attributed to the introduction of the tin layer, which improves the electrical conductivity and structural stability of the Co3O4 nanowire arrays.

Abstract:A simple microemulsion-based method has been developed to synthesize ZnCo2(C2O4)(3) nanowires that can be transformed to porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires under annealing conditions. The morphology of porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires can be tuned by the initial ZnCo2(C2O4)(3) nanowires and the annealing temperatures. The as-synthesized porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires have been applied as anode materials of Li-ion batteries, which show superior capacity and cycling performance. The porous one-dimensional (ID) nanostructures and large surface area are responsible for the superior performance. Moreover, it is indicated that porous ZnCo2O4 nanowires synthesized at low annealing temperature (500 degrees C) show larger capacity and better cycling performance than that prepared at high annealing temperature (700 degrees C), because of their higher porosity and larger surface area.

Abstract:Arrays of self-supported core-shell nanowire have attracted considerable attention with respect to improved capability for electrochemical energy storage. Herein, we report a facile strategy, involving hydrothermal and liquid phase deposition (LPD) routes, to fabricate nano-coaxial Co3O4/TiO2 arrays with intriguing morphologies, architectures, and chemical compositions. When tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, these nanohybrids exhibited high reversible capacity, excellent cycling stability and good rate capability. It is assumed that the excellent electrochemical performance originates from the intricate core-shell nanoarchitecture and the coating effect of TiO2, including improved mechanical/chemical stability and good strain accommodation. The improved lithium ion storage performance of the Co3O4/TiO2 nanostructure indicates its potential application as an anode material for electrochemical energy storage and the potential use of TiO2 coating for modification of other anode materials.

Abstract:Hierarchical CoxMn3-xO4 array micro-/nanostructures with tunable morphology and composition have been grown on conductive stainless steel with robust adhesion by a facile solvothermal route and a subsequent annealing treatment. By simply controlling the volume ratio of components in the mixed solvent, the morphology of the products can be tailored from hierarchical nanowires to nanosheets. Benefitting from the unique structural features, the resultant CoMn2O4 nanowires and MnCo2O4 nanosheets exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with remarkable specific capacities (540-207 mA h g(-1)) at various current rates (1-10 C) and good cycling stability for highly reversible lithium storage. The enhanced electrochemical performance suggests their promising use as integrated binder-free electrodes for microscale lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A new nanostructure of one-dimensional Co3O4/Co3V2O8 hybrid nanowires directly grown on Ti substrates with improved electrochemical Li-storage properties are successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal strategy. The nanocomposites consist of the primary Co3O4 nanowires acting as the “core” and secondary Co3V2O8 nanocrystals as the “shell” layer, which form one-dimensional tentacle-like nanostructure. When used as potential anodes for lithium ion batteries, the Co3O4/Co3V2O8 hybrid nanowires exhibited an enhanced capacity with high initial discharge capacity of 1677 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 and retained at 1251 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles. Even when the current reached 5000 mA g−1 the electrode can still maintain an average discharge capacity of 807 mA h g−1. The enhanced electrochemical performances are attributed to unique hybrid nanowire architecture and an improved synergistic effect of two electrochemically component, ranking the hybrid nanostructure as a promising electrode material for high-performance energy storage systems.

Abstract:Three-dimensional Co3O4@SnO2@Ag core-shell nanowire arrays are prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis of Co3O4 nanowire arrays and subsequent deposition of SnO2 and Ag by radiofrequency sputtering. When used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, the Co3O4@SnO2@Ag core-shell nanowire arrays show good cycling and rate performance, compared to corresponding Co3O4 arrays, Co3O4@SnO2 arrays, and Co3O4@SnO2@Ag planar electrodes. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the three-dimensional core-shell nanostructures and the addition of Ag, which can improves the electrical conductivity and structure stability during the charge/discharge process.

Abstract:A hierarchically Fe2O3@Co3O4 nanowire array is prepared by the aid of hydrothermal synthesis and sacrificial hydrolysis method. The obtained nanowire array shows hierarchical porosity and large surface area. The resulted Fe2O3@Co3O4 nanowire array is evaluated as an anode material for Li ion batteries, which exhibits high capacity and good cycle stability (1005.1 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g(-1)) and an excellent rate performance, mainly owing to the unique hierarchical nanowire architecture and an elegant synergistic effect of two electrochemically active materials. The developed strategy can be readily generalized to construct other multifunctional hybrid nanostructures, which will be promising materials for high-performance electrochemical devices. Abstract:Novel nano-heterostructures composed of Fe2O3 hollow nanorods on both the outer and inner surface of the aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) have been fabricated by growing FeOOH nanospindles onto the TNAs, and then followed by thermal transformation in air. Owing to their structural advantages, such a hierarchical architecture exhibits superior electrochemical performance with a remarkable areal capacity of over 600 mu A h cm(-2) at a current density of 100 mu A cm(-2) for 50 cycles(similar to 680 mu A h cm(-2) at 100 mu A cm(-2)). This hierarchal structure might be easily integrated as a binder-free electrode for microscale lithium-ion batteries considering the improved performance and the simple synthesis.

Abstract:A novel material of Si/TiO2 nanowire array (TNA) composite has been designed and fabricated, to be used as anode material for lithium ion batteries. Firstly, Self-assembled and well-aligned rutile TiO2 nanowire arrays are synthesized on pretreated titanium substrate by solvothermal route. Subsequently, Si film is introduced into the interspace of the nanowires, forming a Si/TNA composite. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images indicate that the dimension of TiO2 nanowires is 10 ± 2 nm wide. The TEM and Raman results reveal that Si contains amorphous and nanocrystalline phases. The composite with 75% Si content owns the best electrochemical performance, the first charge capacity reaches as high as 1480 mA h g−1, and remains at 802.3 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles.

Abstract:Thin CuO nanowires with a diameter of 7 ± 3 nm, aspect ratio up to 103–104 and specific surface area of 51.08 m2 g−1 were synthesized by shape-reserved transformation from the corresponding thin copper hydroxide nanowires (CHNs) under an appropriate temperature. A topotactic transition of the crystal structure between Cu(OH)2 and CuO occurred. CdO nanowires were also successfully prepared by this synthetic method. Subsequently, thin CuO nanowires/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) interpenetrating networks were prepared from preformed Cu(OH)2 nanowire/CNT interpenetrating networks and these demonstrated a much higher electrochemical performance than that of pure CuO nanowires for lithium ion batteries. When the CNTs were 33.3 wt% of the CuO nanowires/CNTs interpenetrating networks, they gave the best electrochemical performance, including high capacitance as well as good stability.

Abstract:2D non-layered materials (2DNLMs) featuring massive undercoordinated surface atoms and obvious lattice distortion have shown great promise in catalytic/electrocatalytic applications, but their controllable synthesis remains challenging. Here, a new type of ultrathin carbon-wrapped titanium nitride nanomesh (TiN NM@C) is prepared using a rationally designed nano-confinement topochemical conversion strategy. The ultrathin 2D geometry with well-distributed pores offers TiN NM@C plentiful exposed active sites and rapid charge transfer, leading to outstanding electrocatalytic performance tackling the sluggish sulfur redox kinetics in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). LSBs employing TiN NM@C electrocatalyst deliver excellent rate capabilities (e.g., 304 mAh g(-1) at 10 C), greatly outperforming that of using TiN nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanosheets (TiN NPs@C) as a benchmark. More impressively, a free-standing electrode for LSBs with a high sulfur loading of 7.3 mg cm(-2) is demonstrated, showing a high peak areal capacity of 5.6 mAh cm(-2) at a high current density of 6.1 mA cm(-2). This work provides a new avenue for the facile and controllable fabrication of 2DNLMs with impressive electrocatalysis for LSBs as well as other energy conversion and storage technologies.

Abstract:Fast, high-yield, and controllable synthesis of functional hydroxide and oxide nanomaterials on conductive substrates is highly desirable for the energy generation and storage applications. For the same purpose, three-dimensional hierarchical porous nanostructures are being regarded advantageous. In this work, we report the fabrication of porous metal hydroxide nanosheets on a preformed nanowires scaffold using the fast and well-controllable electrodeposition method. Co(OH)(2) and Mn(OH)(2) nanosheets are electrochemically deposited on the Co3O4 core nanowires to form core/shell arrays. Such oxide/hydroxide core/shell nanoarrays can be realized on various conductive substrates. The Co3O4/Co(OH)(2) core/shell nanowire arrays are evaluated as a supercapacitor cathode material that exhibits high specific capacitances of 1095 F/g at 1 A/g and 812 F/g at 40 A/g, respectively. The mesoporous homogeneous Co3O4 core/shell nanowire arrays, obtained by annealing the Co3O4/Co(OH)(2) sample, are applied as the anode material for lithium ion batteries. A high capacity of 1323 mAh/g at 0.5 C and excellent cycling stability are demonstrated. Our results show that electrodeposition is a versatile technique for fabrication of nanometal oxides on 3-D templates for electrochemical energy applications.

Abstract:We have developed a simple approach for the large-scale synthesis of cobalt nitrate carbonate hydroxide hydrate (Co(CO3)(0.35)(NO3)(0.2)(OH)(1.1)center dot 1.74H2O) nanowires via the hydrothermal process using sodium hydroxide and formaldehyde as mineralizers at 120 degrees C. The porous Co3O4 nanorods 10-30 nm in diameter and hundreds of nanometres in length have been fabricated from the above-mentioned multicomponent nanowires by calcination at 400 degrees C. The morphology and structure of cobalt nitrate carbonate hydroxide hydrate nanowires and Co3O4 nanorods have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and x-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Moreover, the porous Co3O4 nanorods have been applied in the negative electrode materials for lithium ion batteries, which exhibit high electrochemical performance.
