Abstract:FePS3@C nanocomposites are successfully synthesized by a facile two-step route. The as-synthesized samples show excellent thermal and environmental stability. As a novel anode material for lithium batteries, the FePS3@C nanocomposites exhibit a high capacity of 1000 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 0.2 A g(-1) and excellent reversibility over 100 cycles, indicating their promising applications in lithium storage.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of Cu nanoporous three-dimensional current collector via a simple template-assisted method. Silicon, germanium and tin are selected as the anode materials to illustrate the enhanced performance. When tested as electrodes in lithium-ion batteries, they all show high reversible capacity with excellent rate performance. The three-dimensional nanostructure allows for good accommodation of the volume change and ensures a large surface area contact with active material and enhances the conductivity, which should be responsible for the enhanced performance.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of three-dimensional Cu-Ge core-shell nanowire array electrodes by directly depositing Ge on the surface of pre-synthesized Cu nanowire arrays via an rf-sputtering method. When used as anodes of lithium-ion batteries, the Cu-Ge nanowire arrays display a high capacity of 1419 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 C after 40 cycles and 734 mAh g(-1) at 60 C after 80 cycles, which is better than planar electrodes. The improved performance can be attributed to the good electrical contact, fast electron transport and good strain accommodation of the nanowire array electrodes. The effect of the thickness of Ge layer on the electrochemical performance of the three-dimensional electrodes has also been investigated.

Abstract:Three-dimensional Co3O4@SnO2@Ag core-shell nanowire arrays are prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis of Co3O4 nanowire arrays and subsequent deposition of SnO2 and Ag by radiofrequency sputtering. When used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, the Co3O4@SnO2@Ag core-shell nanowire arrays show good cycling and rate performance, compared to corresponding Co3O4 arrays, Co3O4@SnO2 arrays, and Co3O4@SnO2@Ag planar electrodes. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the three-dimensional core-shell nanostructures and the addition of Ag, which can improves the electrical conductivity and structure stability during the charge/discharge process.

Abstract:Cu-Sn core-shell three-dimensional electrodes have been successfully synthesized by directly depositing metallic Sn on the surface of presynthesized Cu nanowire arrays. When used as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, the Cu-Sn three-dimensional electrode exhibits a high reversible capacity, a high initial Coulombic efficiency, a good rate capability, and an improved capacity retention. The effect of the thickness of the Sn layer on the Li-ion battery performance has also been investigated. The efficient buffering of the volume change, fast transport of electrons, and good contact to the current collector of the array structure may be responsible for the good cycling performance.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of new Cu-Si 1-xGe x core-shell nanowire array electrodes by directly depositing Si 1-xGe x layer on the surface of pre-synthesized Cu nanowire arrays via co-sputtering method. When used as anodes of lithium-ion batteries, the Cu-Si 1-xGe x (x = 0.4) nanowire array electrodes show excellent electrochemical performance in terms of cycle stability and rate capability, which is much better than that of planar electrodes. The improved performance can be attributed to the good strain accommodation, fast electron transport and good electrical contact of the nanowire array electrodes. Abstract:A facile hydrolysis-coupled redox (HCR) reaction followed by postheating reduction has been designed to prepare unique 3D Cu/Fe3O4 core-shell nanorod array anodes. Fe2+ ions from fresh FeSO4 solution have been hydrolyzed and oxidized to form an Fe(OH)3 shell on the surface of Cu(OH)2 nanorods; meanwhile the resulting acidic environment induces the reduction of Cu(OH)2 to Cu2O, which realizes an unusual redox reaction between Fe2+ ions and Cu(OH)2. The reaction procedure and thermodynamics possibility between Fe2+ ions and Cu(OH)2 nanorod arrays are discussed from the aspect of electrode potentials. After postheating reduction in Ar/H2, the obtained 3D architecture of Cu current collector serves as a stout support for the Fe3O4 shell to form nanorod array anodes without using any binders or conducting agents. The resulting highly stable core-shell structure facilitates rapid and high-throughput transport pathways for ions/electrons and allows better accommodation of volume change during the repeated lithiation/delithiation. Its application as anodes in combination with LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathodes for full cells demonstrates superior rate capability, enhanced energy density, and long cycling life.

Abstract:Multicomponent hetero-structured metal oxide arrays are playing important roles in the development of advanced optical and electrochemical devices. Herein, we report shish-kebab-like NiO@Co3O4 nanowire arrays by a simple two-step hydrothermal method. Interestingly, lots of hexagonal NiO nanoflakes are randomly assembled on the preformed Co3O4 nanowire arrays forming a shish-kebab-like architecture. As cathode of alkaline battery, the as-prepared NiO@Co3O4 nanowire arrays exhibit a specific capacity of 89mAhg−1 at 1.25Ag−1 and 75mAh g−1 at 20Ag−1, respectively. The unique architecture provides higher reaction surface area resulting in higher capacity.
Preparation and Electrochemical Performance of 3D Structured LiFePO4 Nanowire Arrays

Abstract:The LiFePO4 nanowire arrays was successfully fabricated by a sol-gel method using anodic oxide aluminum (AAO) as the template. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed the synthesized LiFePO4 nanowire arrays were monodispersed and parallel to one another. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) investigations jointly demonstrated a pure olivine structure of the synthesized LiFePO4 nanowire arrays. The LiFePO4 nanowire arrays also showed excellent electrochemical performance as cathode materials of lithium ion battery. Compared with nanoparticles prepared by the same condition, the nanowire arrays exhibited desirable rate performance (156.4 mAh/g at 0.1C and 106.9 mAh/g at 10C) and excellent cycle stability (99.1% after 100 cycles at 1C and 91.6% after 350 cycles at 10C). © 2017, Materials Review Magazine. Abstract:An ideal electrode material of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) is expected to not only involve nanoscale subunits, but also possess a stable 3D porous hierarchical microstructure. Herein, a green and bottom-up approach is developed for fabricating robust 3D nanowebs assembled from interlinked and sandwich-like carbon@Fe3O4@carbon coaxial nanocables. The uniform growth of iron oxide precursors on carbon substrates is achieved with the assistance of a layer-by-layer assembled polyelectrolyte, which is demonstrated to be a strategy applicable to the preparation of various carbon-based functional composites. The carbon components of the hybrid materials are in situ doped with nitrogen due to the utilization of nitrogen-containing polymers as carbon sources. In such rationally nanoengineered materials, the 3D nitrogen-doped carbon nanowebs can provide a continuous pathway for electron transport, reduce the diffusion length of Li-ions, and improve the structural integrity and stability of the whole electrode. Accordingly, the obtained materials exhibit impressive Li-storage properties including high capacity, long cycle life, and superior rate performance.
Controllable Synthesis of Copper Oxide/Carbon Core/Shell Nanowire Arrays and Their Application for Electrochemical Energy Storage

Abstract:Rational design/fabrication of integrated porous metal oxide arrays is critical for the construction of advanced electrochemical devices. Herein, we report self-supported CuO/C core/shell nanowire arrays prepared by the combination of electro-deposition and chemical vapor deposition methods. CuO/C nanowires with diameters of ~400 nm grow quasi-vertically to the substrates forming three-dimensional arrays architecture. A thin carbon shell is uniformly coated on the CuO nanowire cores. As an anode of lithium ion batteries, the resultant CuO/C nanowire arrays are demonstrated to have high specific capacity (672 mAh·g-1 at 0.2 C) and good cycle stability (425 mAh·g-1 at 1 C up to 150 cycles). The core/shell arrays structure plays positive roles in the enhancement of Li ion storage due to fast ion/electron transfer path, good strain accommodation and sufficient contact between electrolyte and active materials.

Abstract:We report a facile, two-step hydrothermal synthesis of a novel Co3O4/α-Fe2O3 branched nanowire heterostructure, which can serve as a good candidate for lithium-ion battery anodes with high Li+ storage capacity and stability. The single-crystalline, primary Co3O4 nanowire trunk arrays directly grown on Ti substrates allow for efficient electrical and ionic transport. The secondary α-Fe2O3 branches provide enhanced surface area and high theoretical Li+ storage capacity, and can also serve as volume spacers between neighboring Co3O4 NW arrays to maintain electrolyte penetration as well as reduce the aggregation during Li+ intercalation, thus leading to improved electrochemical energy storage performance.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of Ag-NiO core-shell nanoparticle arrays via a one-step solution-immersion process and subsequent RF-sputtering technique. The Ag nanoparticle arrays on copper substrate are firstly prepared by a displacement reaction at mild temperature of 303K. Then, a NiO layer is deposited onto the surface of the Ag nanoparticles via RF-sputtering technique. When evaluated as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, the Ag-NiO core-shell electrode shows higher capacity and better cycling performance than the planar NiO electrode. The in-situ synthesized Ag nanoparticles can enhance the interfacial strength between the active material and substrate, andimprove the electrical conductivity of the electrode, which may be responsible for the enhanced performance.

Abstract:Monodispersed LiFePO4 [001] nanorods have been successfully synthesized via a conventional hydrothermal route with Li2SO4, FeSO4 and KH2PO4 as precursors. Subsequently, in virtue of the good monodispersibility LiFePO4@C core-shell [001] nanorods are facilely prepared by employing a carbon coating process on the obtained monodispersed LiFePO4 [001] nanorods. On the basis of the experimental results, a possible formation mechanism of the monodispersed LiFePO4 [001] nanorods has been proposed. Due to the full carbon coating, size reducing in [010] and the perfect olivine crystal lattice, the LiFePO4@C core-shell [001] nanorods exhibit excellent rate capacity and stable cycle performance.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.
