Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous N-doped carbon nanoflake structures decorated with in situ formed Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NCNS) have been synthesized for the first time by a feasible salt-assisted polymer blowing-up method. The 3D porous carbon materials can be an effective lithium host for the application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) in addressing the challenging issues of the growth of lithium dendrites and the uncontrollable formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The 3D hosts can effectively restrain the growth of Li dendrites by trapping metallic Li in the matrix as well as decreasing local current. Ag nanoparticles act as heterogeneous nucleation sites because of the low nucleation overpotential, and therefore, spatial control of Li metal is realized. The as-fabricated Ag-NCNS electrode presents a dendrite-free plating morphology and long-term cycling stability with the Coulombic efficiency maintained at more than 98% for 200 cycles at 0.5 mA cm(-2) with a cycling capacity of 1.0 mA h cm(-2). In symmetric cells, the Ag-NCNS/Li electrode exhibits much lower voltage hysteresis and stable cycling performance for more than 2000 h.

Abstract:Densely vertical-grown NiFe hydroxide nanosheets on a nickel foam (DVS-NFOH@NF) were designed and synthesized for a dendrite-free lithium anode. As a result, the Li dendrite was significantly suppressed. The invented Li anode presented a uniform morphology and great cycle performance in a symmetric cell.

Abstract:In this study, Fe3O4/carbon nanocomposites as anode materials of Li-ion batteries were synthesized through heating hierarchically porous Fe-based xerogels under N2 atmosphere. The pyrolysis of amorphous Fe-xerogel base materials resulted in the simultaneous formation of Fe3O4/C composites, in which Fe3O4 particles of less than 50nm were uniformly dispersed and embedded in a porous carbon matrix. Due to the favorable nanostructure, the synthesized Fe3O4/C composites with a proper carbon content of 18.8wt.% exhibited good electrochemical performance including high capacity and rate capability as well as much enhanced cyclic stability.

Abstract:Sandwich-structured C@Fe3O4@C hybrids with Fe3O4 nanoparticles sandwiched between two conductive carbon layers have attracted more and more attention owing to enhanced synergistic effects for lithium-ion storage. In this work, an environment-friendly procedure is developed for the fabrication of sandwich-like C@Fe3O4@C dodecahedrons. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)-derived carbon dodecahedrons (ZIF-C) are used as the carbon matrix, on which iron precursors are homogeneously grown with the assistance of a polyelectrolyte layer. The subsequent polydopamine (PDA) coating and calcination give rise to the formation of sandwiched ZIF-C@Fe3O4@C. When being evaluated as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the obtained hybrid manifests a high reversible capacity (1194 mAh g−1 at 0.05 A g−1), good high-rate behavior (796 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1), and negligible capacity loss after 120 cycles.

Abstract:A novel 3D porous nano-Ni/Fe3O4 composite film is prepared by electrodepositing 3D porous nano-Ni onto a Cu current collector followed by electrochemical plating of Fe3O4 nanoflakes. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the resultant 3D porous nano-Ni/Fe3O4 composite film shows an improved initial columbic efficiency of 86.0%, high capacity and good cycle stability (951.9 mA h g(-1) at 1 C up to 50 cycles), as well as enhanced rate capability. This unique electrode configuration possesses the following features: high Fe3O4- electrolyte contact area, direct contact between each naonflake and its 'own' current collector of nano-Ni, fast Li+ diffusion and better accommodation of volume change. It suggests that the 3D porous nano-Ni/Fe3O4 composite film, synthesized by the two-step electrodeposition strategy, is a promising anode material for high energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A new nanocomposite system based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles confined in three-dimensional (3D) dual-mode cubic porous carbon is developed using the nanocasting and wet-impregnation methods to assess its performance as an anode for lithium-ion batteries. Several Fe3O4 precursor concentrations are chosen to optimize and determine the best-performing nanocomposite composition. The cubic mesoporous carbon CMK-9 offers a better ability for the Fe3O4 nanoparticles to be accommodated inside the mesopores, efficiently buffering the variation in volume and equally enhancing electrode/electrolyte contact for rapid charge and mass transfer. Among the prepared nanocomposites, the Fe3O4(13)@C9 anode delivers an excellent reversible discharge capacity of 1222 mA h g−1 after 150 cycles at a current rate of 100 mA g−1, with a capacity retention of 96.8% compared to the fourth cycle (1262 mA h g−1). At a higher current rate of 1000 mA g−1, the nanocomposite anode offers a superior discharge capacity of 636 mA h g−1 beyond 300 cycles. The present study reveals the use of a 3D mesoporous carbon material as a scaffold for anchoring Fe3O4 nanoparticles with impressive potential as an anode for new-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:3-Dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites with interconnected macropores and co-continuous hollow skeletons are facilely synthesized and used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The interconnected macropores impede the agglomeration of primary particles and buffer the volumetric variations, hollow mesoporous skeletons not only improve the interfacial contact area between electrode and electrolyte but also facilitate lithium ions transfer rate. Moreover, N-doped carbon layer further enhances the conductivity and mechanical strength of skeletons, as well as accelerates electron transfer during repeated discharge and charge process. The as-prepared 3-dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites possess excellent Li-ion storage properties, delivering a high reversible capacity of 972 mAh g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles and a decent specific capacity of 711 mAh g(-1) even at a large current density of 1000 mA g(-1) after 400 cycles. These values are among the highest reported for ZnFe2O4-based materials with different morphologies and nanostructures. The resultant ZnFe2O4/C composites display the potential practical application for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:A Fe2O3@NiO core/shell nanorodarray on carbon cloth was prepared with the aid of hydrothermal synthesis combined with subsequent chemical bath deposition. The resultant array structure is composed of Fe2O3 nanorods as the core and interconnected ultrathin NiO nanoflakes as the shell. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the heterostructured array electrode delivers a high discharge capacity of 1047.2 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles at 200 mA g(-1), and 783.3 mA h g(-1) at a high current density of 2000 mA g(-1). The excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique 3D core/shell nanorod array architecture and a rational combination of two electrochemical active materials. Our growth approach offers a simple and effective technique for the design and synthesis of a transition metal oxide hierarchical array that is promising for high-performance electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:3D microbatteries hold great promise as on‐board energy supply systems for microelectronic devices. The construction of 3D microbatteries relies on the development of film deposition techniques that can enable coatings of uniform electrode and electrolyte materials in high‐aspect‐ratio substrates. Here, a 3D FePO4 on carbon nanotubes (CNTs@FePO4) structure is fabricated by coating FePO4 on CNTs/carbon paper substrate using atomic layer deposition. Compared to FePO4 on a planar substrate, the 3D CNTs@FePO4 electrode exhibits significantly increased areal capacity and excellent rate capability for lithium‐ion and sodium‐ion storage. The 3D CNTs@FePO4 maintains areal capacities of 64 and 33 μAh cm−2 after 180 cycles for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium‐ion batteries, which are 16 and 33 times higher than those of planar FePO4 electrode, respectively. Moreover, hybrid 3D CNTs@FePO4@Li3PO4 structure is fabricated by coating Li3PO4 solid‐state electrolyte on 3D CNTs@FePO4. The CNTs@FePO4@Li3PO4 electrode shows stable cycling performance in LIBs. Hard X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy analysis demonstrates that the Li3PO4 coating prevents the formation of undesirable LiF in the solid‐electrolyte interphase layer, which is believed to be responsible for the performance degradation in CNTs@FePO4. This work paves the way to building reliable 3D nanostructured electrode and electrolyte architectures for high areal capacity microbatteries.

Abstract:AbstractWe report a facile synthesis of a novel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) hierarchical nanostructure, in which crystalline core-amorphous shell Co3O4 nanoparticles with a bimodal size distribution are uniformly dispersed on ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheets. When tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared Co3O4 hierarchical electrodes delivered high lithium storage properties comparing to the other Co3O4 nanostructures, including a high reversible capacity of 1053.1 mAhg−1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C (1 C = 890 mAg−1), good cycling stability and rate capability.

Abstract:Lithium metal has been considered as the most promising anode electrode for substantially improving the energy density of next-generation energy storage devices. However, uncontrollable lithium dendrite growth, an unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI), and infinite volume variation severely shortens its service lifespan and causes safety hazards, thus hindering the practical application of lithium metal electrodes. Here, carbon fiber film (CFF) modified by lithiophilic Co3O4 nanowires (denoted as Co3O4 Nws) was proposed as a matrix for prestoring lithium metal through a thermal infusion method. The homogeneous needle-like Co3O4 nanowires can effectively promote molten lithium to infiltrate into the CFF skeleton. The post-formed Co-Li2O nanowires produced by the reaction of Co3O4 Nws and molten lithium can homogeneously distribute lithium ions flux and efficaciously increase the adsorption energy with lithium ions proved by density functional theory (DFT) calculation, boosting a uniform lithium deposition without dendrite growth. Therefore, the obtained composite anode (denoted as CFF/Co-Li2O@Li) exhibits superior electrochemical performance with high stripping/plating capacities of 3 mAh cm(-2) and 5 mAh cm(-2) over long-term cycles in symmetrical batteries. Moreover, in comparison with bare lithium anode, superior Coulombic efficiencies coupled with copper collector and full battery behaviors paired with LiFePO4 cathode are achieved when CFF/Co-Li2O@Li composite anode was employed.

Abstract:Magnetic transition-metal oxides show great prospect as alternatives to prevail anodic carbonaceous substances for lithium ion battery in virtue of their splendid theoretical capacity. However, in addition to their intrinsic poor electronic conductivity, the severe agglomeration of the forming magnetic metal nanoparticles during discharging will deteriorate their actual electrochemical performance in a strong magnetic field environment. Here, we demonstrate a 3D spatially-confining magnetic anode to settle all these dilemmas, in which conversion-type magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with a thin carbon encapsulation layer are anchoring onto 3D nickel nanotube arrays skeleton (Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @C NTAs). The carbon shell spatially confines the agglomeration of Fe nanoparticles and maintains the exceptional integrity of structure. The Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @C NTAs anode exhibits high-capacity lithium storage (∼1286 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C) and superior rate/cycle capability (retaining ∼97 % of initial reversible value at 1 C after long-term 1000 cycles).

Abstract:Fe3C@carbonnanocapsules(*)/expanded graphite composite was successfully prepared by a new and facile method, including mix of starting materials and heat treatment of the precursor. It is featured by unique 3-D structure, where expanded graphite acts as scaffold to ensure a continuous entity, and Fe3C particles coated by carbon nanocapsules are embedded intimately. The Fe3C nanoparticles encased in carbon nanocapsules act as catalyst in the modification of SEI film during the cycles. The interesting 3-D architecture which aligns the conductivity paths in the planar direction with expanded graphite and in the axial direction with carbon nanocapsules minimizes the resistance and enhances the reversible capacity. The prepared composite exhibits a high reversible capacity and excellent rate performance as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The composite maintains a reversible capacity of 1226.2 mAh/g after 75 cycles at 66 mA/g. When the current density increases to 200 mA/g, the reversible capacity maintains 451.5 mAh/g. The facile synthesis method and excellent electrochemical performances make the composite expected to be one of the most potential anode material for lithium ion batteries. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of three-dimensionally porous Fe3O4 via template-assisted and subsequent electrochemical deposition methods. When used as anode materials of lithium–ion batteries, the porous Fe3O4 electrodes show better cyclability and enhanced rate capabilities compared to planar Fe3O4 electrodes. The superior performance can be attributed to improved electrical contact, fast electron transport and good strain accommodation of the porous electrodes. The effect of the thickness of the porous Fe3O4 electrodes on the lithium–ion battery performance has also been investigated.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides as the most prominent candidates with high theoretical capacities; however, serious agglomeration and enormous volumetric variation limit its application in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a chemical blowing strategy for the synthesis of FeS nanoparticles encapsulated into 3D porous carbon framework via chemical vapor deposition method and subsequent sulfidation process. In the constructed architecture, the monodispersed FeS nanoparticles are fully encapsulated in graphitic carbon, simultaneously, confined in 3D architecture composed of 2D graphitic carbon nanosheets. The unique architecture provides a facilitated transport pathway, enhances electron conductivity and buffers the volumetric expansion of FeS. Consequently, the composite delivers a high reversible capacity of 1084.2 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, excellent rate capability (723.5 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1), and outstanding cycling stability (a specific capacity of 848.3 mAh g−1 without decay is achieved at 0.5 A g−1). Abstract:We report to synthesize the novel three-dimensional anode based on the core-shell Sn-Ni-Cu-alloy@carbon nanorods which was fabricated by pulse nano-electrodeposition. Li-ion batteries equipped with the three-dimensional anode demonstrated almost 100% capacity retention over 400 cycles at 450 mA g-1 and excellent rate performance even up to 9000 mA g-1 for advanced Li-ion battery. Insight of the high performance can be attributed to three key factors, such as Li-Sn alloys for Li-ion storage, Ni-Cu matrix for the electronic conductive and nanorods structure, the carbon shell for the electronic/Li-ion conductive and holding stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) because these shells always kept stable volumes after extension of initial charge-discharge cycles.

Abstract:The practical applications of Li metal batteries (LMBs) have long been limited by the obstacles of low Coulombic efficiency (CE) and formation of dendrites on Li metal electrode. Herein, we demonstrated the synthesis of a novel three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured skeleton substrate composed of nitrogen-doped hollow carbon fiber/carbon nanosheets/ZnO (NHCF/CN/ZnO) using 2-methylimidazole (2-MIZ)-coated 3D cloth as a scaffold. The mechanism of formation of this novel hierarchical structure was investigated. The multilayered hierarchical structure and abundant lithiophilic nucleation sites of the substrate provide a stable environment for the deposition and stripping of lithium metal, thus preventing the generation of lithium dendrites. Consequently, the lithium anode based on the NHCF/CN/ZnO current collector demonstrated an excellent Coulombic efficiency of 96.47% after 400 cycles at 0.5 mA cm-2. The prepared NHCF/CN/ZnO/Li electrode also showed outstanding cycling performance of over 800 h and an ultralow voltage hysteresis of less than 30 mV in a symmetric cell at 5 mA cm-2 and 5 mAh cm-2. Even at a high loading of the cathode with 10.4 mg cm-2, the full cell of NHCF/CN/ZnO/Li anode with LiFePO4 can also work very well. Our work offers a path toward the facial preparation of 3D hierarchical structure for high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Nanostructure design strategies are highly desired in lithium ion batteries due to the attractive properties of nanosizing. Herein, the hollow octahedra ZnFe2O4@C nanocomposites are synthesized through Zn-Fe MOFs as precursor and used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Notably, ZnFe2O4@C nanocomposites possess unique structure, where ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles (~20 nm) well scatters in each surface of the hollow octahedra carbon skeleton (~600 nm) and are also confined by coating carbon. This structure efficiently avoids particle agglomeration, buffers volume expansion, facilitates electron transfer and shortens diffusion lengths. Benefiting from above advantages, ZnFe2O4@C exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, including high specific capacity (1780 mAh g−1 at 1A g−1 after 400 cycles), superb rate capability (557 mAh g−1 at 15 A g−1) and ultra-long cycling stability (918 mAh g−1 at 3 A g−1 after 800 cycles). As much, this work may develop an effective nanostructure aiding in designing a variety of metal oxide/carbon composites of interest for energy storage applications.
