Abstract:Mono- and bimetallic Ni-based catalysts were prepared by screening 6 supports and 14 secondary metals for reductive amination of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) into 2,5-bis(aminomethyl)furan (BAMF), among which gamma-Al2O3 and Mn were the best candidates. By further optimization of the reaction conditions at 0.4 g catalyst loading for 0.5 g substrate of 5-HMF and 160 degrees C of reaction temperature, 10Ni/gamma-Al2O3 and 10NiMn(4 : 1)/gamma-Al2O3 achieved the highest BAMF yields of 86.3 and 82.1 %, respectively. Although the BAMF yield values were comparable with that over Raney Ni, the turnover frequencies based on the initial BAMF yield and unit weight of Ni for 10NiMn(4 : 1)/gamma-Al2O3, 10Ni/gamma-Al2O3, and Raney Ni were calculated as 0.41, 0.09, and 0.04 h(-1), respectively. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the existence of MnOx well dispersed on the gamma-Al2O3 support and its electron transfer effect with Ni particles on the surface of the support contributed to the high efficiency and better recyclability for the five-time reused 10NiMn(4 : 1)/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst.
Deactivation and Regeneration of Nano-Assembled Pd/C Catalyst for AMA Synthesis

Abstract:N-(4-Amino-2-methoxyphenyl)acetamide (AMA) is hydrogenated to form N-(4-nitro-2-methoxyphenyl)acetamide (NMA) over nano-assembled Pd/C catalyst in aqueous phase. The Pd/C catalyst exhibits high activity and selectivity, but it is not good at stability in the aqueous phase. The characterization results of XRD, BET, EDS and XPS for the used Pd/C catalysts indicate that the deactivation of Pd/C catalyst was caused by the absorption and coverage of product AMA on the surface of the catalyst, not caused by the Pd particle growth, Pd leaching or poisoned by S element. After the treatment of the deactivated Pd/C catalyst washed using acetic acid at 100 degrees C, the catalytic performances of the used Pd/C catalyst could be regenerated due to the removing product covered on the surface of Pd/C catalyst.

Abstract:This report provides a critical review on "Metal-Catalyzed Reduction of N-Nitrosodimethylamine with Hydrogen in Water", by Davie et al. N-nitrosodimethlamine (NDMA) is a contaminant in drinking and ground water which is difficult to remove by conventional physical methods, such as air stripping. Based on the reported robust capability of metal based powder shaped catalysts in hydrogen reduction, several monometallic and bimetallic catalyst are studied in this paper on the reduction of NDMA with hydrogen. Two kinds of kinetics, metal weight normalized and surface area normalized, are compared between each catalyst in terms of pseudo-first order reaction rate. Palladium, copper enhanced palladium and nickel are found to be very efficient in NDMA reduction, with half-lives on the order of hours per 10 mg/l catalyst metal. Preliminary LC-MS data and carbon balance showed no intermediates. Finally, a simple hydrogen and NMDA surface activated reaction mechanism is proposed by the author for palladium and nickel.

Highly Effective Electrocatalytic Reduction of N-nitrosodimethylamine on Ru/CNT Catalyst.

Abstract:N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a commonly identified carcinogenic and genotoxic pollutant in water. In this study, we prepared Ru catalysts supported on carbon nanotube (Ru/CNT) and studied the electrocatalytic reduction of N-nitrosamines on Ru/CNT electrode in a three-electrode system. The results show that Ru-based catalyst exhibits a high activity of 793.3 mu mol L-1 gCat- 1 h-1 for electrochemical reduction of NDMA. Reaction mechanism study discloses that the electrocatalytic reduction of NDMA is accomplished by both direct electron reduction and atomic H* mediated indirect reduction pathways. Further product analysis indicates that NDMA is finally reduced to dimethylamine (DMA) and ammonia. The reduction efficiency of NDMA strongly relies on cathode potential, initial NDMA concentration and solution pH. To verify the universality of Ru/CNT electrode, electrocatalytic reduction of three dialkyl N-nitrosamines with different alkyl groups was performed and Ru catalyst has high catalytic activities for the three N-nitrosamines, while the catalytic efficiency differs with their structures. Simultaneous electrochemical reduction of the three N-nitrosamines indicates that the reduction rates of N-nitrosamines follow the same order in the multiple-component system as that in the single component system. Catalyst recycling results demonstrate that after 5 consecutive recycling runs Ru/CNT electrode remains almost identical catalytic activity to the fresh catalyst, manifesting the high catalytic stability of Ru/CNT electrode.
Performance and mechanism of nickel hydroxide catalyzed reduction of N-nitrosodimethylamine by iron

Abstract:Since iron (Fe) was first proven to have a strong reduction ability, it has been successfully applied to remove pollutants from water. In this study, nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2), a catalyst commonly used in hydrogen evolution reactions, was added to improve the activity of Fe to remove N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). The results showed that with the increasing Ni(OH)2 dosages, the reactions accelerated. The NDMA removal rates increased when the pH value was 6 or 7. Further, when the dissolved oxygen concentration was in the range of 0–12.0 mg∙L−1, it had little effect on the Fe/Ni(OH)2 system, and all the reactions obeyed pseudo-first-order kinetics. 1,1-dimethylhydrazine and dimethylamine were formed during NDMA degradation. The capture of active substances and electron spin resonance method confirmed that the main active species were active hydrogen atoms, which participated in the removal of NDMA. Ni(OH)2 acting as a catalyst was confirmed using wide-angle X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Ni2+ dissolution. Further, catalytic hydrogenation was proposed as the main removal mechanism as Ni(OH)2 promotes the corrosion of Fe and dissociation of water, thereby generating more active hydrogen atoms. In addition, Ni(OH)2 may activate both Fe and NDMA. This technique could be employed as an alternative for NDMA reduction and expand the application field of Ni(OH)2.

Abstract:Herein we have identified an optimal catalyst, Pd1Ag1.7, for the tandem reductive amination between nitroarenes and aldehydes (selectivity > 93%). Key to the success is the ability to control the compositions of the investigational Pd1-xAgx (x = 0-1) catalysts, as well as the clear composition dependent activity/selectivity trend observed in this study. This catalyst features a wide substrate scope, excellent recyclability, activity and selectivity under ambient conditions.

Abstract:A series of Pd-ZnO/TiO2, Pd/TiO2, and Pd/ZnO catalysts were synthesized and investigated for N-methylation of N-methylaniline (MA) to N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) with CO2 and H2. A high performance was observed with a Pd-ZnO/TiO2 catalyst, with 99.9% DMA selectivity at 94% MA conversion. By contrast, both Pd/TiO2 and Pd/ZnO were less active and/or selective. The catalytic performance of Pd-ZnO/TiO2 largely depended on reduction temperature and ZnO loading. The rates for MA conversion (rateMA) and DMA production (rateDMA) increased linearly with the amount of PdZn alloy formed. The reaction was likely to take place via intermediates of N-methylformanilide (MFA) and formate. Formate was produced through the reduction of CO2 with H2 as confirmed by in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and then added to MA producing MFA and finally MFA was subsequently adsorbed and hydrogenated to DMA. Abstract:In this work, a series of amine-modified ZrSBA-15-supported PtPd bimetallic catalysts with different Pt/Pd ratios were prepared and characterized by a variety of means. Introducing amino groups on the surface of ZrSBA-15 is beneficial for achieving high dispersion of PtPd nanoparticles (NPs) and can effectively prevent the overgrowth of PtPd NPs during the preparation process. The resulting hybrid catalysts exhibit very high catalytic activity and stability for H-2 generation from aqueous ammonia borane (AB) and can also efficiently catalyze the reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol using AB as the hydrogen source. Among them, the catalyst with the Pt/Pd ratio of 85/15 shows the highest activity for AB dehydrogenation under ambient condition, whereas the catalyst with the Pt/Pd ratio of 50/50 exhibits the highest efficiency for the reduction of p-nitrophenol with AB. These results suggest that highly efficient interface active sites could be constructed by optimizing the composition of bimetallic PtPd NPs and changing the chemical surrounding of mesoporous ZrSBA-15, which demonstrate dehydrogenation and p-nitrophenol reduction. effective synergistic catalysis for AB dehydrogenation and p-nitrophenol reduction.
Supported Bimetallic AuRh/γ-Al2O3 Nanocatalyst for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO by Propylene

Abstract:A new method entitled Ultrasound-assisted Membrane Reduction (UAMR) was developed to prepare highly dispersed monometallic Rh/γ-Al2O3 and bimetallic AuRh/γ-Al2O3 catalysts. In this process, the reductant (NaBH4) solution is infiltrated through ceramic membrane tubes to a flowing suspension mixture of noble metal precursors and γ-Al2O3, and then the noble metal ions were reduced and deposited on the γ-Al2O3 to form nanoparticles or clusters on the surface of the carrier. The smaller noble metal nanoparticles (∼5nm) and higher activity for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO by propylene at low temperature were obtained over the catalysts prepared by the new method, compared to the catalysts prepared by conventional impregnation method. The AuRh/γ-Al2O3 catalyst with 0.33wt% Au and 0.17wt% Rh (MRh:MAu=1:1) loading exhibited higher propylene and NO conversions but lower NO conversion to N2 than 0.5wt% Rh/γ-Al2O3 catalyst, both of which were fabricated by the new preparation process. The stronger NO adsorption capability and formation of surface nitrates were validated over bimetallic AuRh/γ-Al2O3 catalysts in NO-TPD experiment. The synergistic effect of bimetallic system could improve the performance of SCR of NO and reduce the cost for platinum group metals based catalysts.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of supported heterogeneous catalysts is mainly dependent on their constitutive components including active species and supports. Therefore, the design and development of effective catalysts with synergistic enhanced effect between active sites and supports is of great significance. A facile in situ reduction approach to prepare amine-functionalized silica nanotubes (ASNTs)-supported Pd (ASNTs@Pd) composite catalyst is demonstrated in this article. Benefiting from the intrinsic physical and chemical properties of the ASNTs support and deposited Pd nanoparticles (NPs), the as-prepared ASNTs@Pd catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activity, stability, and reusability toward nitroarene reduction reactions. Abstract:Catalytic reduction of toxic 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol over magnetically recoverable nanocatalysts has attracted much attention. Herein, we report a Ni-Pd/NrGO catalyst through the growth of Ni-Pd nanodimers (NDs) on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (NrGO). The Ni-Pd NDs show a heterogeneous nanostructure with Ni and Pd subparts contacting with each other, remarkably different from the frequently-observed core/shell nanoparticles (NPs) or nanoalloy. The formation of Ni-Pd NDs follows an initial deposition of Pd NPs on the graphene and in-situ catalytic generation of Ni subparts over the newly-generated Pd NPs. The resulting Ni-Pd/NrGO exhibits a superior catalytic activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol at room temperature with a high rate constant (3400s-1g-1) and a low activated energy (29.1kJmol-1) as compared to unsupported Ni-Pd NDs and supported monometallic catalysts. The conversion rate of 4-NP is calculated to be 99.5% and the percent yield (%) of 4-AP is as high as 99.1%. A synergistic catalysis mechanism is rationally proposed, which is ascribed to the electronic modification of Ni-Pd metals due to the strong metal/support interaction (SMSI) effect as well as the electron transfer between Ni and Pd. The hybrid catalyst shows soft ferromagnetic properties and can be magnetically separated and recycled without obvious loss of activity.

Abstract:Canadian Journal of Chemistry, Ahead of Print. Recently, nanomaterials with layered double hydroxide (LDH) cores have been the subject of intense research regarding their promising applications in organic synthesis. In this study, nitrobenzene reduction is investigated by designing and synthesizing a novel LDH-based heterogeneous catalyst containing a nickel-1,2-phenylenediamine complex. The Cu–Zn–Al LDH was functionalized with copolymer bearing a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) linkage that makes it suitable for grafting with 1,2-phenylenediamine. Overall, the synthesized LDH@MPS-GMA-PDA-Ni was found to be a highly efficient heterogeneous nanocatalyst that can catalyze nitroarene reduction with high yields under mild conditions.

Abstract:The influencing factors, products and mechanism of N -nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) reduction by zinc (Zn) in the presence of transition-metal ions (Mn 2+ , Co 2+ and Ni 2+ ), were investigated. The NDMA removal by Zn was significantly improved by them, and the promoting effect of Co 2+ and Ni 2+ were better than Mn 2+ . With the decrease of pH values and dissolved oxygen concentrations, the removals of NDMA were enhanced in all reaction systems. NDMA was mainly reduced to unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) in Zn and Zn/Mn 2+ systems. It was mainly reduced to dimethylamine (DMA) and ammonium (NH 4 + ) in Zn/Co 2+ and Zn/Ni 2+ systems. There were undetected products in all reaction systems. Catalytic hydrogenation was the main mechanism, and active hydrogen atom was the main active species. The presence of Mn 2+ , Co 2+ and Ni 2+ promoted the corrosion of Zn and changed the surface morphology of Zn. The formation of type I film on Zn surface was promoted in the presence of Co 2+ and Ni 2+ , which was conducive to the continuous corrosion of Zn and hydrogen generation. While type II film which would inhibit the corrosion of Zn formed on Zn surface in the presence of Mn 2+ . MnO 2 , Co 3 O 4 and Ni(OH) 2 were formed in Zn/Mn 2+ , Zn/Co 2+ and Zn/Ni 2+ systems, respectively. They would facilitate more generation of active hydrogen atoms.

Abstract:A catalyst that Pt nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on hollow silica nanospheres modified by polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers was synthesized (marked as hollow SiO2–G1–Pt). The hollow silica nanospheres were facilely prepared through etching the template of ZnO nanospheres. Pt NPs exhibited small size (around 2.32 nm) and uniform dispersion owing to the unique physicochemical property of the dendrimers. The catalytic performances of as-prepared catalysts were evaluated with the reduction of p-nitrophenol by NaBH4. The results showed the fabricated hollow SiO2–G1–Pt catalyst exhibited the excellent catalytic activity, which was higher than that of Pt NPs deposited on hollow silica without grafting of PAMAM dendrimers and Pt NPs loaded on PAMAM-modified ZnO@SiO2. Moreover, the results of recycling experiments revealed hollow SiO2–G1–Pt possessed convenient separation and the similar catalytic performance without visible reduction after five runs.
Facile Synthesis of Pd-based Bimetallic Nanocrystals and Their Application As Catalysts for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Abstract:We employed an efficient and facile route to synthesise monodisperse Pd-based bimetallic nanocrystals (MPd: M = Cu, Co and Ni) via a controlled co-reduction of Pd(ii) chloride and M(ii) nitrate at 200-230 °C in the presence of oleylamine (OAm). These monodisperse Pd-based nanocrystals have small dimensions, unique structures and homogeneous morphology, thus exhibit efficient catalytic activities for methanol oxidation in alkaline solution, which is much better than commercial Pd/C with same amount of palladium. The catalytic activities of these nanocrystals followed the order of NiPd/C > CoPd/C > CuPd/C > commercial Pd/C, due to the different synergistic effects. Our results show that these Pd-based bimetallic nanocrystals can be promising as practical catalysts for methanol oxidation reactions and other catalytic reactions in further investigations.

Abstract:Titania supported palladium–copper bimetallic catalysts (Pd–Cu/TiO2) are prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction method and then applied in the catalytic reduction of nitrite ions in drinking water. The nitrite conversion and selectivity to N2 influenced by metal molar ratio (Pd:Cu), H2 flow rate, CO2 flow rate, pH value of solution and reaction temperature are also discussed in detail with physical characterizations methods such as XPS, XRD, in situ FT-IR. It is discovered that bimetallic Pd–Cu/TiO2 catalyst has higher activity than monometallic Pd/TiO2 catalyst in the catalytic reduction of nitrite ions and a mechanism is proposed to explain this promoting effect of bimetallic catalyst in this paper.

Abstract:A new organic support-inorganic bimetals hybrid D201-Fe-Pd prepared by a three-step method including ion exchanging in turn with precursor FeCl4- and PdCl42- anions, and NaBH4 chemical reduction was applied for nitrate chemical reduction in solution. The amount of the second metal Pd can be tuned by changing the concentration of precursor PdCl4- in solution. The metal iron was discovered to be uniformly distributed in the spherical polymeric beads, but element Pd distributed more in the peripheral region of the spherical polymeric beads. The diameter of zero valent iron and palladium nanoparticles, which dispersed well without aggregation, were smaller than 5 nm. The hybrid D201-Fe-Pd with 2.724% of Pd and Fe mass ratio obtained the highest nitrate reduction activity, which was 0.85 times higher than that of hybrid without Pd. The bimetal hybrids obviously exhibited higher k(obs) than nZVI hybrid in kinetics, which confirmed the electron transfer function of Pd. As reaching equilibrium, none of Fe was detected in the aqueous solution, while the highest leaching amount of Pd in total loaded were 19.83%. From the recovery rate of nitrate, nitrite and ammonium both in aqueous solution and support solid phase ranging from 94.46% to 98.11% in nitrogen balance, it can not be concluded that the addition of Pd improve gas production in nitrate reduction.

Abstract:Titania-supported palladium–copper bimetallic catalysts (Pd–Cu/P25) are prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction method and then applied in liquid-phase catalytic reduction of nitrite ions (NO2-). Compared with the conventional impregnation method, which usually needs a post-thermal reduction procedure to eliminate the introduced anions, liquid-phase chemical reduction at ambient temperature was proved to inhibit the aggregation of metal active components by means of TEM and DSC analysis in this work, and the catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity. The conversion of nitrite reached a high level (1×10-4 mol min-1 gcat-1) and is about 14 times than that reported recently. The influences on the conversion of NO2- by support materials and the molar ratio of palladium to copper are also investigated, and further, the reaction mechanisms are discussed according to the characterization results of XPS and in situ FT-IR.

Abstract:Monodisperse bimetallic nanocatalysts homogeneously supported on mesoporous silica nanoparticles are demonstrated as highly active reducing catalysts for controlled nitrate transformation. For this, we finely controlled catalyst size, and composition based on new synthetic conditions. Specifically, atomic clusters of M reducing /Cu nanocatalysts (M reducing = Pd, Pt) were further grown by additional M reducing impregnation (M reducing /Cu/M reducing type). Reaction kinetics were observed to be affected by the ratio of M reducing to Cu, for which Pd−rich Pd/Cu/Pd nanocatalysts showed better performance than Cu−rich analogs. Product selectivity (ammonium vs. nitrogen) was highly correlated with the morphology of nanocatalysts, where nitrogen gas (dominant) selectivity was observed with an increase in Pd particle size. Lastly, MSN−Pd/Cu/Pd catalyst are highly stable with no catalyst deterioration over the multiple reactions (10 times) with the consistent high reaction rates and N 2 selectivity. Overall, this research furthers our understanding of catalytic nitrate reduction as a function of precisely controlled nanocatalyst(s) size and composition.
