Value of 18F-FDG coincidence SPECT in diagnosis of recurrent bone and soft-tissue tumors

Abstract:Objective To assess the value of 18 F-FDG coincidence SPECT in the detection of local recurrences and distant metastasis of bone and soft tissue tumors. Methods Thirty-two 18 F-FDG coincidence SPECT studies from 18 patients with clinically suspected of local recurrence and/or distant metastasis of bone and soft-tissue tumors were performed. The results were correlated with histopathology findings on surgical specimens (in 15 studies) or clinical follow-up data (in 17 studies). Results On a study-based analysis, 18 F-FDG coincidence SPECT had a sensitivity of 95% (19/20), a specificity of 83% (10/12) and an accuracy of 91% (29/32). The positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 90% (19/21) and 91% (10/11), respectively. Thirteen recurrent foci detected by 18 F-FDG coincidence SPECT received surgical management. Conclusion 18 F-FDG coincidence SPECT is high sensitive and specific to detect local and distant recurrences of bone and soft-tissue tumors.
