Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), defined as those technologies that utilize the hydroxyl radical (·OH) for oxidation, have received increasing attention in the research and development of wastewater treatment technologies in the last decades. These processes have been applied successfully for the removal or degradation of toxic pollutants or used as pretreatment to convert recalcitrant pollutants into biodegradable compounds that can then be treated by conventional biological methods. The efficacy of AOPs depends on the generation of reactive free radicals, the most important of which is the hydroxyl radical (·OH). The authors summarize the formation reactions of ·OH and the mechanisms of pollutants degradation. They cover six types of advanced oxidation processes, including radiation, photolysis and photocatalysis, sonolysis, electrochemical oxidation technologies, Fenton-based reactions, and ozone-based processes. Controversial issues in pollutants degradation mechanism were discussed. They review the application of these processes for removal of different kinds of toxic pollutants from wastewater, including aromatic compounds, dyes, pharmaceutical compounds, and pesticides, with emphasis on the parameters assessed, removal effectiveness, and the degradation mechanisms of pollutants. The authors discuss issues associated with practical wastewater treatment and offer suggestions for the direction for future researches.

Abstract:The photo-Fenton oxidation, which can treat high concentration and toxic organic wastewater effectively, was a kind of effective technique. This paper described the mechanism and effects of photo-Fenton oxidation. The plenty of·OH (hydroxyl radicals) was produced in photo-Fenton oxidation. The·OH was reactive and nonselective. Its oxidizing potential was 2.8V, having strong oxidation ability, and most of organics were redox. Moreover, the further studies were presented. The virtues were easy manipulation and not contamination. The Fe3+ might react with OH, and Fe(OH)3 product was harmless to environment. The defect was that reaction was carried under pH≤3. The big wastage of H2O2 resulted in processing high-cost and so on.

Abstract:Many organic pollutants are chemically stable and thus cannot be degraded by classical wastewater treatment techniques. To solve this issue, ozone-based advanced oxidation processes using hydroxyl radicals with strong oxidation ability have been recently developed. Here we review hydroxyl radicals in ozone-based advanced oxidation processes with focus on reaction characteristics, generation, detection, and quantitation of hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals are generated using ozone micro/nano-bubbles, peroxymonosulfate-activated ozone, ozone coupled with Fenton oxidation, electro-peroxone, or catalytic ozonation. Hydroxyl radicals are detected by electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching experiments. We also present applications in wastewater treatment and reactor design. Ozone-based advanced oxidation combines direct oxidation by ozone molecules and indirect oxidation by reactive oxygen species; regulating these two pathways remains challenging. The generation of hydroxyl radicals depends on the environmental matrix and on the chemical structure, properties, and ozone reactivity of contaminants. Chain reactions among reactive oxygen species induce contradictions during the analysis of results obtained by electron paramagnetic resonance, quenching techniques, and probe methods.
Determination of hydroxyl radical in organic wastewater treatment by electrochemical oxidation

Abstract:A method of detection hydroxyl radical (·OH) produced by electrochemical oxidation in organic wastewater treatment was developed. Benzoic acid with weak fluorescence may reacted with hydroxyl radical to produce 3-hydroxybenzonic acid with intense fluorescence, whose characteristic fluorescence excitation and emission wavelength were at 305 nm and 410 nm. The 3-hydroxybenzonic acid was separated from electrochemical oxidation system by HPLC. Two major hydroxylated products were quantified corresponding to 3-hydroxybenzonic, 4-hydroxybenzonic acid. Therefore the quantity of hydroxyl radical in the reactive system should be primarily calculated. The optimal experimental program was obtained by studying the determination conditions, which were benzoic acid of 1.0 mmol/L, electrolysis time of 60 min, current density of 39 mA/cm2, supporting electrolyte (Na:SO4) of 0.02 mol/L, and the low rate of sparged-air of 25 mL/s. The results show that this method is stable, simple and rapid and can be used as a convenient method for the determination of hydroxyl radical.

Abstract:Fenton oxidation is an advanced treatment process for printing and dyeing wastewater. The process conditions（pH value, the dosage of ferrous sulfate, the dosage of hydrogen peroxide, reaction time, etc.） of Fenton oxidation were used to optimize for the treatment of dyeing wastewater,and the cost was calculated for optimization. The results showed that under the process conditions of pH=3.5, ferrous sulfate dosage of 0.15 g/L, 30%hydrogen peroxide dosage of 0.26 ml/L, 30% sodium hydroxide dosage of 0.24 ml/L, and PAM dosage of 1 mg/L, the effluent CODcr average value was 22.8 mg/L, the COD removal rate was 67.5%, and the lowest reagent cost was 0.98 yuan/m~3.

The present research and application of oxidants, including chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, potassium permanganate, were analyzed and treatment processes such as ozone combining with BAC, ozone cooperating with hydrogen peroxide and ozone with plus radiation oxidation were discussed. Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes(AOPs),as new technologies in water treatment fields,are very popular in recent years.Especially,AOPS have the advantage in the treatment of difficultly degraded organics.The research process and mechanism for water treatment by advanced oxidation processes,such as Fenton and technologies on Fenton,photochemical oxidation and photocatalysis oxidation,ozone oxidation,electrochemical oxidation,wet air oxidation and catalytic wet air oxidation,supercritical water oxidation and supercritical catalytic water oxidation,are summarized in this paper.How to produce more ·OH radicals is one of the most radical issues in AOPs.Comprehensive analysis manifests that researching the oxidants of higher cost-efficient as well as the catalysts of more catalytic activity and sustainable are the main development trend in AOPs.In addition,it is necessary that technologies which combine AOPs and sound,light,electricity,magnet and so on will further not only enhance wastewater removal but also expand its space for research in wastewater fields.

Abstract:Dye waste-water is one of the main sources of water environmental pollution, which belongs to the characteristics of refractory organic waste-water with large chroma, high concentration, large water quality difference, complex composition and large history of pH change. Physical, chemical and biological methods are the main methods on the treatment of dyeing waste-water. The advanced oxidation technology based on hydroxyl radical (•OH) has the advantages of strong oxidation, low selectivity and high elector-philicity. There are mainly seven ways to produce hydroxyl radical (•OH): Fenton oxidation, photo-catalytic oxidation, ozone oxidation, electrocute-chemical oxidation, ultrasonic oxidation, wet oxidation and super-critical water oxidation. These methods have significant effect on dyeing waste-water treatment.

Abstract:The electro-Fenton (EF) process is an advanced oxidation technology with significant potential; however, it is limited by two steps: generation and activation of H2O2. In contrast to the production of H2O2 via the electrochemical two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the electrochemical three-electron (3e-) ORR can directly activate molecular oxygen to yield the hydroxyl radical (⋅OH), thus breaking through the conceptual and operational limitations of the traditional EF reaction. Therefore, the 3e- ORR is a vital process for efficiently producing ⋅OH in situ, thus charting a new path toward the development of green water-treatment technologies. This review summarizes the characteristics and mechanisms of the 3e- ORR, focusing on the basic principles and latest progress in the in situ generation and efficient utilization of ⋅OH through the modulation of the reaction pathway, shedding light on the rational design of 3e- ORR catalysts, mechanistic exploration, and practical applications for water treatment. Finally, the future developments and challenges of efficient, stable, and large-scale utilization of ⋅OH are discussed based on achieving optimal 3e- ORR regulation and the potential to combine it with other technologies.

Abstract:Anodic oxidation has emerged as a promising treatment technology for the removal of a broad range of organic pollutants from wastewaters. Hydroxyl radicals are the primary species generated in anodic oxidation systems to oxidize organics. In this review, the methods of identifying hydroxyl radicals and the existing debates and misunderstandings regarding the validity of experimental results are discussed. Consideration is given to the methods of quantification of hydroxyl radicals in anodic oxidation systems with particular attention to approaches used to compare the electrochemical performance of different anodes. In addition, we describe recent progress in understanding the mechanisms of hydroxyl radical generation at the surface of most commonly used anodes and the utilization of hydroxyl radical in typical electrochemical reactors. This review shows that the key challenges facing anodic oxidation technology are related to i) the elimination of mistakes in identifying hydroxyl radicals, ii) the establishment of an effective hydroxyl radical quantification method, iii) the development of cost effective anode materials with high corrosion resistance and high electrochemical activity and iv) the optimization of electrochemical reactor design to maximise the utilization efficiency of hydroxyl radicals.

Including all of the AOPs, most production of them and most mechanisms of degradation or mineralization was the hydroxide radicals (circle OH). In this review the applications of various AOPs, AOPs based on photo catalysis, electrical catalysis, Fenton reagent[H2O2/Fe(II)], ozonic processes and so on were collected and packed up according to the treatment of different pollutants such as organ halogens, organic pesticides, surfactants, coloring matters, and other organics compounds. The advantages and disadvantages of these AOPs have also been discussed.

Abstract:In comparison with traditional bubbles, micro-nano bubbles (MNBs) could generate hydroxyl radical(·OH) and owned advantages of large specific surface area, high gas-liquid mass transfer efficiency, high zeta potential at the bubble interface, easy self-pressurization and collapse, and they have been widely used in environmental engineering. This paper summarized the formation mechanisms of the ·OH generated by MNBs and its influencing factors. The application of the produced ·OH in water and wastewater treatment was briefly introduced. In addition, the development direction and application of MNBs are prospected, which are promising to provide reference for the theoretical research and practical application of micro nano bubble technology.

Abstract:Fenton processes based on the reaction between Fe2+ and H2O2 to produce hydroxyl radicals, have been widely studied and applied for the degradation of toxic organic contaminants in wastewater due to its high efficiency, mild condition and simple operation. However, H2O2 is usually added by bulk feeding, which suffers from the potential risks during the storage and transportation of H2O2 as well as its low utilization efficiency. Therefore, Fenton/Fenton-like processes with in-situ production of H2O2 have received increasing attention, in which H2O2 was in-situ produced through O2 activation, then decomposed into hydroxyl radicals by Fenton catalysts. In this review, the in situ production of H2O2 for Fenton oxidation was introduced, the strategies for activation of O2 to generate H2O2 were summarized, including chemical reduction, electro-catalysis and photo-catalysis, the influencing factors and the mechanisms of the in situ production and utilization of H2O2 in various Fenton/Fenton-like processes were analyzed and discussed, and the applications of these processes for the degradation of toxic organic contaminants were summarized. This review will deepen the understanding of the tacit cooperation between the in situ production and utilization of H2O2 in Fenton process, and provide the further insight into this promising process for degradation of emerging contaminants in industrial wastewater.
