Abstract:Fenton reaction is a powerful technology for pollutants’ removal from water. However, the cost of H2O2 becomes one of the major stumbling blocks in its application. H2O2 has a relatively high price and is easily decomposed during transportation and use; therefore, in situ synthesis of H2O2 could improve economic benefits effectively. In this study, a Fe/Ni/Pd ternary metal-doped graphitic carbon nitride (FeNi-Pd@CN) is prepared, and in situ H2O2 generation using formic acid as hydrogen sources for organics removal was proved. The catalyst is advantageous, as H2O2 could accumulate to 1.69 mmol/L in 150 min when pumping air rather than oxygen gases in other studies. Furthermore, 92.0% of Acid Red 73 (200 mg/L) and 93.2% of tetracycline hydrochloride (10 mg/L) could be removed in 150 min without any pH adjustment. Characterization results show that the catalyst has good stability in metal leaching and reuse tests. It is proved that •OH and •O2− are the main reactive oxygen species, and a synergistic effect between Fe and Ni exists that enhances ROS generation for organics degradation. This work offers a promising method to remove refectory organic contaminants from industrial wastewater.

The conventional Fenton, Peroxone and Electro-Oxidation (EO) processes were enhanced using H2O2 generation cathode to execute Electro-Fenton, Electro-Peroxone and ORR-EO processes. Abstract:Electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via two-electron pathway is a promising approach to decentralized and on-site hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production beyond the traditional anthraquinone process. In recent years, electrochemical H2O2 production in acidic media has attracted increasing attention owing to its stronger oxidizing capacity, superior stability, and higher compatibility with various applications. Here, recent advances of H2O2 electrosynthesis in acidic media are summarized. Specifically, fundamental aspects of two-electron ORR mechanism are firstly presented with an emphasis on the pH effect on catalytic performance. Major categories of promising electrocatalysts are then reviewed, including noble-metal-based materials, non-noble-metal single-atom catalysts, non-noble-metal compounds, and metal-free carbon-based materials. The innovative development of electrochemical devices and in situ/on-site application of electrogenerated H2O2 are also highlighted to bridge the gap between laboratory-scale fundamental research and practically relevant H2O2 electrosynthesis. Finally, critical perspectives on present challenges and promising opportunities for future research are provided.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)is an environmentally friendly oxidant that has been widely used in water treatment,medical disinfection,chemical synthesis,and other industrial applications.However,traditional methods used to produce H2O2 consume significant amounts of energy and generate hazardous by-products,which limit their scope.On-site and on-demand electrocatalytic two-electron water oxidation chemistry is an attractive option for directly producing H2O2 from water;it also avoids the hazardous anthraquinone method,has fewer transportation costs and risks,and is integratable with renewable electricity.Despite these advantages,the two-electron water oxidation reaction(2e-WOR)still suffers from poor selectivity and activity due to a lack of mechanistic,material-design,and reactor-engineering understanding.This study summarizes recent advances in H2O2 electrosynthesis technology using the 2e-WOR.The catalytic 2e-WOR mechanism is first introduced with a focus on selectivity,activity,and stability.This reaction involves the electrocatalytic oxidation of water to produce H2O2,which can be further oxidized to O2.Selectivity is influenced by a variety of factors,including the electrocatalyst,pH,and electrolyte.Various quantitative H2O2 methods are discussed along with in situ characterization studies into the 2e-WOR aimed at better understanding the reaction process.Such methods include in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy.Researchers are able to identify reaction intermediates and understand reaction mechanisms better using these techniques,thereby providing guidance for the design of more efficient electrocatalysts.In turn,various strategies for preparing high-performance electrocatalysts are summarized,including defect,doping,facet,and interfacial engineering methods.Mechanism-guided multiscale materials engineering can improve the activities and selectivities of electrocatalysts,thereby increasing H2O2 yields.In addition,device-level engineering,especially in relation to reactor and system innovations,is emphasized,which is important for improving reaction efficiency and reducing the cost of the 2e-WOR.Finally,current challenges and future opportunities in the 2e-WOR H2O2 electrosynthesis field are discussed.More effort directed at improving reaction selectivity,activity,and durability is required,along with exploring suitable application scenarios.The 2e-WOR is expected to become a more sustainable and efficient method for producing H2O2 facilitated by continuing progress in the materials science and electrochemical technology fields.

Abstract:Fenton processes based on the reaction between Fe2+ and H2O2 to produce hydroxyl radicals, have been widely studied and applied for the degradation of toxic organic contaminants in wastewater due to its high efficiency, mild condition and simple operation. However, H2O2 is usually added by bulk feeding, which suffers from the potential risks during the storage and transportation of H2O2 as well as its low utilization efficiency. Therefore, Fenton/Fenton-like processes with in-situ production of H2O2 have received increasing attention, in which H2O2 was in-situ produced through O2 activation, then decomposed into hydroxyl radicals by Fenton catalysts. In this review, the in situ production of H2O2 for Fenton oxidation was introduced, the strategies for activation of O2 to generate H2O2 were summarized, including chemical reduction, electro-catalysis and photo-catalysis, the influencing factors and the mechanisms of the in situ production and utilization of H2O2 in various Fenton/Fenton-like processes were analyzed and discussed, and the applications of these processes for the degradation of toxic organic contaminants were summarized. This review will deepen the understanding of the tacit cooperation between the in situ production and utilization of H2O2 in Fenton process, and provide the further insight into this promising process for degradation of emerging contaminants in industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot) can hydroxylate or dehydrogenate organics without forming extra products and is thereby expediently applied in extensive domains. Although it can be efficiently produced through single-electron transfer from transitionmetal-containing activators to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), narrow applicable pH range, strict activator/H2O2 ratio requirement, and byproducts that are formed in the mixture with the background matrix necessitate the need for additional energy-intensive up/ downstream treatments. Here, we show a green Fenton process in an electrochemical cell, where the electro-generated atomic H* on a Pd/graphite cathode enables the efficient conversion of H2O2 into (OH)-O-center dot and subsequent degradation of organic pollutants (80% efficiency). Operando liquid time-of-fight secondary ion mass spectrometry verified that H2O2 activation takes place through a transition state of the Pd-H*-H2O2 adduct with a low reaction energy barrier of 0.92 eV, whereby the lone electron in atomic H* can readily cleave the peroxide bridge, with (OH)-O-center dot and H2O as products (Delta G(r) = -1.344 eV). Using H+ or H2O as the resource, we demonstrate that the well-directed output of H* determines the pH-independent production of (OH)-O-center dot for stable conversion of organic contaminants in wider pH ranges (3-12). The research pioneers a novel path for eliminating the restrictions that are historically challenging in the traditional Fenton process.

Abstract:The current research status on the (photo)electrocatalysts and (photo)electrochemical devices for on‐site H2O2 production are reviewed. The pros and cons of the four types of (photo)electrochemical device designs are emphasized and discussed in detail. Low‐cost and on‐site H2O2 production is desirable for industrial and civilian usage. (Photo)electrochemical H2O2 production is proposed to be a safer, greener, and cheaper strategy for on‐site H2O2 production as compared to the conventional anthraquinone process and the direct thermal synthesis. However, the efficiency, selectivity, and durability of the (photo)electrochemical H2O2 production devices are still not satisfactory. Therefore, there is an urgent need to revisit the (photo)electrocatalyst and device designs for (photo)electrochemical on‐site H2O2 production, thus to rationalize the research thoughts and provide valuable guidance. This review comprehensively summarizes and discusses the mechanism of two‐electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e− ORR) and two‐electron water oxidation reaction (2e− WOR) for H2O2 production, and the current research status on the (photo)electrocatalysts and (photo)electrochemical devices. In particular, the pros and cons of the four types of (photo)electrochemical device designs, which are Type I (2e− ORR + oxygen evolution reaction), Type II (2e− ORR + hydrogen oxidation reaction), Type III (2e− WOR + hydrogen evolution reaction) and Type IV (2e− WOR + 2e− ORR), are discussed in detail. Finally, a practical perspective on the future research directions for the on‐site (photo)electrochemical H2O2 production based on the technical challenges of this technique is provided.

Stochastic Small-Signal Stability Analysis of Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems

Abstract:As the penetration level of photovoltaic (PV) generators into the grid is rapidly increasing, the effect of a variable PV power output on the stability of power systems cannot be ignored. Due to the stochastic characteristics of PV power generation, deterministic analysis approaches are not able to fully reveal the impact of high-level PV integration. This paper investigates the impact of the stochastic PV generation on the dynamic stability of grid-connected PV systems by using a probabilistic small-signal analysis approach. The sensitivity of the critical eigenvalue to the variation of solar irradiance is obtained. With the knowledge of the sensitivity relationship and the statistics of solar irradiance data, the probability density function (pdf) of the real part of the critical eigenvalue is approximated by Gram-Charlier expansion. This pdf is then used to calculate the probability of the stochastic small-signal stability of a power system. The impacts of important system parameters on the stochastic stability of the system are also analyzed. It has been found that these system parameters can significantly affect the stochastic stability of the system. Results of Monte Carlo and time-domain simulations of the grid-connected system verify the effectiveness of the proposed stochastic stability analysis method.

Abstract:Electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has recently gained traction as a green alternative to the unsustainable anthraquinone auto-oxidation process and the high-risk direct synthesis route. While the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e– ORR) toward H2O2 has been covered extensively in the literature, the unorthodox two-electron water oxidation reaction (2e– WOR) remains far less popular, due to the thermodynamic unfavorability of the pathway. Nonetheless, the 2e– WOR constitutes a coveted procedure as it enables the electro-generation of H2O2 solely from water. A thorough understanding of the reaction mechanism, including all intermediates and competing reaction routes, is essential for the fabrication of electrocatalysts, and assembly of electrochemical reactors, capable of greater H2O2 production rates with an optimal efficiency. This review focuses exclusively on the 2e– WOR to electrochemically produce H2O2. A summary of all prevailing water oxidation mechanisms is presented, supported with computational and experimental data, and key challenges and limitations that require attention are addressed.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Fast Generation of Hydroxyl Radicals by Rerouting the Electron Transfer Pathway via Constructed Chemical Channels during the Photo-Electro-Reduction of Oxygen

Abstract:A strategy for the fast generation of hydroxyl radicals (HO·) via photo-electro-reduction of oxygen by rerouting the electron transfer pathway was proposed. The rate-determining step of HO· production is the formation of H2O2 and the simultaneous reduction of H2O2. Engineering of F-TiO2 with single atom Pd bonded with four F and two O atoms favored the electrocatalytic 2-electron oxygen reduction to H2O2 with as high as 99% selectivity, while the additional channel bond HO-O···Pd-F-TiO2 facilitates the photogenerated electron transfer from the conduction band to single atom Pd to reduce Pd···O-OH to HO·. The optimized HO· production rate is 9.18 μ mol L-1 min-1, which is 2.6-52.5 times higher than that in traditional advanced oxidation processes. In the application of wastewater treatment, this proposed photoelectrocatalytic oxygen reduction method, respectively, shows fast kinetics of 0.324 and 0.175 min-1 for removing bisphenol A and acetaminophen. Around 93.2% total organic carbon and 99.3% acute toxicity removal were achieved. Additionally, the degradation efficiency was less affected by the water source and pH value because of the evitable usage of metallic active sites. This work represents a fundamental investigation on the generation rate of HO·, which would pave the way for the future development of photoelectrocatalytic technologies for water purification.

High-Efficiency Electrocatalysis of Molecular Oxygen toward Hydroxyl Radicals Enabled by an Atomically Dispersed Iron Catalyst

Abstract:Fenton catalysis represents the promising technology to produce super-active ·OH for tackling severe water environment pollution issues, whereas it suffers from low atomic efficiency, poor pH adaptability, and catalyst non-reusability in a homogeneous or heterogeneous system. Here, single-atom iron catalysis is creatively introduced to drive electrochemical ·OH evolution utilizing earth-abundant oxygen and water as raw materials. The atomically dispersed iron settled by defective three-dimensional porous carbon (AD-Fe/3DPC) with unique C, Cl unsaturated coordination can efficiently tune the multi-electron oxygen reduction process, enabling O2-to-·OH conversion. The mass activity in ·OH production by AD-Fe/3DPC is almost two-orders of magnitude higher as compared to that by nanoparticular iron oxide catalyst. Meanwhile, the AD-Fe/3DPC electro-Fenton system exhibits fast elimination of refractory toxic pollutants, surpassing nanoparticular iron oxides in kinetic rate by 59 times or homogeneous Fenton by 10 times under similar experimental conditions. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the remarkable enhanced mass activity of AD-Fe/3DPC in catalyzing O2 to ·OH is contributed by the synergistic effects of the maximized catalysis of atomically dispersed iron and the unique unsaturated coordination environment. The AD-Fe/3DPC catalytic system is demonstrated to be pH-universal, long-term stable, and well recyclable, truly satisfying flexible, sustainable, and green application of wastewater purification. Abstract:AbstractThe hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation via the electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under ambient conditions is emerging as an alternative and green strategy to the traditional energy‐intensive anthraquinone process and unsafe direct synthesis using H2 and O2. It enables on‐site and decentralized H2O2 production using air and renewable electricity for various applications. Currently, atomically dispersed single metal site catalysts have emerged as the most promising platinum group metal (PGM)‐free electrocatalysts for the ORR. Further tuning their central metal sites, coordination environments, and local structures can be highly active and selective for H2O2 production via the 2e− ORR. Herein, recent methodologies and achievements on developing single metal site catalysts for selective O2 to H2O2 reduction are summarized. Combined with theoretical computation and advanced characterization, a structure–property correlation to guide rational catalyst design with a favorable 2e− ORR process is aimed to provide. Due to the oxidative nature of H2O2 and the derived free radicals, catalyst stability and effective solutions to improve catalyst tolerance to H2O2 are emphasized. Transferring intrinsic catalyst properties to electrode performance for viable applications always remains a grand challenge. The key performance metrics and knowledge during the electrolyzer development are, therefore, highlighted.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) two-electron water-oxidation reaction is a promising route for renewable and on-site generation of H2O2 as an alternative to the traditional anthraquinone process. However, large overpotential, low product selectivity, and poor stability limit its practical applications of PEC producing H2O2. This review discusses the fundamental aspects of two-electron water oxidation toward H2O2 in a simple PEC device. It also presents the research background and all prevailing and recent breakthrough in the mechanisms of anodic H2O2 generation. Afterward, it comprehensively reviews the progress made so far in enhancing the Faradaic efficiency of H2O2 synthesis by tuning the thermodynamic energy barriers and reaction kinetics, facilitating the mass transfer of reactants and products, and stabilizing the products and catalytic surfaces. Finally, the critical challenges and opportunities for future development in this field are discussed. We believe that this review would stimulate further efforts to achieve highly efficient on-site H2O2 production and high-power-density fuel cells with H2O2 chemical utilization.

Abstract:Shifting electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via two-electron pathway becomes increasingly crucial as an alternative/green method for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation. Here, the development of 2e− ORR catalysts in recent years is reviewed, in aspects of reaction mechanism exploration, types of high-performance catalysts, factors to influence catalytic performance, and potential applications of 2e− ORR. Based on the previous theoretical and experimental studies, the underlying 2e− ORR catalytic mechanism is firstly unveiled, in aspect of reaction pathway, thermodynamic free energy diagram, limiting potential, and volcano plots. Then, various types of efficient catalysts for producing H2O2 via 2e− ORR pathway are summarized. Additionally, the catalytic active sites and factors to influence catalysts' performance, such as electronic structure, carbon defect, functional groups (O, N, B, S, F etc.), synergistic effect, and others (pH, pore structure, steric hindrance effect, etc.) are discussed. The H2O2 electrogeneration via 2e− ORR also has various potential applications in wastewater treatment, disinfection, organics degradation, and energy storage. Finally, potential future directions and prospects in 2e− ORR catalysts for electrochemically producing H2O2 are examined. These insights may help develop highly active/selective 2e− ORR catalysts and shape the potential application of this electrochemical H2O2 producing method.

Abstract:This review discusses a versatile photoelectrocatalysis strategy for raising up the green production of hydrogen peroxide with interrogation of reaction principles, engineering the catalytic reaction environment including via sacrificial agents and electrolytes, techniques including transient photoinduced voltage and transient photoinduced current, and reactors. H2O2 plays an irreplaceable role in many aspects of human society, such as paper bleaching, medical disinfection, wastewater treatment, organic synthesis, hydrometallurgy and the electronic industry. However, the unsustainability of the current industrial production process of traditional anthraquinone has a serious conflict with the green sustainable development. The photo/electrocatalytic H2O2 production from renewable energy has the advantages of being more economical, low‐carbon and green, and in line with the requirements of energy economy. These catalytic methods of green H2O2 production have played a demonstrative role in the development of many small molecules, contributing to a fundamental understanding of general catalysis and providing a scientific perspective for future new energy cycles. In this review, the authors aim to integrate the reaction process and mechanism of photocatalytic and electrocatalytic H2O2 production, summarize the development and application of photocatalytic and electrocatalytic H2O2 production in recent years, and assess the modern technologies promoted in the process of H2O2 production research, including the development of flux production equipment and reaction coproduction, etc. This review intends to provide a clear logic profile and new directions for the development of H2O2 production, and calls for more researchers to provide more insights into the development of this field.

The strong metal-support interactions induced electrocatalytic three-electron oxygen reduction to hydroxyl radicals for water treatment

Abstract:As a promising environmental remediation technology, the electro-Fenton (EF) process is mainly limited by the two rate-limiting steps, which are H2O2 generation and activation. The electrocatalytic three-electron oxygen reduction reaction (3e- ORR) can directly activate oxygen to hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which is expected to break through the rate-limiting steps of the EF process. However, limited success has been achieved in the design of 3e- ORR electrocatalysts. Herein, we propose Cu/CoSe2/C with the strong metal-support interactions to enhance the 3e- ORR process, exhibiting remarkable reactivity and stability for •OH generation. Both experiment and DFT calculation results reveal that CoSe2 is conducive to the generation of H2O2. Meanwhile, the metallic Cu can enhance the adsorption strength of *H2O2 intermediates and thus promotes the one-electron reduction to •OH. The Cu/CoSe2/C catalyst exhibits the electron-transfer number close to 3.0 during the ORR process, and exhibits the outstanding •OH generation performance, achieving a higher apparent rate constant (6.0 times faster) toward ciprofloxacin compared with its analogy without the SMSI effect. Our work represents that the SMSI effect endows Cu/CoSe2/C high activity and selectivity for •OH generation, providing a unique perspective for the design of a high-efficiency 3e- ORR catalyst.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent advances in two‐electron water oxidation reaction electrocatalysts for H2O2 production, including mechanistic studies, catalyst design strategies, and the impact of Three‐Phase Interface Engineering. It combines theoretical modeling and experimental studies to improve H2O2 production. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a versatile and zero‐emission material that is widely used in the industrial, domestic, and healthcare sectors. It is clear that it plays a critical role in advancing environmental sustainability, acting as a green energy source, and protecting human health. Conventional production techniques focused on anthraquinone oxidation, however, electrocatalytic synthesis has arisen as a means of utilizing renewable energy sources in conjunction with available resources like oxygen and water. These strides represent a substantial change toward more environmentally and energy‐friendly H2O2 manufacturing techniques that are in line with current environmental and energy goals. This work reviews recent advances in two‐electron water oxidation reaction (2e‐WOR) electrocatalysts, including design principles and reaction mechanisms, examines catalyst design alternatives and experimental characterization techniques, proposes standardized assessment criteria, investigates the impact of the interfacial milieu on the reaction, and discusses the value of in situ characterization and molecular dynamics simulations as a supplement to traditional experimental techniques and theoretical simulations, as shown in Figure 1. The review also emphasizes the importance of device design, interface, and surface engineering in improving the production of H2O2. Through adjustments to the chemical microenvironment, catalysts can demonstrate improved performance, opening the door for commercial applications that are scalable through tandem cell development.
