Abstract:Electro-peroxone (EP) is a novel advanced oxidation process and has drawn extensive attention recently. However, as the most important reactive species in EP process, the formation mechanism of hydroxyl radical (·OH) is not clear. In this work, oxalic acid (OA) was selected as the model pollutant, and an electrochemically modified graphite felt (MGF) was adopted as the cathode of EP process to explore the formation mechanism of ·OH. The results showed that ·OH was produced via three pathways, i.e., the conversion of O3, one-electron reduction of O3 (1e- O3 reduction) and the electro-driven peroxone (EDP) reaction. The contribution of these three pathways to ·OH formation was closely related to operating parameters. In the pH range of 5 to 9, the EDP dominated the ·OH formation under low current density or high O3 dosage, and meanwhile the degradation rate and mineralization rate of OA reached more than 80%. On the contrary, the 1e- O3 reduction dominated the ·OH formation under high current density or low O3 dosage, while the degradation efficiency of OA was relatively weak. Extremely acidic (pH≤3) or alkaline conditions (pH≥11) are adverse to the degradation of OA, which is caused by the difficult generation or severe quenching of ·OH. Besides, the cathodic behaviors of the EP process showed an appropriate reduction of current density and increase of pH value and O3 dosage could inhibit the occurrence of undesired reactions (e.g., H2O2 reduction and H2O reduction), and promote the competitiveness of EDP reaction. The new insights on the mechanism of ·OH formation indicated that maximum EDP reaction was the crucial for the removal of ozone-resistant compounds.
