Abstract:A high purity a-layered sodium disilicate (alpha-Na2Si2O5) has been synthesized by employing a mixture of 84% alpha-Na2Si2O5 and 16% delta-Na2Si2O5 as seed, and characterized by XRD, Si-29 MAS NMR, FT-IR, SEM and TG. The experimental data showed that a-layered sodium disilicate may been synthesized by adding 15% seed at 780 degrees C for 120 minutes. The lubrication of the synthesized sample was investigated. Adding alpha-Na2Si2O5 in liquid paraffin, the P-B value increased by 19.9%. The results indicated that oleic acid may pillar alpha-layered sodium disilicate. The reaction may increase the separation of layers. An increasing layer distance will be propitious for the glide of silicon layers and improve lubrication ability.

Abstract:Two layered sodium silicate products were prepared using a new ion exchange method called the freezing titration ion exchange. The tribological properties of the ion exchange products as additives in mineral oil were evaluated using a four-ball tester. The products exhibited excellent friction behavior when used as additives in mineral oil. When 1wt% was added, the tribological properties of the oils improved: the maximum non-seizure loads increased by over 27% and the wear scar diameter and friction coefficient decreased by over 50% and 25%, respectively. The friction and wear behaviors of the silicates were better than those of the typical lubricant additives.

Abstract:An oil-soluble cadmium dipropyldithiophosphate additive was synthesized. A four-ball wear tester was used to evaluate the tribological performance of the additive in a mineral oil and lubricant grease under different loads and compared with some commercial additives. The results show that it exhibits excellent antiwear and load-carrying capacities, better than commercial additives. In comparison Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) were used to investigate the topography, and chemical composition of the rubbing surface. Smooth and light topography of the wear scar confirms that the additive showed good antiwear characteristics. Energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer analyses reveled that tribochemical mixed protective films consists of atomic cadmium, sulphides, sulphates and phosphates were formed on the rubbing surface, which contribute to improve the tribological properties of lubricant and grease. Particularly, the soft cadmium film formed plays an important role in improving antiwear properties of oils. Finally, tribological performance and antiwear mechanism of the additive were discussed, and formation scheme for atomic cadmium was proposed. Copyright © 2004 SAE International.

Abstract:Traditional free radical polymerization has poor controllability, and traditional petroleum-based lubricant additives have adverse effects on the environment. Poly (lauryl methacrylate (LMA)-soybean oil (SBO)) (P(LMA-SBO) was synthesized using Salen-Cu(II) complex as a catalyst and azodiisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator by the Schlenk techniques. The structure of P(LMA-SBO) was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) followed by evaluating the solidification point depression performance by the Chinese standard method GB/T 510-2018, and the wax crystal morphology was studied by optical microscopy. The results show the catalytic activity could be 22.88 × 10 4 g·mol −1 ·h −1 and the number average molecular weight ( M n ) of the copolymer is 8.71 × 10 4 with a low dispersity ( Ɖ ) of 1.37 under the optimal conditions, which indicates good controllability of the polymerization. Adding 1.0%( w ) P(LMA-SBO) to the lubricating oil fraction (350–500 °C) could reduce the solidification point by 15 °C. Therefore, the Salen-Cu (II) catalyst was successfully applied to the controlled polymerization of LMA and SBO. The vegetable oil-based solidification point depressant of P(LMA-SBO) could be used as a potential alternative to replace the traditional solidification point depressant in the future.

Abstract:Quantitative method to determine trace additive triphenyl phosphate in hydraulic oil by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) was studied. Use multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) technology to record chromatographic peak flowed from high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). When concentration range of triphenyl phosphate is in 1 similar to 7 mg/L, the chromatographic peak area and concentration are of good linear relation. Experiment conditions of the method were also discribed.

Finally, formation scheme of atomic cadmium and action mechanism of the additive were proposed.

Smooth and light topography of worn scar further confirms that the additive showed good antiwear capacities, the results of Auger electron spectrometer and energy dispersive X-ray analysis indicate that tribochemically protective films consists of cadmium compouds, sulfides, sulphates and phosphates were formed on the rubbing surface, which contribute to improving the tribological properties of lubricants. Particularly, the results from depth profile indicate that a large amounts of cadmium are rich in outer layer of surface, which play an important role in improving antiwear properties of oils. Finally, the antiwear mechanism of the additive were proposed.

Abstract:Anti-wear (AW) additives and friction modifiers (FMs) and their interactions in lubricants are critical to tribological performance. This research investigates the compatibility and synergism of three oil-soluble alkylamine-phosphate ionic liquids with friction modifiers, organomolybdenum compounds. Three proton-based ionic liquids (PILs) were synthesized using a simple, low-cost, and unadulterated procedure as well as the chain lengths of the PILs affected the effectiveness of friction reduction and anti-wear. For example, the effect of a short-chain PIL alone as an additive on friction and wear behavior was not significant, whereas a long-chain PIL was more effective. In addition, PILs appeared to be able to coexist with organic molybdenum compounds and worked synergistically with dialkyl dithiophosphate oxygen molybdenum (MoDDP) to produce a sustained low coefficient of boundary friction (the coefficient of friction approaching 0.042). We proposed a three-stage tribochemical process to explain this interaction of PILs + MoDDP with contact surfaces to form physically adsorbed friction-reducing films and chemically reactive wear-protective films. This study reveals the compatibility and synergistic effects of two common lubricant components, which can be used to guide lubricant development in the future.

Abstract:The antiwear, friction reducing, antioxidation and corrosive properties of additives and their formulation were evaluated by four ball test, rotary bomb oxidation test, hot oil oxidation test and copper corrosion test. The results show that ME exhibits better synergistic antiwear and friction reducing properties with T202 and T203, respectively and has good synergistic antioxidation properties with DODPA. During oxidative degradation, lubricants containing ME possess good durability of antiwear and friction reducing capabilities, and have not produced corrosive tendency towards copper, compared with MoDDP and MoDTC in copper corrosion test. Consequently, sulfur-and phosphorus-f ree organic molybdenum compounds can provide novel technical route to reduce contents of sulfur and phosphorus in engine oils, and improve effectively lubrication of oils.

Abstract:Four oil-soluble ionic liquids (ILs) with different structures were synthesised: N-88816-Doss (N/S), P-88816-Doss (P/S), N-88816 phosphate (N/P) and P-88816 phosphate (P/P). The effects of the four ILs synthesised with conventional lubricating additives isobutylene sulfide (T321), zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) and tricresyl phosphate (T306) as PAO10 additives on the physicochemical properties of the prepared oil samples were systematically investigated at the same dosing rates. The antifriction and antiwear properties and extreme pressure performance of oil samples prepared by four ILs and three conventional additives were investigated by a four-ball friction and a wear testing machine. The results showed that P/S improved the thermal stability of PAO10. The addition of N/S significantly improved the tribological performance of PAO10 at room temperature and under heavy loading. The coefficient of friction was reduced by 90%, the wear spot diameter is decreased by 28%, the last non-seizure load P-B is doubled, and the resistance to sintering did not improve.

Abstract:The load-carrying capacity, friction reduction and antiwear properties of two benzotriazole derivatives containing the R2NC(=S)S- group, added in liquid paraffin under boundary lubrication conditions were evaluated using a Seta-Shell Four-ball lubrication machine and an optimal SRV tester. Their anticorrosive and antioxidative properties, and thermal stabilities were also examined. The results when compared with those of zinc butyloctyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) show that the two novel compounds possess an excellent load-carrying capacity similar to ZDDP and better antiwear and antioxidative properties than ZDDP. Besides that, they have good anticorrosive properties and high thermal stabilities. The rubbed surfaces were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy and electron probe microanalysis analytical tools. The extreme-pressure, antiwear and antioxidative mechanisms were discussed.

Abstract:In this study, three sterically-hindered quaternary ammonium phosphate ionic liquids (N11116-D.P, N111616-D.P, N88816-D.P) were synthesised, and the effect of the alkyl chain structure of oil soluble ILs on their lubricating and anti-corrosion abilities were investigated. In contrast to conventional ILs, oil soluble ILs exhibit prominent van der Waals interactions owing to the complex structure of the nonpolar alkyl chain, leading to special interfacial adsorption. It was found that when lower steric hindrance was present, the amount of ILs adsorbed increased, resulting in a compacted ad sorption layer with more mass, which facilitated the formation of more antiwear compounds in the tribochemical reaction and a hydrophobic layer that isolated the corrosive environment.

Abstract:RATIONALE: The efficiency of lubricants strongly depends on the content of functional additives. In order to assess the chemical and structural changes taking place in the lubricating oil and its additives during operation, it is essential to develop a method for simple and prompt analysis.METHODS: Two single additives as well as a fully formulated engine oil were analysed using an atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP-MALDI) source coupled to a linear trap quadrupole Orbitrap XL hybrid tandem mass spectrometer and compared with results obtained by means of electrospray ionization (ESI) including additional low-energy collision-induced dissociation (LE-CID). The identification of additives directly from technical surfaces was simulated by using steel substrates as AP-MALDI targets with varying roughness.RESULTS: After assessment and selection of the most suited AP-MALDI matrix it was found that pure additives such as calcium sulfonate and zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs) could well be identified with abundant signal intensity based on their elemental composition. Molecular identification was corroborated by LE-CID in ESI mode. Additionally, additives present in the fully formulated commercial oil such as ZDDPs and salicylates could be reliably identified based on the elemental composition of the deprotonated molecules by means of the Orbitrap unit on different substrates including steel surfaces with high roughness.CONCLUSIONS: AP-MALDI is an efficient technique for determination of lubricant additives directly from commercial oil blends. Identification of additive components was also achieved on steel surfaces with high roughness as applied in tribological systems and thus it is expected that it will be possible to assess additive degradation in real applications, enabling more effective and timely maintenance measures.

Abstract:This study examined the tribological properties of the IL 1 - octyl – 3 - methylimidazolium lactate (L-L108), which is used as an additive to SAE 10W-40 and PEG400, for steel–steel contacts. The ionic liquids 1 - octyl – 3 - methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (L-P108) and 1 - octyl – 3 - methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (L-B108) were used as reference lubricants because their molecular structures are similar to that of L-L108. Tribological experiments were performed on a ball-on-disk contact tribometer for 60 min (at room temperature, with a load of 5 N, sliding speed of 0.38 m/s, and relative humidity of 30%–55%). Sliding tests showed that the lubricating performance was improved when L-L108 was used as the SAE 10W-40 and PEG400 additive. After the sliding tests, the wear scar was analyzed using white light vertical scanning interferometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The three-dimensional images and cross-sectional line profiles showed the topography of the wear surface. When L-L108 was blended into 10W-40 and PEG400, the binding energy values of C, N, O, and Fe changed compared with a neat steel surface. The XPS analysis indicated that a tribochemical reaction occurred between the mixture and metal substrate during the friction process. This formed a chemical reaction film on the steel surface, and could have been the reason for the excellent tribological performance.

Abstract:Poly-alpha-olefin (PAO) was researched over acidic ionic liquid catalyzed the oligomerization of 1-decene. Ionic liquid used was 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium as a cation and aluminum chloride as an anion, which could effectively catalyze oligomerization and had a higher selectivity. The optimum process conditions for the synthesis of PAO were that the reaction temperature was 160°C, the reaction time was 3 h, the mole ratio between AlCl3 and [Bmim]Cl was 2.5:1, and the count of catalyst was 3 wt%. The components of product were analyzed with gas chromatograph, and the test results showed that the conversion of 1-decene was 74%. The product was the mixture of dimer, trimer, tetramer, and pentamer.

Abstract:Taking 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid (1,4-ND), 2,3-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid (2,3-ND) and tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide (N4444OH), tetrabutyl phosphonium hydroxide (P4444OH) as raw materials, water-based lubricant additives tetrabutyl ammonium 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylate (1,4-NDN4444), tetrabutyl phosphonium 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylate (1,4-NDP4444), tetrabutyl ammonium 2,3-naphthalene dicarboxylate (2,3-NDN4444), and tetrabutyl phosphonium 2,3-naphthalene dicarboxylate (2,3-NDP4444) were prepared in aqueous solution. The additives are not only simple to prepare, but also have good solubility in water. More importantly, they can significantly improve the friction reducing and anti-wear performances of water. On account of the mechanism analysis, it is estimated that the introduction of aromatic ring and more carboxyl groups to the additives play an important role for them to form stable lubrication protective films during the friction process and then to achieve excellent lubrication performance on steel/steel, copper/steel, and aluminum/steel friction pairs. Remarkably, the performances of 2,3-NDN4444 and 2,3-NDP4444 are superior to those of 1,4-NDN4444 and 1,4-NDP4444, which is ascribed to their stronger adsorption on the metal surfaces contributed by the two adsorption targets (two –COO− groups). For 1,4-NDN4444 and 1,4-NDP4444, there is only one –COO− group that can be simultaneously adsorbed on the metal surfaces from the perspective of space configuration. It weakens the adsorption and decreases the effectiveness of the lubrication protective films resulting in the reduced friction reducing and anti-wear properties of 1,4-NDN4444 and 1,4-NDP4444.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, Ahead of Print. Bio-based materials have attracted great attention from industry and academia in tribology because they are renewable, bio-degradable and easily accessible. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of bio-based materials used both as neat lubricants and additives on friction and wear performance. The evaluated lubricants include oleic acid, a mixture containing oleic acid and dodecyl amine in hexadecane and a neat ionic liquid composed of oleic acid and dodecyl amine. The influence of the additive concentration, ratio between acid and amine, and oscillation frequency under reciprocating contacts has been investigated. Surface analysis was conducted by optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. The results confirm that a small amount of oleic acid as an additive can provide limited friction reduction. Bio-based ionic liquid shows the lowest friction and wear coefficient in all testing conditions. A synergistic effect between oleic acid and dodecyl amine as an additive mixture has been observed when the two components are equimolar and the oscillating frequency is high. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis of the wear track indicates that the tribological process enhances the ionic character of the additive mixture, improving the lubrication performance.

Abstract:1-(4-ethylphenyl)-nonane-1,3-dione (0206) is an oil-soluble liquid molecule with rod-like structure. In this study, the chelate (0206-Fe) with octahedral structure was prepared by the reaction of ferric chloride and 1,3-diketone. The experimental results show that when using 0206 and a mixed solution containing 60% 0206-Fe and 40% 0206 (0206-Fe(60%)) as lubricants of the steel friction pairs, superlubricity can be achieved (0.007, 0.006). But their wear scar diameters (WSD) were very large (532 μm, 370 μm), which resulted in the pressure of only 44.3 and 61.8 MPa in the contact areas of the friction pairs. When 0206-Fe(60%) was mixed with PAO6, it was found that the friction coefficient (COF) decreased with increase of 0206-Fe(60%) in the solution. When the ratio of 0206-Fe(60%) to PAO6 was 8:2 (PAO6(20%)), it exhibited better comprehensive tribological properties (232.3 MPa). Subsequent studies have shown that reducing the viscosity of the base oil in the mixed solution helped to reduce COF and increased WSD. Considering the COF, contact pressure, and running-in time, it was found that the mixed lubricant (Oil3(20%)) prepared by the base oil with a viscosity of 19.7 mPa·s (Oil3) and 0206-Fe(60%) exhibited the best tribological properties (0.007, 161.4 MPa, 3,100 s).
