Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff base complexes, (C10H6N2)CNNCRFc, (C10H6N2)CNC6H4NCRFc and (C10H6N2)CNC6H4C6 H4NCRFc (R: H, CH3), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, UV, MS and 1H NMR). The single-crystal X-ray structure is presented for (C10H6N2)CNNCHFc (1). The cyclic voltammograms of complex 1 have shown reversible one-electron oxidation and two-step one-electron reduction.

Abstract:Fifteen new ferrocene derivatives containing 1H-1,2,4-triazole moiety were synthesized in various yields by the condensation of ferrocenecarboxaldehyde with 1-aryl-3-(1H-1,2,4-triazo-1-yl)-propen-1-ones in toluene. Their structures have been confirmed by H-1 NMR, IR, MS and elemental analysis. In addition, the crystal structure of 41 was determined. Abstract:Two new ferrocene derivatives N-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe1) and N-(2-hydroxy-5-chlorophenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe2) have been synthesized to study the effect on electronic, optical and charge transfer properties while changing the electron donating group with electron withdrawing group. The synthesized compounds were characterized by different spectroscopic (FTIR, UV–Vis, (^{mathrm {1}}hbox {H NMR}), (^{mathrm {13}}hbox {C NMR})) and spectrometric (EI) techniques. The geometries for ground and excited states were optimized by density functional theory (DFT/B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) and time-dependent DFT (TD-B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) levels, respectively. The absorption, fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra were estimated using TD-B3LYP and TD-wB97XD functionals and 6-31G** basis set for C, H, N, O and LANL2DZ for Fe atoms in dichloromethane.

Abstract:In this study, four ferrocenyl indenyl derivatives, C9H7–C≡C–Fc (1), C9H7–C≡C–Ph–Fc (2), C9H7–C≡C–Ph–C≡C–Fc (3), and C9H7–Ph–C≡C–Fc (4) (where C9H7=indenyl; Fc=C5H5FeC5H4; Ph=C6H5), have been synthesized by Sonogashira and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions and characterized by elemental analysis, and FT-IR, 1H, 13C-NMR, and MS spectroscopic methods, respectively. The molecular structures of 1, 2, and 4 were determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Two molecules appeared in the crystal structure of 4, and they interact through an intermolecular hydrogen bond. The electrochemical redox potential differences in 1–4 were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and calculations.

Abstract:New catalyst systems for diyne polycyclotrimerization were developed. E-1-[2-(2,5-Diethynylphenyl)vinyl]ferrocene (1), a ferrocene-containing diyne, was polymerized by ruthenium-and rhodium-based catalysts, affording hyperbranched polyphenylenes (hb-P1) with high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 1.4 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 100%). Effects of reaction conditions on the polymerization process were investigated, and structures of the resultant polymers were characterized by spectroscopic methods. The polymers were soluble, thermally stable, and redox active. Complexation with cobalt carbonyls further metalized the polymers. Both the polymers and their cobalt complexes showed high refractive indices (RI up to similar to 1.81) at 300-1700 nm, large Abbe numbers (nu(D)' up to similar to 681), and low optical dispersions (D' down to similar to 0.0015) in the telecommunication wavelength region. Pyrolyses of the polymers and their complexes furnished magnetic ceramics with high magnetizabilities (M-s up to similar to 83 emu/g).

Abstract:Three alkynylbiferrocenyl derivatives (1-3) were synthesized by cross coupling of 1',1'''-diiodobiferrocene with the corresponding alkynyl cuprous species and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR, and MS. The molecular structures of C(6)H(5)C CFc'Fc'C CC(6)H(5) (1), NO(2)-C(6)H(4)C CFc'Fc'C CC(6)H(4)-NO(2) (2), and I-Fc'Fc'C CC(6)H(4)Fc (3) have been identified by X-ray single crystal diffraction. The electrode reaction processes of 1-3 were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, and microelectrode chronoamperometry.

Abstract:Two ferrocene derivatives, namely, 1,2-(tetramethylene)-ferrocene and 1,2,1′,2′-bis(tetramethylene)-ferrocene, were synthesized in a four-step reaction sequence starting from ferrocene. Friedel–Crafts acylation of ferrocene using succinic anhydride gave mono- or bis(3-carboxypropinoyl)-ferrocene depending on the stoichiometry of succinic anhydride. The reduction of the keto groups to methylene followed by ring-closing using trifluoroacetic anhydride gave 1,2-(α-ketotetramethylene)-ferrocene or 1,2,1′,2′-bis(α-ketotetramethylene)-ferrocene. The diastereomeric mixture of the latter diketones was separated using column chromatography, characterized via single-crystal X-ray analysis, and assigned its stereochemistry. Reduction of the keto groups to methylene under Clemmensen conditions gave homoannular mono- or bis(tetramethylene)-ferrocene derivatives. The molecular structure of 1,2-(tetramethylene)-ferrocene revealed that the ipso carbon atoms of the cyclopentadienyl group are 0.023(3) Å farther away from Fe(II) compared to the remaining three carbon atoms. Both complexes exhibit lower half-wave oxidation potentials than ferrocene, possibly due to the electron-releasing effects of the tetramethylene bridges.

Abstract:Two new water-soluble monosubstituted functional ferrocene derivatives, p-ferrocenyl benzene sulfonic acid (BSAFc) and 4-ferrocenyl- 1,1 '-azobenzene-3,4 '-disulfonic acid (AYFc), bearing sulfonic groups and/or azo structure have been successfully synthesized in aqueous media according to the self-designed synthetic route. The preparation process is quite simple and convenient. H-1 NMR, FT-IR and element analysis data demonstrated the structures of the target products. U-V-Vis spectra and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements explained the electrophilic group that linked to BSAFc and AYFc was an influence on the orbital energy level of ferrocene. The CVs in different concentration and type of anion existing in the solution demonstrated that the electrochemical activities of BSAFc and AYFc firmly rely on the anion. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff-base complexes, [(C10H6N2)CN(C6H4)nNC(CH3)FcC(CH3)NC6H4) nN(C10H6N2)] (n = 0, 1, 2), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as the starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, vis). The cyclic voltammograms of the complexes have shown reversible one-electronic oxidation and reduction. The derivatives can quench the luminescence of Ru(bpy)3P2+ efficiently, with quenching rate constants of ca 109 mol−1 s−1 dm3 and the quenching process is a bimolecular energy transfer process.

Abstract:A series of ferrocenylacetylenylbiphenyl derivatives Fc-CCR [R=C6H4C6H5 (1), C6H4C6H4I (2), C6H4C6H4NO2 (3), C6H3(NO2)C6H4I (4)] and Fc-CCR′CCR″ [R″=Fc, R′=C6H4C6H4 (5), C6H3(NO2)C6H4 (6); R″=C6H5, R′=C6H4C6H4 (7)] were synthesized from FcCCH and biphenyl iodides by the Castro–Stephens and Sonogashira coupling reactions, in which compounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 are new. Seven new complexes [Fc-CCR][Co2(CO)6] [R=C6H4C6H5 (8), C6H4C6H4I (9), C6H4C6H4NO2 (10), C6H3(NO2)C6H4I (11)] and [Fc-CCR′CCR″] [Co2(CO)6]2 [R″=Fc, R′=C6H4C6H4 (12), C6H3(NO2)C6H4 (13); R″=C6H5, R′=C6H4C6H4 (14)] were obtained by the reaction of the ligands Fc-CCR and Fc-CCR′CCR″ with Co2(CO)8, respectively. Compounds 1–7 and their complexes 8–14 have been characterized by element analysis and spectroscopy, as well as by X-ray diffraction for 1, 4, 8, 9 and 11. The electrochemical data of compounds 1–12 have been obtained by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract:Four main-chain ferrocene-based polymers containing aromatic units, including poly( o -Cresolphthalein 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PCPFD), poly(cresol red 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PCRFD), poly(2,4-quinolinediol 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PQDFD), and poly(sudan orange G 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PSOFD), were successfully synthesized. The solution polycondensation reaction was employed for the synthesis of PCPFD and PCRFD while PQDFD and PSOFD were synthesized via an interfacial polycondensation reaction. The synthesized polymers were characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR, UV–VIS absorption and FTIR spectra and X-ray diffraction. The synthesized main-chain ferrocene-based polymers are generally amorphous. The effect of organic solvent, scan rate, electrolyte concentration and [Fe] concentration on the cyclic voltammetric behavior of the synthesized polymers were examined. The thermal properties were investigated employing thermogravimetric analysis. The results revealed the relative thermal stability of the polymers. The liquid crystalline properties were studied. The results indicated that the synthesized polymers exhibited nematic phases during the scan cycles of heating and cooling with high phase duration.

Abstract:A new kind of amphiphles, 1- (3- carboxy-1-oxopropyl)-1��-(1-oxoalkyl) ferrocene (FcAn, Cn+11H2n+12O1Fe, n=12, 14, 16, 18) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectrum, UV-Vis spectrum, 1H NMR methods. The surface pessure-area(��-A) curve of the FcAn monolayer on water subphase was measured and the molecular average cross-section area and collapse pressure was also obtained. Multilayer films was prepared by LB film techniques and the average depth was measured by SAXA (small angle X-Ray analysis) methods. The difference between FcAn's molecular aggregation in solution and in LB films was studied by UV-Vis spectrum.

Abstract:A series of novel 5-alkyl-2-ferrocenyl-6,7-dihydropyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrazin-4(5H)-one derivatives were synthesized by the reaction of ethyl 1-(2-bromoethyl)-3-ferrocenyl-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylate with non-aromatic primary amines in one-pot procedure and characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS and X-ray diffraction analysis. The effects of all the compounds on A549 cell growth were investigated. The results showed that all compounds had almost inhibitory effects on the growth of A549 cells.

Abstract:Two ferrocene-isocoumarin conjugated molecules, methyl 3-ferrocenyl-1-oxo-1H-isochromene-6-carboxylate () and 3,8-bisferrocenylpyrano[3,4-g]isochromene-1,6-dione (), have been synthesized through the acid-prompted regioselective oxidative cyclization from dimethyl 2-(ferrocenylethynyl)terephthalate () and dimethyl 2,5-bis(ferrocenylethynyl)terephthalate (), respectively. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, together with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, shows that the ferrocene-isocoumarin conjugated compounds display better coplanarity than the corresponding ferrocenylethynyl terephthalates. All the compounds exhibit characteristic MLCT, ICT and π-π* transitions in the UV-visible range in solution, and and show higher oscillator strength of the absorption than and , which are verified by time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) theoretical calculations. The electrochemical properties are studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), which are also in accord with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Three diiron ethanedithiolate complexes containing pendant ferrocene were prepared and structurally characterized. Reaction of the complex [{mu-SCH2CH(CH2OH)S}Fe-2(CO)(6)] (1) with ferrocenecarboxylic acid in the presence of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and 4-dimethylaminopyridine afforded complex [{mu-SCH2CH(CH(2)O(2)CFc)S}Fe-2(CO)(6)] (Fc = ferrocenyl) (2) in 73% yield. Further treatment of complex 2 with a monophosphine ligand tris(2-methoxyphenyl)phosphine or tris(2-furyl)phosphine in the presence of the decarbonylating agent Me3NO center dot 2H(2)O yielded the monophosphine-substituted complexes [{mu-SCH2CH(CH(2)O(2)CFc)S}Fe-2(CO)(5)P(2-C6H4OCH3)(3)] (3) and [{mu-SCH2CH(CH(2)O(2)CFc)S}Fe-2(CO)(5)P(2-C4H3O)(3)] (4) in 94% and 85% yields, respectively. The complexes 2-4 were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. In addition, electrochemical properties of the complexes 2-4 were studied by cyclic voltammetry.
