Abstract:Herein we reported a protocol for synthesis of oxy-substituted ferrocenes via cobalt-catalyzed direct C-H alkoxylation under mild conditions. Notably, alcohol serves as an both alkoxide reagent and a solvent. Various ferrocene amides including estrone-derived ferrocene amide are compatible with these reaction conditions. Moreover, control experiments suggested that this alkoxylation might undergo a Co(III)/Co(IV)/Co(II) catalytic cycle.

Abstract:The title organometallic compounds were synthesized by the condensation of formyl and acetyl ferrocene with cyanoacetyl, propionyl, butyryl,o-furoyl,o-thiofuroyl andm-pyridinecarboxy hydrazine in anhydrous ethanol under reflux. Abstract:Two ferrocene derivatives, namely, 1,2-(tetramethylene)-ferrocene and 1,2,1′,2′-bis(tetramethylene)-ferrocene, were synthesized in a four-step reaction sequence starting from ferrocene. Friedel–Crafts acylation of ferrocene using succinic anhydride gave mono- or bis(3-carboxypropinoyl)-ferrocene depending on the stoichiometry of succinic anhydride. The reduction of the keto groups to methylene followed by ring-closing using trifluoroacetic anhydride gave 1,2-(α-ketotetramethylene)-ferrocene or 1,2,1′,2′-bis(α-ketotetramethylene)-ferrocene. The diastereomeric mixture of the latter diketones was separated using column chromatography, characterized via single-crystal X-ray analysis, and assigned its stereochemistry. Reduction of the keto groups to methylene under Clemmensen conditions gave homoannular mono- or bis(tetramethylene)-ferrocene derivatives. The molecular structure of 1,2-(tetramethylene)-ferrocene revealed that the ipso carbon atoms of the cyclopentadienyl group are 0.023(3) Å farther away from Fe(II) compared to the remaining three carbon atoms. Both complexes exhibit lower half-wave oxidation potentials than ferrocene, possibly due to the electron-releasing effects of the tetramethylene bridges.

Abstract:Two new ferrocene derivatives N-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe1) and N-(2-hydroxy-5-chlorophenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe2) have been synthesized to study the effect on electronic, optical and charge transfer properties while changing the electron donating group with electron withdrawing group. The synthesized compounds were characterized by different spectroscopic (FTIR, UV–Vis, (^{mathrm {1}}hbox {H NMR}), (^{mathrm {13}}hbox {C NMR})) and spectrometric (EI) techniques. The geometries for ground and excited states were optimized by density functional theory (DFT/B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) and time-dependent DFT (TD-B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) levels, respectively. The absorption, fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra were estimated using TD-B3LYP and TD-wB97XD functionals and 6-31G** basis set for C, H, N, O and LANL2DZ for Fe atoms in dichloromethane.

Abstract:Two new water-soluble monosubstituted functional ferrocene derivatives, p-ferrocenyl benzene sulfonic acid (BSAFc) and 4-ferrocenyl- 1,1 '-azobenzene-3,4 '-disulfonic acid (AYFc), bearing sulfonic groups and/or azo structure have been successfully synthesized in aqueous media according to the self-designed synthetic route. The preparation process is quite simple and convenient. H-1 NMR, FT-IR and element analysis data demonstrated the structures of the target products. U-V-Vis spectra and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements explained the electrophilic group that linked to BSAFc and AYFc was an influence on the orbital energy level of ferrocene. The CVs in different concentration and type of anion existing in the solution demonstrated that the electrochemical activities of BSAFc and AYFc firmly rely on the anion. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Fifteen new ferrocene derivatives containing 1H-1,2,4-triazole moiety were synthesized in various yields by the condensation of ferrocenecarboxaldehyde with 1-aryl-3-(1H-1,2,4-triazo-1-yl)-propen-1-ones in toluene. Their structures have been confirmed by H-1 NMR, IR, MS and elemental analysis. In addition, the crystal structure of 41 was determined. Abstract:New ferrocenyl-containing diastereomeric secondary alcohols derived from L-proline of (ferrocenyl)(pyrrolidin-2-yl)methanol chemotype were synthesized. Their crystal and molecular structure was explored. Abstract:A series of conjugated, symmetrical, and ferrocene-containing main-chain monomers was prepared following a gentle coupling reaction. Ferrocene-containing oligomers with all-trans-configured vinylene bonds could be synthesized via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization. These oligomers had a larger Stokes shift (2400 to 2600 cm-1) and both exhibited stable and reversible electrochemistry. Meanwhile, the copolymerization of 1,1'-bis[1-methyl-2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethenyl]ferrocene with 2,7-divinyl-9,9-dioctylfluorene was achieved. The structurally regular copolymers proved their optical and electrochemical properties. The fluorescence intensity of the copolymer gradually enhanced with the increasing number of fluorene units. At the same time, it was also found that the color of the copolymers had a significant change from yellow-green to red.

Abstract:Ferrocene-containing polymers (FcPs) have attracted much research interest in the last decade, due to their unique properties and enormous applications. However, it is a great synthetic challenge to prepare FcPs before the advent of click chemistry. In this review, we summarized the recent research efforts on synthesizing FcPs through click reactions, which include click modification of preformed polymers and click polymerization of ferrocene (Fc) containing monomers. Due to the containing Fc moieties, the FcPs enjoy excellent redox activity, thermal stability, electrochemical property, and magnetism. Accordingly, they are promising to be used as electrochemical sensors, catalysts, magneto-ceramics, electrode modifiers, optical devices, etc.

Abstract:An efficient synthesis of ferrocene derivatives via Ru(II)-catalyzed direct selective C-H mono-alkynylation with easily accessible bromoalkyne compounds under weakly amide groups has been presented. This protocol provides an approach towards access to various ferrocene derivatives with easily transformed alkynes using carboxamides, giving alkynylated ferrocenes in up to 89% yield.

Abstract:A series of novel 5-alkyl-2-ferrocenyl-6,7-dihydropyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrazin-4(5H)-one derivatives were synthesized by the reaction of ethyl 1-(2-bromoethyl)-3-ferrocenyl-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylate with non-aromatic primary amines in one-pot procedure and characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS and X-ray diffraction analysis. The effects of all the compounds on A549 cell growth were investigated. The results showed that all compounds had almost inhibitory effects on the growth of A549 cells.

Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff base complexes, (C10H6N2)CNNCRFc, (C10H6N2)CNC6H4NCRFc and (C10H6N2)CNC6H4C6 H4NCRFc (R: H, CH3), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, UV, MS and 1H NMR). The single-crystal X-ray structure is presented for (C10H6N2)CNNCHFc (1). The cyclic voltammograms of complex 1 have shown reversible one-electron oxidation and two-step one-electron reduction.

Abstract:Part I. The directive effects of substituents in ferrocene have been investigated by means of Friedel-Crafts acetylation studies. It was demonstrated that the effect of an alkoxycarbonylamino group is comparable to that of an alkyl group in the acetylation of 1,1'-disubstituted ferrocenes. Contrary to expectations, acetylation of acetamide- and alkoxycarbonylaminoferrocenes gave chiefly the heteroannular isomers. Only small amounts of the 1, 2-isomers were formed; no 1,3-isomers were isolated. The iodine in iodoferrocene was replaced by hydrogen under the conditions of the Friedel-Crafts reaction. Bromo- and chloroferrocenes were readily acetylated; only heteroannularly substituted isomers were formed. Part II. The nature of the transmission of substituent effects from one cyclopentadienyl ring of ferrocene to a reaction center on the other ring was investigated by means of solvolyses studies on heteroannularly substituted methylferrocenylcarbinyl acetates. The evidence indicates that inductive or field effects predominate, and that resonance interactions play at most a minor role. Substituents possessing unshared pairs of electrons can apparently undergo nucleophilic participation with the central iron atom. This interaction very likely requires that the ring bearing the substituent be shifted or tilted in the transition state so that the substituent can be sufficiently close to the iron atom. A linear relationship has been shown to exist between substituent effects in all side-chain reactions of ferrocene reported to date and the reversible quarter-wave oxidation potentials of the appropriately substituted ferrocenes.

Abstract:A series of ferrocene derivatives with three, four, five, six and seven methyl group substituents has been prepared and characterized by multinuclear NMR, high resolution mass spectrometry and elemental analyses. Chemical oxidation of heptamethylferrocene with silver tetrafluoroborate produced paramagnetic heptamethylferricenium tetrafluorborate and the structure of one isomer of [C5Me4HFeC5Me3H2][BF4] was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies of the entire series of iron sandwich compounds from ferrocene to decamethylferrocene reveal a highly linear shift of the reversible half-wave potential (E1/2) for the FeIII/FeII couple such that each additional methyl group lowers E1/2 by an average of 54 mV. A new triple-decker complex has been synthesized by the addition of a ruthenium electrophile, [Cp*Ru(NCMe)3][PF6], (Cp* = C5Me5) to heptamethylferrocene, Me7FcH. While previous work established that reactions between [Cp*Ru(NCMe)3][PF6] and ferrocene derivatives with eight or more methyl group substituents readily form bimetallic complexes, reactions with ferrocene derivatives with six or fewer methyl groups brought about ring abstraction and afforded only monometallic products. Thus it may be concluded that there is a “tipping point” in the series of polymethylated ferrocenes such that the electron donating ability and/or steric influence of seven methyl groups is just sufficient to stabilize a ruthenium-iron tripledecker complex.

Abstract:The synthesis, oxidation reactions and transition metal complexes of a new ferrocenyl-bisphosphine, [Fe{C5H4P(C≡CH)2}2] (1), are described. The reaction of bis(dichlorophosphino)ferrocene with four equivalents of ethynylmagnesium bromide resulted in the formation of 1 in 76% yield. The reaction between 1, aqueous H2O2 or elemental sulphur produced bis(oxide) and bis(sulfide) derivatives, [Fe{C5H4P(E)(C≡CH)2}2] (2 E = O, 3 E = S). Reaction of 1 with [Ru(η 6-p-cymene)Cl2]2 yielded a diruthenium complex [Fe{C5H4P(C≡CH)2}2{RuCl2(η 6-p-cymene)}2] (4). Treatment of 1 with [M(COD)Cl2] (M = Pd, Pt) resulted in [Fe{C5H4P(C≡CH)2}2{MCl2}] (5 M = Pd, 6 M = Pt). Equimolar reactions between 1 and CuX produced binuclear complexes, [Fe{C5H4P(C≡CH)2}2{CuX}2] (7 X = Cl, 8 X = Br, 9 X = I).

Abstract:Ferrocene-containing hyperbranched poly(aroylarylene)s are prepared in satisfactory yields by one-pot copolycyclotrimerization of bis(aroylacetylene)s with a ferrocene-containing monoyne. The ferrocene content of the polymers can be varied by changing the monomer feed ratio, and copolymers with up to 41 mol% of ferrocene moiety can be readily prepared. All the polymers are thermally stable, losing little of their weights when heated to 340 °C.

Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff-base complexes, [(C10H6N2)CN(C6H4)nNC(CH3)FcC(CH3)NC6H4) nN(C10H6N2)] (n = 0, 1, 2), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as the starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, vis). The cyclic voltammograms of the complexes have shown reversible one-electronic oxidation and reduction. The derivatives can quench the luminescence of Ru(bpy)3P2+ efficiently, with quenching rate constants of ca 109 mol−1 s−1 dm3 and the quenching process is a bimolecular energy transfer process.

Abstract:Poly[bis(4-hydroxyoctoxyphenyl)sulfone 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate] (PHOSFD) was synthesized by solution polycondensation reaction of bis(4-hydroxyoctoxyphenyl)sulfone with 1,1′-ferrocenyl chloride. The synthesized polymer was characterized via the measurement of its 1 H NMR spectrum, UV–Vis spectrum and FTIR spectrum. X-ray diffraction pattern was measured to investigate the crystallinity of the synthesized polymer and it was found that the polymer is mostly amorphous. The molecular weight of the polymer was determined by gel permeation chromatography. In addition, the electrochemical, the thermal, and the liquid crystalline properties of the synthesized polymer were examined and compared with the properties of poly(diethyleneglycol 1,1′-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (PDEFD) that was synthesized in our earlier study. The electrochemical processes of PHOSFD in CH 2 Cl 2 were confirmed neither to be totally reversible nor completely irreversible. Generally, the electrochemical properties of PHOSFD and PDEFD were found to be similar to each other. PHOSFD was found to be thermally stable but its thermal stability is lower than that of PDEFD. Both of PHOSFD and PDEFD showed liquid crystalline properties and they possessed nematic phase textures with schlieren disclinations during heating and cooling.
