Abstract:New catalyst systems for diyne polycyclotrimerization were developed. E-1-[2-(2,5-Diethynylphenyl)vinyl]ferrocene (1), a ferrocene-containing diyne, was polymerized by ruthenium-and rhodium-based catalysts, affording hyperbranched polyphenylenes (hb-P1) with high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 1.4 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 100%). Effects of reaction conditions on the polymerization process were investigated, and structures of the resultant polymers were characterized by spectroscopic methods. The polymers were soluble, thermally stable, and redox active. Complexation with cobalt carbonyls further metalized the polymers. Both the polymers and their cobalt complexes showed high refractive indices (RI up to similar to 1.81) at 300-1700 nm, large Abbe numbers (nu(D)' up to similar to 681), and low optical dispersions (D' down to similar to 0.0015) in the telecommunication wavelength region. Pyrolyses of the polymers and their complexes furnished magnetic ceramics with high magnetizabilities (M-s up to similar to 83 emu/g).

Abstract:Ferrocene derivatives containing 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide linked on the 4-position of the naphthalimide ring have been synthesized. The electrochemical data and the free energy of charge separation (ΔGcs) showed that photo-induced electron transfer (PET) from the ferrocenyl unit to the naphthalimide moiety is thermodynamically feasible for these ferrocene derivatives. Their absorption spectra show that the electronic interaction between the ferrocenyl unit and the naphthalimide moiety are very different for these ferrocene derivatives. We attribute these differences due to different spacers used to link the ferrocenyl unit and the naphthalimide moiety. Measurements of the fluorescence spectrum and the fluorescence lifetime confirmed that the fluorescence of the naphthalimide is strongly quenched by the effective PET from the ferrocenyl units to the naphthalimide moieties. The PET path in 6-[4-(2-oxo-2-ferrocenyl-ethyl)-piperazin-1-yl]-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3-diones can be switched off by both the oxidation of the ferrocene unit and the protonation of the alkylated amine group. These kind of dyads can be employed as dual-mode chemical (protons)/electrochromic molecular switches.

Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff-base complexes, [(C10H6N2)CN(C6H4)nNC(CH3)FcC(CH3)NC6H4) nN(C10H6N2)] (n = 0, 1, 2), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as the starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, vis). The cyclic voltammograms of the complexes have shown reversible one-electronic oxidation and reduction. The derivatives can quench the luminescence of Ru(bpy)3P2+ efficiently, with quenching rate constants of ca 109 mol−1 s−1 dm3 and the quenching process is a bimolecular energy transfer process.

Abstract:Ferrocene-containing polymers (FcPs) have attracted much research interest in the last decade, due to their unique properties and enormous applications. However, it is a great synthetic challenge to prepare FcPs before the advent of click chemistry. In this review, we summarized the recent research efforts on synthesizing FcPs through click reactions, which include click modification of preformed polymers and click polymerization of ferrocene (Fc) containing monomers. Due to the containing Fc moieties, the FcPs enjoy excellent redox activity, thermal stability, electrochemical property, and magnetism. Accordingly, they are promising to be used as electrochemical sensors, catalysts, magneto-ceramics, electrode modifiers, optical devices, etc.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of two novel fluorene-containing ferrocene derivatives were reported. The two-photon absorption spectra and three-photon absorption cross-section values in the IR region for these two chromophores were studied. Together with their thermal stabilities, their linear absorption and emission properties were also investigated. The results show that the ferrocene derivatives have large two-photon and three-photon absorption in IR region as well as excellent thermal stabilities. The three-photon absorption based optical limiting properties of these two ferrocene derivatives were investigated by using sub-picosecond IR laser pulses.

Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff base complexes, (C10H6N2)CNNCRFc, (C10H6N2)CNC6H4NCRFc and (C10H6N2)CNC6H4C6 H4NCRFc (R: H, CH3), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, UV, MS and 1H NMR). The single-crystal X-ray structure is presented for (C10H6N2)CNNCHFc (1). The cyclic voltammograms of complex 1 have shown reversible one-electron oxidation and two-step one-electron reduction.

Abstract:Two new ferrocene derivatives N-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe1) and N-(2-hydroxy-5-chlorophenyl) ferrocylideneamine (Fe2) have been synthesized to study the effect on electronic, optical and charge transfer properties while changing the electron donating group with electron withdrawing group. The synthesized compounds were characterized by different spectroscopic (FTIR, UV–Vis, (^{mathrm {1}}hbox {H NMR}), (^{mathrm {13}}hbox {C NMR})) and spectrometric (EI) techniques. The geometries for ground and excited states were optimized by density functional theory (DFT/B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) and time-dependent DFT (TD-B3lyp/6-31G**, LANL2DZ) levels, respectively. The absorption, fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra were estimated using TD-B3LYP and TD-wB97XD functionals and 6-31G** basis set for C, H, N, O and LANL2DZ for Fe atoms in dichloromethane.

Abstract:A novel molecular switch, 7-(N,N-diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl ferrocene carboxylate (FCC), was synthesized and fully characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and HRMS. Taking advantage of the properties of ferrocene as an electron donor active unit and the coumarin as a fluorescent unit, the dyad FCC shows a fast and reversible redox-switchable fluorescence emission. In sharp contrast to most photoluminescent chromophores, FCC has a unique enhanced emission through aggregation. The change of electrochemical signals (CV and DPV) indicated that the ferrocene (F c ) unit of FCC could form inclusion complex with Me- β -cyclodextrin (CD). This inclusion complex could further weaken the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect remarkably. This advance paves the way to introduce AIE property into molecular devices applications.

Abstract:Aromatic azobenzene derivatives are outstanding organic photochromic compounds that possess unique photochemical properties. These compounds are widely used in research and development for various applications, especially in information storage, owing to their ability to isomerize between cis (Z) and trans (E) forms under the influence of light of different wavelengths. On account of these advantages, many efforts have been made to generalize the use of azobenzene derivatives. Furthermore, ferrocene‐based polymers and derivatives are promising candidates for functional materials due to their unique redox properties. By interlinking ferrocene with azobenzene, novel functional materials can be obtained that will integrate the excellent properties of both and will provide new applications in various fields including information storage, ion recognition, molecular devices, etc. This article provides an overview of the synthesis, properties and applications of novel ferrocene‐based polymers and derivatives containing azobenzene units. Abstract:Two ferrocene-isocoumarin conjugated molecules, methyl 3-ferrocenyl-1-oxo-1H-isochromene-6-carboxylate () and 3,8-bisferrocenylpyrano[3,4-g]isochromene-1,6-dione (), have been synthesized through the acid-prompted regioselective oxidative cyclization from dimethyl 2-(ferrocenylethynyl)terephthalate () and dimethyl 2,5-bis(ferrocenylethynyl)terephthalate (), respectively. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, together with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, shows that the ferrocene-isocoumarin conjugated compounds display better coplanarity than the corresponding ferrocenylethynyl terephthalates. All the compounds exhibit characteristic MLCT, ICT and π-π* transitions in the UV-visible range in solution, and and show higher oscillator strength of the absorption than and , which are verified by time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) theoretical calculations. The electrochemical properties are studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), which are also in accord with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The synthesis, structure, and size-dependent properties of ferrocene-embedded conjugated macrocycles are described. The one-pot, two-component "shotgun" synthesis greatly expands the structural diversity and functionality of nanohoops. These η5-type coordination metal-nanohoops exhibit intriguing properties, including reversible redox behavior and collisional quenching with fullerenes. Notably, the addition of oxidants enhances their fluorescence intensity, while fullerenes quench it. Detailed theoretical and experimental studies reveal that fine-tuning the nanohoop size significantly influences not only the molecular conformation but also its electronic structure and photophysical properties.

Abstract:The intramolecular fluorescence quenching in ferrocenoyl naphthalimide dyads has been studied. In the dyads, the singlet excited state of naphthalimide (NA) could be effectively quenched by the ferrocene center. When ferrocene (Fc) was oxidized chemically the intramolecular electron transfer from the oxidized ferrocene (Fc(+)) would be inhibited and the fluorescence of NA moiety would be recovered.

Abstract:Two new water-soluble monosubstituted functional ferrocene derivatives, p-ferrocenyl benzene sulfonic acid (BSAFc) and 4-ferrocenyl- 1,1 '-azobenzene-3,4 '-disulfonic acid (AYFc), bearing sulfonic groups and/or azo structure have been successfully synthesized in aqueous media according to the self-designed synthetic route. The preparation process is quite simple and convenient. H-1 NMR, FT-IR and element analysis data demonstrated the structures of the target products. U-V-Vis spectra and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements explained the electrophilic group that linked to BSAFc and AYFc was an influence on the orbital energy level of ferrocene. The CVs in different concentration and type of anion existing in the solution demonstrated that the electrochemical activities of BSAFc and AYFc firmly rely on the anion. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:This paper reports syntheses, crystal structures and electrochemical results for two ferrocene(Fc)-modified pyrimidine nucleosides that could potentially be used for investigating electron transfer in DNA. Fc was directly attached to the 5-position of deoxyuridine and deoxycytidine via the Stille coupling reaction. Fc-modified uridine was incorporated into DNA trinucleotides with standard solid-phase synthesis. The structures of corresponding detritylated compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Electrochemical investigations of all compounds by cyclic voltammetry revealed reversible redox processes.

Abstract:A new strategy has been developed to synthesize difurylperhydrocyclopentene derivatives. The compound displays reversible photochromism in solution and thin-film. The results show that furan is superior to thiophene in terms of strong fluorescence, higher photocyclization conversion and cyclization quantum yield, as well as better fatigue resistance. Owing to the molecule being derived absolutely from C, H, and O atoms, the compound exhibits no cytotoxicity, which enables it to potentially serve as a biodegradable and biorenewable material for in vivo applications.

Abstract:Two novel Fc-MPT conjugated compounds, 3-(ferrocenylethynyl)-10-methylphenothiazine (1) and 3,7-bis(ferrocenylethynyl)-10-methylphenothiazine (2), have been synthesized by Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that 2 displays better coplanarity between the Fc and MPT subunits. The crystal packing reveals that 1 stacks in the same direction between the neighboring molecules by the S center dot center dot center dot H-C (of the Fc moiety) hydrogen bonds, while 2 stacks in an inverse fashion between the adjacent molecules, not only by the S center dot center dot center dot H-C (of the MPT moiety) hydrogen bonds but also by pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. Both complexes show MLCT, ICT, and pi -> pi* transitions in the UV-visible range in solution, and 2 has a tremendous bathochromic shift and shows a higher oscillator strength of the absorption, which has been verified by TDDFT theoretical calculations. DFT calculations explain the electrochemistry of the two complexes and show that the larger conjugative effect in 2 leads to the smaller HOMO-LUMO gap (E-g). The differences between 1 and 2 indicate that the structural and conjugative effects have great influence on the electronic properties of the molecules.

Abstract:In the past decades, a lot of ferrocene (Fc) derivatives have been synthesized and used in many different applications. In addition, Fc-containing polymers have emerged, as an important class of the metal-containing polymers, with unique electrical, magnetic and optical properties and thus much considerable attention has been paid for the application of these polymer systems. These Fc-containing polymers have many different applications such as amperometric biosensors, immunosensors for proteins, DNA and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and carbon monoxide sensors and also they can be used for the fabrication of optical logic gates. This paper reviews the recent progress in the synthetic methodologies, functionalization and the applications of Fc-based polymers as well as some Fc derivatives.
Ferrocene-Containing Conjugated Oligomers Synthesized by Acyclic Diene Metathesis Polymerization

Abstract:A series of conjugated, symmetrical, and ferrocene-containing main-chain monomers was prepared following a gentle coupling reaction. Ferrocene-containing oligomers with all-trans-configured vinylene bonds could be synthesized via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization. These oligomers had a larger Stokes shift (2400 to 2600 cm-1) and both exhibited stable and reversible electrochemistry. Meanwhile, the copolymerization of 1,1'-bis[1-methyl-2-(4-vinylphenyl)ethenyl]ferrocene with 2,7-divinyl-9,9-dioctylfluorene was achieved. The structurally regular copolymers proved their optical and electrochemical properties. The fluorescence intensity of the copolymer gradually enhanced with the increasing number of fluorene units. At the same time, it was also found that the color of the copolymers had a significant change from yellow-green to red.
