Experimental study and design formula of the uplift performance of screw anchor foundations in silty clays

Abstract:Screw anchor foundations are widely used due to their fast construction speed and low construction difficulty. Despite their prevalent use, limited research on the ultimate uplift bearing capacity of screw anchor foundations in silty clay has been presented in recent years. In this paper, we conducted experiments on two types of screw anchor foundations, systematically comparing the impacts of various factors such as embedment depth, anchor rod diameter, anchor plate quantity, and tilt angle on the resulting ultimate uplift bearing capacity. The test results of meticulously recorded torque, failure modes, and crack distributions of screw anchors facilitated the derivation of theoretical calculation formulas for both shallow and deep ultimate uplift bearing capacities. Research has indicated that with increasing embedment depth and anchor plate quantity, the ultimate bearing capacity, torque, and torque coefficient of screw anchors increase. However, due to the disturbance and uneven distribution of the upper soil, this increase is nonlinear. Increasing the tilt angle reduces the ultimate bearing capacity, torque, and torque coefficient of screw anchors with a φ89 mm anchor rod, while it increases the torque coefficient of the φ140 mm anchor rod. By comparing the derived theoretical formulas with the experimental results, the validity of the theoretical formulas is confirmed.
