Abstract:In “the Era of the Chinese vs. the Western,” i.e., the era of upholding “Western orientation” and having an equal dialogue with the West and even surpassing the West, the Chinese discourse of modern political philosophy is at the most fundamental stage in the discourse system of Chinese humanities and social sciences. Chinese discourse of modern political philosophy entails three major discourse functions at the same time, namely, the “dialogical-defensive” function in the face of the West, the “interpretative-regulative” function in the face of the status quo, and the “interpretative-reflective function” in the face of history. Accordingly, its theoretical building is confronted with three major theoretical tasks, namely the “de-Westernization/de-liberalization,” the “Sinicization of the values/categories of modernity,” and the “modernization of the values/categories of Chineseness”. The “interpretative political philosophy” based on “public interpretations” is a form of knowledge that contributes to the construction of Chinese discourse of modern political philosophy. The reconstruction of intellectual history, the combination of political philosophy construction and socio-historical analysis, and the combination of historical politics and socio-political theoretical analysis are the three approaches for public interpretations that are compatible with the above-mentioned three major discourse functions and three theoretical tasks.
