Pursuing illocution is the basic rhetoric concept in Chinese traditional culture which is closely related to the traditional thinking and cultural mentality of Chinese. 

Abstract:The development of language is based on the usage of it.Without the usage of language,there is no development.The generation and development of such words as indicators of resemblance,metonymy words and onomatopoeias in Chinese and classifiers all have close relations with rhetoric.Grammar and pronunciation are the same as vocabulary.Thus,from the view of academic principles,the research on the history of Chinese should include the research on the history of Chinese rhetoric besides the history of Chinese phonetics,Chinese grammar and Chinese vocabulary.Only in this way can we finally establish an integral system of the history of the development of Chinese.There are at least three reasons: First,the research on the history of Chinese can not be without the problems of rhetoric.The generations of many linguistic phenomena need to be explained by the theories of rhetoric.Second,the research on the history of Chinese with the complement of rhetoric can help to get the correct explanation of the meanings of the words.Third,the research with rhetoric is beneficial to the textual research and collation.

Abstract:The rhetorical distinction between literal and metaphorical meanings and so semantic and discoursal opacity often associated with idioms is universal. But the format of idioms can stand out, and the means by which the expressions are formed, often drawing on the use of notable objects or events relevant to the native society concerned are often culture bound. These objects and events can often be drawn from relatively closed sets.

Advances in the History of Rhetoric

Abstract:This paper reviews and compares diverse rhetorical conceptualizations within Chinese rhetorical tradition during the fifth to third century B.C.E. Textual evidence shows that three schools of thoughts, namely Confucianism, Daoism, and Mohism, have contested with and challenged one another on the components and functions of rhetoric. Confucianism is more concerned with the moral character of the speaker while Mohism claims that rhetoric is used for mutual benefit and contains a rational element. Daoism, on the other hand, approaches rhetoric with a transcendental and dialectical outlook. This overview demonstrates the multi-faceted characteristics of ancient Chinese rhetoric.
Mr. Wang Li’s Study on Chinese Rhetorical Forms

Abstract:Mr. Wang Li covered a wide range and made a unique study of Chinese rhetorical forms. In his writings,he discussed as many as 22 kinds of rhetorical forms,some of which had never been touched upon by other rhetoricians. In his discussion about rhetoric forms in both modern Chinese and ancient Chinese,he associated them closely with Chinese grammar. He was quite different from other rhetoricians in his way of doing research. Especially when he dealt with modern Chinese rhetoric,he completely abandoned the method of "first studying a foreign system,and then fitting it with examples selected from the Chinese language ", which was often found in the books on rhetoric from the 1930s. He systematically studied A Dream of Red Mansions,from which he selected examples. As a result,he was rarely affected by Western rhetoric,and he got many original ideas with his conclusions in conformity with the reality of Chinese rhetoric. Mr. Wang Li made a holistic and profound analysis of antithesis in the Chinese language. As he had not only made a delicate description of it structurally,but also made a high generalization and analysis of it theoretically,his statement about antithesis in the Chinese language is very helpful for us to have a correct understanding of the characteristics of the Chinese language. Mr. Wang Li’s study on the issue concerning ellipsis in the Chinese language revealed the features of the close association of Chinese grammar with rhetoric,which is far more comprehensive than other general rhetorical works.

The Rhetorical Application of Ancient Chinese Poetry and Idiom in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Abstract:Facing the rapid development of Chinese comprehensive strength and overseas Confucius Institute, teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress needs further study of rhetoric. The spread of Chinese splendid culture needs rhetoric as a support. An excellent Chinese teacher needs more in-depth understanding of rhetoric. This article from two aspects of ancient poetry and idioms illustrates the importance of rhetoric in teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress. The main rhetorical devices are metaphor, personification, allusion, exaggeration, repeated and intertextuality, which explore the secrets and greatness of the Chinese rhetorical applications. At the same time, the paper has made some analyses and put forward some suggestions for the problems which may occur to the application of ancient poetry and idoms in the teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress.

Abstract:Was there rhetoric thought in ancient China? In the 1970s,a few Western scholars said: that there was no rhetoric tradition in the East or Middle East.Up to now,has this changed or not? Should we interpret Chinese classic rhetoric technically or philosophically? Should we interpret it by the categories of ancient Greece,from a single cultural background or from multi-cultural and global perspectives? This is a proposition which has puzzled both occidental and oriental scholars.In order to highlight the extensive and profound thought of rhetorical culture in ancient China,this paper conducts a dialogue with such ancient Chinese masters as Confucius,Kuei Ku Tzu(鬼谷子),Han Fei Tzu(韩非子),Shusun Bao(叔孙豹) and Zhufu Yan(主父偃).The author tries to discuss and answer the following questions in this paper: Was there rhetoric in ancient China? Is the statement that no rhetoric tradition outside the West is cultural bias or arrogance? What is Chinese classic rhetoric? What concept of rhetoric should we take in times of globalization? What are the new trends of international rhetoric studies from the visual angle of Chinese classical rhetoric? The author thinks that rhetoric is a kind of moral cultivation,a life pursuit,a way which can make human life eternal and a tool of argument and persuasion.It is not only the important means of doing a good job in administering state affairs and ensuring national security,but also a social order,and a form of human culture and civilization.Rhetoric is also an effective way leading to benevolence,supreme good and universal harmony in the world.Global rhetoric is becoming a new social order of all human beings and a new vision of the confrontation and amalgamation of academic thoughts.

Abstract:Applying asymmetry of contextual information between the speaker and the hearer under the four conditions for illocutionary acts and intentions in meaning, this paper aims to understand Madame Cui’s promise in the Romance of the Western Bower in order to find out what role the context plays in Madame Cui’s breaking her promise and how other people are able to negotiate with Madame Cui to make her fulfill her promise. The process of how Madame Cui makes the promise, breaks the promise, and fulfills the promise will be analyzed. The analysis can illustrate that context or contextual information plays a significant role in the making and understanding of a promise, and that meaning understanding is a process of construction by both the speaker and the hearer.

Abstract:The paper describes the context of Chinese rhetorical questions from the viewpoint of A/B-events theory, i.e., the different epistemic status of interactants. Chinese rhetorical questions coordinate the speaker's common ground and facilitate information exchange. Based on the different event types, Chinese rhetorical questions show special characteristics both in language forms and pragmatic functions. Whether a sentence carries any interrogative meaning depends on the rhetorical question's event types. If it is a B-event rhetorical question, maybe it carries such meaning. Other event types do not imply interrogative meanings. This study sets up scales for politeness, with the AB. event rhetorical questions being the most polite and the O-event rhetorical questions the most impolite. It emphasizes the importance of studying Chinese rhetorical questions in spontaneous spoken dialogue.

Abstract:Four-character-idioms is a typical structure in the flowing of judou phrases in Chinese sentences .It reflects the syntactic function brought from the meaning image and acoustic image both of which exist side by side and play a part together .Be-cause of their verse form, Chinese four-character-idioms can't be understood by modern grammar.This paper studied four character idiom’ s main function in sentences, which is denotation, description, comment and narrative.The author judges that four-charac-ter-idioms is a key by which to understand Chinese grammar .

Abstract:The study on the translation strategies of the classic quotations in the informative text from Chinese to English can help to create the discourse system that promotes the communication between China and other countries. Analyzing the features of the classic quotations in the informative text, this paper finds that these classic quotations are diversified and the translators of the quotations are not only faithful to the original text but also regardful of the receptor’s understanding. Therefore, the translators perfectly balance the relationship between foreignization and domestication, the two opposite translation strategies.
Non-prototypical Interrogatives in Chinese

Abstract:In Chinese,speech acts are possible to cause a sentence with interrogative subordinate object clause to change from a declarative or imperative sentence in syntax and semantics into an interrogative sentence,i.e.,a non-prototypical interrogative. Four types of non-prototypical interrogatives have been summed up in this paper based on different types of speech acts. All these non-prototypical interrogatives exclude interrogative markers in their main clauses,but could include the de-interrogative markers. They also have deferent degrees of interrogative mood. Some specific discourse markers in Chinese have the same functions in similar structures. The degrees of interrogative mood of these non-prototypical interrogatives are determined by six factors from the view of illocutionary force,adjacency and discourse markers.

Abstract:This article analyses the two main rhetorical techniques of “argumentation” (biàn) and “persuasion” (shuì) employed in politico-philosophical debates recorded in early Chinese argumentative texts of the Warring States period (ca. 5th–3rd cent. B.C.). Through the analysis of pertinent case studies drawn from the received literature, the contribution explores the formal, structural, and grammatical features of these techniques, with attention paid to the wide selection of rhetorical and literary devices they make use of. It also further provides an overview of the historical and socio-cultural background against which such techniques developed among so called “wandering persuaders” (yóushuì), who were travelling from court to court to offer their services as political advisors and diplomats to the local rulers of the time.

Abstract:The concept of force can be traced to Frege whereas the systematic study of the illocutionary force theory originated in Austin's initiation of the speech act theory. The formulation of this theory is believed to have filled up a blank in the philosophy of language. But Searle and Austin's other followers do not accept his viewpoint on the relationship of force with meaning. Instead of drawing a sharp contrast between the two concepts, however, it would be more advisable to regard illocutionary force as a constituent of communicative meaning in use, investigated as an important dimension of meaning complex, so as to further enrich the theoretical representation of meaning by virtue of exploring and analyzing the nature and components of illocutionary force.

Abstract:Hermeneutics is one of the main forms of the traditional Chinese learning.Gongyang Commentary starts an important tradition of Chinese hermeneutic which has great influence upon later ages.He Xiu made big contribution to the development of the tradition and pushed it to a new stage.Of He's hermeneutics the most significant and original is his theories of the three principles and nine elements(san ke jiu zi),i.e.unity of three traditions(da yi tong),three periods(zhang san shi) and distinguishing the inner and outer(yi nei wai).These theories demonstrate that He's hermeneutics is not one in sense of methodology,but a philosophical hermeneutics.

Abstract:Why do the Chinese relate rhetoric only to stylistic devices in writing? This question, which has puzzled scholars for decades, is finally answered. Modern Chinese rhetoric began to form in the late 1800s when Chinese students learned Western rhetoric from their Japanese professors, who translated it into “the study of beautiful prose,” subsequently severing it from oratory. In the early twentieth century, scholars returning from Japan and the US integrated Japanese theories and Anglo-American figures of speech into Chinese literary and literacy traditions despite nativists' protests and appropriated them into a canon of aesthetics only for writing studies.

Abstract:This article presents a philosophical framework for studies of ecolinguistics, combining the Eastern wisdom of ecological harmony and the Western human geographical concept of sense of place. To establish the basic criteria for ecolinguistic analysis, the article traces the three most influential Chinese schools of philosophy and extracts three of their shared disciplines: benevolence, frugality and intimacy with nature. To reveal the dynamic relationship between human beings and the places where they reside, the article revisits the concept of sense of place and extends it to cover an ecological dimension of people and place. Connecting ecological ethics derived from classical Chinese philosophy with systemic human-place dynamics, this proposed framework provides an ideological basis for ecolinguistic research, especially for discourse analysis. Following this ecosophy, the involved human beings and other elements of places included in a discourse can be revealed through the system of sense of place; and the ecological implications of linguistic features can be evaluated according to the three major principles. To complete the analysis, positive and negative orientations will be distinguished as well as a middle ground of ambivalent orientation. To conclude, this article aims to provide a well-grounded ideological reference for the deconstruction and subsequent assessment of linguistic resources, and thereby to establish a crucial strand of ecolinguistic scholarship.

Abstract:According to Newmark's text type translation theory, Obama's presidential election victory speech is a text with expressive function and vocative function, so it should be translated under the guidance of communicative translation strategy. The author believes that when translating political speeches from Chinese into Chinese, translators should be well-versed in the linguistic features and functions of the text, and understand the differences between the cultural backgrounds of Chinese and Western recipients, in order to produce fluent and acceptable translated texts tfor Chinese readers.. By analyzing two translated versions of Obama's inaugural speech, the article elucidates the instructive role of the theory of communicative translation theory in translating Western political speeches into Chinese.
