Abstract:The characteristic of fluid dynamics is one of the key factors, which affect coating quality. In the paper, the present work examines the fluid dynamics in the flow field of a two - wire - arc spray gun. The asymmetric character and turbulent behaviors are obtained with numerical computation and simulation based on Fluent. Moreover, velocity distribution is found that the mental droplets velocity declined gradually after acceleration near the exit of the jet nozzle, especially the droplets on the edge of the fluid lost their kinetic energy drastically and dissipate into ambient environment, which produces waste and pollutants. In order to increase the deposition ratio and coating quality, spray distance should be paid cautious attention.

Abstract:A new kind of two-stage atomizing high pressure spray nozzle for fire suppression is developed,which provides a way to solve the problem that the spray protecting diameter of spray is small.The sauter mean diameter(D_(SM)),flow velocity of the nozzle,flux and jet breakup length are computed.In the computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulation,the spray velocity field and water volume-fraction distribution of the two-stage atomizing nozzle are compared with those of the one-stage atomizing nozzle,respectively,then the structural parameters of the two-stage atomizing nozzle are optimized. The D_(SM),spray velocity and spray density distribution are measured to verify the simulation results.The research shows that the optimized two-stage atomizing nozzle has a 0.34 m protection diameter and its spray density distribution is uniform. The protection diameter of the two-stage atomizing spray head with multi-nozzle is more than 2 m,which is very practical in fire protection.

Abstract:Spray painting robots equipped with air spray guns have been widely used in the painting industry. In view of the low efficiency of single-nozzle air spray guns when spraying large targets, a new double-nozzle air spray gun structure was designed in this paper based on the Coanda effect of double jets. Firstly, a 3-D physical model of the double-nozzle air spray gun was built in Solidworks, in which unstructured grids were generated for the computational domain by ICEM. Secondly, the spray painting process was numerically modeled with the help of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-Fluent 16.0. The two-phase spray flow was calculated by coupling a discrete phase model (DPM) and the Taylor analogy breakup (TAB) method. The TAB model was applied to predict the secondary break-up. The DPM model was applied to predict the droplet trajectories. The geometry of an air spray gun has a significant influence on the spray flow field characteristics. The influence of the air spray gun geometry on the interference spray flow field characteristics and coating film thickness distribution were investigated by changing the values of the distance between the centers of the two paint holes (L) and the angle between the axes of the two paint holes (θ). Numerical results show that the smaller L and θ are, the stronger the interference effect between the two jets, while the more concentrated the paint is in the central region of the target surface, the easier it is for overspray to occur. With increasing L and θ, the interference effect gradually decreased and the extension distance of the coating film along the x-axis gradually increased. However, if L and θ are too large, the interference effect will become too weak and the shape of the coating film will become a concave, with more paint on both side regions and less paint in the central region, which will cause an uneven coating film. From the simulation results, it can be concluded that a more uniform coating film can be obtained when L = 30 mm and θ = 10°. The effective coating width of the double-nozzle air spray gun was increased by 85.7% compared with the single-nozzle air spray gun, which improved the spraying efficiency.

The effects of ultrasonic, such as cavitation effect, mechanical effect and heat effect, improve the atomization result of spraying materials. The application of Arc ultrasonic reduces the spraying graininess, accelerates the grain, reduces the porosity and improve the quality of spraying.

Abstract:The fluid dynamics in the jet field of a high velocity wire arc spray gun is one of the key factors to coating qualities. With the application of Fluent, the jet flow dynamics of a spray gun is simulated and computed, which concludes that the jet field could be characterized by three regions: the core region, the entrainment region, and the fully turbulent region. Influenced by the intersecting and reflecting of shock waves, the velocity distribution of the jet is non-homogeneous and asymmetric, and the axis velocity is severely fluctuated. Moreover, The flow in the wire plane is more divergent than that in the wires' vertical plane. Therefore, it's an important way to improve spray quality with appropriate spray distance and a special designed cap.

Abstract:A multi-functional micro-arc plasma spraying system was developed according to aerodynamics and plasma spray theory. The soft switch IGBT ( Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) invert technique, micro-computer control technique, convergent-divergent nozzle structure and axial powder feeding techniques have been adopted in the design of the micro-arc plasma spraying system. It is not only characterized by a small volume, a light weight, highly accurate control, high deposition efficiency and high reliability, but also has multi-functions in plasma spraying, welding and quenching. The experimental results showed that the system can produce a supersonic flame at a low power, spray Al2O3 particles at an average speed up to 430 m/s, and make nanostructured AT13 coatings with an average bonding strength of 42.7 MPa. Compared to conventional 9M plasma spraying with a higher power, the coatings with almost the same properties as those by conventional plasma spray can be deposited by multi-functional micro-arc plasma spraying with a lower power plasma arc due to an improved power supply design, spray gun structure and powder feeding method. Moreover, this system is suitable for working with thin parts and undertaking on site repairs, and as a result, the application of plasma spraying will be greatly extended.

Abstract:Flux pressure characteristic and mechanics characteristic of a big flux and flow area adjustable atomizer nozzle were analyzed.Screw flow channel structure and flow structure whose flow area can be adjusted automatically were designed.Test of flux pressure characteristic and atomization characteristic was done.Size distribution characteristic of atomization particles,ejection angle and flux pressure characteristic were inspected.The atomizer nozzle satisfied the demand of pressure and atomization in big flux changing range.Test results prove that the device methods is reasonable and valid.The theories analysis methods,test methods and design results can be used for product development immediately.

Abstract:Based on newly developed high efficiency supersonic spraying gun,a relatively three dimensional computational model is built to investigate multi-physic plasma flow in and out of the spraying gun.Numerical method considering argon plasma properties is applied.The plasma reaction including ionization and recombination were taken into consideration,so the number density of argon ion was gotten.According to the results,the highest temperature zone in the gun appeared near the cathode tip and didn't behave symmetry.Since the particle carrier channel is set inside of the spraying gun,the high temperature zone was diverged from the axis for about 1 mm.Simultaneously,the velocity distribution was also influenced with high velocity zone diverging from the axis and have strong gradient out of gun.From the distribution of ion number density,the solid particles introduced into the main flow were properly charged.
Study on the Atomization Characteristics of High-pressure Nozzle with an In-line Distributor

Abstract:A type of direct jet nozzle was modified to a nozzle, which was preceded by a swirl chamber with a cross-milled, in-line distributor. The spray status of modified nozzle can be explained by the instability theory. The atomizing parameters of a series of rotational flow nozzles for single-fluid water mist fire suppression were measured with three-dimensional phase Doppler particle anemometer (3D-PDPA). This paper presents the influence of diameters and spray pressure on the atomization of the tested nozzles. The experimental results show that spray cone angle, Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of water mist and axial velocity in the section of 1 m distance from the nozzle change a little, when the spray pressure is higher than 2 MPa. The best spray pressure for the measured nozzles is at 7-8 MPa. The related water mist's SMD is smaller than 100 μm, which belongs to the acceptable range of super water mist.

Abstract:Based on the developed ultrasonic frequency fast-convert pulse plasma spraying power supply, research on the pulse plasma arc characteristics has been done, especially the volt-ampere characteristics of plasma arc and arc shape. The results show that after the DC spraying the current is compounded with ultrasonic frequency pulse current, the arc voltage of spray gun will be significantly increased and the arc power can be improved accordingly. The diameter of the tail flame decreases obviously, the maximum shrinking rate of section of tail flame can be up to 47.6%, and thus the current density of tail flame increases greatly. The length of tail flame increases, which can extend the heating time in the arc of spray powder, making the powder be heated more fully, and it is helpful to improve the quality of the coating spray. When the pulse current's frequency is about 20 kHz and the duty cycle is about 50%, the best shrinking rate of section and the increment of tail flame's length can be obtained.

Abstract:Particle temperature and velocity is critical to the performance of coating sprayed by High Velocity Oxygen/Air Fuel spray system, which is mostly dependent on the flame temperature and velocity accelerated by convergent-divergent nozzle. Gas characteristics of inlet, throat and outlet of the nozzle are calculated. Characteristic diameter and inner shape of the nozzle is designed according to aerodynamics. Ther results show that the velocity of the flame reaches supersonic while oxygen and air is used as combustion-supporting gas respectively. At the same time, the pressure of the nozzle outlet is less than the ambient pressure, which is advantageous to powder feeding. Flame velocity can be continuously adjusted from 1400 to 2150m/s, while flame temperature is 1400~2600℃. The adjustable flame can meet the requirement of spraying coating for metal, alloy and ceramics.

Abstract:Laval structure and double-structure were brought in the design of the atomization particle nozzle in metal spray forming equipment.Al-Si alloys and Finemet alloy were chosen to test the effect of the new atomization particle nozzle with Laval structure.Compare with traditional straight pipe nozzle,Laval nozzle increases the gas velocity of the jet stream,also the G/M ratio,so that achieve a faster cooling rate during the metal droplet atomization process,therefore the level of the performance of the product has obviously improved.Specially,the amorphous phase existed in Finemet alloy spray formed with this Laval nozzle.

Abstract:The key of the fine spray fire extinguishing technology is the design of the nozzle parameters.In order to optimize the design parameters,a test research on the centrifugal nozzles with 12 different designed parameters was conducted.A LS-2000 laser particle meter was applied to measure the fine spray parameters.The paper analyzed the screw bar passageway shape,thread inclination,passageway numbers,screw bar length and other designed parameters of the nozzle affected to the spray site features.The research results showed that the screw length would have a less influence to the spray velocity and Sounar average particle and the thread inclination,passageway numbers and passageway shape would have a high influence to the spray features.The optimization of the design parameters for the fine spray nozzle should be from the thread inclination,passageway shape and passageway numbers.

Abstract:Experimental and numerical study of spray characteristic was conducted on swirl nozzle of torpedo.In the experimental research,the relationship between pressure difference of atomizer and mass flow rate was decided.In numerical research,a simulation analysis has been conducted for three-dimensional spray flow in swirling nozzle using the model of Lagrange discrete approach.The change rule of Sauter Mean Diameter and Droplet Spread Parameter are obtained along with pressure of nozzle in different flux.The numerical results of SMD are compared with the experimental data and there are good agreement each other.

Abstract:A novel atmospheric plasma spray method was proposed, using a newly development direct current non-transferred arc plasma torch which generated a long, stable and silent plasma jet in atmospheric environment without any other auxiliary equipment. The lengths of these plasma jets varied from 100 to 1000 mm in atmospheric environment. The fluid characteristics of plasma jets presented a laminar or quasi-laminar with a low-level noise less than 80 dB at the same time. Moreover, the lengths of the plasma jets increased with the increase of the output power at every constant gas flow rate and decreased with the increase of total gas flow rate at every constant output power, providing a super-long particle flight time in the atmospheric plasma spray process. The research history and current researches of these laminar plasma technologies are listed. The microstructure evolution, particle heating and motion were all presented by using six different types of powders. The effects of particle flowing characteristics to the formation of coatings were discussed. The results show a super long distance of particle heating and motion in the experiment when the system operates in a low output power and gas flow rate. Thus, low particle velocity and surface temperature are obtained. The variations of microstructures of the coatings and particle melting during the deposition can through different operation conditions, such as lengths of the plasma jet or spraying distances. Mass of vapor deposited coatings are obtained by using metallic or ceramic powders.

Abstract:Detonation spraying is a technique that uses the high-temperature, high-velocity detonation waves to deposit the molten metal particles onto the target surface. The effect of the detonation spraying is influenced by the structure of the gun significantly. A series of detonation spraying gun two-dimensional (2-D) numerical models with various spray gun structures (slope lengths from 5 to 45 mm with a step of 10 mm) were established in this work, to investigate the spray performance. During the process of gas detonation, the interaction between the detonation wave and obstacles results in the generation of reflected waves, which exerts an accelerating effect on flame. Simultaneously, collisions between the flame front and obstacles introduce energy losses. Based on the above factors, the following results can be obtained: when the slope length at the nozzle diameter change point is 5 mm, the maximum flow velocity is achieved at the spray gun outlet. When the slope length at the transition point of the spray gun is 25 mm, the maximum temperature is reached at the spray gun outlet. When the slope length at the transition point of the spray gun is 45 mm, the maximum pressure is reached at the spray gun outlet. This work can contribute to the design of the detonation gun.
